The Toxicity Of Parathion To Orconectes Rusticus And Viviparus Malleatus, Leslie Alan Goldsmith Jan 1978

The Toxicity Of Parathion To Orconectes Rusticus And Viviparus Malleatus, Leslie Alan Goldsmith

Open Access Dissertations

Parathion is an organophosphate pesticide used in great quantities in the United States and around the world. The mechanism of toxicity for parathion in mammals has been attributed to its enzymatic desulfuration to its oxygen analog paraoxon which subsequently fonns a covalent bond with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), inhibiting the activity of that enzyme and precipitating cholinergic toxicity. The mechanism by which parathion produces its toxic effects in insects has not been completely determined, but it is believed to be due to the same mechanism. The effect parathion exposure has on fresh water invertebrates has not been investigated to any great extent, …

The Relationship Between “Rapid Induction” And Placebo Analgesia, Hypnotic Susceptibility, And Chronic Pain Intensity, Lorraine Luke Snow Jan 1978

The Relationship Between “Rapid Induction” And Placebo Analgesia, Hypnotic Susceptibility, And Chronic Pain Intensity, Lorraine Luke Snow

Open Access Dissertations

The effects of Rapid (hypnotic) Induction Analgesia (RIA) and an oral placebo on clinical and experimental pain were compared in 30 volunteer male paraplegic veterans with chronic pain syndrome. Scores of hypnotic susceptibility and chronic pain experience were also correlated with the effects of RIA on clinical and experimental pain. Self-ratings of S’s clinical pain on a 0-100 scale were obtained before and after RIA and placebo treatments. Threshold and tolerance for ischemic muscle pain (experimental pain) was measured during baseline control, RIA, and placebo sessions. The general linear hypothesis was used to analyse the data. The results indicate …

Food Patterns Of Low-Income Portuguese, Suzanne P. Vieira

Open Access Master's Theses

The study investigated food habit change in a low-income Portuguese population, established factors which influence the nature and extent of change and evaluates the extent of change on dietary adequacy. Families were referred from the W.I.C. program (Women, Infants and Children) thus insuring a low income population. Food intake records were obtained for one pre-school child and the mother. A total of 50 families were contacted. In addition, a questionnaire was administered by interview. Questions were asked concerning child feeding practices and interaction with the non-Portuguese community

The results of the study revealed that traditional family meals are modified because …

Open Access Master's Theses

Purified collagen were made fluorescent by coupling with 2-methoxy-2,4-diphenyl-3(2H)-furanone, MDPF, and the fluorescent products were separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE. The profiles of Coomassie blue stained and MDPF-labeled collage. Tl bands on the gels were si."nilar except .for a slight increase in mobility with the MDPF coupled protein. · The relationship between the amount and the area under the peaks recorded from fluorometric scanning of purified al(I) ,a2 and al(III) was linear from 10-5g to l0- 8g. The standard curves for all three a chains were similar. Results from non-replicate determinations had an experimental error of …

The Effect Of Vehicle On Antiperspirant Efficacy, Melanie H. Smith Jan 1978

The Effect Of Vehicle On Antiperspirant Efficacy, Melanie H. Smith

Open Access Master's Theses

The effect of formulation factors on the efficacy of the antiperspirant agent, aluminum chlorhydrate, was studied. The formulation variables include the various carrier vehicles for the topically applied active ingredient. Quantification of antiperspirant efficiency was evaluated by a generally accepted gravimetric technique by application of a known amount of active ingredient to the axillae of human volunteers. Aluminum chlorhydrate was solubilized in a cream base, an aqueous lotion, and a hydroalcholic base, and was suspended in a solid stick. Aluminum chlorhydroxy allantoinate was incorporated into all vehicles for its therapeutic and cosmetic properties. All test antiperspirant products were selected on …

Robert Frost: A Twentieth Century Poet Of Man And Nature, Pauline Elaine Allen Jan 1978

Robert Frost: A Twentieth Century Poet Of Man And Nature, Pauline Elaine Allen

Open Access Master's Theses

Robert Frost is a twentieth century poet who deals realistically with his world through man and nature. Frost is still widely thought of as a nature poet, but this is a misconception. Although most of his poems are filled with nature images, his real subject is humanity. Frost admitted that he "had only three or four pure nature poems. The rest were human portraits with a nature setting."

Frost's poetry differs from that of nineteenth century poetry in response and tone--his subtlety and sly wit is often undetected except by the most observant, his material is presented honestly and without …

Tricyclic Antidepressants As Uptake Blockers, Girolamo A. Ortolano Jan 1978

Tricyclic Antidepressants As Uptake Blockers, Girolamo A. Ortolano

Open Access Master's Theses

The biogenic amine hypothesis of affective disorders ascribes a functional depletion of neurotransmitters within critical regions of the brain as either the cause or, at the very least, a concomitancy of the depressive syndrome. Much indirect evidence has accumulated to suggest that the therapeutic effect of tricyclic antidepressants (TCA's) is mediated by their ability to block the re-uptake of physiologically released neurotransmitter leaving more neurotransmitter available within the synapse to interact with the post-synaptic receptor, thereby correcting the posited functional depletion. The evidence upon which the proposed mechanism of TCA's therapeutic activity is based is largely indirect. Most of the …

An Experimental Model Of Hepatic Fibrosis Induced By The Administration Of Dibutyltin Dichloride, Jeannee Karen Yermakoff Jan 1978

An Experimental Model Of Hepatic Fibrosis Induced By The Administration Of Dibutyltin Dichloride, Jeannee Karen Yermakoff

Open Access Master's Theses

Dibutyltin dichloride (DBT}, one of a series of dialkyltin derivatives used industrially as polyvinylchloride stabilizers and urethane catalysts, was investigated for its ability to induce liver fibrosis in rats. Collagen, the predominant protein in fibrotic tissue, is synthesized in a series of sequential steps consisting of assembly of a proline-rich and lysine-rich polypeptide precursor of collagen, enzymatic hydroxylation of some of the prolyl and lysyl residues, and glycosylation of some of · the hydroxylysyl residues. Since prolyl residues are not hydroxylated before they are in peptide-bound form, the conversion of isotopically labeled proline to hydroxyproline by prolyl hydroxylase was taken …

A Direct Comparison Of Three Fear Assessment Techniques, Donald Paul Corriveau Jan 1978

A Direct Comparison Of Three Fear Assessment Techniques, Donald Paul Corriveau

Open Access Dissertations

A review of the literature in avoidance behavior in general and response prevention (RP) in particular revealed that three different assessment procedures have been used to measure fear. Although the relative advantages and disadvantages of each procedure have been addressed at the conceptual level, they have received little empirical comparison. The present study systematically examined the following assessment procedures: l) the avoidance extinction technique, 2) the approach procedure, and 3) the conditioned emotional response (CER) procedure. Two different dependent variables were recorded within each assessment procedure. The first purpose of the study was to compare the relative sensitivity of each …

Effectiveness Of Butyrophenones And Related Drugs In Narcotic Withdrawal In The Rat, Martin Dennis Hynes Iii Jan 1978

Effectiveness Of Butyrophenones And Related Drugs In Narcotic Withdrawal In The Rat, Martin Dennis Hynes Iii

Open Access Dissertations

Narcotic dependence was established by continuous intravenous infusion of gradually increasing doses of morphine. Several days at the terminal concentration of morphine (100 mg/kg/day) was allowed prior to withdrawal. Morphine withdrawal body shakes were reliably observed upon the termination of continuous morphine infusion. The administration of morphine, methadone or _fentanyl, potent narcotic drugs, reliably abolished the occurrence of withdrawal body shakes 8 hours after the termination of morphine infusion. The narcotic antagonist naloxone or pentazocine had no significant effect on the rate of occurrence of withdrawal body shakes; however, there was a slight trend towards an increase in the frequency …

The Effects Of Sevin (1-Naphthyl N-Methylcarbamate) On Morphology And Root Anatomy Of Glycine Max (L.) Merrill, Laurence M. Raine Jan 1978

The Effects Of Sevin (1-Naphthyl N-Methylcarbamate) On Morphology And Root Anatomy Of Glycine Max (L.) Merrill, Laurence M. Raine

Open Access Master's Theses

This study investigated the effects Sevin (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) had on the morphology and root anatomy of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.).

Morphological observations revealed that as the concentration of Sevin increased, the cotyledons, hypocotyl and epicotyl decreased in size. Absence of a pigment (presumably anthocyanin) normally present in the petioles and hypocotyl, was noticed at all applications of Sevin. Emergence of primary and trifoliate leaves was delayed as the concentration of Sevin increased. Increased Sevin concentrations produced thin, white roots with numerous laterals. With increased concentrations, purple pigment appeared on both taproots and lateral roots.

Growth rates …

They then viewed the Slide Show which consisted of low and high stress pictures, taken from a variety of sources. The subjects were then given a True/False Test related to factual content of the slides. They …

Facilitation Of Fear Reduction Following Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Rats, William A. Pacitti Jan 1978

Facilitation Of Fear Reduction Following Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Rats, William A. Pacitti

Open Access Dissertations

This study assessed the efficacy of positive electrical stimulation of the brain in counterconditioning fear in 100 albino laboratory rats. A parametric investigation was undertaken in which fear was conditioned through presentation of electric foot shock and then reduced through response prevention, in combination with different types of electrical stimulation of the brain. The basic measure of fear was the Conditioned Emotional Response (CER), as seen in the suppression of licking behavior.

Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB) has been used to effectively reduce active avoidance responding, another measure of conditioned fear, and its effects resemble closely those obtained when …
