Landslide Tsunami Case Studies Using A Boussinesq Model And A Fully Nonlinear Tsunami Generation Model, P. Watts, Stephan Grilli, J. T. Kirby, G. J. Fryer, D. R. Tappin
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
Case studies of landslide tsunamis require integration of marine geology data and interpretations into numerical simulations of tsunami attack. Many landslide tsunami generation and propagation models have been proposed in recent time, further motivated by the 1998 Papua New Guinea event. However, few of these models have proven capable of integrating the best available marine geology data and interpretations into successful case studies that reproduce all available tsunami observations and records. We show that nonlinear and dispersive tsunami propagation models may be necessary for many landslide tsunami case studies. GEOWAVE is a comprehensive tsunami simulation model formed in part by …
From Free/Slave Binaries To Black/White Dialectics: The Problem Of Race In Antebellum Discourse (1831-1861), Sally Gomaa
From Free/Slave Binaries To Black/White Dialectics: The Problem Of Race In Antebellum Discourse (1831-1861), Sally Gomaa
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation argues that the death of slavery in the nineteenth-century paralleled the birth of "race" as an operational term in matters of social policy, cultural production, and legal disputes. This claim requires investigating the dialectical relationship between Blackness and Whiteness as categories of being. Therefore, this project operates on two levels: fixing the boundaries between Blackness and Whiteness in the antebellum period in order to unfix them, and contesting the idea of boundaries or boundary-making as an ontological act. Specifically, this project looks at four dimensions of the discourse of race in antebellum America: law as a constitutive element …

Predation On The Early Life History Stages Of Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) By The Sand Shrimp (Crangon Septemspinosa), David Lenox Taylor
Open Access Dissertations
Winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) stock complexes have been heavily exploited in the recent past, consequently decreasing abundances to record low levels. Despite management efforts to reduce further stock losses due to fishing mortality, discrete sub-populations of flounder continue to decrease for reasons that are unknown. Predation on the early life history stages of flatfish is recognized as the most important factor regulating year-class formation and recruitment. Winter flounder eggs and juveniles possess few morphological qualities that benefit the species in predator defense. Subsequently, survival of the early life stages of winter flounder depends on the effectiveness of spatial and temporal …

Longitudinal Study Of The Acquisition Of Locomotion, Motor Activity, And Infant Development, Janette Baird
Open Access Dissertations
This study explored the relationship between the age of development of 5 locomotor behaviors, the level of infant activity for the locomotor behaviors, and the performance of the sample of infants on standardized indices of infant development (Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence, FTII; Bayley Scales of Infant Development, BSID-II). A total of 157 infants were assessed at 6, 9, and 12 months for their activity levels on the 5 locomotor behaviors of interest, and the age at which each locomotor behavior occurred was obtained through records maintained by each infants' caregiver. The results of the regression path analysis indicates that …
Spc For Quality And Risk: Monitoring Processes With Cross-Sectional And Serial Interdependence, And Higher Moments, Xia Pan
Open Access Dissertations
This study attempts to improve the statistical process control (SPC) methods for quality control and improvement and introduce SPC methods into risk control. With systematic viewpoints, the quality and risk control in business organizations is an issue of the control of cross-sectional and serial interdependent processes. Quality and risk are also determined by not only the first and second moments but also the higher moments of the probabilistic process. Several contributions were made in this study. A correct bias correction coefficient with unequal sample sizes for Shewhart chart was given. The concordance of Shewhart mean and variability pair charts was …
Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino
Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino
Open Access Dissertations
The overarching theme of this thesis work is the development of the stomach in summer flounder, which occurs during metamorphosis. During normal development, proliferation of the gastric epithelium increases in early metamorphosis when incipient gastric glands first appear, and declines at late metamorphosis when gastric glands are completely developed. Inhibiting thyroid hormone prevents the increase in proliferation and the differentiation of glands, while high levels of thyroid hormone accelerate gastric gland differentiation but also inhibit proliferation. The hormone is necessary to cause cell proliferation, but at high doses it appears to selectively stimulate differentiation, suggesting that the steady increase in …

International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy
International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy
Open Access Dissertations
An increasing awareness of anthropogenic sound in the ocean has generated international concern that it is affecting marine mammal behavior and could affect entire marine ecosystems as well. Presently there is a lack of a coherent policy framework for evaluating the environmental impacts of underwater noise pollution. No international treaties or laws specifically address the transmission of sound in waters under national jurisdiction or on the high seas. This dissertation examines the issue of underwater noise pollution in a global context and considers the extent to which the international legal and environmental community has addressed it. The sharp increase in …
Development Of An Acoustic Data Storage Tag For Long Range Fish Tracking In The Ocean, Michael J. Obara
Development Of An Acoustic Data Storage Tag For Long Range Fish Tracking In The Ocean, Michael J. Obara
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation describes the development of an acoustic data storage tag for long-range fish tracking in the ocean. The core of the tag is a custom integrated circuit fabricated in 0.5μm CMOS. Device geopositioning is achieved with an on-board hydrophone listening for signals from several moored acoustic sources. Environmental data in the form of temperature and pressure is periodically sampled. All acquired data is stored locally. The tag's sampling protocol is completely programmable via a PC interface. This interface also allows sensor calibration and retrieval of data at the end of the tag's mission. Sensors, batteries, nonvolatile RAM and a …
Type Ii Collagen Differentially Degraded Epitopes Can Be Used To Monitor In Vitro And In Vivo Cartilage Degradation, Brian Roland Felice
Type Ii Collagen Differentially Degraded Epitopes Can Be Used To Monitor In Vitro And In Vivo Cartilage Degradation, Brian Roland Felice
Open Access Dissertations
Articular cartilage is comprised of resident chondrocytes interspersed throughout a complicated network of molecules called the cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM). The major component of articular cartilage ECM is type II collagen, which supplies the matrix with its characteristic tensile strength. In some forms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis (OA), type II collagen is uncontrollably destroyed ultimately leading to joint dysfunction. Type II collagen, the major collagen type found in articular cartilage, may account for 95% of the total collagen content of articular cartilage. The molecules implicated in the destruction of the ECM are a family of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases …
Self-Organization, Hierarchy, And Task Structure In Workgroups: An Empirical Study Of Complexity Theory, Matthew G. Paldy
Self-Organization, Hierarchy, And Task Structure In Workgroups: An Empirical Study Of Complexity Theory, Matthew G. Paldy
Open Access Dissertations
Complexity theorists argue that an optimal organizational form results from the interactions of individual agents in the absence of an imposed management hierarchy (Anderson, 1999; Begun, 1994; Berreby, 1998; Coveney & Highfield, 1995; Guastello, 2002). There have been few empirical studies to support this claim. This research investigated the effects of self-organization and task interdependence types on group effectiveness and member satisfaction. Results show that groups allowed to self-organize had greater member satisfaction in sequential and reciprocal task structures, shorter task completion times in sequential task structures, and lower satisfaction in pooled task structures versus comparable groups with hierarchy imposed. …

We characterize the chemical composition of Asian continental outflow observed during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE‐P) mission during February–April 2001 in the western Pacific using data collected on the NASA DC‐8 aircraft. A significant anthropogenic impact was present in the free troposphere and as far east as 150°E longitude reflecting rapid uplift and transport of continental emissions. Five‐day backward trajectories were utilized to identify five principal Asian source regions of outflow: central, coastal, north‐northwest (NNW), southeast (SE), and west‐southwest (WSW). The maximum mixing ratios for several species, such as CO, C2Cl4, …

Neuronal Control Of Nematocyst Discharge In Hydra, A. A. Scappaticci Jr.
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation research seeks to understand how the neuronal circuitry of the battery cell complex in hydra functions in order to accomplish the basic biological necessity of food acquisition through its effector organelles, the nematocysts. A behavioral assay was used to discharge individual nematocysts from the tentacles of Hydra vulgaris. Cnidocils were mechanically deflected using a piezoelectrically driven glass probe. Standard immunohistochemical methods were used to localize the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor in hydras tissues. Desmonemes and stenoteles differentially responded to imposed forces on the cnidocil. Desmonemes discharged when the cnidocil was struck with a force of at least 3.7 × 10−3 …

Micropropagation Of Carnivorous Plants, Kenneth Stephen Uhnak
Open Access Dissertations
A simple, efficient system for seed surface disinfestation and in vitro germination was developed for the carnivorous pitcher plants Darlingtonia californica and Sarracenia leucophylla. Of the disinfectants tested, hydrogen peroxide or 10% Clorox® were most effective for disinfesting seeds of D. californica, while concentrated sulfuric acid worked best for S. leucophylla. Differences in the effectiveness of sterilants were associated by differences in seed coat morphology. Seeds of D. californica imbibed at 4-7°C in sterile deionized water with surfactant and gibberellin germinated earlier than seeds without exposure to gibberellin. Unimbibed seeds of S. leucophylla germinated …

Biological Signature Of Scotian Shelf Water Crossovers On Georges Bank During Spring 1997, Karen F. Wishner, Dian J. Gifford, Barbara K. Sullivan, James J. Bisagni, Dawn M. Outram, Donna E. Van Keuren
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Episodic crossovers of cold low salinity Scotian Shelf Water (SSW) onto the Northeast Peak of Georges Bank are a potentially important mechanism transporting plankton species, including the copepod Calanus finmarchicus and its prey and predators, onto the Bank each spring. We provide the first detailed investigation of horizontal and vertical zooplankton distributions in SSW crossovers compared to other onbank locations from three GLOBEC cruises during spring 1997. SSW crossovers are physically and biologically distinct from other Bank locations. In late spring, chlorophyll concentrations and in vivo fluorescence are elevated and light transmission is reduced in SSW, while during early spring, …

Assessing The Impact Of Habitat And Stock Enhancement For The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus), In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Kathleen Monan Castro
Open Access Dissertations
Habitat enhancement and stock enhancement methods were examined as to their effect on abundance of the lobster, Homarus americanus, in Dutch Harbor in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Six experimental artificial reefs for lobster were established in Dutch Harbor in February 1997. The reefs were constructed identically consisting of two portions made up of cobble and boulders. The area was monitored for 6 months before placement and five years after placement using a combination of visual surveys by SCUBA divers, trap sampling, a tag-recapture program and airlift sampling for young of the year. Two areas were used as comparison sites, a …
The Offering: Writing A Historical Screenplay, Alicia B. Lyon
The Offering: Writing A Historical Screenplay, Alicia B. Lyon
Open Access Dissertations
Historians pose questions regarding film's influence on the public's perception of historical eras and events. One concern is adapting information from written sources into visual discourse. However, they do not discuss how the screenplay holds an intermediary position between these two modes of representation. The Offering: Writing a Historical Screenplay, therefore, explores how a scriptwriter determines his or her use of sources to suit the visual medium of film. Characterization and plot elements which are extracted from sources are transformed according to the dramatic narrative screenplay's unique set of conventions and codes which have been formulated as a result of …
The Influence Of Cognitive Reserve On Neuropsychological Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Susan Anne Legendre
The Influence Of Cognitive Reserve On Neuropsychological Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Susan Anne Legendre
Open Access Dissertations
Neuropsychological functioning is negatively affected in many individuals who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, the degree and consistency of this impairment is variable. Research in the fields of Alzheimer's disease and HIV suggests that the impact of various assaults to the central nervous system may be mediated through some form of cognitive reserve. The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) is based on the hypothesis that an individual's genetic make-up or experiences acquired throughout life, such as educational and occupational attainment, provide a reserve which allows an individual to sustain greater cerebral injury before clinical presentation of dysfunction. The …
The Nutritional Ecology Of Songbirds: How Food Quality, Diet Preferences, And Food Limitation Influence Nutrient Storage And Use During Migration, Barbara Jean Pierce
The Nutritional Ecology Of Songbirds: How Food Quality, Diet Preferences, And Food Limitation Influence Nutrient Storage And Use During Migration, Barbara Jean Pierce
Open Access Dissertations
Birds during migration alternate between periods of fasting during active flight and then intense re-feeding at stopover sites as they prepare for their next flight. At stopover sites, birds must select foods that satisfy their elevated nutrient and energy requirements even though food quantity and quality at these sites is often unpredictable. The primary goals of my research were to (1) examine the effects of food quality, food quantity, and digestive physiology on the dynamics of nutrient reserves in a small migratory songbird, (2) determine how nutrient preferences and diet influence the composition of nutrient reserves in a small migratory …
Nonenzymatic Formation Of Advanced Glycation Endproducts By Glucosamine Autocondensation And Glucosamine With Proteins, Xinfeng Zhang
Nonenzymatic Formation Of Advanced Glycation Endproducts By Glucosamine Autocondensation And Glucosamine With Proteins, Xinfeng Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
Advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) are a complex and heterogeneous group of compounds formed mainly by the nonenzymatic reactions of reducing sugars with amino acids and proteins. AGE accumulate in plasma and tissues with aging, diabetes, and renal failure. Glucosamine (GlcN) nonenzymatically forms autocondensation glycation products under physiological conditions. Many studies have reported the effectiveness of oral doses of glucosamine alone or in combination with the galactosamine containing chondroitin in treating osteoarthritis. However, none of these studies have considered whether it is the glucosamine itself and/or one or more of its autocondensation products which exerts this effect. Carnosine has been regarded …
Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva
Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis questions whether the film Fight Club, as a postmodern text, reaches a rhetorical goal of critical subversion, and if so, how does it reach this goal? Using a method of postmodern critical theory, this thesis argues that Fight Club does reach a goal of critical subversion by parodically installing and subverting modern hegemonic assumptions and challenging hegemonic cultural practices.

Natural Attenuation Of Roadway Runoff In A Vegetated Channel: A Comparison Between A Winter And A Non-Winter Storm Event, Annalisa Gianfrancesco
Open Access Master's Theses
A winter and a non-winter storm were sampled to compare the natural attenuation of roadway runoff within a channel. Samples were taken at three sampling locations within the channel during a non-winter and winter storm. Analyzed constituents of the samples include: trace metals, nutrients, hardness, halide, suspended solids, organic compounds and physical parameters. Comparisons of inlet constituent loads for each storm showed a significant increase in constituents in the winter storm. Reduction efficiencies throughout the channel length were calculated and the winter storm was found to have had lower removal rates per length of the swale.
Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold
Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold
Open Access Master's Theses
As Americans seek identification through the media, Foucault's "bio-power" extends the power of patriarchy and consumerism through gender prescriptions. A study of modern sexuality discourses can show what those prescriptions are and how the current power-knowledge regimes are maintained by them. This paper focuses on the aspects of Foucault's theories on power that deal with gender and sexuality discourses, explicating the cable show Sex and the City to discuss its role in the perpetuation of the status quo of patriarchy and consumerism through gendered identities. The paper also identifies aspects of the show that reveal a progressive pattern of resistance …

Biosecurity itself is more than a buzzword; it is the vital work of strategy, efforts, and planning to protect human, animal, and environmental health against biological threats. The primary goal of biosecurity is to protect against the risk posed by disease and organisms; the primary tools of biosecurity are exclusion, eradication, and control, supported by expert system management, practical protocols, and the rapid and efficient securing and sharing of vital information. Biosecurity is therefore the sum of risk management practices in defense against biological threats. (NASDA 2001, p. 1
