Actor-Network Theory, Tourism Organizations And The Development Of Sustainable Community Livelihoods, Mohamed Ahmed
Actor-Network Theory, Tourism Organizations And The Development Of Sustainable Community Livelihoods, Mohamed Ahmed
Plymouth Business School Theses
Research on existing actor-networks has focused traditionally on outcomes, achievements and success at the expense of a detailed consideration of their formation and ability to function. In recognition of this lacuna, this study examined the formation and functioning of tourism-related actor-networks involved in environmental protection and the management of tourism in the coastal city of Hurghada, Egypt. More specifically, it applied the actor-network theory (ANT). In particular, the study applied its four moments of translation – problematization, interessement, enrolment and mobilization – and used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to analyse the influencing factors, whether positively or negatively, and the degree …

A Critical Evaluation Of Community Rail Policy And Practice During The New Labour Years 2003 - 2010, Andrew Seedhouse
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Seedhouse, Andrew Colin A Critical Evaluation Of Community Rail Policy And Practice During The New Labour Years 2003 - 2010 This thesis examines how the changing governance environments introduced under New Labour compromised or assisted the delivery of the 2004 Community Rail Development Strategy. It considers the origins of Community Rail and the circumstances which led to the adoption of the 2004 Strategy and its content. It explores the wider processes of governance change across multiple scales and the rise of a new neoliberal approach favoured by recent administrations, with particular emphasis of New Labour’s introduction of the Third Way …

Sustainable Housing Strategies For The Growing Indian Demographics: Contextual Study Of Mysore, India, S Basavapatna Kumaraswamy, J Brennan
School of Art, Design and Architecture
For developing nations the development of sustainable communities has to go hand in hand with the achievement of wider goals, where emphasis has to be given to the importance of lifestyle and social change. This inter-disciplinary research draws understanding from the social, cultural and economic studies to define the values and aspirations of the middle class and its implications on sustainable housing. One of the fastest growing economies in Asia, India, has empowered a large and powerful consumer oriented middle class. Middle class mores are aspirational and aimed at achieving western living standard and moving away from a traditional communitarian …

User Involvement In Mental Health Nurse Education: A Study Of The Effect On The Interpersonal Skills Of Student Nurses, Jonathan Perry
User Involvement In Mental Health Nurse Education: A Study Of The Effect On The Interpersonal Skills Of Student Nurses, Jonathan Perry
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
This study makes an original contribution to the evidence base for service user involvement in the teaching of interpersonal skills. The study is a synthesis of three different types of research activity. Firstly a systematic review which reviews the evidence base for service user involvement in interpersonal skills teaching. This review used inclusion criteria that restricted its scope to research that included elements that used outcomes, either qualitative or quantitative related to mental health service users involvement in teaching interpersonal skills. Four quantitative and eight qualitative studies met the criteria for inclusion. All the quantitative studies were methodologically weak. Qualitative …

Developing Sustainable Student Communities: Informal Learning And Becoming Peer, Rod Parker-Rees, Mel Joyner, Joanna Haynes
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
We aimed to exploit opportunities arising from the merging of the faculties of Health and Education to explore ways of supporting students in the development of a network of sustainable communities. While there is a substantial literature on how students engage and participate in the academic cultures of HEIs and on factors which affect student retention and quality of life, less research has been focused on the relationships between what might be called the formal curriculum and the informal learning opportunities afforded by participation in a student community. In the context of the creation of the Faculty of Health, Education and Society, …

Health, Climate Change And Sustainability: A Systematic Review And Thematic Analysis Of The Literature., A. Nichols, V. Maynard, B. Goodman, J. Richardson
School of Nursing and Midwifery
BACKGROUND: Evidence of climate change and its impact continues to be accumulated, and it is argued that the consequences of climate change are likely to result in an increased demand on health services. It has been claimed that climate change presents new challenges for health services and that strategies should be adopted to address these challenges. AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to map published literature on health, climate change and sustainability by categorising papers according to their focus on effects, strategy and actions, and to provide a thematic analysis of their content. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted …

Environmental Management In Devon And Cornwall's Small And Medium-Sized Enterprise Sector, Michael Andrew Hutchinson
Environmental Management In Devon And Cornwall's Small And Medium-Sized Enterprise Sector, Michael Andrew Hutchinson
Plymouth Business School Theses
The challenge of sustainable development has become one of the most important strategic, economic and social concerns facing global society today. Although literature on environmental management theory and sustainable development philosophy has increased apace throughout the 1980s and 1990s, very few of these writings have documented the case of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). The objectives of this research are: i) to determine the level of awareness and perception of environmental issues within the SME sector and to assess prevailing attitudes of owner/managers to the importance they attach to managing this aspect of their business operations; ii) to gain …
