Bone-Eating Osedax Worms Lived On Mesozoic Marine Reptile Deadfalls., S Danise, Nd Higgs
Bone-Eating Osedax Worms Lived On Mesozoic Marine Reptile Deadfalls., S Danise, Nd Higgs
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
We report fossil traces of Osedax, a genus of siboglinid annelids that consume the skeletons of sunken vertebrates on the ocean floor, from early-Late Cretaceous (approx. 100 Myr) plesiosaur and sea turtle bones. Although plesiosaurs went extinct at the end-Cretaceous mass extinction (66 Myr), chelonioids survived the event and diversified, and thus provided sustenance for Osedax in the 20 Myr gap preceding the radiation of cetaceans, their main modern food source. This finding shows that marine reptile carcasses, before whales, played a key role in the evolution and dispersal of Osedax and confirms that its generalist ability of colonizing different …

Productivity And Efficiency Impacts Of Urea Deep Placement Technology In Modern Rice Production: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, S Rahman, Bk Barmon
Productivity And Efficiency Impacts Of Urea Deep Placement Technology In Modern Rice Production: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, S Rahman, Bk Barmon
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Rice is the most dominant field crop in Bangladesh covering 75% of the total cultivated area and consumes 80% of the total fertilizers alone. Nevertheless, the productivity of rice in Bangladesh remains one of the lowest in the world. Urea, the main source of nitrogen (N), plays a key role in rice production, is required in large amount, is the most limited nutrient and also suffers from heavy system losses. A worldwide crisis of urea fertilizer in 2008 spurred the need to economise on its use with urgency. The Urea Deep Placement (UDP) technology is aimed at increasing N fertilizer …
Adapting Relationships With Place: Investigating The Evolving Place Attachment And ‘Sense Of Place’ Of Uk Higher Education Students During A Period Of Intense Transition, Mark Holton
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
In recent years interest has emerged regarding the geographies of higher education students, particularly in patterns of mobility and dispersion. While anecdotal rhetoric suggests a ‘typical student’ exists within UK institutions. What resonates is the notion that students are inherently heterogeneous, experiencing University in differing ways and times according to their circumstances and year of study. This paper uses ‘walking interviews’ conducted with University of Portsmouth students as a method to unpack how ‘non-local’ students might go about interpreting their sense of place within their term-time location. This methodology was designed specifically to ensure discussions of ‘sense of place’ remain …

Urban Regeneration: Thirty Years Of Change On Plymouth’S Waterfront, Stephen Essex, Peter Ford
Urban Regeneration: Thirty Years Of Change On Plymouth’S Waterfront, Stephen Essex, Peter Ford
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Waterfront revitalisation has become one of the main areas of concentration and activity in urban regeneration as former port, military and resort sites seek new and appropriate uses. Various regeneration approaches have been implemented over the years, with most involving central-government funding, but with different levels of partnership with the private sector and/or the local community. This paper explores in detail the transformation of the waterfront in the English city of Plymouth from its former functions as a naval port and dockyard, with both military and commercial port activities, to its predominantly post-industrial focus on residential, leisure, tourism, and heritage …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
AbstractActivity since 1995 at Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat has alternated between andesite lava extrusion and quiescence, which are well correlated with seismicity and ground deformation cycles. Large variations in SO2 flux do not correlate with these alternations, but high and low HCl/SO2 characterize lava dome extrusion and quiescent periods respectively. Since lava extrusion ceased (February 2010) steady SO2 emissions have continued at an average rate of 374 tonnes/day (± 140 t/d), and incandescent fumaroles (temperatures up to 610oC) on the dome have not changed position or cooled. Occasional short bursts (over several hours) of higher (∼ 10x) SO2 flux …
The Geometrical Thought Of Isaac Newton: An Examination Of The Meaning Of Geometry Between The 16th And 18th Centuries, Nicole Victoria Bloye
The Geometrical Thought Of Isaac Newton: An Examination Of The Meaning Of Geometry Between The 16th And 18th Centuries, Nicole Victoria Bloye
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Our thesis explores aspects of the geometrical work and thought of Isaac Newton in order to better understand and re-evaluate his approach to geometry, and specifically his synthetic methods and the organic description of plane curves. In pursuing this research we study Newton's geometrical work in the context of the changing view of geometry between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, a period defined by the responses of the early modern geometers to a new Latin edition of Pappus' Collectio. By identifying some of the major challenges facing geometers of this period as they attempted to define and practice …

When Convenience Is Inconvenient: ‘Healthy’ Family Foodways And The Persistent Intersectionalities Of Gender And Class, Julie M. Parsons
When Convenience Is Inconvenient: ‘Healthy’ Family Foodways And The Persistent Intersectionalities Of Gender And Class, Julie M. Parsons
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article draws on findings from an auto/biographical study about relationships with food to demonstrate how everyday foodways continue to be influenced by the intersectionalities of gender and class. Following Bourdieu [1984. Distinction, a social critique of the judgement of taste. London: Routledge] how ‘foodies’ use food and foodways (the production, preparation, serving and eating of food) as a material and cultural display of capital (Johnston, J., & Baumann, S. 2010. Foodies, democracy and distinction in the gourmet kitchen. London: Routledge) or even ‘culinary capital’ (Naccarato, P., & LeBesco, K. 2012. Culinary capital. London: Berg) has been demonstrated. There has …
Determination Of Copper Species In Atmospheric Waters, Joe Palmer
Determination Of Copper Species In Atmospheric Waters, Joe Palmer
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The total copper concentration was determined in rainwater and roof runoff collected in Plymouth, UK between Sept-Oct 2013. The concentration was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and found to be 2.19 ± 0.456 and 3.18 ± 0.506 μg L-1 for rainwater and roof runoff, respectively. These were found to coincide with other published rainwater Cu concentrations. The method itself showed poor accuracy, with a 77.6% recovery for Cu. A method for the determination of Cu(I) by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry using bathocuproine was also evaluated. A series of Cu(I)Br calibration standards between concentrations of 0.05 and 0.5 mM were used …
Are The Current Methods Of Remediation To Reduce Nitrate Contamination In Groundwater In The Developing World Effective? A Systematic Review, Jessica Nadin
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Nitrate contamination of groundwater has become a growing problem, particularly in the developing world as a result of agricultural intensification and rapid urbanisation leading to leaching and run off. Large numbers of people depend on groundwater for drinking and ingestion of nitrate contaminated waters can lead to methaemoglobinemia and cancers. This review examines biological, chemical and physical methods currently employed to remove nitrate contamination from groundwater. Review of these methods is achieved by extensive literature searching and utilisation of inclusion criteria and quality assessments to obtain relevant results. The review found that all of the methods examined are effective. Effectiveness …
Determinants Of Livelihood Choices: An Empirical Analysis From Rural Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter
Determinants Of Livelihood Choices: An Empirical Analysis From Rural Bangladesh, S Rahman, S Akter
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study identifies socio-economic determinants of livelihood choices of rural households in Bangladesh (4,195 households from 139 villages) by applying a multinomial logit model of occupational choice and a multivariate Tobit model that allows for jointness in decision making. Results reveal that households choose multiple livelihood options. A number of socio-economic factors and resources at the household level as well as the state of rural infrastructure significantly determine households’ livelihood choice. Overall, resource-rich and educated households engage in diversified livelihoods and rural infrastructure promotes such diversification. Female-headed households fail to participate in any of the livelihood categories and consequently earn …

Palimtextual Tracts: Susan Howe’S Rearticulation Of Place, Mandy Bloomfield
Palimtextual Tracts: Susan Howe’S Rearticulation Of Place, Mandy Bloomfield
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article examines American poet Susan Howe’s engagement with landscape and place across the trajectory of her career, centrally examining three key poems: Secret History of the Dividing Line (1978), Thorow (1987) and Souls of the Labadie Tract (2007). In so doing, it demonstrates this work’s pertinence for discussions of environmental aesthetics. Starting from the premise that Howe’s poetic engagement with entangled historical and environmental questions is as much formal as it is thematic, I focus on two of her prominent techniques: the “palimtextual” excavation of source materials and the spatial use of the page. I argue that this poetry’s …

Climate Change Response At The Farm Level: A Review Of Farmers’ Awareness And Adaptation Strategies In Developing Countries, Nichola Harmer, Sanzidur Rahman
Climate Change Response At The Farm Level: A Review Of Farmers’ Awareness And Adaptation Strategies In Developing Countries, Nichola Harmer, Sanzidur Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper provides an overview of farmers’ awareness and a typology of adaptation strategies undertaken in order to combat climate change at the farm-level in developing countries. The review suggests that the extent to which farmers are aware of climate change is uneven, and the link between perception and action is often unclear. Farmers adopt a range of strategies from financial responses, to agricultural changes, to religious and cultural strategies, to the use of local and wider support networks. However, whether these actions are adaptation or coping strategies is debatable. Response to climate change has both spatial and temporal dimensions; …

RATIONALE: Characterising complex mixtures of organic compounds in polar fractions of heavy petroleum is challenging, but is important for pollution studies and for exploration and production geochemistry. Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) stored in large tailings ponds by Canadian oil sands industries contains such mixtures. METHODS: A polar OSPW fraction was obtained by silver ion solid-phase extraction with methanol elution. This was examined by numerous methods, including electrospray ionisation (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICRMS) and ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (uHPLC)/Orbitrap MS, in multiple ionisation and MS/MS modes. Compounds were also synthesised for comparison. RESULTS: The major ESI …

Determination Of Dissolved Iron In Seawater: A Historical Review, Paul J. Worsfold, Maeve C. Lohan, Simon J. Ussher, Andrew R. Bowie
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper overviews the evolution of suitable analytical approaches for the determination of dissolved iron in seawater. The focus is on sampling and sample treatment, detection methods and quality assurance of the data. Iron is a vital trace element for the growth of marine organisms and is the limiting micronutrient for primary production in many parts of the world's oceans. The concentration of dissolved iron in seawater therefore influences the past and present day global carbon cycle and consequently Earth's climate. Hence it is important to understand the marine biogeochemistry of iron and quantify the spatial and temporal distribution of …
Marketing Efficiency Of Cassava Products In Delta State, Nigeria: A Stochastic Profit Frontier Approach, S Rahman, Bo Awerije
Marketing Efficiency Of Cassava Products In Delta State, Nigeria: A Stochastic Profit Frontier Approach, S Rahman, Bo Awerije
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The present study estimates the level of marketing margin and marketing efficiency of cassava products (i.e., root tuber, gari, fufu, tapioca, starch, and flour) of 105 marketers from three regions of Delta State, Nigeria using a stochastic profit frontier approach. Results reveal that a rise in purchase price of cassava products as well as unit marketing cost significantly reduce marketing margin. A rise in sale price of cassava products increase marketing margin as expected. Marketing experience significantly improves marketing margin as expected. The mean level of marketing efficiency is very low estimated at 55% implying that marketing margin can be …

Platinum-Based Anticancer Drugs In Waste Waters Of A Major Uk Hospital And Predicted Concentrations In Recipient Surface Waters., Nitin Vyas, Andrew Turner, Graham Sewell
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Concentrations of the cytotoxic platinum-based anticancer drugs, as total Pt, have been measured over a three week period in one of the main drains and in the effluent of the oncology ward of a major UK hospital (Derriford, Plymouth). Concentrations of Pt were highly variable in both discharges, and ranged from about 0.02 to 140 μg L(-1) in the oncology effluent and from about 0.03 to 100 μg L(-1) in the main drain. A comparison of drug administration figures over the study period with an estimate of the quantity of Pt discharged through the drains suggests that about 22% of …
Ecological Succession Of A Jurassic Shallow-Water Ichthyosaur Fall, S Danise, Rj Twitchett, K Matts
Ecological Succession Of A Jurassic Shallow-Water Ichthyosaur Fall, S Danise, Rj Twitchett, K Matts
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
After the discovery of whale fall communities in modern oceans, it has been hypothesized that during the Mesozoic the carcasses of marine reptiles created similar habitats supporting long-lived and specialized animal communities. Here, we report a fully documented ichthyosaur fall community, from a Late Jurassic shelf setting, and reconstruct the ecological succession of its micro- and macrofauna. The early 'mobile-scavenger' and 'enrichment-opportunist' stages were not succeeded by a 'sulphophilic stage' characterized by chemosynthetic molluscs, but instead the bones were colonized by microbial mats that attracted echinoids and other mat-grazing invertebrates. Abundant cemented suspension feeders indicate a well-developed 'reef stage' with …

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, G Blakely, C Hennessy, Mc Chung, H Skirton
Peninsula Dental School
As part of an ethnographic study, the impact of foreign postings on spouses who accompany military personnel was explored. Individual interviews and focus groups with 34 British military spouses based in one location in southern Europe were conducted. Key findings suggested that reaction to a foreign posting was a reflection of personal attitudes, prior experiences, support, ability to adjust to change and strength of relationship with the serving spouse and community. For many the experience was positive due to the increased opportunity for family time, for others this helped to compensate for the difficulties experienced. Some military spouses experienced significant …

Bacterio-Plankton Transformation Of Diazepam And 2-Amino-5-Chlorobenzophenone In River Waters., Alan D. Tappin, J. Paul Loughnane, Alan J. Mccarthy, Mark F. Fitzsimons
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Benzodiazepines are a large class of commonly-prescribed drugs used to treat a variety of clinical disorders. They have been shown to produce ecological effects at environmental concentrations, making understanding their fate in aquatic environments very important. In this study, uptake and biotransformations by riverine bacterio-plankton of the benzodiazepine, diazepam, and 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone, ACB (a photo-degradation product of diazepam and several other benzodiazepines), were investigated using batch microcosm incubations. These were conducted using water and bacterio-plankton populations from contrasting river catchments (Tamar and Mersey, UK), both in the presence and absence of a peptide, added as an alternative organic substrate. Incubations lasted …

Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel
Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel
Plymouth Institute of Education
This article will begin by outlining influential attempts by historians and sociologists to develop a more adequate theoretical understanding of past and contemporary childhoods, focusing on the major problems that stem from the pivotal role that ‘developmentalism’ plays in their arguments. I will argue that sociologists can overcome some of their deepest fears about the role of developmental psychology by developing a relational approach that integrates the biological and social aspects of children’s development. In the development of a relational sociology of early childhood we need to make important connections with closely related disciplines, but at the same time draw …

Profitability And Efficiency Of Cassava Production At The Farm-Level In Delta State, Nigeria, Bo Awerije, S Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The present study examines profitability, technical, cost and allocative efficiencies of cassava production by applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) of 315 farmers from three regions of Delta State, Nigeria. Results revealed that cassava production was profitable (overall profit margin 1.93), with significant differences across regions as well as farm size categories. Mean levels of technical, cost and allocative efficiencies are low estimated at 40%, 29% and 73% respectively, also with significant differences across regions as well as farm size categories. The implication is that cassava production can be increased substantially by reallocation of resources to optimal levels, given input and …
