R-Plasmid Transfer To And From Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated From Human Fecal Samples, T. L. Corliss, Paul S. Cohen, Victor J. Cabelli Jan 1981

R-Plasmid Transfer To And From Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated From Human Fecal Samples, T. L. Corliss, Paul S. Cohen, Victor J. Cabelli

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Strains of Escherichia coli recently isolated from human feces were examined for the frequency with which they accept an R factor (R1) from a derepressed fi+ strain of E. coli K-12 and transfer it to fecal and laboratory strains. Colicins produced by some of the isolates rapidly killed the other half of the mating pair; therefore, conjugation was conducted by a membrane filtration procedure whereby this effect was minimized. The majority of fecal E. coli isolates accepted the R factor at lower frequencies than K-12 F−, varying from 10−2 per donor cell to undetectable levels. The …

Promotion Of Distant-Water Fishing Industry In Taiwan, Dah-Wen Shieh Jan 1981

Promotion Of Distant-Water Fishing Industry In Taiwan, Dah-Wen Shieh

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The growth of distant-water fishing industry in Taiwan has been steady during the period from 1965-1973. However, since 1973, the slow expansion of distant-water fisheries has been reflected in both the production side and the decreasing catch per unit effort. The increasing operation costs and the shrinking fishing grounds are mainly attributable to the limitation of distant-water fishing industry. The small scale of fishing companies with small-sized vessels also resulted in the inefficient operation in this highly competitive business. For Taiwan, distant-water fishing is not only a means of meeting general protein requirements for its population but also an important …

Trace Metal Pollution In Narragansett Bay: A Case Study Of The Rhode Island Quahog Fishery, Scott W. Horsley Jan 1981

Trace Metal Pollution In Narragansett Bay: A Case Study Of The Rhode Island Quahog Fishery, Scott W. Horsley

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper was written with two objectives in mind: to provide information relevant to the protection of the quahog fishery and the protection of human health. Both are threatened as hundreds of millions of gallons of industrial effluents and sewage treatment plant discharges enter Narragansett Bay daily. The implications of trace metal pollution with respect to the quahog fishery have received little attention to date. The purpose of this paper is to assemble scientific, legal, and socioeconomic information in a fashion which will direct future research and management attempts in an effective manner.

Quantum Spin Chains, Jill C. Bonner, H. W. Blöte, Hans Beck, Gerhard Müller Jan 1981

Quantum Spin Chains, Jill C. Bonner, H. W. Blöte, Hans Beck, Gerhard Müller

Physics Faculty Publications

Serious scientific interest in one-dimensional (1-D) physics arose in the early 1960’s. This interest was stimulated by exact as well as accurate numerical solutions to a variety of quantum spin chain problems [1]. The potential relevance of such solutions to real experimental systems was first demonstrated by Griffiths [2] in conjunction with workers at the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratorium, Leiden. Theory and experiment were shown to be in excellent agreement for a naturally quasi-1-D Heisenberg spin 1/2 antiferromagnet, copper tetrammine sulphate [Cu(NH3)4SO4·H2O]. Further stimulus to the new field of quasi-1-D magnetism was provided …

Quantitative Method For Enumeration Of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli., Rebecca L. Calderon, Morris A. Levin Jan 1981

Quantitative Method For Enumeration Of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli., Rebecca L. Calderon, Morris A. Levin

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A rapid method was developed to quantify toxigenic Escherichia coli, using a membrane filter procedure. After filtration of samples, the membrane filter was first incubated on a medium selective for E. coli (24 h, 44° C) and then transferred to tryptic soy agar (3%; 6 h, 37° C). To assay for labile toxin-producing colonies, the filter was then transferred to a monolayer of Y-1 cells, the E. coli colonies were marked on the bottom of the petri dish, and the filter was removed after 15 min. The monolayer was observed for a positive rounding effect after a 15- to …

The Establishment Of Conditioned Reinforcement In Rats: Information Value Or Contiguity, Robert Stephen Harris Jan 1981

The Establishment Of Conditioned Reinforcement In Rats: Information Value Or Contiguity, Robert Stephen Harris

Open Access Master's Theses

An experiment was performed to determine the relative efficacy of "predictive information value" and of temporal contiguity with a primary reinforcer (SR) in establishing conditioned reinforcement value of previously neutral stimuli. Three different temporal patterns of pairs of neutral stimuli were presented both contiguously with non-response contingent primary reinforcement (experimental groups) and non-contiguously with primary reinforcement. Subsequently, the efficacy of these stimuli in reinforcing a new response (lever press) was assessed, both across pairs of stimuli and within each pair. Previous findings regarding the optimal temporal intervals between stimuli and between stimuli and reinforcement for maximum information value …

The Effect Of Adrenalectomy And Stress On Autoanalgesia In The Rat, Patricia A. Seymour Jan 1981

The Effect Of Adrenalectomy And Stress On Autoanalgesia In The Rat, Patricia A. Seymour

Open Access Master's Theses

A literature review showed that since the discovery of the endogenous opioid peptide, Beta-endorphin, and the fact that it is secreted along with ACTH as part of the stress response, much investigation has been directed toward determination of the role of this substance in autoanalgesia which is known to result from a variety of stressors. ACTH (and presumably, Beta-endorphin) are known to be secreted in very high amounts following stress in 24-hour adrenalectominzed. The present study, therefore, predicted that cold water swim (CWS) stress would induce analgesia, as measured by the tail-withdrawal analgesia test, in adrenalectomized and control rats, 24 …

The Effect Of Forced Warm Swim On Escape Learning In Rats, Katherine A. O'Neill Jan 1981

The Effect Of Forced Warm Swim On Escape Learning In Rats, Katherine A. O'Neill

Open Access Master's Theses

Recently, an animal model of depression, which appeared to be sensitive to clinically effective antidepressant treatments, was described by Porsolt et al (1978b). The model was derived from the observation that rats forced to swim in inescapable warm (25°C) water for fifteen minutes become immobile after some time. Immobility was characterized by animals floating in an upright position, with only their heads above water. When retested twenty-four hours later, rats showed significantly longer lengths of immobility than naive controls. The investigators labeled this response "behavioral despair". In the present study, two experiments were performed to further investigate "behavioral despair". In …

Determination Of Animal Fat In Margarine By High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Of The Sterols, Ali Alaidaros Jan 1981

Determination Of Animal Fat In Margarine By High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Of The Sterols, Ali Alaidaros

Open Access Master's Theses

The utility of high pressure liquid chromatography as a routine method to detect animal fats in vegetable margarines on the basis of sterol content was investigated. Cholesterol, which makes up almost 100% of the total sterol in animal fats, constitutes only 0-4% of the total sterols in vegetable oils.

The major phytosterols in vegetable oils currently used for margarine production are B-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol. Brassicasterol is less conunon but in rapeseed oil it is present in high proportion. The minor phytosterols are: ~ 5 -avenasterol, ~ 7 -stiqmasterol, 7 ~ -avenasterol, 24-methyl cholest-7-enol and cholesterol.

Protein content on a dry cell mass basis, alphaamylase activity and reducing sugar content in the broth were determined in all the growth …

Woman, Utopia And Ideology: A Case Study In Sociology Of Knowledge, Margaret M. M. Vanderbroek Jan 1981

Woman, Utopia And Ideology: A Case Study In Sociology Of Knowledge, Margaret M. M. Vanderbroek

Open Access Master's Theses

This study utilizes the perspective of the sociology of knowledge to examine the interrelationships between the characterization of woman in the utopian genre and attitudes toward woman in those Western societies where this literary form flourished. The history of the genre from early Greece to the present century traces interconnections and dependencies of form and intent. In chronicling the sociology of utopia, this study describes and analyzes the process by which utopian literature may be seen as a reflexive critique of the society which produced it. Examples from selected literary works place characterizations of woman and role into social and …

Effects Of Different Mixing Schedules On Phytoplankton, Zooplankton And Nutrients In Marine Microcosms, Candace A. Oviatt Jan 1981

Effects Of Different Mixing Schedules On Phytoplankton, Zooplankton And Nutrients In Marine Microcosms, Candace A. Oviatt

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

An experiment was carried out with different mixing schedules in marine microcosms. Continuous mixing resulted in higher chlorophyll concentrations, lower nutrient concentrations and lower zooplankton biomass than no mixing. No mixing caused water-column stratifications of chlorophyll and nutrients, as well as of organisms such as flagellates and rotifers adapted to low-mixing regimes. The most dramatic result was the low biomass of zooplankton in the continuously mixed microcosms and the high biomass of zooplankton in the unmixed microcosm.
