IntroductionHigh quality clinical education research is required to ensure optimal education and training of healthcare professionals. Such research should address stakeholder needs and have a clear route to achieving benefit. We conducted the first UK-wide priority setting exercise for clinical education research to identify research priorities and how they are determined.MethodsWe used a two-stage process, derived from similar studies, to identify the research priorities of stakeholders including funders, regulators, educators and public representatives. Stage one consisted of two rounds of online surveys, gathering free-text suggestions of priorities and rating the resulting statements. A public engagement author advised on wording. Stage …

The Enjoyment Of Live Magic And Its Relation To Other Forms Of Entertainment, Gustav Kuhn, Emma Rustruck ;, Srishti Kiran Pattundeed, Rebecca Chamberlain
School of Psychology
Magic is a performance art that allows us to experience the impossible. We present data from a questionnaire-based study that examined how the liveness and social and physical proximities of a magic performance affects people’s enjoyment and how this relates to other forms of entertainment. We found moderate to strong evidence to suggest a preference for magic performances that were live to when they were presented on video, but this preference for live performances was also found for dance, theatre, visual arts and sport, but not for film music and comedy. People’s enjoyment of live magic correlated positively with all …

Advancements In Mooring Systems For The Oe35 Wave Energy Converter: Dynamic Design And Validation, Chenyu Zhao, Faryal Khalid, Tony Lewis, Sean Barrett, Brian Mcswiney, Rémy Cr. Pascal, Bernardo Kahn, Lars Johanning
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This research presents a comprehensive analysis of the mooring system design for the 1 MW OE35 wave energy converter, which is being developed by the WEDUSEA project. The study centres on the dynamic analysis of mooring configurations using Orcaflex software to simulate the environmental and operational conditions expected at the deployment site. The analysis involved an iterative design and validation process, refined through both numerical modelling and basin testing. These tank tests were crucial for validating the Orcaflex model outcomes by providing a controlled environment to observe the physical behaviours of the proposed mooring configurations under simulated sea conditions. The …
‘ Less Museum And More Like Disney’ The Infantilisation Of Dark Histories: Objective Violence At Bodmin Jail, Siân Lewis, Iain Channing, Oliver Smith
‘ Less Museum And More Like Disney’ The Infantilisation Of Dark Histories: Objective Violence At Bodmin Jail, Siân Lewis, Iain Channing, Oliver Smith
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper uses the Bodmin Jail Attraction in Cornwall, UK, as a case study to explore how sites of dark tourism have been subsumed into infantilised consumer culture. In these commodified, disney-esque forms, rather than being spaces of reflection and education, they act to perpetuate objective violence. This allows us to fetishise the subjective violence of the past and disavow our participation in or acceptance of present and future harms. Using a conceptual framework that connects dark tourism with historical and sensory criminology, we analyse data gathered from a field analysis of Bodmin Jail, alongside the analysis of 1505 Trip …
Facial Sexual Dimorphism And Attractiveness Perception In High Autistic Trait Individuals, Farid Pazhoohi, Leilani Forby, Alan Kingstone
Facial Sexual Dimorphism And Attractiveness Perception In High Autistic Trait Individuals, Farid Pazhoohi, Leilani Forby, Alan Kingstone
School of Psychology
Perceiving and recognizing faces are vital components for social interactions among humans. Extensive prior research has shown that facial sexual dimorphism, a nonverbal social signal, contributes to perceived facial attractiveness for neurotypical individuals. However, there has been no research investigating if that might also be true for high autistic trait individuals. The current study investigates the facial qualities that high autistic trait individuals find attractive in others. In Study 1, faces with altered levels of sexual dimorphism were presented for five seconds, and the gaze behaviour of high and low autistic trait participants was recorded while they rated the attractiveness …
Why Deliberate Practice Is Not A Basis For Teacher Expertise, Jim Hordern, Nick Pratt, Peter Kelly, Katherine Evans
Why Deliberate Practice Is Not A Basis For Teacher Expertise, Jim Hordern, Nick Pratt, Peter Kelly, Katherine Evans
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
In this paper we examine the notion of ‘deliberate practice’, which has formed the basis of several teacher education programmes in England and the United States and promises to improve the quality of teaching via highly structured training programmes. We identify early criticisms of deliberate practice and unpack the assumptions embedded in its underpinning thinking. We demonstrate that deliberate practice is insufficient as a basis for teacher expertise as teaching is not a ‘performance profession’, the activities of teachers cannot all be easily or meaningfully decomposed, and the ‘goals’ of teaching are not solely geared towards maximising measurable student attainment. …

Purpose: Studies have shown that eye rubbing is associated with increased risk of keratoconus (KC). However, the potential mediating roles between eye rubbing and KC remain largely unknown. Hence, this study aims to explore the mediating roles of two specific factors, namely, the inverse of the stiffness parameter at the first applanation (-SPA1) and maximal corneal keratometry (Kmax) values, in the relationship between eye rubbing and KC. Methods: A total of 395 patients with KC and 396 controls from the Chinese keratoconus (CKC) cohort study were included in this case–control analysis. The Spearman correlation and generalized linear regression models were …

The study of crisis management is vital for developing effective strategies that address the unique challenges posed by socio-political and environmental contexts. Despite its importance, there is a notable lack of research on crisis management across various sectors in Malaysia. This highlights the need for comprehensive studies considering the country's challenges and strategies. Through the lens of dynamic capabilities theory, this research aims to fill the gap in existing literature by focusing on Malaysia's distinct socio-economic and cultural dynamics, which may influence the effectiveness of crisis management strategies. Data were collected from 310 employees of Malaysian manufacturing companies and analyzed …
Autistic Traits In Fibromyalgia Are Associated With Hypersensitivity And Central Sensitisation, Helen Johnston, Alison Bacon
Autistic Traits In Fibromyalgia Are Associated With Hypersensitivity And Central Sensitisation, Helen Johnston, Alison Bacon
School of Psychology
Fibromyalgia presents with symptoms of central sensitisation (CS). Allodynia is the defining symptom, with evidence for general hypersensitisation extending beyond the pain symptoms that characterise fibromyalgia, to sensory and psychological domains. Generalised sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) may increase vulnerability to hypersensitisation; while a direct association exists between sensory sensitivity and autistic traits in autistic people, CS symptoms are also associated with autistic traits in a broader participant sample. This study complements previous lines of enquiry by examining the relationship between SPS, CS symptoms and autistic traits in samples with and without fibromyalgia. It proposes that SPS is indirectly associated with …

Interpersonal Synchrony (IPS), the temporal coordination of actions between individuals, plays a crucial role in fostering social interactions, emotion regulation, and communication. While previous research has explored IPS in dyadic settings, little is known about how it can be supported in multi-user full-body interactive environments, especially for neurodivergent populations. This study presents an iterative design investigation of DragonIce, a full-body interactive experience aimed at promoting IPS among children on the Autism Spectrum (AS). Building on findings from a prior study involving 12 male students with autism, we implemented and tested two targeted interaction design modifications: (1) enhanced visual feedback and …

Negotiating Musical Practices In Chilean Prisons During Pinochet’S Dictatorship (1973-1990), Nuria Bonet
Negotiating Musical Practices In Chilean Prisons During Pinochet’S Dictatorship (1973-1990), Nuria Bonet
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Music played many roles in detention centres during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990), as political prisoners played, listened to, wrote, and taught music. Testimonies of survivors describe a variety of musical practices which reflect the political and social realities of their incarceration. While authorities used music to torture and degrade political prisoners, music was also a tool for communication, community-building, catharsis, and entertainment. Who was allowed to play, hear, and choose music in these spaces – and why - is a complex question which reveals narratives of resistance and oppression, while questioning ideas of musical taste in relation to …

Digital Strolls Using Unicdent Toolkit-Part 2: Reimagining The Walking Method For Online Participation, Prashanti Eachempati, John Martin, Sally Hanks, Mona Nasser
Peninsula Dental School
Distance and remoteness no longer pose barriers to conducting meaningful research, as the adaptation of participatory methods can address these challenges effectively. This article examines the transformation of the UniCDent Toolkit, originally designed to capture patients' perceptions of uncertainty in dental environments, for online participatory interactions with dentists. The toolkit, which uses the walking method, incorporates components such as imagery, gallery walks, quadrant mapping, and trade-offs to explore uncertainty in dental practice. Initially, dentists expressed discomfort in sharing their uncertainty in a group setting, prompting a shift to an online format that maintained participant engagement and created a safe space …

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to wirelessly connect billions of physical things to the IT infrastructure. Although there are several radio access technologies available, few of them meet the needs of Internet of Things applications, such as long range, low cost, and low energy consumption. The low data rate of low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies, particularly SigFox, makes them appropriate for Internet of Things applications since the longer the radio link’s useable distance, the lower the data rate. Network reliability is the primary goal of SigFox technology, which aims to deliver data messages successfully through redundancy. This raises concerns …

Mesoscale Modelling For Investigating The Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour Of Geopolymer Concrete, Feiyu Shi, Long Yuan Li, Shanshan Cheng
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Advancing the understanding of the behaviour of geopolymer concrete subjected to both thermal and mechanical loadings provides valuable assistance in the fire safety design of geopolymer concrete structures. Here in this research, a mesoscale modelling technique was proposed to simulate the free thermal expansion and behaviours of geopolymer concrete subjected to two different loading schemes. Results showed that transient thermal strain was clearly observable in the mesoscale modelling, and due to the existence of transient thermal strain, behaviours of geopolymer concrete under heat-then-load and load-then-heat schemes were quite different. Another further close look at the effect of volume fraction of …
Multimodal Person Evaluation: First Impressions From Faces, Voices, And Names, Mila Mileva
Multimodal Person Evaluation: First Impressions From Faces, Voices, And Names, Mila Mileva
School of Psychology
We form a first impression every time we meet someone unfamiliar to us. When this happens, we often have access to information about this person’s appearance, voice and the first thing we learn about them is usually their name. Despite this, much of what we know about social evaluation processes has been almost exclusively based on facial information. Here, approximately 45,000 spontaneous first impression descriptors were sampled to identify the most common judgements we make when presented with information about someone’s face, voice, and name at the same time as well as when presented with information about their voice or …
