Small Things / Bigger Picture: Foucault, Vygotsky And Exclusionary Practices In Schools, Elizabeth Done, Vicky Bamsey May 2025

Small Things / Bigger Picture: Foucault, Vygotsky And Exclusionary Practices In Schools, Elizabeth Done, Vicky Bamsey

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This conceptual paper seeks to identify resonances between the theorising of Vygotsky and Foucault that can explain how events which may not be perceived to be exclusionary by educators may contribute to school exclusion or the self-exclusion of students through home education. We explore the subjective conditions of actions that deviate from the normative standards enshrined in school behaviour policies, drawing on Vygotsky’s concept of perezhivanie which, following Chisholm, we situate in an ars pathetica derived from Foucault. The small things of our title refers to incidents, interactions or micro-practices that may be perceived as insignificant by educators but which, …

We present complete results for the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment aμ in the short- and intermediate-distance window regions, which account for roughly 10% and 35% of the total HVP contribution to aμ, respectively. In particular, we perform lattice-QCD calculations for the isospin-symmetric connected and disconnected contributions, as well as corrections due to strong-isospin breaking. For the short-distance window observables, we investigate the so-called log-enhancement effects as well as the significant oscillations associated with staggered quarks in this region. For the dominant, isospin-symmetric light-quark-connected contribution, we obtain aμll,SD(conn)=48.139(11)stat(91)syst[92]total×10-10 and aμll,W(conn)=206.90(14)stat(61)syst[63]total×10-10. What Kind Of Hegemony? The European Union In Its Region, Patrick Holden May 2025

What Kind Of Hegemony? The European Union In Its Region, Patrick Holden

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Despite many crises the European Union has sustained deep geoeconomic power throughout Europe. This consensual, flexible and structural form of power is best understood as hegemonic in nature. The mix of supranationalism with enduring intergovernmentalism has forged a unique form of ‘regional hegemony’ that can be understood in Neo-Gramscian terms but differs from critical understandings of ‘neoliberal hegemony’. The challenge of Brexit inspired the latent power structures of the EU to the surface. The memoirs of EU leaders over this period offer insights into the justification of, and operation, of EU hegemony. The EU-27 controlled the Brexit process throughout, imposing …

Case Note - Tousi V Gadydukova: Are You Transferring Your Joint Tenancy?, Goodtime Okara

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This case note reflects on the recent Court of Appeal’s decision in Tousi v Gadydukova [2024]ECWA Civ 203 which focused on transferring a joint tenancy under sections 53, 62(1), andschedule 7 of the Family Law Act (FLA) 1996. It interrogated if the parties to a “void” marriagewere included in the definition of “cohabitants” in paragraph 3 of the FLA 1996, or if paragraph2 would apply to them instead. Hence, this case note explores the facts in Tousi’s case, thecourt’s decision, and its implications on the transfer of tenancy under the FLA, housing, andproperty rights in England and Wales.

This chapter aims to help readers prepare for going to 'the field'- the location(s) where data will be collected. We discuss starting a new field site, collaborating at established sites, and practical strategies for building and maintaining ties to the field site longitudinally. Throughout, we emphasize that developing trusting relationships with the community is critical to ethical research practice and essential for good science. Starting from this principle, we review the practical strategies for relationship-building and establishing ethical research practices, especially in regard to work with children and in settings with little to no infrastructure for research oversight. Also, personal …

A Novel Method For Information Hiding In Images, Ali Al-Nuaimi, Shaymaa Al-Juboori

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Information security is a fundamental principle during data transmission. The main threat to information security is hacking. They are focusing on finding new techniques to breach encryption methods. Therefore, developing new approaches for hiding information against hacker attacks is a potential solution. Different steganography methods are available for hiding information, such as in texts, disk space, network packets, audio and images. In contrast to cryptography, which is concerned with data encryption. Steganography is the art of hiding transmitted information by using seemingly harmless carriers to hide the presence of information. Steganography is cost-effective and unrelated to hardware components. This study …

Exploring The International Terminology Associated With Nurses Caring For Neonates, Infants, Children, Young People And Their Families., Matt Carey, Jane Coad, Imelda Coyne, Suja Somanadhan, Sarah Neill

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The terminology used for Registered Nurses specializing in caring for neonates, infants, children, young people (CYP), and their families varies globally. While many countries’ nursing students qualify as “Registered Nurses” upon completion of undergraduate education, specialist titles like “Children’s Nurses” in the United Kingdom or “Pediatric Nurses” in Italy denote expertise in CYP care. In countries like the United States and Canada, neonatal and pediatric nursing specialization typically requires postgraduate study. However, there is limited evidence on the range of international terms for nurses in this field. This expert opinion paper presents the results from a scoping survey designed to …

What Are The Effects Of Time-Restricted Eating Upon Metabolic Health Outcomes In Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome: A Scoping Review, Rory J Heath, Jessie Welbourne, Daniel Martin May 2025

What Are The Effects Of Time-Restricted Eating Upon Metabolic Health Outcomes In Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome: A Scoping Review, Rory J Heath, Jessie Welbourne, Daniel Martin

Peninsula Medical School

The primary objective of this scoping review (ScR) was to assess the breadth and type of evidence related to time-restricted eating (TRE) as an intervention to modify metabolic health outcomes in individuals with diagnosed metabolic syndrome (MetS), a major health challenge due to increasing prevalence and association with other chronic diseases. MetS comprises three or more of hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, dyslipidaemia, dysregulated glucose homeostasis, and abdominal obesity. TRE, also known as time-restricted feeding (TRF), restricts food intake to specific time windows within a day, for example, a 10-h eating period between 10:00 and 20:00. Via multiple mechanisms, TRE interventions may provide …

Creative Coastal Futures: Developing Cultural And Creative Industries, Katharine Willis, Chris Bennewith, Kasper De Graaf

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The UK is a coastal country, no one lives more than 80 miles from the coast, and indeed when you get down to into Cornwall and Devon this reduces to just 20 miles. Our coasts are a rich source of natural and cultural assets replete with places people value, visit and choose to live in. Yet our coastal communities are some of the most overlooked, challenged and deprived in the country. The strengths that exist in our coastal areas – around natural resources and pockets of specialised skills – are compromised by low levels of economic capacity and activity, aggravated …

Combining Historical And Citizen Science Jellyfish Records To Inform Marine Biodiversity Management, John Terenzini, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop, Laura J. Falkenberg May 2025

Combining Historical And Citizen Science Jellyfish Records To Inform Marine Biodiversity Management, John Terenzini, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop, Laura J. Falkenberg

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Effective management of ecosystems requires knowledge of biodiversity and how it is changing. There are, however, some species and regions for which such data are missing. Combining historical records with those added using non-traditional monitoring methods such as citizen science can fill this gap. Jellyfish are one group for which such an approach is advantageous as jellyfish are difficult to observe, with records particularly lacking for understudied regions outside of Europe and North America. Using Hong Kong as an example, we combine historical jellyfish observation records obtained using traditional methods (published from 1910 to current day) with recent records facilitated …

We are surrounded, in both indoor and outdoor environments, by air containing particles of biological origin (bioaerosols). We constantly inhale them, and, depending upon their size, they deposit in different parts of our airways. Despite their ubiquitous nature and our constant exposure, bioaerosol diversity and composition of the environment are not well characterized, and we understand little about which bioaerosols we are exposed to and how this impacts our health, either positively or negatively. Indoor/Outdoor Bioaerosols Interface and Relationships Network (BioAirNet), a Clean Air Programme-funded network, has recognized the need for the bioaerosol community to reflect on the current challenges …

Sevoflurane Sedation – Blind Alley Or Cunning Plan?, J Robert Sneyd, Anthony R. Absalom

More Faculty of Health Research

Low-dose inhaled sevoflurane sedation impaired volunteers' ability to complete a button-press task, without significant cardiorespiratory compromise. Patient-controlled sedation using sevoflurane might be feasible, however regulatory hurdles require proof of safety and efficacy through clinical trials. Whilst a promising concept, it must be demonstrated that patients cannot induce unconsciousness on their own, despite any interactions with opioid analgesics. Significant steps remain before practical, patient-controlled sevoflurane sedation can be implemented.

The Impact Of Dwell Time On The Contextual Effect Of Visual And Passive Lead-In Movements, Laura Alvarez-Hidalgo, David W. Franklin, Ian S. Howard

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Contextual cues arising from distinct movements are crucial in shaping control strategies for human movement. Here, we examine the impact of visual and passive lead-in movement cues on unimanual motor learning, focusing on the influence of “dwell time,” where two-part movements are separated by the interval between the end of the first movement and the start of the second. We used a robotic manipulandum to implement a point-to-point interference task with switching opposing viscous curl fields in male and female human participants. Consistent with prior research, in both visual and passive lead-in conditions, participants showed significant adaptation to opposing dynamics …

Children and young people’s mental health and well-being has seen a dramatic decline. In the UK, this has been exacerbated by service retrenchment associated with austerity, with evidence of increasing health inequalities. Service innovation that is grounded in practice, has ongoing learning, and is co-designed with children and young people is required now. This can provide creative solutions within the local context and contribute to the fledgling evidence base that explores complex mechanisms of impact. This methodological reflection describes a co-design process of a bespoke, group-based ecotherapy programme: from early piloting using appreciative enquiry before COVID-19 by the mental health, …

The global challenge of marine plastic pollution requires systemic change in our relationship with plastic. Thecurrent linear plastic economy must transition to a sustainable circular model, but is hindered by behaviouralchange difficulties, particularly in coastal regions facing resource limitations and a lack of research attention. This study investigates waste management (WM) behaviours in Java and Bali, Indonesia, through a householdsurvey (N = 506). By examining the roles of community attachment and environmental concern in WM behaviours, we contribute to the theoretical understanding of these concepts within a novel context. Our findingsreveal that community attachment and environmental concern predict WM behaviours, yet …

Generating Training Events For Building Cyber-Physical Security Skills, Avanthika Vineetha Harish, Kimberly Tam, Kevin Jones

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

As the threat of cyber attacks increases, the cyber security sector continues to train professionals as one form of mitigation. Gamification and infrastructure like cyber ranges have been proven useful in training cyber security specialists to detect and react to cyber-attacks in information technology. However, a subset of all digital threats target cyber-physical systems, not just information systems, and these threats have been growing rapidly in recent years. While those threats are increasing, training specific to cyber-physical threats is not growing as quickly as information technology training solutions. While cyber ranges are useful for training and supporting events like cyber …

Innovative Circular Business Model As A Tool For Applying Rational Consumption Of The Natural Resource Landscape, Nataliia Gavkalova, John Martin, Nadiia Shmygol

Professional Services

Economic growth within the traditional linear production model increases environmental pressure, depleting resources, and raising pollution levels. In contrast, the circular economy promotes closed production cycles, ensuring the repeated use of extracted resources. However, transitioning to this model requires active innovation adoption. Despite its rising popularity, circular economy concepts remain underdeveloped scientifically, lacking formulated models that comprehensively address implementation in both public and private sectors. This study aims to theoretically and practically substantiate the development of an innovative circular business model as a tool for rational natural resource consumption. Achieving this requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating business models, technological innovations, …

Public engagement in marine litter research is increasing. Further advancing this approach requires a critical examination of the benefits of citizen science and the primary challenges that we must overcome. A thematic analysis of survey responses from 56 professionals (scientists and project organisers) who use citizen science to investigate marine litter revealed nine significant benefits alongside ten key challenges. Benefits were identified for the citizen scientists (e.g., learning something new), science (e.g., reducing data collection costs), and the environment (e.g., less plastic waste in the environment). Challenges identified fell within three categories related to: 1) involving citizens in science (e.g., …

V-domain Ig-containing suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA) is a unique immune checkpoint protein, which was reported to display both receptor and ligand activities. However, the mechanisms of regulation of VISTA activity and functions by factors of tumour microenvironment (TME) remain unclear and understanding these processes is required in order to develop successful personalised cancer immunotherapeutic strategies and approaches. Here we report for the very first time that VISTA interacts with another immune checkpoint protein galectin-9 inside the cell most likely facilitating its interaction with TGF-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). This process is required for protection of lysosomes, which is crucial …

We are entering an exciting new era of data-driven weather prediction, where forecast models trained on historical data (including observations and reanalyses) offer an alternative to directly solving the governing equations of fluid dynamics. By capitalizing on a vast amount of available information – and capturing their inherent patterns that are not represented explicitly – such machine learning-based techniques have the potential to increase forecast accuracy, augmenting traditional physics-based equivalents. Here, we adapt and apply a promising machine learning framework – originally proposed by the present authors for regional prediction of ocean waves – to the operational forecasting of the …
