Sweet Fanny Adams And Sarah's Law: The Creation Of Rhetorical Shorthand In The Print Press, Samantha Pegg
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article considers two cases of female child murder, modern and historical, where the victims have become household names. The framing of these cases in the print press is explored in order to address how similar cases resulted in the divergent use of victims’ names and how the names of both victims became emblematic. It is suggested that addressing ideological backdrops, specifically conceptualisations of childhood and how these can be linked to more disparate concerns, is vital in explaining this etymological divergence. More generally, it is suggested that how an episode has been received is reliant upon how these ideological …

Policing Public Houses In Victorian England, Paul Jennings
Policing Public Houses In Victorian England, Paul Jennings
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article examines the policing of that most important site for leisure and pleasure among the Victorian working-classes – the pub. It begins with an examination of how changes in policing arrangements from the late-eighteenth century into Victoria’s reign both reflected growing societal anxiety over the conduct of drinking places and led to increased action against them. It provides analyses of the overall incidence of prosecution of publicans in the period up to the important licensing legislation of 1869 and 1872. It examines that legislation and its effects and then turns its attention to the offences of permitting drunkenness and …

The Limits Of West German Justice In The 1960s: The Post-War Investigation Of Walter Gieseke (Oberstleutnant Of The Gendarmerie And Ss), G. H. Bennett
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article uses a micro-historical methodology to examine some of the complex problems of bringing to justice Nazi-era war criminals in West Germany in the 1960s. It takes as its focus the failure to bring a case against Walter Gieseke, Oberstleutnant of the Gendarmerie and SS. One of the ‘middle managers’ of the Nazi state Gieseke headed a road building project across the Ukraine which resulted in the murder of substantial numbers of Jewish forced labourers. Under questioning he pursued strategies which maximised the difficulties facing the investigating authorities in West Germany.
Representations Of Justice Executed At Norwich Castle: A Comparative Analysis Of Execution Reports In The Norfolk Chronicle And Bury And Norwich Post, 1805-1867, John Walliss
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Recent years have seen growing interest among historians in newspaper reporting of crime and criminality in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. To date, however, comparatively little academic attention has been paid to the way in which the press, particularly regional newspapers, reported executions. Examining the newspaper reportage of executions at Norwich Castle between 1805-67, this article examines how two newspapers representing different political opinions that circulated in Norfolk during the period, the Tory Norfolk Chronicle and the liberal Bury and Norwich Post, differed in how they reported the executions that took place in the city. The newspapers, it will be …

Justice And Genocide In Bosnia: An Unbridgeable Gap Between Academe And Law?, Gregory Kent
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The 1992-95 war in Bosnia was the worst war on the European continent since WWII. The massive and systematic human rights violations were the worst in Europe since the Holocaust. This article proposes, based on a provisional review of non-legal, mainly social science and humanities literature on the Yugoslav crisis, and on a focused analysis of genocide jurisprudence, that there is a gulf between, on the one hand, academic interpretations of these human rights violations as constituting genocide – with some notable exceptions - and on the other, judicial decisions regarding cases brought at the International Criminal Tribunal for the …

The Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill 2013/14 (hereafter Banking Reform Bill) is set to introduce a new criminal offence of reckless misconduct by senior bank staff. The introduction of such an offence was recommended in the Final Report of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards (PCBS) Changing Banking for Good, published 19 June 2013; as part of a 'package of recommendations to raise standards'. This particular recommendation had been widely anticipated. A short time before this Report, the PCBS Chair, Andrew Tyrie MP, had bemoaned the lack of 'orange jumpsuits' being donned by bankers. Equally, press reportage that 'reckless bankers' …
Violet Van Der Elst's Use Of Spectacle And Militancy In Her Campaign Against The Death Penalty In England, Lizzie Seal
Violet Van Der Elst's Use Of Spectacle And Militancy In Her Campaign Against The Death Penalty In England, Lizzie Seal
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Violet van der Elst launched her campaign against the death penalty in the mid-1930s. She employed direct action tactics outside prisons on execution morning, such as leading the crowd in song and breaking through police cordons. These were not only designed to engage and include the crowd that was present, but also to grab the attention of newspaper readers. Her approach to campaigning made deliberate use of spectacle and, coupled with her direct action techniques, can be understood as a form of post-suffragette militancy. This article explores the influence of the legacy of the suffragette movement on Violet van der …

Bearing Silent Witness: A Grandfather's Secret Attestation To German War Crimes In Occupied France, Mckay M. Smith
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Scholars have acknowledged that the study of World War II era intelligence can be an extremely arduous undertaking. Intelligence tradecraft, by its very nature, requires that certain information remain secret. It necessitates the sustained concealment of activities or events. Moreover, this government emphasis on secrecy often results in the suppression of sensitive information from historians and citizens alike. Thus, one must turn to declassified records of the past to reshape modern conceptions of history. This article should be regarded as a spirited departure from traditional scholarship. Specifically, it utilizes the case study method to communicate a powerful message related to …
On The Dangerous Game Of Collaborating With Nazis: An Historico-Socio-Legal Reconstruction Of That Forgotten Past Located Within Silence, Absence And [Dis]Connections Between Law's History And Critical Legal Scholarship, Lorie Charlesworth
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Responses to the deliberately provocative title are contextualised within this writer’s research findings to date concerning the Allied investigation and prosecution of ‘minor’ war crimes trials after WWII. From these the writer considered the survival of certain categories of Nazi thought, permitting some critical legal theorists to admit the Nazi Carl Schmitt and his anti-liberal concept of ‘concrete orders’ into its canon of critical texts. In this, some theorists appear concerned more with testing or searching for a ‘pure idea’ of law than noting a moral absence within such legal scholarship. That is, the nature of the transgressive, taboobreaking, politically …
The Unmanly Fear: Extortion Before The Twentieth Century, Joseph S. Bonica
The Unmanly Fear: Extortion Before The Twentieth Century, Joseph S. Bonica
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This essay concerns the history of extortion in American law and culture, highlighting the shift from extortion as a paradigmatically male enterprise to one inseparably associated with women. Before the nineteenth-century, extortion was figured as an assault on a victim’s consent. Since men monopolized consent, extortion unfolded as a contest between legal subjects over political manhood. After the mid-nineteenth-century, a new class of ‘respectable’ victims, openly terrified by women’s threats, made unprecedented claims for legal protection. In response, well-placed courts wrote consent out of the equation, broadening the scope of extortionous threats to unleash the familiar fin-de-siècle tide of sex …

In The Shadow Of Terror: An Exploration Of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Attachment Styles And Coping Strategies: Response To The Experience Of Being In A Bombing Attack Among Iraqi People, Fuaad Mohammed Freh
School of Psychology Theses
Despite the widespread prevalence of bombing in Iraq, no study has investigated its psychological impact on civilians. This thesis aimed to address this gap in the literature. Four studies were conducted consequently using civilians in Iraq. The first study aimed to explore the subjective experience in response to the bombing attack. A qualitative approach was taken and twenty semi-structured interviews were employed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This identified seven categories including interpersonal relationships, loss of self, changes in attachment, shattering of world assumptions. Subsequent studies were then conducted to understand these themes as possible predictors of PTSD …

Simulating Relativistic Laser Matter Interactions, Nicola Iji
Simulating Relativistic Laser Matter Interactions, Nicola Iji
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
With recent advances in laser technology we have seen laser intensities reach the order of 10^22 W/cm2, with higher intensities anticipated in the near future. This thesis concerns a classical approach to the simulation of laser matter interactions for intensities above the relativistic threshold of 10^18 W/cm2. A pulsed plane wave model is used to simulate the laser fields. In particular this thesis aims to determine the effect of radiation reaction on relativistic interactions as well as proposing an effective method of vacuum laser acceleration from rest. We consider the equations of motion accounting for radiative effects and present their …

Humour Styles, Personality And Psychological Well-Being: What’S Humour Got To Do With It?, W Ruch, S Heintz
School of Psychology
The Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) by Martin et al. (2003) measures four humour styles, namely affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive and self-defeating. In contrast to former humour instruments, the HSQ has strong relations to various measures of psychological well-being. However, its incremental validity in relation to basic personality traits has not been sufficiently studied. Two studies analysed how much unique variance the HSQ contributed to predicting psychological well-being over and above personality. While the affiliative, self-enhancing and self-defeating humour style were potent predictors of well-being in Study 1, the results also indicated that these humour styles had small effects when personality was …
Self Organisation And Hierarchical Concept Representation In Networks Of Spiking Neurons, Timothy Rumbell
Self Organisation And Hierarchical Concept Representation In Networks Of Spiking Neurons, Timothy Rumbell
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The aim of this work is to introduce modular processing mechanisms for cortical functions implemented in networks of spiking neurons. Neural maps are a feature of cortical processing found to be generic throughout sensory cortical areas, and self-organisation to the fundamental properties of input spike trains has been shown to be an important property of cortical organisation. Additionally, oscillatory behaviour, temporal coding of information, and learning through spike timing dependent plasticity are all frequently observed in the cortex. The traditional self-organising map (SOM) algorithm attempts to capture the computational properties of this cortical self-organisation in a neural network. As such, …

Container Shipping Risk Management: A Case Study Of Taiwan Container Shipping Industry, Chia-Hsun Chang
Container Shipping Risk Management: A Case Study Of Taiwan Container Shipping Industry, Chia-Hsun Chang
Plymouth Business School Theses
Whilst container shipping has become increasingly important over the past few decades due to its obvious advantages, container shipping companies have faced various risks from different sources in their operations. Systematic academic studies on this topic are few; and in light of this, this study aims to systematically explore and analyse the risks in container shipping operations and to examine the applicable risk mitigation strategies in a logistics perspective, including information flow, physical flow, and payment flow. This thesis uses Taiwan container shipping industry as a case study, and borrows four steps of risk management as the main method, which …

Exogenous Application Of Molybdenum Affects The Expression Of Cbf14 And The Development Of Frost Tolerance In Wheat., Mohammed Al-Issawi, Hail Z. Rihan, Wondwossen Abate Woldie, Stephen Burchett, Michael P. Fuller
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Wheat is able to cold acclimate in response to low temperatures and thereby increase its frost tolerance and the extent of this acclimation is greater in winter genotypes compared to spring genotypes. Such up-regulation of frost tolerance is controlled by Cbf transcription factors. Molybdenum (Mo) application has been shown to enhance frost tolerance of wheat and this study aimed to investigate the effect of Mo on the development of frost tolerance in winter and spring wheat. Results showed that Mo treatment increased the expression of Cbf14 in wheat under non-acclimating condition but did not alter frost tolerance. However, when Mo …

Epibenthic Assessment Of A Renewable Tidal Energy Site, Emma V. Sheehan, Sarah C. Gall, Sophie L. Cousens, Martin J. Attrill
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Concern over global climate change as a result of fossil fuel use has resulted in energy production from renewable sources. Marine renewable energy devices provide clean electricity but can also cause physical disturbance to the local environment. There is a considerable paucity of ecological data at potential marine renewable energy sites that is needed to assess potential future impacts and allow optimal siting of devices. Here, we provide a baseline benthic survey for the Big Russel in Guernsey, UK, a potential site for tidal energy development. To assess the suitability of proposed sites for marine renewable energy in the Big …
