From Liminoid To Limivoid: Understanding Contemporary Bungee Jumping From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Bjørn Thomassen, Maja Balle May 2018

From Liminoid To Limivoid: Understanding Contemporary Bungee Jumping From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Bjørn Thomassen, Maja Balle

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This article is about bungee jumping and how it reflects the world in which we live. During the 1980s bungee jumping became one of the most popular ways of seeking a ‘real experience’, when the practice was commercialised and introduced as a leisure activity all around the world. This happened in the same period as outdoor sport activities or ‘outdoor recreation’ exploded in kinds and numbers, clearly linked to the ‘experiential turn in tourism’ and the proliferation of ‘adventure tourism’. A key feature of these activities is the experience of danger: going to the limits, or indeed, standing on the …

Measurement Of Proton Leak In Isolated Mitochondria., Charles Affourtit, Hoi Shan Wong, Martin D. Brand May 2018

Measurement Of Proton Leak In Isolated Mitochondria., Charles Affourtit, Hoi Shan Wong, Martin D. Brand

School of Biomedical Sciences

Oxidative phosphorylation is an important energy-conserving mechanism coupling mitochondrial electron transfer to ATP synthesis. Coupling between respiration and phosphorylation is not fully efficient due to proton leaks. In this chapter, we present a method to measure proton leak activity in isolated mitochondria. The relative strength of a modular kinetic approach to probe oxidative phosphorylation is emphasized.

”I Thought You Were One Of Those Modern Girls From Mumbai”: Gender, Reflexivity, And Encounters Of Indian-Ness In The Field, Pamila Gupta

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This paper is a reflection on my experiences of doing fieldwork in Goa, India (1999-2000) from my position as a „halfie‟ anthropologist, born in India, and raised and educated in the United States. I discuss three „significant fieldwork events‟ that shaped how I was perceived by „others‟(locals and tourists) in the field in order to both illuminate and complicate the gendered, racialized, and diasporic postcolonial politics of conducting anthropological research on the topics of tourism and religion. Further, I pose these encounters as dilemmas, not to be resolved but rather to be explored as impacting and complicating the fieldwork process …

Sorption Of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients In Untreated Wastewater Effluent And Effect Of Dilution In Freshwater: Implications For An “Impact Zone” Environmental Risk Assessment Approach, Simone Bagnis, Mark Fitzsimons, Jason Snape, Alan Tappin, Sean Comber May 2018

Sorption Of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients In Untreated Wastewater Effluent And Effect Of Dilution In Freshwater: Implications For An “Impact Zone” Environmental Risk Assessment Approach, Simone Bagnis, Mark Fitzsimons, Jason Snape, Alan Tappin, Sean Comber

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Evidence of ecotoxicological effects of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (APIs) has increased research into their environmental fate. In low and low-middle income countries (LLMICs) the main source of APIs to surface waters is from discharge of untreated wastewater. Consequently, concentrations of APIs can be relatively high in the “impact zone” downstream of a discharge point. Little is known about the fate of APIs in these impact zones. In this laboratory scale investigation, the effect of successive dilution of synthetic untreated wastewater (dilution factor 1 to 10) on the distribution of APIs was studied. The sorption was consistent …

Lethal Trap Created By Adaptive Evolutionary Response To An Exotic Resource, Mc Singer, C Parmesan May 2018

Lethal Trap Created By Adaptive Evolutionary Response To An Exotic Resource, Mc Singer, C Parmesan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Global transport of organisms by humans provides novel resources to wild species, which often respond maladaptively. Native herbivorous insects have been killed feeding on toxic exotic plants, which acted as ‘ecological traps’1,2,3,4. We document a novel ‘eco-evolutionary trap’ stemming from the opposite effect; that is, high fitness on an exotic resource despite lack of adaptation to it. Plantago lanceolata was introduced to western North America by cattle-ranching. Feeding on this exotic plant released a large, isolated population of the native butterfly Euphydryas editha from a longstanding trade-off between maternal fecundity and offspring mortality. Because of this release—and despite a reduced …

Similar But Separate Systems Underlie Perceptual Bistability In Vision And Audition, Sl Denham, D Farkas, R Van Ee, M Taranu, Et Al May 2018

Similar But Separate Systems Underlie Perceptual Bistability In Vision And Audition, Sl Denham, D Farkas, R Van Ee, M Taranu, Et Al

School of Psychology

The dynamics of perceptual bistability, the phenomenon in which perception switches between different interpretations of an unchanging stimulus, are characterised by very similar properties across a wide range of qualitatively different paradigms. This suggests that perceptual switching may be triggered by some common source. However, it is also possible that perceptual switching may arise from a distributed system, whose components vary according to the specifics of the perceptual experiences involved. Here we used a visual and an auditory task to determine whether individuals show cross-modal commonalities in perceptual switching. We found that individual perceptual switching rates were significantly correlated across …

Development Of A Chemical Source Apportionment Decision Support Framework For Lake Catchment Management, Sean D.W. Comber, Russell Smith, Peter Daldorph, Michael J. Gardner, Carlos Constantino, Brian Ellor

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. Increasing pressures on natural resources has led to the adoption of water quality standards to protect ecological and human health. Lakes and reservoirs are particularly vulnerable to pressure on water quality owing to long residence times compared with rivers. This has raised the question of how to determine and to quantify the sources of priority chemicals (e.g. nutrients, persistent organic pollutants and metals) so that suitable measures can be taken to address failures to comply with regulatory standards. Contaminants enter lakes waters from a range of diffuse and point sources. Decision support tools and models are …

Micro, Meso, And Macro Data Collection And Analysis, As A Method For Speculative And Artistic Exploration, S Didakis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In this work, an attempt is made to explore the emerging computationally-enhanced private and public environments by analyzing their ecological transitions and its implications on practical, aesthetic, and speculative dimensions. The author has decided to methodologically dissect the multiplicity of information that exists on many possible-to-detect scales (micro, meso, macro), and utilize this extraction as a tool for experimentation and redefinition. With the use of custom-made hardware and software utilities (sensor devices, sentiment analysis algorithms, online APIs, and many more), a vast amount of data is collected and used as a multidimensional layered architecture that constantly shifts and transforms. The …

Coryphaena Hippurus: A Potential Predator Of Lagocephalus Sceleratus In The Mediterranean Sea, P Kleitou, S Kalogirou, D Marmara, I Giovos May 2018

Coryphaena Hippurus: A Potential Predator Of Lagocephalus Sceleratus In The Mediterranean Sea, P Kleitou, S Kalogirou, D Marmara, I Giovos

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Lagocephalus sceleratus is considered as one of the most invasive Lessepsian immigrants introduced in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a highly toxic fish, considered as a pest for fisheries, the environment and the economy. Hitherto, its invasion has been favoured by the lack of natural predators and its noncommercial value. The present study reports the first published incidence of a juvenile L. sceleratus predation in the Mediterranean by an adult Coryphaena hippurus. This constitute a significant finding which can potentially guide future management efforts of L. sceleratus control in the basin; however, further research should be conducted to elucidate whether …

Glycerol Positive Promoters For Tailored Metabolic Engineering Of The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae., Ping Wei Ho, Mathias Klein, Matthias Futschik, Elke Nevoigt

School of Biomedical Sciences

Glycerol offers several advantages as a substrate for biotechnological applications. An important step towards using the popular production host Saccharomyces cerevisiae for glycerol-based bioprocesses have been recent studies in which commonly used S. cerevisiae strains were engineered to grow in synthetic medium containing glycerol as the sole carbon source. For metabolic engineering projects of S. cerevisiae growing on glycerol, characterized promoters are missing. In the current study, we used transcriptome analysis and a yECitrine-based fluorescence reporter assay to select and characterize 25 useful promoters. The promoters of the genes ALD4 and ADH2 showed 4.2- and 3-fold higher activities compared to …

On The Enigma Of Glutathione-Dependent Styrene Degradation In Gordonia Rubripertincta Cwb2, T Heine, J Zimmerling, A Ballmann, Sb Kleeberg, Et Al May 2018

On The Enigma Of Glutathione-Dependent Styrene Degradation In Gordonia Rubripertincta Cwb2, T Heine, J Zimmerling, A Ballmann, Sb Kleeberg, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Among bacteria, only a single styrene-specific degradation pathway has been reported so far. It comprises the activity of styrene monooxygenase, styrene oxide isomerase, and phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase, yielding phenylacetic acid as the central metabolite. The alternative route comprises ring-hydroxylating enzymes and yields vinyl catechol as central metabolite, which undergoes meta-cleavage. This was reported to be unspecific and also allows the degradation of benzene derivatives. However, some bacteria had been described to degrade styrene but do not employ one of those routes or only parts of them. Here, we describe a novel “hybrid” degradation pathway for styrene located on a plasmid of …

Different Dose-Dependent Modes Of Action Of C-Type Natriuretic Peptide On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Formation., F Desriac, T Clamens, T Rosay, S Rodrigues, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

We have previously shown that the C-type Natriuretic Peptide (CNP), a peptide produced by lungs, is able to impact Pseudomonasaeruginosa physiology. In the present work, the effect of CNP at different concentrations on P. aeruginosa biofilm formation was studied and the mechanisms of action of this human hormone on P. aeruginosa were deciphered. CNP was shown to inhibit dynamic biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner without affecting the bacterial growth at any tested concentrations. The most effective concentrations were 1 and 0.1 µM. At 0.1 µM, the biofilm formation inhibition was fully dependent on the CNP sensor protein AmiC, whereas …

Prior Knowledge In Mathematics And Study Success In Engineering: Informational Value Of Learner Data Collected From A Web-Based Pre-Course, K Derr, R Hübl, Mz Ahmed

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The article describes the development and evaluation of a web-based pre-course in mathematics, delivered to four cohorts of engineering students at a German university. Based on demographic, personal, and learning-related data relationships between students’ preconditions, their learning gains in the pre-course, and study success in the degree programme were analysed. The results support the existing literature in that domain-related prior knowledge and secondary school achievement play a dominant role regarding study success in engineering. The analyses also showed that the influence of cognitive predictors could only be compensated for by a strong learner engagement. At-risk students with high pre-course learning …

A Comparison Of Ground-Based Methods For Estimating Canopy Closure For Use In Phenology Research, Am Smith, Pm Ramsay Apr 2018

A Comparison Of Ground-Based Methods For Estimating Canopy Closure For Use In Phenology Research, Am Smith, Pm Ramsay

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract Climate change is influencing tree phenology, causing earlier and more prolonged canopy closure in temperate forests. Canopy closure is closely associated with understorey light, so shifts in its timing have wide-reaching consequences for ecological processes in the understorey. Widespread monitoring of forest canopies through time is needed to understand changes in light availability during spring in particular. Canopy openness, derived from hemispherical photography, has frequently been used as a proxy for understorey light. However, hemispherical photography is relatively resource intensive, so we tested a range of inexpensive alternatives for monitoring variability in canopy closure (visual estimation, canopy scope, smartphone …

Nanomaterials In The Environment: Behavior, Fate, Bioavailability, And Effects-An Updated Review., Jr Lead, Ge Batley, Pjj Alvarez, M-N Croteau, Rd Handy, Mj Mclaughlin, Jd Judy, K Schirmer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

This review covers developments in studies of nanomaterials (NMs) in the environment, since the much-cited review of Klaine et al. (2008). It discusses novel insights on fate and behavior, metrology, transformations, bioavailability, toxicity mechanisms and environmental impacts, with a focus on terrestrial and aquatic systems. Overall the findings were that: i) despite the substantial developments, there remain critical gaps, in large part due to the lack of analytical, modelling and field capabilities and in part due to the breadth and complexity of the area; ii) a key knowledge gap is the lack of data on environmental concentrations and dosimetry generally; …
