You Are What You Eat: Investigating Food Discourse And Digitally-Mediated Identities, Katelyn Leigh Burton
You Are What You Eat: Investigating Food Discourse And Digitally-Mediated Identities, Katelyn Leigh Burton
Open Access Dissertations
My dissertation, You Are What You Eat: Understanding Food Discourse and Digitally-Mediated Identities, investigates the rhetorical nature of digital identity creation and management and the role of food discourse within these practices. According to Pierre Bourdieu (1984), “Taste classifies, and it classifies the classifier. Social subjects, classified by their classifications, distinguish themselves by the distinctions they make, between the beautiful and the ugly, the distinguished and the vulgar” (6)… and perhaps also between the delicious and the unappetizing, fast food and haute cuisine. Within this project, I use a rhetorical lens to explore digital identity constructions within the food …
Improved Modeling Of Image-Guided Thermal Ablation Procedures Towards Patient-Specific Treatment Planning Applications, Garron Deshazer
Improved Modeling Of Image-Guided Thermal Ablation Procedures Towards Patient-Specific Treatment Planning Applications, Garron Deshazer
Open Access Dissertations
Microwave ablation (MWA) is a minimally-invasive modality that is playing an increasingly vital role in the treatment of cancer and benign disease. These procedures involve the use of a microwave antenna (or an array of antennas) to deliver energy to raise tissue temperature above a thermal threshold to induce irreversible cell damage. Commonly used clinical MWA systems operate at frequencies of 2450 MHz and 915 MHz. Image-guided percutaneous MWA treatments can be guided by intraoperative ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy, which allows the physician to deliver treatments precisely. As such, image-guided MWA has received substantial attention for the treatment …
Prescriptions Of Intergroup Conflict: The Role Of Implicit And Explicit Associations Of Violence, Justine N. Egan
Prescriptions Of Intergroup Conflict: The Role Of Implicit And Explicit Associations Of Violence, Justine N. Egan
Open Access Dissertations
Violence is pervasive in our world. The acceptability of violence as a societal norm sets the stage for interpersonal and intergroup conflicts. One source of such conflict is that individuals differ in how they perceive violence and violent behavior. Previous research found that individuals differ in their explicit attitude evaluations of violence. The first manuscript in this dissertation expanded upon this research area with an examination of implicit attitude evaluations of violence. This manuscript addressed the creation of a new measure of implicit attitude evaluations of violence and nonviolence using the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Participants were asked about their …
Epigenetic Pathways Involved In Response To Lead (Pb) Exposure In The Aging Brain: Relevance To Alzheimer's Disease, Aseel Eid
Open Access Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) has a complicated pathology with many potential etiologies. In patients, a diagnosis of AD is confirmed at the time of autopsy by the presence of two major pathological hallmarks: the amyloid beta plaque (Aβ plaque) and the neurofibrillary tangle (NFTs). The late-onset (LOAD) form of this disease has no clear genetic etiology, with the exception of an increased risk of carrying the APOE4 allele. Therefore, research has focused on identifying environmental risk factors in its etiology. Our lab has a legacy of studying environmental exposure to lead (Pb) during early development. We have shown in previous publications …
Cadmium Contributes To Breast Cancer Development By Influencing Cell Adhesion Network, Zhengxi Wei
Cadmium Contributes To Breast Cancer Development By Influencing Cell Adhesion Network, Zhengxi Wei
Open Access Dissertations
Cadmium (Cd) is carcinogenic and a well-established human health risk. Epidemiological and experimental studies have demonstrated that Cd is associated with breast cancer. We reported previously that Cd promoted breast cancer cell growth. Whether Cd treatment also causes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and progression to metastasis in breast epithelial cells is unknown. The dissertation described here investigated the effect of Cd in breast cancer progression.
Noncancerous breast epithelial MCF10A cells, non-metastatic HCC 1937 and HCC 38 cells, and metastatic MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with 1 or 3 µM Cd for 4 weeks. The increase in the expressions of N-cadherin and vimentin …

Parent Behaviors In Relation To Characteristics Of Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amy C. Laurent
Open Access Dissertations
Emotional self-regulation (ESR) challenges are well documented in the developmental profiles of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); however, less is known about the development of ESR and the role of parents in ESR development for this population. This study explored the associations between diagnostically significant characteristics of children with ASD (i.e., social communication profile and sensory processing abilities) and parent behaviors associated with development of a child’s ESR.
Participants were 37 children previously diagnosed with ASD and their parents recruited throughout Southern New England. The children’s ages ranged between 30-48 months. The study was a cross sectional design involving …

Metagenomic Signatures Of Bacterial Adaptation To Life In The Phyllosphere Of A Salt-Secreting Desert Tree, Omri M. Finkel, Tom O. Delmont, Anton F. Post, Shimshon Belkin
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The leaves of Tamarix aphylla, a globally distributed, salt-secreting desert tree, are dotted with alkaline droplets of high salinity. To successfully inhabit these organic carbon-rich droplets, bacteria need to be adapted to multiple stress factors, including high salinity, high alkalinity, high UV radiation, and periodic desiccation. To identify genes that are important for survival in this harsh habitat, microbial community DNA was extracted from the leaf surfaces of 10 Tamarix aphylla trees along a 350-km longitudinal gradient. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing, contig assembly, and binning yielded 17 genome bins, six of which were >80% complete. These genomic bins, representing three phyla …

Diurnal Variation Of Testosterone In Beluga Whale Blow, Renee Bakker
Diurnal Variation Of Testosterone In Beluga Whale Blow, Renee Bakker
Senior Honors Projects
Studies on the concentrations of certain hormones in cetaceans and their effects on cetacean biology are useful to determining physical conditions such as age, sex, and reproductive status of individuals. Hormone concentrations can be determined through blood samples, but collection of blow (exhaled respiratory vapor) has proven to be a noninvasive method of obtaining samples that can be analyzed for hormone concentrations. The existence of diurnal variation in hormone concentrations greatly affects the value of what time of day samples are collected. Previous studies have found that other mammalian species exhibit diurnal variation of testosterone and that for many species …

Motility is a key trait that phytoplankton utilize to navigate the heterogeneous marine environment. Quantifying both intra- and inter-specific variability in trait distributions is key to utilizing traits to distinguish groups of organisms and assess their ecological function. Because examinations of intra-specific variability are rare, here we measured three-dimensional movement behaviors and distribution patterns of seven genetically distinct strains of the ichthyotoxic raphidophyte, Heterosigma akashiwo. Strains were collected from different ocean basins but geographic distance between isolates was a poor predictor of genetic relatedness among strains. Observed behaviors were significantly different among all strains examined, with swimming speed and …

The number of foodborne illness outbreaks increased in the US from 2001 to 2010, and 17% of them were associated with produce. Higher risk, whole produce sold at farmers' markets presents unique challenges to food safety practices in regard to temperature controls, potable water, and exposure to contaminants. The purpose of this study is to use direct observations to identify unsafe food handling practices among vendors selling higher risk produce at Rhode Island farmers' markets. This study used, as a tool for data acquisition, a Smartphone application developed to allow concealed direct observations of actual vendors' practices at farmers' markets. …

Analysis Of Cell-Mediated Immune Responses In Support Of Dengue Vaccine Development Efforts, Alan L. Rothman, Jeffrey R. Currier, Heather L. Friberg, Anuja Mathew
Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications
Dengue vaccine development has made significant strides, but a better understanding of how vaccine-induced immune responses correlate with vaccine efficacy can greatly accelerate development, testing, and deployment as well as ameliorate potential risks and safety concerns. Advances in basic immunology knowledge and techniques have already improved our understanding of cell-mediated immunity of natural dengue virus infection and vaccination. We conclude that the evidence base is adequate to argue for inclusion of assessments of cell-mediated immunity as part of clinical trials of dengue vaccines, although further research to identify useful correlates of protective immunity is needed.

Assessing Shoreline Exposure And Oyster Habitat Suitability Maximizes Potential Success For Sustainable Shoreline Protection Using Restored Oyster Reefs, Megan K. La Peyre, Kayla Serra, T. Andrew Joyner, Austin T. Humphries
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Oyster reefs provide valuable ecosystem services that contribute to coastal resilience. Unfortunately, many reefs have been degraded or removed completely, and there are increased efforts to restore oysters in many coastal areas. In particular, much attention has recently been given to the restoration of shellfish reefs along eroding shorelines to reduce erosion. Such fringing reef approaches, however, often lack empirical data to identify locations where reefs are most effective in reducing marsh erosion, or fully take into account habitat suitability. Using monitoring data from 5 separate fringing reef projects across coastal Louisiana, we quantify shoreline exposure (fetch + wind direction …

Predation Risk Perception, Food Density And Conspecific Cues Shape Foraging Decisions In A Tropical Lizard, Maximilian Drakeley, Oriol Lapiedra, Jason J. Kolbe
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
When foraging, animals can maximize their fitness if they are able to tailor their foraging decisions to current environmental conditions. When making foraging decisions, individuals need to assess the benefits of foraging while accounting for the potential risks of being captured by a predator. However, whether and how different factors interact to shape these decisions is not yet well understood, especially in individual foragers. Here we present a standardized set of manipulative field experiments in the form of foraging assays in the tropical lizard Anolis cristatellus in Puerto Rico. We presented male lizards with foraging opportunities to test how the …

Development And Validation Of An Epitope Prediction Tool For Swine (Pigmatrix) Based On The Pocket Profile Method, Andres H. Gutiérrez, William D. Martin, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Frances Terry, Leonard Moise, Anne S. De Groot
Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications
Background:
T cell epitope prediction tools and associated vaccine design algorithms have accelerated the development of vaccines for humans. Predictive tools for swine and other food animals are not as well developed, primarily because the data required to develop the tools are lacking. Here, we overcome a lack of T cell epitope data to construct swine epitope predictors by systematically leveraging available human information. Applying the “pocket profile method”, we use sequence and structural similarities in the binding pockets of human and swine major histocompatibility complex proteins to infer Swine Leukocyte Antigen (SLA) peptide binding preferences.
We developed epitope-prediction matrices …

While the management of biological invasions is often characterized by a series of single-species decisions, invasive species exist within larger food webs. These biotic interactions can alter the impact of control/eradication programs and may cause suppression efforts to inadvertently facilitate invasion spread and impact. We document the rapid replacement of the invasive Bemisia Middle East–Asia Minor I (MEAM1) cryptic biotype by the cryptic Mediterranean (MED) biotype throughout China and demonstrate that MED is more tolerant of insecticides and a better vector of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) than MEAM1. While MEAM1 usually excludes MED under natural conditions, insecticide application …

Media-Educational Habitus Of Future Educators In The Context Of Education In Day-Care Centers, Henrike Friedrichs
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This doctoral research study has three research questions: (1) How are the forms of media-educational habitus of future educators shaped? (2) What conditions influence whether or not media education is done in day-care centers? The qualitative study (9/2011-6/2012) consists of six semi-structured interviews with media education teachers in educator training, four focus group discussions with future educators in the second year of their courses and four group discussions with future educators in their third year. The analysis using the documentary method shows two different forms of habitus: ‘The day-care center as shelter against 'bad' electronic media’ (type I) and ‘media …

Oyster Reef Restoration Supports Increased Nekton Biomass And Potential Commercial Fishery Value, Austin T. Humphries, Megan K. La Peyre
Oyster Reef Restoration Supports Increased Nekton Biomass And Potential Commercial Fishery Value, Austin T. Humphries, Megan K. La Peyre
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Across the globe, discussions centered on the value of nature drive many conservation and restoration decisions. As a result, justification for management activities increasingly asks for two lines of evidence: (1) biological proof of augmented ecosystem function or service, and (2) monetary valuation of these services. For oyster reefs, which have seen significant global declines and increasing restoration work, the need to provide both biological and monetary evidence of reef services on a local-level has become more critical in a time of declining resources. Here, we quantified species biomass and potential commercial value of nekton collected from restored oyster ( …

The New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis) is a high conservation priority in the Northeastern United States and has been listed as a candidate species under the Endangered Species Act. Loss of early successional habitat is the most common explanation for the decline of the species, which is considered to require habitat with dense low vegetation and limited overstory tree canopy. Federal and state wildlife agencies actively encourage landowners to create this habitat type by clearcutting blocks of forest. However, there are recent indications that the species also occupies sites with moderate overstory tree canopy cover. This is important …

Current strategies for early detection of breast and other cancers are limited in part because some lesions identified as potentially malignant do not develop into aggressive tumors. Acid pH has been suggested as a key characteristic of aggressive tumors that might distinguish aggressive lesions from more indolent pathology. We therefore investigated the novel class of molecules, pH low insertion peptides (pHLIPs), as markers of low pH in tumor allografts and of malignant lesions in a mouse model of spontaneous breast cancer, BALB/neu-T. pHLIP Variant 3 (Var3) conjugated with fluorescent Alexa546 was shown to insert into tumor spheroids in a sequence-specific …

Background:
Infection with dengue virus results in a wide range of clinical manifestations from dengue fever (DF), a self-limited febrile illness, to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which is characterized by plasma leakage and bleeding tendency. Although cardiac involvement has been reported in dengue, the incidence and the extent of cardiac involvement are not well defined.
Methods and Principal Findings:
We characterized the incidence and changes in cardiac function in a prospective in-patient cohort of suspected dengue cases by serial echocardiography. Plasma leakage was detected by serial chest and abdominal ultrasonography. Daily cardiac troponin-T levels were measured. One hundred and eighty …
