Using Mixed Reality Displays For Observational Learning Of Motor Skills: A Design Research Approach Enhancing Memory Recall And Usability, Pwl Watson, D Livingstone
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
When learning an action sequence, observing a demonstration informs the knowledge of movement execution and enhances the efficiency of motor skill acquisition. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual learning environments offer more opportunities for motor skill training as they afford observational learning. Mixed reality platforms (virtual reality, desktop PC, etc.) that render 3D virtual environments can therefore increase accessibility of observational content. To explore the effectiveness of these platforms so as to facilitate observational learning of action sequences, we developed the Recovery Position Application [1] (RPA) at the Interactive System Studio, University of Plymouth. The RPA was originally designed for mobile virtual reality. …

Ambergris, which is a coprolith originating from the sperm whale, has been found only rarely, but for centuries, as jetsam on beaches all over the world. There are no reliable data indicating how long such samples may have remained at sea, with unsubstantiated accounts suggesting maybe decades. Here, we obtained over forty jetsam samples, many collected on known dates, from mostly known beach locations across the globe. Such an inventory of verified jetsam ambergris is unprecedented. Each sample was characterised by analytical methods such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We then determined the radiocarbon ages of some of the samples …

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a comparatively rare non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma characterised by overexpression of cyclin D1.Many patients present with or progress to advanced stage disease within 3 years. MCL is considered an incurable disease withmedian survival between 3 and 4 years. We have investigated the role(s) of CCN1 (CYR61) and cell cycle regulators inprogressive MCL. We have used the human MCL cell lines REC1 < G519 < JVM2 as a model for disease aggression. Themagnitude of CCN1 expression in human MCL cells is REC1 > G519 > JVM2 cells by RQ-PCR, depicting a decrease in CCN1expression with disease progression. Investigation of CCN1 isoform expression by western blotting showed that whilst expres-sion of full-length CCN1 was barely altered in the cell lines, expression …

Biofilm-sediment aggregate (BSA) contains a high water content, either within internal pores and channels or bound by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) forming a highly hydrated biofilm matrix. Desiccation of BSAs alters the biofilm morphology and thus the physical characteristics of porous media, such as the binding matrix within BSA and internal pore geometry. Observing BSAs in their naturally hydrated form is essential but hampered due to the lack of techniques for imaging and discerning hydrated materials. Generally, imagery techniques (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and focused ion beam nanotomography (FIB-nt)) involve the desiccation of BSAs (freeze-drying or …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Introduction. For plants, sunlight not only provides a source of energy to drive primary production, but also information to guide photo-morphogenesis and reproduction (Kendrick and Kronenberg 1994). Also light in the 400-700 nm waveband range (photosynthetic active radiation, PAR) solar radiation reaching the earth’s surface contains a small fraction of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-320 nm), which is harmful to plants. UV-B quanta have high levels of energy and are effectively absorbed by important biological molecules, such as DNA, proteins, and lipids, which subsequently get destroyed. UV-B radiation directly alters the structure of DNA and indirectly damages nucleic acids (Mitchell and …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Pseudo-Nitzschia Genetic Diversity In The North Pacific Ocean From The Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey, R Stern, Sk Moore, Vl Trainer, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Several species of the marine diatom Pseudo-nitzschia can produce the neurotoxin domoic acid that is responsible for the seafood-borne illness amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans, marine wildlife mortalities and prolonged closures of fisheries resulting in economic losses to coastal communities. Since the year 2000, Pseudo-nitzschia species have been monitored in the Pacific Ocean with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). We used a combination of scanning electron microscopy with high-throughput and Sanger sequencing of CPR survey samples to compare the diversity of phytoplankton, including Pseudo-nitzschia species, from the north-eastern Pacific Ocean over 3 climatically different years: 2002, 2005 and 2008. Lowering of the estuarine Environmental Quality Standard for zinc in the UK to 121 nM reflects rising concern regarding zinc in ecosystems and is driving the need to better understand its fate and behavior and to develop and parametrize speciation models to predict the metal species present. For the first time, an extensive data set has been gathered for the speciation of zinc within an estuarine system with supporting physicochemical characterization, in particular dissolved organic carbon. WHAM/Model VII and Visual MINTEQ speciation models were used to simulate zinc speciation, using a combination of measured complexation variables and available defaults. Data …

This paper presents theoretical and practical research related to computationally-enhanced environments, analysing speculative explorations of media technologies that extend our understanding on alternative modes of architectural realities. An analysis is made concerning this transformation of interior spaces that realise immaterial dimensions and hidden layers of information, demonstrating strategies for computationally-enhanced ecologies that become an essential organism of the functions and aesthetics of space. The case studies presented in this work attempt to focus on how technological development and cutting-edge media practices are utilized to create objects and systems within the physical space for augmenting and amplifying creative processes, and exploring …

Modeling Surface Tension Of A Two-Dimensional Droplet Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, Nowoghomwenma Noel Ehigiamusoe, Samat Maxutov, Yeaw Chu Lee
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Surface tension plays a significant role at the dynamic interface of free-surface flows especially at the microscale in capillary-dominated flows. A model for accurately predicting the formation of two-dimensional viscous droplets in vacuum or gas of negligible density and viscosity resulting from axisymmetric oscillation due to surface tension is solved using smoothed particle hydrodynamics composed of the Navier-Stokes system and appropriate interfacial conditions for the free-surface boundaries. The evolution of the droplet and its free-surface interface is tracked over time to investigate the effects of surface tension forces implemented using a modified continuous surface force method and is compared with …

Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have become …

The assessment of individual traits requires that tests are reliable (i.e. consistency over time) and externally valid, meaning that they predict future responses in similar contexts (i.e. convergent validity) but do not predict responses to unrelated situations (i.e. discriminant validity). The aim of this study was to determine if dairy calf personality traits (Fearfulness, Sociability and Pessimism), derived from behaviours expressed in standardized tests, predict individuals’ responses in related situations. The first experiment tested if the trait ‘Sociability’ was related to the expression of social behaviour in the home-pen, with calves assigned individual proximity scores (based on proximity to other …

© 2018, The Author(s). The study investigates the in-situ strength of sediments across a plate boundary décollement using drilling parameters recorded when a 1180-m-deep borehole was established during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 370, Temperature-Limit of the Deep Biosphere off Muroto (T-Limit). Information of the in-situ strength of the shallow portion in/around a plate boundary fault zone is critical for understanding the development of accretionary prisms and of the décollement itself. Studies using seismic reflection surveys and scientific ocean drillings have recently revealed the existence of high pore pressure zones around frontal accretionary prisms, which may reduce the effective …

Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model is used for the analysis of larval dispersal over Anton Dohrn Seamount (ADS), North Atlantic. The model output validated against the in situ data collected during the 136th cruise of the RRS ‘James Cook’ in May–June 2016 allowed reconstruction of the details of the baroclinic tidal dynamics over ADS. The obtained velocities were used as input data for a Lagrangian-type passive particle tracking model to reproduce the larval dispersal of generic deep-sea water invertebrate species. It was found that the residual tidal flow over ADS has a form of a pair of dipoles …

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The development of various combinative methods for Arctic sea ice reconstruction using the sympagic highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) IP25in conjunction with pelagic biomarkers has often facilitated more detailed descriptions of sea ice conditions than using IP25alone. Here, we investigated the application of the Phytoplankton-IP25index (PIP25) and a recently proposed Classification Tree (CT) model for describing temporal shifts in sea ice conditions to assess the consistency of both methods. Based on biomarker data from three downcore records from the Barents Sea spanning millennial timescales, we showcase apparent and potential limitations in both approaches, and provide recommendations for …

AbstractIt is reasonable to assume that microbes played an important role in determining the eventual fate of oil spilled during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, given that microbial activities in the Gulf of Mexico are significant and diverse. However, critical gaps exist in our knowledge of how microbes influence the biodegradation and accumulation of petroleum in the water column and in marine sediments of the deep ocean and the shelf. Ultimately, this limited understanding impedes the ability to forecast the fate of future oil spills, specifically the capacity of numerical models to simulate the transport and fate of petroleum under …

Tremendous progress in treatment and outcomes has been achieved across the whole range of haematological malignancies in the past two decades. Although cure rates for aggressive malignancies have increased, nowhere has progress been more impactful than in the management of typically incurable forms of haematological cancer. Population-based data have shown that 5-year survival for patients with chronic myelogenous and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, indolent B-cell lymphomas, and multiple myeloma has improved markedly. This improvement is a result of substantial changes in disease management strategies in these malignancies. Several haematological malignancies are now chronic diseases that are treated with continuously administered therapies …
