Judgement Analysis Of Patient Management: General Practitioners' Policies And Self-Insight., Clare Harries Jan 1995

Judgement Analysis Of Patient Management: General Practitioners' Policies And Self-Insight., Clare Harries

School of Psychology Theses

In this thesis judgement analysis (multiple linear regression techniques) was used to look at both GPs' decisions to prescribe certain types of drug for patients and their judgements of patients' risk of coronary heart disease. All of these were idiographic analyses in that decision making by each GP was modelled separately. Judgement analysis (paramorphically) describes a subject's judgement or decision making policy in terms of the relative influence of different pieces of information. The amount of information subjects could take into account was limited. For all types of judgement or decision doctors were influenced on average by only four of …

An Exploration And Development Of The Knowledge Foundations Of Social Work, With Particular Reference To Mental Health And Compulsory Admission Assessments, Michael Gerhardt Sheppard Jan 1995

An Exploration And Development Of The Knowledge Foundations Of Social Work, With Particular Reference To Mental Health And Compulsory Admission Assessments, Michael Gerhardt Sheppard

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This submission seeks lo establish the case that this corpus of work makes a significant and original contribution to a central problem for social work as a profession: the status in relation to practice of its formal knowledge base. This issue has generated intensive debate, with some claiming a central place for formal knowledge in practice and others a more peripheral position. The debate is inconclusive, but evidence suggests that social workers do not generally use theory in practice. This has necessitated recourse to a 'subconscious assimilation' thesis, but evidence from the main research studies is inconclusive, because of the …

Analysis Of The Impact Of East European Change Upon European Community And East European Liner Shipping, Gillian Deborah Ledger Jan 1995

Analysis Of The Impact Of East European Change Upon European Community And East European Liner Shipping, Gillian Deborah Ledger

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

In its attempt to analyse the impact of East European change upon the European Community and East European liner shipping industries this thesis covers an extensive range of highly topical subject areas. The wide range of non uniform information gleaned from the research and the question of spurious objectivity form the main arguments behind the use of qualitative rather than quantitative assessment throughout. The diverse study area also necessitated a narrowing to the case of Polish Ocean Lines' North Atlantic operations to enable a meaningful analysis to be carried out. The early part of the thesis examines the background to …

The Learn To Travel Project: A Case Study Of Curriculum Innovation In Primary Schools, Peter Mason Jan 1995

The Learn To Travel Project: A Case Study Of Curriculum Innovation In Primary Schools, Peter Mason

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is a case study of curriculum innovation in the primary school at a time of major change during the introduction of the National Curriculum. It involved a small number of primary schools, teachers and children. In particular the processes and impacts of the innovation were investigated. Action research methodology (Carr and Kemmis, 1986 McNiff, 1988) was employed and teachers' plans, classroom activities and children's responses were analysed. The research informs us about the nature and effects of opportunities created and constraints imposed by the National Curriculum. The case study indicates that teachers responded to the innovation as if …

Statistical Aspects Of Fetal Screening, Christine M Donovan Jan 1995

Statistical Aspects Of Fetal Screening, Christine M Donovan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis discusses the current screening algorithm that is used to detect fetal Down's syndrome. The algorithm combines a model for predicting age related risks and a model for appropriately transformed serum concentrations to produce estimates of risks. A discriminant analysis is used to classify pregnancies as either unaffected or Down's syndrome. The serum concentrations vary with gestational age and the relationship between serum concentrations and gestational age is modelled using regression. These models are discussed and alternative models for these relationships are offered. Concentration values are generally expressed in terms of multiples of the medians for unaffected pregnancies, or …

Control Techniques Applied To Integrated Ship Motion Control, Mohammed Tariq Sharif Jan 1995

Control Techniques Applied To Integrated Ship Motion Control, Mohammed Tariq Sharif

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Fins stabilisers are devices which are fitted to the hull of a ship and utilised to ameliorate its rolling motions. They apply a regulated moment about the ship's axis of roll in order to oppose the sea induced disturbances. Recognising their unsurpassed performance, the Royal Navy, since the 1950's, equips all its vessels with fin stabilisers. It can be shown that the rudders, in vessels of appropriate size, also have the potential to be harnessed as roll stabilisers Rudder Roll Stabilisation (RRS) without degrading the ship's course-keeping. Thus creating a more stable platform for the human operators and equipment. The …

The Flow Of Liquid Polymers Through Fibrous Reinforcements, Patrick Robert Griffin Jan 1995

The Flow Of Liquid Polymers Through Fibrous Reinforcements, Patrick Robert Griffin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), at present, is a semi-automated, low volume production process for fibre reinforced plastics with much work being undertaken to achieve full automation and medium volume production. The efficient and consistent impregnation of thermosetting resin into a reinforcement pack are key requirements in the development of RTM. For mass production and automation accurate predictions of mould fill times are critical in order to plan production. At present, the fill times are predicted by assuming Darcy's law and using experimentally determined permeability value. Permeability measurements display a large amount of scatter which affects the accuracy of simulations of …

Computer Models Of Corrosion In Passivating Systems, Simon Sebastian Phillips Jan 1995

Computer Models Of Corrosion In Passivating Systems, Simon Sebastian Phillips

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Analysis of corrosion in marine and acid environments is a complicated task, involving the interaction of thermodynamic, kinetic and geometrical factors. Two mathematical models which predict corrosion behaviour have been implemented for personal computers. The first program uses an assumption of unidirectional current flow to simplify the prediction of potential distributions for systems of essentially cylindrical geometry containing natural seawater-based electrolytes of differing strength. Using experimentally determined electrochemical and flow rig data, experimental and theoretical results were compared. The correlation between the two was shown to be poor, and this is attributed to the unrepresentative nature of the electrochemical data …

The Effect Of Patient Gender On Medical Decision Making: The Influence Of Decisional Stress, Antonietta Di Caccavo Jan 1995

The Effect Of Patient Gender On Medical Decision Making: The Influence Of Decisional Stress, Antonietta Di Caccavo

School of Psychology Theses

This research investigated the influence of patient gender as a nonclinical variable on treatment decisions made in general practice. Responses to exploratory interviews carried out with 34 GPs supported the relevance of decisional stress in general practice. Decisional conflict theory therefore provided a theoretical basis for predicting that gender differences in management would be most likely to occur under conditions of decisional stress. This is because GPs are likely to rely on gender stereotypes to simplify decision tasks as this allows them to selectively search and appraise information. Responses to interview questions regarding the influence of patient gender on decision …

Cell Division And Migration In A `Genotype' For Neural Networks, A Cangelosi, D Parisi, S Nolfi Nov 1994

Cell Division And Migration In A `Genotype' For Neural Networks, A Cangelosi, D Parisi, S Nolfi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Much research has recently been dedicated to applying genetic algorithms to populations of neural networks. However. While in real organisms the inherited genotype maps in complex ways into the resulting phenotype, in most of this research the development process that creates the individual phenotype is ignored. In this paper we present a model of neural development which includes cell division and cell migration in addition to axonal growth and branching. This reflects, in a very simplified way, what happens in the ontogeny of real organisms. The development process of our artificial organisms shows successive phases of functional differentiation and specialization. …

The Day-To-Day Work Of Primary Headteachers: An Ethnographic Study, Roger James Revell Jan 1994

The Day-To-Day Work Of Primary Headteachers: An Ethnographic Study, Roger James Revell

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

There is a scarcity of empirical data on the nature of primary headteachers' work. Our understanding has to rely heavily on managerial studies or prescriptive commentaries. The study is an ethnographic investigation of my headship and that of other headteachers, using perspectives drawn from symbolic interactionism. Data-collection is by means of open-ended interviews and a one-year journal of my own headship. The findings of the study indicate that the daily work of heads is intense, immediate, pragmatic, discontinuous and unremitting. There are often few opportunities for heads during the day to reflect or make other than short-term plans. Much of …

This study describes and discusses the marine casualties, the effectiveness of existing traffic services, and marine safety and Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) in Korean coastal waters. Marine traffic is comprehensively assessed in Korean waters, an analysis of casualties is undertaken by block scheme. Marine environmental parameters are identified relating to marine casualties as appropriate. Various statistical techniques are employed to evaluate the inter-relationships between individual causal factors, and for the first time effect level is instituted to quantify the relative importance of the causal factors in Korean waters. A further innovation is the examination of the adequacy of existing Korean traffic …

Navigational Efficiency In Marine Traffic Operations In The Port Of Keelung, Bin Lin Jan 1994

Navigational Efficiency In Marine Traffic Operations In The Port Of Keelung, Bin Lin

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The rapid economic growth of Taiwan has been paralleled by an increase in marine. traffic in the port of Keelung. The increase has been evolutionary and, prior to this study, has lacked the benefit of supporting research necessary to ensure no loss in navigational efficiency. The study uses eclectic methodologies to: identify the nature of marine traffic at Keelung; assess the associated risks; and identify measures needed to reduce risk and increase navigational efficiency. For contextual purposes the study reviews current marine traffic operations at Keelung against the background of geographical constraint and environmental conditions. Radar survey and extensive sampling …

Structural Integrity Assessment Using Vibration Data, Olusegun Saheed Salawu Jan 1994

Structural Integrity Assessment Using Vibration Data, Olusegun Saheed Salawu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Engineering structures need to be assessed as part of activities to ensure their continued serviceability. Global methods of assessment which also give an indication of local conditions are most attractive since they are cost effective and flexible. A suitable method with these attributes is vibration monitoring which involves relating dynamic properties, or changes in them, to the integrity of the assessed structure. The present study investigates the application of vibration testing to structural integrity assessment of civil engineering structures. A survey of existing methods of damage detection, location and quantification in structures using vibration testing was conducted. Evaluation of the …

Effect Of Copper On The Gill Structure Of A Euryhaline Crab, Carcinus Maenas (Crustacea: Decapoda), Sarah Louise Lawson Jan 1994

Effect Of Copper On The Gill Structure Of A Euryhaline Crab, Carcinus Maenas (Crustacea: Decapoda), Sarah Louise Lawson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A posterior gill of the common shore crab Carcinus maenas (Crustacea:Decapoda) was used to study the effects of sublethal copper concentrations on gill morphometry, and gill cell ultrastructure and distribution. Primarily, the ultrastructure and distribution of gill cells in the untreated gill of crabs acclimated to 35‰ seawater were characterised. Gill ultrastructure was subsequently shown to vary markedly at 10‰ compared to 35‰ seawater. Ultrastructural and distributional, rather than gross morphological, change occurred in the gill following exposure to copper at each salinity. Ultrastructural studies showed that as the length of copper exposure increased the gill epithelial layer became highly …

Physiological Factors Regulating Appetite In The Lesser Spotted Dogfish Shark, Scyliorhinus Canicula (L.), David William Sims Jan 1994

Physiological Factors Regulating Appetite In The Lesser Spotted Dogfish Shark, Scyliorhinus Canicula (L.), David William Sims

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Some aspects of digestive and systemic function were investigated in relation to their role in the peripheral regulation of appetite in juvenile and adult, S. canicula. This study represents the first evaluation of the physiological factors that contribute to the control of shark appetite. Daily food intake trials on both juvenile and adult dogfish showed repeatable, self-regulated feeding rhythms indicating the existence of an endogenous component to food intake control. After dogfish consumed satiation meals of 7% wet body weight (wbw) the appetite return increased at constant rates as deprivation time increased. The relative rate of food processing was 50% …

Investigation Into The Microstructure, Magnetic Properties And Read/Write Performance Of Thin-Film Media For Perpendicular Recording Computer Disks, Genhua Pan Jan 1993

Investigation Into The Microstructure, Magnetic Properties And Read/Write Performance Of Thin-Film Media For Perpendicular Recording Computer Disks, Genhua Pan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Pronounced effect of under layers on the squareness and slope T of the perpendicular loops of very thin CoCr films was observed. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that, depending on the film microstructure, there are two origins on the anomalous shearing of perpendicular loops of Cc-based perpendicular films: the columnar shape anisotropy and the wall-motion-like magnetization reversal process. For films with larger intercolumnar separation, the contribution of the columnar shape anisotropy to the total demagnetizing factor is mainly responsible for the deshearing of the loops. For continuous perpendicular films, the intergranular exchange coupling controls the magnetization reversal process and the …

An Investigation Of The Thermophysical Properties Of Hydrofluoroalkanes, And The Contribution Of Halocarbons To The Chlorine/Bromine Loading Of The Atmosphere, David Christian Dowdell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A capillary flow gas viscometer has been used to measure the shear viscosities of the hydrofluoroalkanes HFC 134a, HCFC 123, HCFC 124 and the ternary blend MP 39, at pressures up to 0.1 MPa relative to a nitrogen standard. Having applied small correction factors to the measured flow time data, the resultant viscosities are compared to those obtained by other workers (where possible) using alternative techniques. We calculate self diffusion coefficients and hard sphere collision diameters for the molecules within the rigorous Chapman-Enskog kinetic theory of gases, and calculate optimum well depths of the intermolecular interactions using the Extended Law …

What Is The Nature And Process Of Effective Teaching And Learning?, Sylvia Margaret Warham Jan 1993

What Is The Nature And Process Of Effective Teaching And Learning?, Sylvia Margaret Warham

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

Over the last ten years my thinking and writing have been concerned with the nature and process of effective teaching and learning. Although I have tried to present my thinking as a chronological sequence much of the work developed concurrently. Over the period covered by my publications my thinking has focused on three main areas: a. An exploration of the implications for language learning of the shared meaning-making process in reading, reading aloud and writing. (Approx.1978-1982) b. An exploration of the influence that a teacher may have in the shared process of meaning-making and its implications for teaching and learning. …

An Evaluation Of Electronic Fetal Monitoring With Clinical Validation Of St Waveform Analysis During Labour, Jennifer Ann Westgate Jan 1993

An Evaluation Of Electronic Fetal Monitoring With Clinical Validation Of St Waveform Analysis During Labour, Jennifer Ann Westgate

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

Dissatisfaction with the electronic recording of fetal heart rate and uterine contractions (the cardiotocogram or CTG) has resulted in a search for new techniques of monitoring the fetus during labour. It is important that each method has a sound physiological and pathophysiological basis, that a model for the interpretation of changes is elucidated and that each method is thoroughly evaluated before introduction into clinical practice. Analysis of the ST waveform of the fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) is the most advanced of the new techniques under investigation. Experimental studies have shown that elevation of the ST waveform occurs with a switch to …

Mnemodrama : Alessandro Fersen's Parashamanic Training Technique For The Occidental Performer., John C Green

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is the first full-length study of the experiments in performer training undertaken by Alessandro Fersen in his studio laboratory in Rome between 1957 and 1983 and practiced since then in the codified technique which he calls Mizemodrama ( literally, "a drama of memory"). The purpose of my research is twofold: firstly, to focus on the development of the core technique of mnemodrama which is a theatrical simulation of ritual object manipulation employed by shamans in traditional cultures in order to induce an altered state of consciousness. In Fersen's terms such transic techniques provide the contemporary performer with a …
