Baghdad’S Thirdspace: Between Liminality, Anti-Structures And Territorial Mappings, Sana Murrani
Baghdad’S Thirdspace: Between Liminality, Anti-Structures And Territorial Mappings, Sana Murrani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Wedged in-between the dense urban grain of Baghdad, blast walls of t-shaped concrete have littered the streets and neighbourhoods since 2003, after the US led invasion. The idiosyncrasy of these walls lies in their exaggerated spatial liminality. They appear, change location and disappear overnight, and on a daily basis, leaving Iraqis to navigate through labyrinths of in-between spaces. This article critically reveals the new social and power structures that have emerged in the context of the city in response to the condition resulting from this unique urban intervention. This uncanny spatial and social condition of permanent liminality will be analysed …
Image Or To Image?, G Corino
Image Or To Image?, G Corino
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The proliferation of images towards an iconic communication in the hypermediacy of social media, of locative media, of Internet of Things (IoT) on one side and the visualization of real-time data, the deep learning algorithm on the other, question the essence of how reality is perceived, created and the nature and role of images itself. The common understanding of what constitutes an image is related to the representation of things and people. In the context of instant messaging, social media and Big Data, distributed and networked IoT, this seems not to be the case anymore. IoT extends the idea of …

AbstractFor more than a decade, scientists have argued about the warmth of the current interglaciation. Was the warmth of the preindustrial late Holocene natural in origin, the result of orbital changes that had not yet driven the system into a new glacial state? Or was it in considerable degree the result of humans intervening in the climate system through greenhouse gas emissions from early agriculture? Here we summarize new evidence that moves this debate forward by testing both hypotheses. By comparing late Holocene responses to those that occurred during previous interglaciations (in section 2), we assess whether the late Holocene …

Visualisation Studio For The Analysis Of Massive Datasets, Roy Colin Tucker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis describes the research underpinning and the development of a cross platform application for the analysis of simultaneously recorded multi-dimensional spike trains. These spike trains are believed to carry the neural code that encodes information in a biological brain. A number of statistical methods already exist to analyse the temporal relationships between the spike trains. Historically, hundreds of spike trains have been simultaneously recorded, however as a result of technological advances recording capability has increased. The analysis of thousands of simultaneously recorded spike trains is now a requirement. Effective analysis of large data sets requires software tools that fully …

School of Health Professions
To identify and problematise the key issues characterising the relationship between global sustainability contexts and the limited response of HE to date - with the purpose of unlocking the potential for innovative, replicable efforts to develop sustainability competencies through innovation in curriculum policy and practice, through addressing these sub-aims: How far does HE policy accommodate and reflect the need for sustainability competencies? How can capacity for teaching for competency be built and supported through new policies? How can curricula and pedagogy be better aligned to facilitate the building of sustainability competency in learners and teachers? What effect …

On The Bicyclic Acids Of Petroleum, Michael Wilde
On The Bicyclic Acids Of Petroleum, Michael Wilde
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The identification of petroleum acids, also known as ‘naphthenic’ acids (NA), has been an analytical challenge for over 140 years. However, most recent interest in NA has arisen due to concerns over their presence and apparent associated toxic effect in oil platform produced waters and oil sands process waters (OSPW), respectively. Understanding the toxicity, transformations during biodegradation and remediation treatments and predicting the fate of NA in the environment will be aided by the identification of individual NA. However the elucidation of individual acid structures by standard chromatographic techniques, such as GC-MS, has so far been limited by the extreme …
An Investigation Into The Opportunities And Challenges For A Low Carbon Tourism Economy In The South West Of England, Emma Rachel Whittlesea
An Investigation Into The Opportunities And Challenges For A Low Carbon Tourism Economy In The South West Of England, Emma Rachel Whittlesea
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Achieving a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions has become a key challenge facing global society and its economies. Despite this, tourism policy and strategic planning rarely acknowledge carbon mitigation as a strategic objective and tourism as a sector is rarely recognised in low-carbon plans. This situation represents a substantial challenge, as tourism and travel have a high-carbon impact and carbon mitigation is hindered by lack of carbon data, and a continued drive for economic growth. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effectiveness of carbon footprinting and scenario modelling to help examine the opportunities and challenges for implementing …
Total Arsenic And Arsenic Speciation In Indigenous Food Stuffs, Bashdar Sadee
Total Arsenic And Arsenic Speciation In Indigenous Food Stuffs, Bashdar Sadee
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The properties of an element are highly dependent on its chemical form, it’s called elemental speciation. This study evaluates the arsenic species found in a range of food stuffs together with growing environments and toxicity issues. Total arsenic concentrations in fish tissue and vegetable crops were determined by ICP-MS following microwave-assisted acid digestion using nitric acid/hydrogen peroxide, trypsin and cellulase enzymatic extraction procedures. The extracted arsenic species were then quantified using HPLC-ICP-MS. A dilute nitric acid (1 % (v/v)) digestion procedure was also used to extract arsenic species from rice and the different parts (root, skin, stem, leaf and grain) …
Micropalaeontology, Palaeoenvironments And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Sulaiy Formation Of Eastern Saudi Arabia, Saleh Alenezi
Micropalaeontology, Palaeoenvironments And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Sulaiy Formation Of Eastern Saudi Arabia, Saleh Alenezi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Sulaiy Formation, which is the oldest unit in the Lower Cretaceous succession, is conformably overlain by the Yamama Formation and it is a challenge to identify the precise age of the two formations using foraminifera and other microfossil assemblages. In the eastern side of Saudi Arabia, the Sulaiy Formation and the base of Yamama Formation are poorly studied. The main objectives of this study is to enhance the understanding of the Sulaiy Formation sequence stratigraphical correlation, regional lateral variations and palaeoenvironmental investigation. Lithological and semi-quantitative micropalaeontological analysis of 1277 thin sections taken from core samples from nine cored wells …
Development Of Biomarker-Based Proxies For Paleo Sea-Ice Reconstructions, Lukas Smik
Development Of Biomarker-Based Proxies For Paleo Sea-Ice Reconstructions, Lukas Smik
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The analysis of the sea-ice diatom biomarker IP25 (a mono-unsaturated Highly Branched Isoprenoid (HBI) alkene) in Arctic marine sediments has previously been shown to provide a useful qualitative proxy measure for the past spring sea-ice occurrence. In the Southern Ocean the occurrence and variable abundance of a structurally similar di-unsaturated HBI (HBI diene II) has previously been proposed as a proxy measure of paleo sea-ice extent. However, the use of such biomarker proxies remains under development. In the current study, a number of additional palaeoceanographic developments of HBIs as sea-ice biomarkers in both polar regions has been undertaken. For the …

Cenozoic Terrestrial Palaeoenvironemtal Change: An Investigation Of The Petrockstowe And Bovey Basins, South West United Kingdom, Mohammed Suleiman Chaanda
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Petrockstowe and Bovey basins are two similar pull apart (strike slip) basins located on the Sticklepath – Lustleigh Fault Zone (SLFZ) in Devon, SW England. The SLFZ is one of the several faults on the Cornubian Peninsula and may be linked to Variscan structures rejuvenated in Palaeogene times. The bulk of the basins’ fill consists of clays, silts, lignites and sands of Palaeogene age, comparable to the Lough Neagh Basin (Northern Ireland), which is also thought to be part of the SLFZ. In this study a multiproxy approach involving sedimentary facies analysis, palynological analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis …
Magnetic Fabric, Palaeomagnetic And Structural Investigation Of The Accretion Of Lower Oceanic Crust Using Ophiolitic Analogues, Matthew Charles Meyer
Magnetic Fabric, Palaeomagnetic And Structural Investigation Of The Accretion Of Lower Oceanic Crust Using Ophiolitic Analogues, Matthew Charles Meyer
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This thesis presents the results of a combined magnetic fabric and palaeomagnetic analysis of lower crustal rocks exposed in the Oman (Semail) ophiolite. This has long been an important natural laboratory for understanding the construction of oceanic crust at fast spreading axes and its subsequent tectonic evolution, but magnetic investigations in the ophiolite have been limited. Analyses presented here involve using: (i) magnetic anisotropies as a proxy for magmatic petrofabrics in lower crustal rocks in order to contribute to outstanding questions regarding the mode of accretion of fast-spread oceanic crust; and (ii) classical palaeomagnetic analyses to determine the nature of …

A Framework To Support Developers In The Integration And Application Of Linked And Open Data, Timm Heuss
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
In the last years, the number of freely available Linked and Open Data datasets has multiplied into tens of thousands. The numbers of applications taking advantage of it, however, have not. Thus, large portions of potentially valuable data remain unexploited and are inaccessible for lay users. Therefore the upfront investment in releasing data in the first place is hard to justify. The lack of applications needs to be addressed in order not to undermine efforts put into Linked and Open Data. In existing research, strong indicators can be found that the dearth of applications is due to a lack of …

Performing Lgbt Pride In Plymouth 1950 - 2012, Alan Butler
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis considers how the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communities of Plymouth have performed and signified their own culture and identities during the period 1950 to 2012. Its source materials were largely generated by conducting oral history interviews with members of Plymouth’s LGB and T communities. This resulted in the creation of an archive which included thirty-seven interviews conducted with twenty-four individuals. These interviews, in conjunction with other uncovered archival memorabilia, now form a specific LGBT collection with Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. This PhD thesis interrogates this newly created community archive accession, using theories of performance as …

Social Exclusion, Resort Decline And The English Seaside, Steven Jakes
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Traditionally seaside resorts have been one of the least understood of Britain’s ‘problem areas’. This thesis breaks new ground by reporting on an exploratory data analysis to probe the influence of resort decline on social exclusion in England’s seaside resorts. Drawing on a wide range of socio-economic datasets and quantitative methods of data analysis and GIS software, the study investigates the scale, nature and extent of multiple deprivation in English seaside resorts, differences in socio-economic structure between deprived and non-deprived resorts and the factors that may explain these differences, and the nature and incidence of localised problem complexes. A combination …
Poems To The Sea And Painterly Poetics: Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Cole Swensen, Peter Gillies
Poems To The Sea And Painterly Poetics: Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Cole Swensen, Peter Gillies
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Poems to the Sea: Rather than narrating or describing a work of visual art, the poems that form this collection show an accumulation, juxtaposition and realignment of material ranging from art historical detail and critique to a more personal, location specific response to works viewed in galleries and museums. Many of the poems engage with non-representational artworks and question how best to reflect, translate or expand upon their transformative effects. The first section, ‘Museum Notes’, explores Charles Olson’s open field poetics by giving artists and writers a conversational voice. ‘Sound Fields’, the second section, responds to individual works of art …

This thesis takes a theoretical framework constructed for transdisciplinary research within different natural science disciplines and investigates what kind of new knowledge is produced when this framework is applied to projects at the interface of art and natural science. The main case study is “Sauti ya Wakulima – The Voice of the Farmers”, which involves collaboration with another intervention artist, and with natural scientists and farmers. This is a collaborative knowledge project with small-scale urban as well as rural farmers in Tanzania who have created an online community archive of their farming practices by using mobile phones to upload images …
Embodying Topeng: Gender, Training And Intercultural Encounters, Tiffany Strawson
Embodying Topeng: Gender, Training And Intercultural Encounters, Tiffany Strawson
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This research centres on the Balinese performance tradition known as topeng which translates as Balinese masked dance-drama. In Bali this genre is performed traditionally in spaces reserved for religious ceremonies. The research questions the extent to which, and how, it may be possible for a non-Balinese person to embody a culturally coded, sacred object (the mask) and how a woman is able to make meaning and express herself within a genre which is traditionally the preserve of men. The research has therefore sought to develop an individual and intercultural approach to both the design of new masks and their performance. …

Spectral And Chromatographic Characterisation Of The Onoceroid, Ambrane: A Potential Novel Biological Marker, Paul A. Sutton, Steven J. Rowland
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) characteristics, including GC retention indices and mass spectra, of isomers of the tricyclic onoceroid C30 hydrocarbon, ambrane (1,1,4a,6-tetramethyl-5-{4-methyl-6-[2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexyl]hexyl}decahydronaphthalene) are reported. Ambrane is yet to be reported in sediments or petroleum: other biochemically-related onoceroids, such as onoceranes and serratanes, have been. Now that GC–MS data are available, a search for ambranes in geochemical samples may be both feasible and warranted.

Primary linguistic data were collected from travel texts collated within a portfolio of the researcher’s own negotiated and sustained practice as a travel writer. Within this portfolio the researcher engaged with a variety of travel text types, including a travel blog, prose and a poem. A close reading of these portfolio texts is presented, along with the introduction of the Aim, Design, Assessment (ADA) apparatus – a tool developed to aid the analysis and …
An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner
An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Bismuth is a heavy metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly defined. In this study, we exposed three different species of macroalgae (the chlorophyte, Ulva lactuca, the phaeophyte, Fucus vesiculosus, and the rhodophyte, Chondrus crispus) to different concentrations of Bi (up to 50 g L-1) under controlled, laboratory conditions. After a period of 48-h, the phytotoxicity of Bi was measured in terms of chlorophyll fluorescence quenching, and extracellular and intracellular accumulation of Bi determined after EDTA extraction and acid digestion, respectively. For all algae, both the internalisation and total accumulation of Bi were proportional to the concentration …

Measuring Environmental Sustainability In Agriculture: A Composite Environmental Impact Index Approach, Ne Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman, Mf Rola-Rubzen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The present study develops a composite environmental impact index (CEII) to evaluate the extent of environmental degradation in agriculture after successfully validating its flexibility, applicability and relevance as a tool. The CEII tool is then applied to empirically measure the extent of environmental impacts of High Yield Variety (HYV) rice cultivation in three districts of north-western Bangladesh for a single crop year (October, 2012-September, 2013). Results reveal that 27 to 69 per cent of the theoretical maximum level of environmental damage is created due to HYV rice cultivation with significant regional variations in the CEII scores, implying that policy interventions …
