Background: Ixodes scapularis, commonly known as the blacklegged or deer tick, is the main vector of Lyme disease in the United States. Recent progress in transcriptome research has uncovered hundreds of different proteins expressed in the salivary glands of hard ticks, the majority of which have no known function, and include many novel protein families. We recently identified transcripts coding for two putative cytosolic sulfotransferases in these ticks which recognized phenolic monoamines as their substrates. In this current study, we characterize the genetic expression of these two cytosolic sulfotransferases throughout the tick life cycle as well as the …

Purpose: Malignant cancer foci develop acidic extracellular environments. Mild acidic conditions trigger insertion and folding of the pH (low) insertion peptide (pHLIPTM) across a cellular membrane, enabling targeting of such lesions.
Procedures: We employed optical imaging to follow targeting by fluorescent pHLIP given i.v. in mice. For visualization, Cy5.5 and Alexa750 were covalently attached to the N terminus of pHLIP, which stays outside of a cell membrane after transmembrane insertion.
Results: We demonstrate that pHLIP targets: (a) tumors of different origins established by subcutaneous injection of cancer cells, (b) spontaneous prostate tumors in TRAMP mice and (c) metastatic …

Chemicals that activate nuclear factor‐E2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2) often increase multidrug‐resistance‐associated protein (Mrp) expression in liver. Hepatocyte‐specific deletion of Kelch‐like ECH‐associated protein 1 (Keap1) activates Nrf2. Use of hepatocyte‐specific Keap1 deletion represents a nonpharmacological method to determine whether constitutive Nrf2 activation upregulates liver transporter expression in vivo. The mRNA, protein expression, and localization of several biotransformation and transporters were determined in livers of wild‐type and hepatocyte‐specific Keap1‐null mice. Sulfotransferase 2a1/2, NADP(H):quinone oxidoreductase 1, cytochrome P450 2b10, 3a11, and glutamate–cysteine ligase catalytic subunit expression were increased in livers of Keap1‐null mice. Organic anion‐transporting polypeptide 1a1 expression was …
An Analysis Of The Capacity Of Coastal Management Practitioners To Develop Coastal Ecosystem‐Based Management Plans, Tiffany Catherine Smythe
An Analysis Of The Capacity Of Coastal Management Practitioners To Develop Coastal Ecosystem‐Based Management Plans, Tiffany Catherine Smythe
Open Access Dissertations
Ecosystem‐based management (EBM) is an integrated, collaborative resource management strategy that is widely touted as the preferred approach to coastal and environmental management. Yet coastal management decisions largely occur through a fragmented system of governance, whereby coastal management practitioners act somewhat autonomously to make land‐ and water‐use decisions that can have tremendous impacts on entire ecosystems. There are relatively few examples of coastal ecosystem‐based management in practice; one possible reason is that a truly EBM approach, considering both the social and ecological aspects of an ecosystem, places extreme demands on coastal management practitioners. To effectively develop coastal EBM plans, practitioners …

The Use Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids In Mental Illness, Jessica L. Gören, T. Tewksbury
Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications
Purpose: This article will summarize the current evidence on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on prevention and treatment of mental illness. Background: Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in many physiologic processes. Since they cannot be made de novo in the body, they are considered essential nutrients. As the Western diet evolved, dietary intake of fatty acids has shifted to increased omega-6 fatty acids and decreased omega-3 fatty acids intake. These changes have been correlated with numerous differences in prevalence and course of mental illnesses. Methods: A MEDLINE search from 1966 to December 2010 was completed to …

This paper forms part of a broader overview of biodiversity of marine life in the Gulf of Maine area (GoMA), facilitated by the GoMA Census of Marine Life program. It synthesizes current data on species diversity of zooplankton and pelagic nekton, including compilation of observed species and descriptions of seasonal, regional and cross-shelf diversity patterns. Zooplankton diversity in the GoMA is characterized by spatial differences in community composition among the neritic environment, the coastal shelf, and deep offshore waters. Copepod diversity increased with depth on the Scotian Shelf. On the coastal shelf of the western Gulf of Maine, the number …

New Age Fairy Tales: The Abject Female Hero In El Laberinto Del Fauno And La Rebelión De Los Conejos Mágicos, Patricia Lapolla Swier

In totalitarian regimes, the Other is marginalized, prosecuted, and often eliminated from the national spectrum. While Spain is just beginning to confront the violations of the post-Civil War era, the nations of the Latin American Southern Cone have continued to struggle with the trauma and memory related to the violence perpetrated by the dictatorship. Through a psychoanalytic reading based on Julia Kristeva's theories of the abject and Joseph Campbell's investigations of myth within the hero's journey, I show how the young female heroes of El laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) and La rebelión de los conejos mágicos (The Rabbits' Rebellion) …
The Rise And Fall Of Western Homohysteria, Eric Anderson
The Rise And Fall Of Western Homohysteria, Eric Anderson
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
In this essay, I draw upon my pro-feminist background to describe the formulation of the concept of homohysteria and explain its heuristic utility in conceptualizing historical shifts in heterosexual men's gendered regimes. I suggest that in times of high homohysteria, heterosexual men are compelled to align their identities and behaviors with orthodox (hypermasculine) notions of men's masculinity. This is in order to avoid homosexualization. Conversely, heterosexual men retain considerably more gendered freedom in times of low or no homohysteria. I describe this as a cultural process related to homophobia and define the term homohysteria as men's fear of being homosexualized, …
Feminist Debate In Taiwan's Buddhism: The Issue Of The Eight Garudhammas, Chiung Hwang Chen
Feminist Debate In Taiwan's Buddhism: The Issue Of The Eight Garudhammas, Chiung Hwang Chen
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
In 2001, during an academic conference on Humanistic Buddhism in Taipei, Venerable Shi Zhaohui, accompanied by a few Buddhist clergy and laypeople, tore apart a copy of the Eight Garudhammas (Eight Heavy Rules), regulations that govern the behavior of Buddhist nuns. Zhaohui's symbolic act created instant controversy as Taiwan's Buddhist community argued about the rules' authenticity and other issues within Buddhist monastic affairs. This paper examines the debate over the Eight Garudhammas and situates the debate within Taiwan's cultural terrain as well as the worldwide Buddhist feminist movement. I argue that while Zhaohui's call resulted in the abolishment of the …

A Riverbank Filtration Demonstration Project On The Kali River, Dandeli, Karnataka, India, Pamela Cady
Open Access Master's Theses
A small scale RBF system was installed in a village near the Kali River in the state of Karnataka to evaluate the performance of riverbank filtration (RBF) under the hydrogeological and climatological conditions of southern India. A series of hydraulic and tracer tests were carried out along with periodic biological and geochemical monitoring of various water sources in the study area.
Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes highlight the impact of evaporation and irrigation at nearby rice paddies on the RBF production well. Dissolved silica data used to determine the relative contributions of surface and groundwater indicate that this RBF system derives …
Variability In Biomass Decay Rates And Nutrient Loss In Bloom-Forming Macroalgal Species, Jessica Elizabeth Conover
Variability In Biomass Decay Rates And Nutrient Loss In Bloom-Forming Macroalgal Species, Jessica Elizabeth Conover
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis is comprised of one manuscript. A summary of the manuscript follows: Decaying macroalgae release nitrogen and other nutrients into the surrounding marine environment, providing nutrients for future generations of primary producers, as well as fueling a complex web of decomposer microorganisms. There are relatively few studies that examine macroalgal decomposition rates in areas impacted by macroalgal blooms, although fast-growing macroalgal bloom species typically decay more quickly than slow-growing perennial species. We studied whole tissue, organic content, and nutrient decay rates for five macroalgal species in Narragansett Bay, RI in the summer of 2010 using an intertidal litterbag design; …

Influence Of Industrial Activities On The Spatial Distribution Of Wildlife In Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, Samuel Ayebare
Open Access Master's Theses
Activities carried out by resource extraction industries in and adjacent to protected areas have increased the risk to biodiversity conservation in different parts of the world. Oil and natural gas developments in the Albertine rift, one of Africa’s biodiversity hotspots, have raised concerns about the potential impacts to wildlife populations and the associated land-cover change. The influence of oil and gas industrial activities on the spatial distribution of wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park was examined by conducting wildlife surveys along 2-km long transects that radiated away from well pads and access roads. The position of large mammal sightings were …

Open Access Master's Theses
The process of pharmaceutical formulation is constantly evolving as many new active compounds are being discovered in order to overcome the challenges associated with producing viable dosage forms to reach the target tissues by these compounds. Perhaps, the most important property for a drug to be effectively formulated into a dosage form is adequate miscibility and solubility which may be in an organic solvent vehicle but is mainly in water. Water solubility along with solubility in the body fluids is critical from the point of view of achieving the desired levels of the drug in the body for effective therapy …

Nanostructured Anti-Biofouling Surfaces: Physical Deposition Of Ps-B-Paa Langmuir-Blodgett Films, David Bello
Open Access Master's Theses
Biofouling, the accumulation and proliferation of microorganisms, plants, and fouling animals on surfaces in an aqueous environment, poses a significant challenge. For example, the effects of fouling of ship hauls include hydrodynamic drag, increase in fuel consumption by ships whose hulls have been fouled, and increase in frequency of dry-dock cleaning.
In the history of marine navigation, varieties of anti-biofouling control measures have been suggested but tributyltin self-polishing copolymer (TBT-SPC) paints have been the most effective and commercially viable option in curbing biofouling. However, leaching of tri-organotin biocides from TBT-SPC paints through self-polishing activity constitute pollution which led to the …

The effect of noise on marine life is one of the big unknowns of current marine science. Considerable evidence exists that the human contribution to ocean noise has increased during the past few decades: human noise has become the dominant component of marine noise in some regions, and noise is directly correlated with the increasing industrialization of the ocean. Sound is an important factor in the lives of many marine organisms, and theory and increasing observations suggest that human noise could be approaching levels at which negative effects on marine life may be occurring. Certain species already show symptoms of …

Seasonal adjustments to muscle size in migratory birds may result from preparatory physiological changes or responses to changed workloads. The mechanisms controlling these changes in size are poorly understood. We investigated some potential mediators of flight muscle size (myostatin and insulin-like growth factor, IGF1) in pectoralis muscles of wild wintering or migrating white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis), captive white-throated sparrows that were photoperiod manipulated to be in a `wintering' or `migratory' (Zugunruhe) state, and captive European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) that were either exercised for 2 weeks in a wind tunnel or untrained. Flight muscle size increased in …

Exposures To Multiple Environmental Chemicals (Lead, Methylmercury And Polychlorinated Biphenyls) Among Childbearing-Aged Women In The U.S., Marcella Remer Thompson
Open Access Dissertations
It is estimated that 5 to 20% of neurodevelopmental disabilities in children are caused by environmental toxic exposures. Lead, methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are known to have neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental consequences in animal models and human population studies. Bioaccumulation and exposures during gestation transfer from mother to fetus via the placenta and to an infant and young child through lactation. Little is known about multiple environmental chemical exposures, especially among childbearing-aged women.
This descriptive and exploratory study involved analysis of existing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a national probability sample. Lead, methylmercury and the …

Most drug molecules cannot freely diffuse across a cellular membrane because of the energetic barrier for transition across a hydrophobic lipid bilayer of a membrane is very high for polar molecules. Recently it was discovered that a moderately hydrophobic, water-soluble membrane peptide called pHLIP (pH (Low) Insertion Peptide) can insert into membranes and translocate molecules in a pH-dependent manner. This opens a unique opportunity to develop a novel concept in drug delivery, which is based on the use of a pH-sensitive single peptide molecular transporter. The main goal of this investigation is to elucidate mechanism of cargo translocation across a …

When Donald Sutherland burst onto the American film scene with his portrayal of Hawkeye in the unexpected Robert Altman hit M*A* S*H (1970), the popular press couldn't seem to agree on how best to characterize this new "un-Hollywood" star, fixing by turns on his Canadian background, his political activism, or his "funny peculiar" sense of humor (Dorothy Manners, "Sutherland - 'Actors Should Be Involved in Pertinent Causes,'" L.A. Examiner Sunday, 12 July 1970, n.p.; Douglas Marshall, "The Funniest Film Actor Canada Has Ever Produced," Maclean's, 1 September 1970, 42). Quantitative linkages between individual organism movements and the resulting population distributions are fundamental to understanding a wide range of ecological processes, including rates of reproduction, consumption, and mortality, as well as the spread of diseases and invasions. Typically, quantitative data are collected on either movement behaviors or population distributions, rarely both. This study combines empirical observations and model simulations to gain a mechanistic understanding and predictive ability of the linkages between both individual movement behaviors and population distributions of a single-celled planktonic herbivore. In the laboratory, microscopic 3D movements and macroscopic population distributions were simultaneously quantified in a 1L tank, …
