Carbon Management And Scenario Planning At The Landscape Scale With Gis, Shabnam Delfan Azari
Carbon Management And Scenario Planning At The Landscape Scale With Gis, Shabnam Delfan Azari
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Carbon Management and Scenario Planning at the Landscape Scale with GIS By: Shabnam Delfan Azari It is now widely believed that globally averaged temperatures will rise significantly over the next 100 years as a result of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as carbon dioxide. Responses to the threat of future climate change are both adaptations to new climate conditions, and mitigation of the magnitude of change. Mitigation can be achieved both through reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and by increasing storage of carbon in the earth system. In particular it is thought that there is potential for …

Podcast Pre-Labs For Enhanced Learning, Roy Lowry
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Aims of project To script, record and make available a series of short (5-7 minutes) video podcasts which support first year chemistry laboratory sessions To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach Background to project Many students arrive at university with limited practical experience and hence a lot of laboratory time was spent demonstrating how to assemble equipment or correcting minor (but significant) errors in procedure. Whilst the laboratory handbook had been refined over several years, there is a limit to the amount of experience that can be transferred via the printed page. Hence, it was decided to made a series …

Development Of Mineral Particle Surfaces For The Adsorption Of Pitch From Wood Processing And Recycling Of Paper, Daniel Gantenbein
Development Of Mineral Particle Surfaces For The Adsorption Of Pitch From Wood Processing And Recycling Of Paper, Daniel Gantenbein
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
During the production of paper in paper mills, detrimental wood resin is released into the water circuit of the mill during the pulping process of the wood into fibres. This wood resin, termed pitch, can detrimentally deposit on the paper and on the paper machine equipment. The deposits mark the paper or can lead to a tear of the paper web involving a loss of output and a reduction in paper quality. Furthermore, the wood resinous compounds in paper mill effluents need to be reduced in order to minimise their toxic effects on water organisms. Talc has been the benchmark …
Sustainable Management Of The Historic Environment Resource In Upland Peat: A Study From Exmoor, Heather Joy Davies
Sustainable Management Of The Historic Environment Resource In Upland Peat: A Study From Exmoor, Heather Joy Davies
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
UK uplands preserve a rich history of human inhabitation and environmental change through standing monuments, archaeological sites, and within peat deposits. Palaeoenvironmental remains within peat can be used to reconstruct environmental histories throughout the Holocene. Small mires in varied topographic locations can allow detailed local landscape reconstruction, setting archaeological sites in environmental context, or building up a picture of the mosaic of changing landscapes through time. Recent moves towards assessing the ecosystem services provided by different landscapes mean that, to make a case for preserving upland peatlands for the palaeoenvironmental remains they preserve, we must be able to demonstrate their …

Early Mesozoic Stratigraphy, Sedimentology And Structure Of The, Emhemed Alfandi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Gharian area is used as a case study to examine the sedimentary succession, structural evolution and timing of sedimentary and structural events during basin development in the Early Mesozoic. These sediments (Kurrush, Al Aziza and Abu Shaybah Formations) are examined in order to provide palaeonvironmental and palaeogeographic reconstructions for the study area. The formations are described using facies analysis. The Kurrush is probably deposited in delta plain environment. A complete section (140 m) has been logged and seven facies from the Al Aziza Formation represent a shallow shelf platform area (inner ramp: an intertidal-subtidal carbonate flat to shelf lagoonal …
The Effect Of Sea Level Rise On Radionuclide Mobility At Contaminated Nuclear Sites, Jane Eagling
The Effect Of Sea Level Rise On Radionuclide Mobility At Contaminated Nuclear Sites, Jane Eagling
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Global sea levels are expected to rise as a result of climate change, which will lead to the inundation and erosion of low lying coastal areas and accelerate the intrusion of seawater into sub-surface sediments. Many of the UK’s legacy nuclear facilities are located in close proximity to the shore, raising questions regarding the potential mobilisation of radionuclides during sea level rise. Here batch and column experiments were used to simulate and investigate the effect of these processes on the mobilisation of key radionuclides Tc, 90Sr and U from oxic and reduced sediments under sea level rise scenarios. Strontium-90 was …
Policy Learning And The Development Of Renewable Energy Policy In The United Kingdom, Sally Murrall-Smith
Policy Learning And The Development Of Renewable Energy Policy In The United Kingdom, Sally Murrall-Smith
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Despite the UK’s abundance of renewable energy sources and the imperative for renewable energy to make a significant contribution to addressing the problems of climate change and fossil-fuel dependency, renewable energy capacity in the UK has developed slowly compared with some other EU states. The UK has introduced a succession of policies to promote renewable energy, but so far these have failed to meet national and EU targets. This signals the need for detailed examination of the reasons for these ‘failures’ and, in particular, the extent, nature and constraints on ‘policy learning’ within UK renewable energy policy. Policy learning has …
Extinction And Recovery Dynamics Of Triassic-Jurassic Macro-Invertebrate Communities, Luis Felipe Opazo Mella
Extinction And Recovery Dynamics Of Triassic-Jurassic Macro-Invertebrate Communities, Luis Felipe Opazo Mella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
This work is focused on characterising and evaluating the intensity and selectivity of the marine fauna during the Tr/J mass extinction and recovery of the ecosystem in different localities throughout Pangaea. To address this, four localities were studied: St. Audrie’s Bay, Larne and Pinhay Bay in the UK, and Portezuelo Providencia in Chile. From each locality, samples were taken at approximately 1m intervals throughout the Tr/J sections. Species abundance per sample was estimated and each species was classified according to autoecological information derived from the literature. In order to assess changes in the structure and composition of the assemblages, NMDS …
The Impact Of Future Sea-Level Rise On The London-Penzance Railway Line, David Dawson
The Impact Of Future Sea-Level Rise On The London-Penzance Railway Line, David Dawson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The coastal section of the London to Penzance railway line (Dawlish-Teignmouth) lies very close to sea level and has been susceptible to frequent closure during high seas and storm events. As the main railway connection for the southwest of England to the rest of Great Britain, it is a vital transport link for the Devon and Cornwall economy. Current understanding of future sea-level rise in the region is compromised by a lack of reliable geological data on which to establish accurate future sea-level projections. Furthermore, the impacts – in engineering and economic terms – of potential sea-level change on the …

The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche
The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The governance of security in the revanchist city- The case of Cape Town, South Africa Much has been written on the revanchist city (for example Smith, 1996; MacLeod, 2002; Belina and Helms, 2003) and the reclaiming of space from so-called ‘undesirables‘ through the means of the police. Here, the guiding ideas are policing strategies such as the ‘broken windows syndrome‘ (Kelling and Wilson, 1982) and ‘zero tolerance policing‘ (Giuliani and Bratton, 1994; Beckett and Herbert, 2008; Herbert and Beckett, 2010). However, the role of private security companies in the reclaiming of public space remains under-researched. Using a case study in …

Epidemiology And Public Health Significance Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Cattle In The Highlands Of Cameroon, Julius Awah Ndukum
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious neglected zoonosis of cattle that is prevalent but under-investigated in Cameroon, hence this study was designed to assess the epidemiology of bovine TB in cattle, risks for M. bovis infection in cattle and humans; and public health implications of zoonotic bovine TB in the highlands of Cameroon. A retrospective study of meat inspection records (1994 – 2010) was done to estimate the prevalence of TB lesions in slaughtered cattle in the North West region. The prevalence of bovine TB and anti-bovine TB antibodies in live cattle based on tuberculin skin tests (2 surveys) and …
Hidden Histories And Multiple Meanings: The Richard Dennett Collection At The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter., Sara Craig Ayres
Hidden Histories And Multiple Meanings: The Richard Dennett Collection At The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter., Sara Craig Ayres
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Ethnographic collections in western museums such as the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) carry many meanings, but by definition, they represent an intercultural encounter. This history of this encounter is often lost, overlooked, or obscured, and yet it has bearing on how the objects in the collection have been interpreted and understood. This thesis uncovers the hidden history of one particular collection in the RAMM and examines the multiple meanings that have been attributed to the objects in the collection over time. The Richard Dennett Collection was made in Africa in the years when European powers began to colonise the …

Evaluation Of Shoreline Change Using Optical Satellite Images, Case Study Of Progreso, Yucatán, Gabriela Garcia-Rubio
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
A technique to extract the shoreline from optical satellite images has been developed, evaluated and applied to the case study site of Progreso, Yucatán, México. This site was chosen as it is frequently subject to hurricanes, shows shoreline erosion and has a paucity of coastal data. The area under investigation is an 8 km length of shoreline that faces north into the Gulf of México. A novel method to extract satellite-derived shorelines (SDS) was developed ensuring the maximum contrast between sea and land. The SDS was validated using quasisimultaneous in situ shoreline measurements from one day in two different years …

Creative Tourism In Saint Petersburg: The State Of The Art, Valery Gordin, Marina Matetskaya
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
Tourism development in St. Petersburg, which is a major cultural centre, has improved in terms of tourist flows; both tourism demand and tourist products have become more diverse. These improvements give grounds for a fairly optimistic prognosis for the tourist industry in St. Petersburg. At the same time, there are a number of factors which may endanger sustainable development of tourism in St. Petersburg. The current situation calls for a more flexible and innovative approach to industry development. Among these factors are the pronounced seasonal character of tourism, the short-term visits of most of the tourists, and the rather conservative, …
Boosting Potential Creative Tourism Resources: The Case Of Siby (Mali), Lénia Marques
Boosting Potential Creative Tourism Resources: The Case Of Siby (Mali), Lénia Marques
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
This paper further develops the conceptual framework for creative tourism, discussing the co-creation of experiences and the identification of potential resources for creative tourism development. The case of the village of Siby, in Mali, West Africa, illustrates the development of tourism and creativity in a non-western, rural environment, where creative tourism experiences can emerge spontaneously. The impacts of creative tourism are analysed and the need for more specific policies is highlighted, particularly in view of the inherent risks in creative tourism development.
A Gis Based Spatial Decision Support System For Landscape Character Assessment, Faye Elanor Davey
A Gis Based Spatial Decision Support System For Landscape Character Assessment, Faye Elanor Davey
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) provides a structured approach to identifying the character and distinctiveness about the landscape. It is a tool used to identify what makes a location unique, a set of techniques and procedures used to map differences between landscapes based on their physical, cultural and historical characteristics. Although the UK has committed to assessing all of its landscapes by signing the European Landscape Convention in 2006, only 60% of coverage has been achieved. The majority of LCAs are carried out by professional environment or landscape consultancies rather than ‘in-house’. Geographical Information Systems are increasingly being used to collate …
Developing Methods For Understanding The Nature Of Voting Patterns And Party Competition In Britain, Galina Borisyuk
Developing Methods For Understanding The Nature Of Voting Patterns And Party Competition In Britain, Galina Borisyuk
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This research both develops new methods and expands upon existing methodologies in order to improve our understanding of voting patterns and party competition in Britain. The thesis comprises five sections, each of which relates to a particular research focus. The first and principal section describes the process of determining a new method for decomposing electoral bias for three-party competition under simple plurality rules of voting. The study of electoral bias is important for voting systems that requires periodic boundary reviews intended to equalise electorate and to remove malapportionment. These papers describe both the process for developing the threeparty bias method …

Emancipating The Many: A Practice Led Investigation Into Emergent Paradigms Of Immediate Political Action, Wolfgang Fiel
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The immediate catalyst for having taken up this study was the violent outbreak of weeks of public unrest in the Paris banlieus in the wake of the shooting of young man on the run from the police on October 27 2005. The obvious inability of local municipalities and police forces to explain, let alone to anticipate the swelling discontent with a system which is generally assumed to work effectively and to benefit all has led me to the assumption that we have entered a stage where the concept of representational democracy is seriously compromised. The sheer scale or projected growth …

A Garden In Her Cups: Botanical Medicines Of The Anglo-American Home, C.1580 – 1800, Bruna Gushurst-Moore
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis focuses on the domestic use of plant-based medicines within Early Modern English and Colonial American households, and establishes the defining framework of a domestic botanical culture. It reconstructs the relationship between domestic, popular, and learned medical cultures to reveal the breadth of that practice, demonstrating the unique characteristics of the domestic culture which are underpinned by a shared canon of herbs and a high degree of flexible adaptability by individual practitioners. The botanicals (medicinal plants and the remedies made from them) are themselves analysed through the genres of household receipt book manuscripts, private letters, and journals, as well …
Spirited Measures And Victorian Hangovers: Public Attitudes To Alcohol, The Law And Moral Regulation., Henry Yeomans
Spirited Measures And Victorian Hangovers: Public Attitudes To Alcohol, The Law And Moral Regulation., Henry Yeomans
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
From alarm about the prospect of ‘twenty-four drinking’ to campaigns for a minimum price per unit, the last decade has shown that alcohol consumption is an inflammatory issue in this country. It has become commonplace to hear that drinking is ‘out of control’ and that it is a new and worsening problem largely unique to Britain. However, comparative research reveals that alcohol consumption in Britain is not unusually high and even a cursory glance at history shows that extreme bouts of alarm about drinking have been common on these shores since at least the eighteenth century. What is at the …

Street Disorder In The Metropolis, 1905-39, Stefan Slater
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article uses insights from sociology, criminology and anthropology to establish patterns of disorder in early-to-mid twentieth century London. As criminal statistics are shown to be the products of both behavioural and institutional practices, this discussion opens with an examination of police culture to comprehend the range of variables influencing decision making on the beat. The second section develops this occupational model further to interpret the trends shown by the statistics. With this appreciation of policing in practice, the third part argues that integrating Taylor‟s supply-side approach with a street-level understanding of the relationship between police and policed, while considering …
Determinants Of Household Livelihood Security In Poor Urban Settlements In Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter
Determinants Of Household Livelihood Security In Poor Urban Settlements In Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The paper applies a quantitative approach to measure and identify the determinants of household livelihood security (HLS) status in poor urban settlements of two cities in Bangladesh. Indices were computed for five HLS areas (economic, food, health, education and empowerment) using a large set of socio-economic characteristics of the households. Results reveal that economic security is the dominant component of the overall livelihood security status followed by food security. Irrespective of regional differences in opportunities, people in poor urban settlements appear equally insecure. Development programs focusing on improvements in access to assets, education and livestock/fisheries based livelihoods programs are suggested.

Reflective Practice For Marine Planning: A Case Study Of Marine Nature-Based Tourism Partnerships, Claire Kelly, Stephen Essex, Gillian Glegg
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
An essential component of ecosystem-based approaches in coastal zone management and the emerging field of marine planning are partnerships and collaborations between a range of multi-sector organisations and individuals. Ensuring that partnerships are effective is a priority for those responsible for planning and management in coastal and marine environments. Current partnership evaluation approaches, however, tend to view effectiveness as the cumulative end result of a set of variables acting in a linear process at a specific point in time. Given that governance and participation are acknowledged as non-linear and multifaceted processes, more reflective and nuanced approaches that take account of …

Eight years after DNA barcoding was formally proposed on a large scale, CO1 sequences are rapidly accumulating from around the world. While studies to date have mostly targeted local or regional species assemblages, the recent launch of the global iBOL project (International Barcode of Life), highlights the need to understand the effects of geographical scale on Barcoding's goals. Sampling has been central in the debate on DNA Barcoding, but the effect of the geographical scale of sampling has not yet been thoroughly and explicitly tested with empirical data. Here, we present a CO1 data set of aquatic predaceous diving beetles …

Assessing The Congruence Of Thermal Niche Estimations Derived From Distribution And Physiological Data. A Test Using Diving Beetles., David Sánchez-Fernández, Pedro Aragón, David T. Bilton, Jorge M. Lobo
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
A basic aim of ecology is to understand the determinants of organismal distribution, the niche concept and species distribution models providing key frameworks to approach the problem. As temperature is one of the most important factors affecting species distribution, the estimation of thermal limits is crucially important for inferring range constraints. It is expectable that thermal physiology data derived from laboratory experiments and species' occurrences may express different aspects of the species' niche. However, there is no study systematically testing this prediction in a given taxonomic group while controlling by potential phylogenetic inertia. We estimate the thermal niches of twelve …
