Conditioned Reinforcement: Order Out Of Chaos, Robert Stephen Harris Jan 1985

Conditioned Reinforcement: Order Out Of Chaos, Robert Stephen Harris

Open Access Dissertations

The empirical research on conditioned reinforcement, after nearly half a century, has failed to yield a coherent and conclusive body of literature to justify its extensive use as a genuine phenomenon and a basic construct within the field of learning. The primary reason for this dilemma is a history of the use of inadequate controls and the use of paradigms which are subject to interpretations other than that of conditioned reinforcement. In order to determine conclusively, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the establishment of a conditioned reinforcement effect, intracranial stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus was used as the primary …

Effect Of Temperature And Packaging Material On Vitamin A And Riboflavin In Milk, Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Zawawi Jan 1985

Effect Of Temperature And Packaging Material On Vitamin A And Riboflavin In Milk, Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Zawawi

Open Access Master's Theses

The effect of different heating times and temperatures and packaging on vitamin A and riboflavin retention was studied in whole and skim milk. Refrigerated storage (40C) in the dark for 15 days resulted in losses of vitamin A ranging from 9-12% in pasteurized whole milk, and 14% in pasteurized skim milk fortified with vitamins A and D. Riboflavin losses did not exceed 8 % • Vitamin A was also more labile than riboflavin when stored at room temperature ( 230C) • ' Vitamin A was retained better in whole milk than in skim milk where there was no protection from …

The Role Of Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations In Land Use Planning: An Application For Carrying Capacity Analysis, Russell A. Deconti Jan 1985

The Role Of Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations In Land Use Planning: An Application For Carrying Capacity Analysis, Russell A. Deconti

Open Access Master's Theses

This paper attempts to define the role of current individual sewage disposal system (ISDS) programs as they relate to the overall land development process. Specifically, the focus is on residential development with emphasis given to the criteria used to determine site suitability. Two state programs, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, will be evaluated in this manner in order to provide some insight into the scope of this type of regulation and its potential impact on development. To demonstrate the effect of each program on residential land use, a case study of a Rhode Island subdivision proposal is included. This discussion …

Bupropion And Thiothixene Compared With Placebo And Thiothixene In The Treatment Of Depressed Schizophrenic Inpatients, Robert Louis Dufresne

Open Access Master's Theses

A combination of bupropion hydrochloride and thiothixene was compared with a combination of placebo and thiothixene in a double blind investigation in thirty-eight patients meeting the DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia and also for atypical depression. These patients had to demonstrate a Hamilton Depression Scale score of at least eighteen prior to study entry. Assessments for efficacy and safety were performed at baseline and at regular intervals throughout the study. Patients were given physical exams with complete clinical laboratory workups prior to and after the study active treatment phase to document the safety of the respective treatments. Of the nineteen subjects …

Population Characteristics And Sulfide Oxidizing Metabolism Of The Bivalve Solemya Velum, Chong Chen Jan 1985

Population Characteristics And Sulfide Oxidizing Metabolism Of The Bivalve Solemya Velum, Chong Chen

Open Access Master's Theses

The physiological and biochemical studies of some animals from sulfide-rich habitats, such as deep sea hydrothermal vents, sewage outfall areas, eelgrass beds and mangrove swamps, have shown that sulfide-oxidizing chemoautotrophic bacteria exist endosymbiotically with the animals and provide a major energy source to their host. One of the remaining questions is the degree to which the symbiont supplies the host's need for reduced carbon and energy metabolism.

Solemya velum, a common Atlantic clam from Nova Scotia to Florida, has chemoautotrophic symbionts in the gill tissue (Cavanaugh, 1983). The host animal has a reduced digestive system and lacks some digestive …

The Effect Of Device Characteristics On Nitroglycerin Release From A Transdermal Patch, Karen M. Guilmette Jan 1985

The Effect Of Device Characteristics On Nitroglycerin Release From A Transdermal Patch, Karen M. Guilmette

Open Access Master's Theses

The effects of device characteristics on the release of nitroglycerin from a silicone disc were evaluated. A series of silicone discs containing nitroglycerin was prepared at varying levels of drug concentration, surface area, and firmness. A modification of the U.S.P. Dissolution Method I was used to evaluate the effects of these parameters on the in-vitro release of nitroglycerin from the discs. Reverse-phase HPLC was used for the quantitative analysis. The in-vitro dissolution method appeared reliable and reproducible in that there was good correlation (r=0.920) of dissolution profiles in both commercial transdermal products and test systems. The experimental data indicate that …

A Critical Examination Of Four Selected Attempts To Establish Objective Ethical Norms Without Recourse To A Transcendent Source, Paul A. Sauer Jan 1985

A Critical Examination Of Four Selected Attempts To Establish Objective Ethical Norms Without Recourse To A Transcendent Source, Paul A. Sauer

Open Access Master's Theses

In this t he sis four secular approaches to ethics which purport to either establish or lay the theoretical foundation for establishing objective ethical norms come in for a critical examination: These are: 1) the naturalism of Richard Taylor, 2) the linguistic conventionalism of John R. Searle, 3) the existentialist choice of Jean-Paul Sartre, and 4) the openly "ontological" strategy of Henry Veatch. Each of the above theories seeks to establish, explicitly or implicitly, a normative ethical requirement to respect the rights, freedom, etc. of other human beings. Using a consistent individualistic egoism as a foil, it is argued that …

The Role Of The Orientation Response In The Cognitive Control Of Leveling And Sharpening, David J. Libon Jan 1985

The Role Of The Orientation Response In The Cognitive Control Of Leveling And Sharpening, David J. Libon

Open Access Dissertations

Heart rate orientation responses were taken while subjects were administered two tests of leveling and sharpening. The first leveling and sharpening test was neutral in content while the second was designed to be affectively arousing. Subjects were also administered the aggression scale from the Edwards Personal Preference Scale (EPPS) and classified into low and high aggression groups. It was predicted that the use of attention is a major cognitive distinction between levelers and sharpeners. Heart rate orientation responses were used as a measure of attention. It was predicted that sharpeners would exhibit greater orienting behavior than levelers and these attentional …

An Interactive Computer Model For Oil Spill Training, Kurt A. Hansen

Open Access Master's Theses

An interactive computer model which can be used for marine oil prediction research and as a training tool has been developed. It uses an existing model from the University of Rhode Island which permits tracking of surface as well as entrained subsurface oil. To this are added models of spill cleanup and containment as well as calculations of costs involved for each of the response techniques. The performance of a response is judged in terms of the environmental and aesthetic impact of oil on an area. The model is set up and run for two actual spills in Narragansett Bay …

Factors Influencing Food Habits In Antigua, W.I., Jill E. Armstrong

Open Access Dissertations

A cross-cultural food habit model constructed after review of available literature was used as a guide for investigating food habit determinants. A food habit survey was conducted in Antigua, W.I. in December, 1981 and January, 1982 to test the model. Data collected by questionnaire from 305 households included household food purchase and production, food consumption via 24-hour recall and food frequency, food-related beliefs and socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and household members. Results showed that the Antiguan diet is starch-based and that, despite crop production by about two-thirds of the households sampled, many diets appeared to be deficient in selected fruit …

Causal Inferences Among Perceived Work And Nonwork Stress And Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress: Empirical Tests Of Path-Analytic Models, Jocelyn J. Johnson Jan 1985

Causal Inferences Among Perceived Work And Nonwork Stress And Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress: Empirical Tests Of Path-Analytic Models, Jocelyn J. Johnson

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation was designed to integrate work and nonwork domains in the study of perceived stress, satisfaction, and psychological distress. Causal inferences among perceived work and nonwork stress and satisfaction, and psychological distress were determined by empirically testing two basic path-analytic models depicting causal relationships among those variables.

Data were obtained from a sample of 105 female clerical workers on five variables (work stress, nonwork stress, work satisfaction, nonwork satisfaction, and psychological distress) and support for the contention that work and nonwork domains are interdependent was found. Nonwork variables contributed more to perceived psychological distress than work factors.

Results …

The Phillipine Extended Jurisdiction: Its Cost And Benefits To Fishery Industry, Ricardo R. Federizon Sep 1984

The Phillipine Extended Jurisdiction: Its Cost And Benefits To Fishery Industry, Ricardo R. Federizon

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Philippines is one of the countries that has its significant relations to fisheries economically and culturally. The coastal waters of the Philippines support over a million fishermen whose only source of income is fishing that does not go far off-shore. Due to population pressure and increased demand for fish as a basic food supply and as a source of foreign revenue income, more and more fishermen fish at the waters that carry a limited resource. As a result, overfishing persists that has a social and economic implication. Conflicts arise among the fishermen. Management measures are not implemented successfully because …

Orvs On The Cape Cod National Seashore, Karen G. Chaffee

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

With the creation of a National Seashore, we incur the responsibility of maintaining and preserving it. Since the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, the use of off-road vehicles (ORV's) has increased dramatically. These vehicles damage the fragile ecosystems of the seashore. The National Park Service Cooperative Research Unit at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was commissioned to undertake a five year study of the many facets of off-road vehicle impact on beach and dune as well as salt marsh and tidal flats.
