Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal Gram-positive bacterium and opportunistic pathogen that exhibits substantial variation in antimicrobial resistance and virulence traits. S. aureus is frequently co-isolated with the fungus Candida albicans, and together they represent the most common microorganisms recovered from biofilm-associated infections originating from both biotic and abiotic surfaces. Despite this clinical relevance, the impact of bacterial intra-species variation on interkingdom interactions remains poorly understood. This study therefore investigated how S. aureus strain heterogeneity influences C. albicans within dual-species biofilms. The majority of the 60 S. aureus strains tested suppressed fungal growth in a contact-dependent manner across different nutrient conditions …

Scientific research is more innovative and impactful when scientists are drawn from diverse backgrounds. However, the scientific community does not reflect the demographics of wider society. Global Majority communities remain underrepresented within science, particularly within senior leadership roles. Here we explore ethnic diversity within UK academic biosciences, using publicly available staff and student demographic data from the UK Higher Education Statistics Authority. We use the Simpson index as a quantitative measure of diversity within the biosciences and construct linear mixed effect models to identify significant predictors of both student and staff ethnic diversity. For staff, there were significant negative effects …

Fostering Multicultural Education And Building Community Resilience In Post-Pandemic Schools In Southwest England, Suparna Bagchi
Fostering Multicultural Education And Building Community Resilience In Post-Pandemic Schools In Southwest England, Suparna Bagchi
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article explores the complexities of practicing meaningful multicultural education in varied sociocultural landscapes, including areas with limited ethnic diversity. Highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic revealed deep-rooted structural inequalities, the article emphasises the need for education systems to address the specific realities of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities. This is because the study findings reveal a lack of curricular representation of BAME communities, time constraints that prevent teachers from incorporating multicultural education into their daily routines, limited understanding around multicultural education among teachers, and a need for recruiting and retaining teachers from diverse communities. This article revisits existing …

Designing Inclusive Immersive Experiences: Intergenerational Codesign Of Heritage And Underwater Extended Reality For Older Adults, Marius N. Varga, Oksana Hagen, Rory Baxter, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Ray B Jones, Amir Aly, Dena Bazazian, Gaudl Swen
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Despite rapid advances in immersive Extended Reality technologies, creating inclusive and accessible experiencesfor older adults remains challenging. Many Extended Realityapplications fail to account for the physical, cognitive, andergonomic needs of older users, resulting in low engagement anddigital exclusion. Cultural heritage and underwater environmentsoffer rich contexts for meaningful interaction and wellbeing. This study explored how intergenerational codesign can informthe development of immersive Extended Reality applicationsfor older adults. Two case studies were undertaken within theICONIC project: a Heritage Extended Reality experience recreating Cotehele, a National Trust heritage site, and an UnderwaterTelepresence experience simulating marine environments. Theobjective was to identify design principles supporting accessibility, …

Simulation-Based Learning In Oral Radiology: Students’ Perceptions Of Training In Intraoral Radiographic Techniques Across Two Dental Institutes, Abeer A. Almashraqi, Ankur Jethlia, Rebecca Glanville, Hanin Daas, Kamran Ali
Peninsula Dental School
Objective: Simulation-based learning (SBL) in oral radiology offers a safe, structured environment that supports students’ transition to clinical practice. However, limited research has captured students' perceptions of SBL for intraoral radiography training. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of dental students about SBL in intraoral radiography using a mixed-methods approach across two dental institutions. Methods: Third-year undergraduate dental students from two institutions were recruited. All students were trained on both periapical (paralleling technique in Institution A and bisecting angle technique in Institution B) and bitewing radiographs using a mannequin. Data were collected through a 9-item Likert-scale survey and three …
