Corporate Responsibility, Marketing, And Reputation: A Stakeholder Approach For Sustainable Car Fleet Management, Roland Vogt Jan 2014

Corporate Responsibility, Marketing, And Reputation: A Stakeholder Approach For Sustainable Car Fleet Management, Roland Vogt

Plymouth Business School Theses

Corporate responsibility is increasingly involved in corporate reputation, and so, in the economic success of a company. Car fleet operating companies are exposed to criticism and, as a direct result of this many corporate protagonists responsible for the operation of car fleets are developing measures to decrease CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. A second trend is the increasing usage of image-generating marketing actions in the worldwide ‘information society’. For various reasons, these image campaigns do not always lead to the expected improvements in corporate reputation. The crucial question is, how do these marketing actions, in the name of corporate social …

Escherichia coli ST131 is now recognised as a leading contributor to urinary tract and bloodstream infections in both community and clinical settings. Here we present the complete, annotated genome of E. coli EC958, which was isolated from the urine of a patient presenting with a urinary tract infection in the Northwest region of England and represents the most well characterised ST131 strain. Sequencing was carried out using the Pacific Biosciences platform, which provided sufficient depth and read-length to produce a complete genome without the need for other technologies. The discovery of spurious contigs within the assembly that correspond to site-specific …

The Genetics And Physiology Of Abiotic Stress Disorder In Swede (Brassica Napus Var. Napobrassica), Faiz Fadhel Jan 2014

The Genetics And Physiology Of Abiotic Stress Disorder In Swede (Brassica Napus Var. Napobrassica), Faiz Fadhel

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Swedes are extremely common as a root vegetable in Europe, USA, and Canada but are affected by the occasional presence of Brown Heart (BH) disorder affecting the marketable swede root. The incidence of BH has been reported worldwide however it is very difficult to breed resistance due to its sporadic occurrence with no external symptoms to select for. BH has been attributed to boron availability but attempts to link BH appearance definitively with boron deficiency have been difficult. Anecdotal evidence from breeders and growers highlighted the recent co-appearance of BH and frost injury in the field and it was postulated …

Implicit Meaning In 18-Month-Old Toddlers., Luche C Delle, Samantha Durrant, Caroline Floccia, Kim Plunkett

School of Psychology

A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that infants understand the meaning of spoken words from as early as 6 months. Yet little is known about their ability to do so in the absence of any visual referent, which would offer diagnostic evidence for an adult-like, symbolic interpretation of words and their use in language mediated thought. We used the head-turn preference procedure to examine whether infants can generate implicit meanings from word forms alone as early as 18 months of age, and whether they are sensitive to meaningful relationships between words. In one condition, toddlers were presented with lists of …

Coastal Defence Through Wave Farms, J. Abanades, D. Greaves, G. Iglesias Jan 2014

Coastal Defence Through Wave Farms, J. Abanades, D. Greaves, G. Iglesias

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The possibility of using wave farms for coastal defence warrants investigation because wave energy is poised to become a major renewable in many countries over the next decades. The fundamental question in this regard is whether a wave farm can be used to reduce beach erosion under storm conditions. If the answer to this question is positive, then a wave farm can have coastal defence as a subsidiary function, in addition to its primary role of producing carbon-free energy. The objective of this work is to address this question by comparing the response of a beach in the face of …

A Multi-Proxy Study Of The Palaeocene - Eocene Thermal Maximum In Northern Spain, Hayley Manners Jan 2014

A Multi-Proxy Study Of The Palaeocene - Eocene Thermal Maximum In Northern Spain, Hayley Manners

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

At the boundary between the Paleocene and Eocene epochs (ca. 56 Ma) a significant global warming event, termed the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), occurred. Records of this event are characterised by a negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) which has been associated with the release of thousands of petagrams of isotopically light carbon into the ocean-atmosphere system, initiating changes in the carbon cycle, the climate system, ocean chemistry and the marine and continental ecosystems. The amount of isotopically light carbon that was required to cause the event, its source and the rapidity of its release are, however, are still debated. This …

Exploring The Potential Of Cassava For Agricultural Growth And Economic Development In Nigeria, Brodrick Awerije Jan 2014

Exploring The Potential Of Cassava For Agricultural Growth And Economic Development In Nigeria, Brodrick Awerije

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The decline in agricultural productivity in Nigeria is linked to a host of factors ranging from unsustainable growth policies, inadequate funding and infrastructures, low levels of value added through processing, low commodity prices, unstable markets, poor extension services and low rates of literacy. It is now well recognised that there is a need to diversify Nigerian agriculture as well as improving production performances. This study investigates the potential of cassava root tuber (CRT), as a means to promote agricultural growth. It assesses cassava production, profitability, efficiency, marketing structures and channels, constraints in production, the potential to add value by processing …

Effectiveness Of A Closed System Device In Reducing Occupational Exposure And Environmental Concentrations Of Anticancer Drugs, Nitin Vyas Jan 2014

Effectiveness Of A Closed System Device In Reducing Occupational Exposure And Environmental Concentrations Of Anticancer Drugs, Nitin Vyas

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Owing to their non-selective nature, anti-cancer drugs affect both cancerous and non-cancerous cells and present a major health risk to healthcare staff working with them. This project was conducted at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, to investigate the extent of contamination with anti-cancer drugs on work surfaces and the environmental emissions of these drugs. In the Isolator study, surface contamination arising from the preparation of five anticancer drug infusions (epirubicin, fluorouracil, cisplatin, oxaliplatin and carboplatin) in a pharmaceutical isolator and external surfaces of infusion bags and syringes using a conventional syringe and needle technique was investigated and compared with that obtained using …

Comparative Studies To Assess Bacterial Communities On The Clover Phylloplane Using Mlst, Dgge And T-Rflp, A Prabhakar, Ah Bishop Jan 2014

Comparative Studies To Assess Bacterial Communities On The Clover Phylloplane Using Mlst, Dgge And T-Rflp, A Prabhakar, Ah Bishop

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) were used to characterise the changes that occurred in Bacillus cereus group strains present in the phylloplane of clover Trifolium hybridum over 4 months. These strains had previously been analysed by multiple locus sequence typing (MLST). DGGE displayed many equally intense bands which indicated many equally abundant ribotypes. The bacterial community composition was variable and the leaves sampled as little as a week apart were found to have some temporal variability, indicating that diverse phylloplane bacterial communities follow sequential patterns from time to time. The B. cereus group …

A Novel Real-Time Non-Linear Wavelet-Based Model Predictive Controller For A Coupled Tank System, Kayode Owa, Sanjay Sharma, Robert Sutton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This article presents the design, simulation and real-time implementation of a constrained non-linear model predictive controller for a coupled tank system. A novel wavelet-based function neural network model and a genetic algorithm online non-linear real-time optimisation approach were used in the non-linear model predictive controller strategy. A coupled tank system, which resembles operations in many chemical processes, is complex and has inherent non-linearity, and hence, controlling such system is a challenging task. Particularly important is low-level control where often instability and oscillatory responses are observed. This article designs a wavelet neural network with high predicting precision and time–frequency localisation characteristics …

Overfishing And The Replacement Of Demersal Finfish By Shellfish: An Example From The English Channel., Carlotta Molfese, Doug Beare, Jason M. Hall-Spencer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The worldwide depletion of major fish stocks through intensive industrial fishing is thought to have profoundly altered the trophic structure of marine ecosystems. Here we assess changes in the trophic structure of the English Channel marine ecosystem using a 90-year time-series (1920-2010) of commercial fishery landings. Our analysis was based on estimates of the mean trophic level (mTL) of annual landings and the Fishing-in-Balance index (FiB). Food webs of the Channel ecosystem have been altered, as shown by a significant decline in the mTL of fishery landings whilst increases in the FiB index suggest increased fishing effort and fishery expansion. …

Going Native? Flower Use By Bumblebees In English Urban Gardens., Mick E. Hanley, Amanda J. Awbi, Miguel Franco

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although urban gardens provide opportunities for pollinators in an otherwise inhospitable environment, most garden plants are not native to the recipient biogeographical region and their value to local pollinators is disputed. This study tested the hypothesis that bumblebees foraging in English urban gardens preferentially visited sympatric Palaearctic-range plants over species originating outside their native range. METHODS: Twenty-seven surveys of flower availability and bumblebee visitation (Bombus spp.) were conducted over a 3-month summer period. Plants were categorized according to whether they were native British, Palaearctic or non-Palaearctic in origin. A phylogeny of the 119 plant species recorded was …

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a soil-dwelling bacterium and the causative agent of melioidosis. Isolation of B. pseudomallei from clinical samples is the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of melioidosis; results can take 3-7 days to produce. Alternatively, antibody-based tests have low specificity due to a high percentage of seropositive individuals in endemic areas. There is a clear need to develop a rapid point-of-care antigen detection assay for the diagnosis of melioidosis. Previously, we employed In vivo Microbial Antigen Discovery (InMAD) to identify potential B. pseudomallei diagnostic biomarkers. The B. pseudomallei capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and numerous protein antigens were identified as potential …

The Impact Of Changing Surface Ocean Conditions On The Dissolution Of Aerosol Iron, Matthew P. Fishwick, Peter N. Sedwick, Maeve C. Lohan, Paul J. Worsfold, Kristen N. Buck, Thomas M. Church, Simon J. Ussher

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The proportion of aerosol iron (Fe) that dissolves in seawater varies greatly and is dependent on aerosol composition and the physicochemical conditions of seawater, which may change depending on location or be altered by global environmental change. Aerosol and surface seawater samples were collected in the Sargasso Sea and used to investigate the impact of these changing conditions on aerosol Fe dissolution in seawater. Our data show that seawater temperature, pH, and oxygen concentration, within the range of current and projected future values, had no significant effect on the dissolution of aerosol Fe. However, the source and composition of aerosols …
