Xbeach-G Model Simulation Of 2.5-M Sea-Level Rise On Sand And Gravel Coral Reef Island (Masselink Et Al., Jgr(Es), 2021), Gerd Masselink Dec 2020

Xbeach-G Model Simulation Of 2.5-M Sea-Level Rise On Sand And Gravel Coral Reef Island (Masselink Et Al., Jgr(Es), 2021), Gerd Masselink

Faculty of Science and Engineering Datasets

Coral reef islands are particularly exposed to the impacts of sea-level rise. They are usually fronted by ‘living’coral reef platforms that protect the island shoreline from energetic wave action. Healthy reef platforms grow vertically and can keep up with rising sea level, maintaining a constant water depth in front of the island. It is therefore suggested that future reef growth may be a critical factor in reducing the vulnerability of coral reef islands to sea-level rise. We use a computer model to simulate the response of coral reef islands to sea-level rise with and without future reef growth. We find …

Nature Of The Evidence Base And Frameworks Underpinning Dietary Recommendations For Prevention Of Non-Communicable Diseases: A Position Paper From The Academy Of Nutrition Sciences, Christine M. Williams, Margaret Ashwell, Ann Prentice, Mary Hickson, Sara Stanner

School of Health Professions

Abstract This Position Paper from the Academy of Nutrition Sciences is the first in a series which describe the nature of the scientific evidence and frameworks that underpin nutrition recommendations for health. This first paper focuses on evidence which underpins dietary recommendations for prevention of non-communicable diseases. It considers methodological advances made in nutritional epidemiology and frameworks used by expert groups to support objective, rigorous and transparent translation of the evidence into dietary recommendations. The flexibility of these processes allows updating of recommendations as new evidence becomes available. For CVD and some cancers, the paper has highlighted the long-term consistency …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Extractive activities in the ocean are expanding into the vast, poorly studied deep sea, with the consequence that environmental management decisions must be made for data-poor seafloor regions. Habitat classification can support marine spatial planning and inform decision-making processes in such areas. We present a regional, top–down, broad-scale, seafloor-habitat classification for the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), an area targeted for future polymetallic nodule mining in abyssal waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Our classification uses non-hierarchical, k-medoids clustering to combine environmental correlates of faunal distributions in the region. The classification uses topographic variables, particulate organic carbon flux to the seafloor, …

Volcanic Co2 Seep Geochemistry And Use In Understanding Ocean Acidification, A. Aiuppa, J. M. Hall-Spencer, M. Milazzo, G. Turco, S. Caliro, Napoli R Di

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractOcean acidification is one of the most dramatic effects of the massive atmospheric release of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution, although its effects on marine ecosystems are not well understood. Submarine volcanic hydrothermal fields have geochemical conditions that provide opportunities to characterise the effects of elevated levels of seawater CO2 on marine life in the field. Here, we review the geochemical aspects of shallow marine CO2-rich seeps worldwide, focusing on both gas composition and water chemistry. We then describe the geochemical effects of volcanic CO2 seepage on the overlying seawater column. We also present …

Monomer Selection For In Situ Polymerization Infusion Manufacture Of Natural-Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic-Matrix Marine Composites, Yang Qin, John Summerscales, Jasper Graham-Jones, Maozhou Meng, Richard Pemberton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Awareness of environmental issues has led to increasing interest from composite researchers in using “greener” materials to replace synthetic fiber reinforcements and petrochemical polymer matrices. Natural fiber bio-based thermoplastic composites could be an appropriate choice with advantages including reducing environmental impacts, using renewable resources and being recyclable. The choice of polymer matrix will significantly affect the cost, manufacturing process, mechanical properties and durability of the composite system. The criteria for appropriate monomers are based on the processing temperature and viscosity, polymer mechanical properties, recyclability, etc. This review considers the selection of thermoplastic monomers suitable for in situ polymerization during resin, …

Microorganisms in marine subsurface sediments substantially contribute to global biomass. Sediments warmer than 40°C account for roughly half the marine sediment volume, but the processes mediated by microbial populations in these hard-to-access environments are poorly understood. We investigated microbial life in up to 1.2-kilometer-deep and up to 120°C hot sediments in the Nankai Trough subduction zone. Above 45°C, concentrations of vegetative cells drop two orders of magnitude and endospores become more than 6000 times more abundant than vegetative cells. Methane is biologically produced and oxidized until sediments reach 80° to 85°C. In 100° to 120°C sediments, isotopic evidence and increased …

AbstractAvailable analytical methods cannot detect nanoplastics at environmentally realistic concentrations in complex matrices such as biological tissues. Here, we describe a one-step polymerization method, allowing direct radiolabeling of a sulfonate end-capped nano-sized polystyrene (nPS; proposed as a model nanoplastic particle representing negatively charged nanoplastics). The method, which produces nanoplastics trackable in simulated environmental settings which have already been used to investigate the behavior of a nanoplastic in vivo in a bivalve mollusc, was developed, optimized and successfully applied to synthesis of 14C-labeled nPS of different sizes. In addition to a description of the method of synthesis, we describe the details …

Implications Of Taxon-Level Variation In Climate Change Response For Interpreting Plankton Lifeform Biodiversity Indicators, Jacob Bedford, David G. Johns, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract Indicators based on broad functional characteristics, which group plankton taxa into “lifeforms”, summarize changes across a high number of taxa in a way that reflects changes in community functioning and are used to inform policy assessments. Key questions remain, however, as to what extent plankton taxa within these lifeforms share responses to environmental change. Addressing this knowledge gap can provide additional information on the influence of environmental drivers, including climate change, on plankton communities. Here, we use a multi-decadal plankton time series to examine the extent to which taxa within lifeforms share responses to sea surface temperature (SST) change. …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This study assesses the spatial and temporal characteristics of nighttime surface urban heat island (SUHI) effects over Greater Cairo: the largest metropolitan area in Africa. This study employed nighttime land surface temperature (LST) data at 1 km resolution from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua sensor for the period 2003–2019. We presented a new spatial anomaly algorithm, which allowed to define SUHI using the most anomalous hotspot and cold spot of LST for each time step over Greater Cairo between 2003 and 2019. Results demonstrate that although there is a significant increase in the spatial extent of SUHI over …

Behavioural Immune System Responses To Coronavirus: A Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Explanation Of Conformity, Warmth Towards Others And Attitudes Towards Lockdown, Alison M. Bacon, Philip J. Corr

School of Psychology

Behavioural immune system (BIS) describes psychological mechanisms that detect cues to infectious pathogens in the immediate environment, trigger disease-relevant responses and facilitate behavioural avoidance/escape. BIS activation elicits a perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) which can result in conformity with social norms. However, a response to superficial cues can result in aversive responses to people that pose no actual threat, leading to an aversion to unfamiliar others, and likelihood of prejudice. Pathogen-neutralizing behaviours, therefore, have implications for social interaction as well as illness behaviours and responses to health communications. In this study, we investigate how PVD influences conformity, attitudes to other …

The ocean plays a crucial role in the functioning of the Earth System and in the provision of vital goods and services. The United Nations (UN) declared 2021–2030 as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Roadmap for the Ocean Decade aims to achieve six critical societal outcomes (SOs) by 2030, through the pursuit of four objectives (Os). It specifically recognizes the scarcity of biological data for deep-sea biomes, and challenges the global scientific community to conduct research to advance understanding of deep-sea ecosystems to inform sustainable management. In this paper, we map four key scientific questions …

Marine ecosystems are undergoing major transformations due to the establishment and spread of Non-Indigenous Species (NIS). Some of these organisms have adverse effects, for example by reducing biodiversity and causing ecosystem shifts. Others have upsides, such as benefits to fisheries or replacing lost ecological functions and strengthening biogenic complexity. Stopping the spread of NIS is virtually impossible and so the societal challenge is how to limit the socioeconomic, health, and ecological risks, and sustainably exploit the benefits provided by these organisms. We propose a move away from the notion that NIS have only negative effects, and suggest a turn towards …

Meningioma are the most frequent primary intracranial tumour. Management of aggressive meningioma is complex, and development of effective biomarkers or pharmacological interventions is hampered by an incomplete knowledge of molecular landscape. Here, we present an integrated analysis of two complementary omics studies to investigate alterations in the “transcriptome–proteome” profile of high-grade (III) compared to low-grade (I) meningiomas. We identified 3598 common transcripts/proteins and revealed concordant up- and downregulation in grade III vs. grade I meningiomas. Concordantly upregulated genes included FABP7, a fatty acid binding protein and the monoamine oxidase MAOB, the latter of which we validated at the protein level …

Spatially Clustered Resources Increase Male Aggregation And Mating Duration In Drosophila Melanogaster, Er Churchill, Jr Bridle, Mdf Thom

In environments where females mate multiply, males should adjust their behaviour and physiology in response to the perceived level of sperm competition to maximize their fitness. Evidence of such plasticity has been found in several laboratory and field studies, but little is known about the cues stimulating these responses in natural populations. One way in which males appear to assess sperm competition risk is through encounter rates with conspecific males. Such encounter rates may be driven by the spatial distribution of resources required by males (i.e. food patches or potential mates), which in turn affects local density. However, explicit links …

Molybdenum Induces Growth, Yield, And Defence System Mechanisms Of The Mung Bean (Vigna Radiata L.) Under Water Stress Conditions, Nahlaa Jamal Hussain Hayyawi, Mohammed H. Al-Issawi, Abdullah A. Alrajhi, Hanady Al-Shmgani, Hail Rihan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Water stress has a negative impact on the yield and growth of crops worldwide and consequently has a global impact on food security. Many biochemical changes occur in plants as a response to water stress, such as activation of antioxidant systems. Molybdenum (Mo) plays an important part in activating the expression of many enzymes, such as CAT, POD, and SOD, as well as increasing the proline content. Mo therefore supports the defence system in plants and plays an important role in the defence system of mung bean plants growing under water stress conditions. Four concentrations of Mo (0, 15, 30, …
