Connecting Assessment And Instruction To Help Students Become More Critical Producers Of Multimedia, Jonathan William Ostenson
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Classroom teachers have been encouraged to incorporate more multimedia production in the classroom as a means of helping students develop critical media literacy skills. However, they have not always been well trained in how to evaluate the work students create; many teachers struggle to know which criteria to use in assessing student work. This article outlines criteria from the fields of visual and film art that can inform both assessment and instruction. These criteria include color, angles, lighting, sequencing, and transitions. Approaches to teaching these criteria are also discussed.

The Markings Of A New Pencil: Introducing Programming-As-Writing In The Middle School Classroom, Quinn Burke
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Using the setting of a writing workshop to facilitate a deliberate process to learn computer programming, this exploratory study investigates where there is a natural overlap between programming and writing through the storytelling motif, and to what extent existing language arts coursework and pedagogy can be leveraged to introduce this new form of digital composition to middle-school children. Whereas previous studies linking children’s programming with storytelling did so within the informal afterschool clubs, this study focuses on integrating computer science into the classroom, aligning curricula to core-content English language arts instruction.

Making Sense Of Tv For Children: The Case Of Portugal, Sara Pereira, Manuel Pinto
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Empowering children for a critical and judicious use and consumption of media is a main objective of media literacy. This paper aims to examine the range of television programs available for children in Portugal through a comparative analysis of the programming for children broadcast by the four Portuguese terrestrial channels (RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TVI) over the course of a year. A content analysis of 4,491 programs reveals that about one third have an explicit educational goal and that preschool children are the primary target audience for children’s television. There are clear differences among Portuguese public and private channels in …

Background/Aims: The small molecule, Tolfenamic acid (TA) has shown anti-cancer activity in pre-clinical models and is currently in Phase I clinical trials at MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. Since specificity and toxicity are major concerns for investigational agents, we tested the effect of TA on specific targets, and assessed the cellular and organismal toxicity representing pre-clinical studies in cancer. Methods: Panc1, L3.6pl, and MiaPaCa-2 (pancreatic cancer), hTERT-HPNE(normal), and differentiated/un-differentiated SH-SY5Y (neuroblastoma) cells were treated with increasing concentrations of TA. Cell viability and effect on specific molecular targets, Sp1 and survivin were determined. Athymic nude mice were treated with vehicle or …

An efficient surveillance system is a crucial factor in identifying, monitoring and tackling outbreaks of infectious diseases. Scarcity of data and limited amounts of economic resources require a targeted effort from public health authorities. In this paper, we propose a mathematical method to identify areas where surveillance is critical and low reporting rates might leave epidemics undetected. Our approach combines the use of reference-based susceptible-exposed-infectious models and observed reporting data;We propose two different specifications, for constant and time-varying surveillance, respectively. Our case study is centred around the spread of the raccoon rabies epidemic in the state of New York, using …
The Role Of Flow Sensing By The Lateral Line System In Prey Detection In Two African Cichlid Fishes, Margot Anita Bergstrom Schwalbe
The Role Of Flow Sensing By The Lateral Line System In Prey Detection In Two African Cichlid Fishes, Margot Anita Bergstrom Schwalbe
Open Access Dissertations
The mechanosensory lateral line system is found in all fishes and mediates critical behaviors, including prey detection. Widened canals, one of the four patterns of cranial lateral line canals found among teleosts, tend to be found in benthic fishes and/or fishes that live in hydrodynamically quiet or light-limited environments, such as the deep sea. Little is known about the functional significance of widened canals because most fishes with this morphology are inaccessible for laboratory study. A representative of one genus of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes, Aulonocara, has widened canals and provides an opportunity to investigate the role of widened …

The establishment of a complete genomic sequence of silkworm, the model species of Lepidoptera, laid a foundation for its functional genomics. A more complete annotation of the genome will benefit functional and comparative studies and accelerate extensive industrial applications for this insect. To realize these goals, we embarked upon a large-scale full-length cDNA collection from 21 full-length cDNA libraries derived from 14 tissues of the domesticated silkworm and performed full sequencing by primer walking for 11,104 full-length cDNAs. The large average intron size was 1904 bp, resulting from a high accumulation of transposons. Using gene models predicted by GLEAN and …
