International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 399 collected new cores from the Atlantis Massif (30°N; Mid-Atlantic Ridge), an oceanic core complex that hosts the Lost City hydrothermal field (LCHF). Studies of the Atlantis Massif and the LCHF have transformed our understanding of tectonic, magmatic, hydrothermal, and microbial processes at slow-spreading ridges. The Atlantis Massif was the site of four previous expeditions (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions 304, 305, and 340T and IODP Expedition 357) and numerous dredging and submersible expeditions. The deepest IODP hole in young (<2 My) oceanic lithosphere, Hole U1309D, was drilled ~5 km north of the LCHF and reached 1415 meters below seafloor (mbsf) through a series of primitive gabbroic rocks. A series of 17 shallow (<16.4 mbsf) holes were also drilled at 9 sites across the south wall of the massif during Expedition 357, recovering heterogeneous rock types including hydrothermally altered peridotites, gabbroic, and basaltic rocks. The hydrologic regime differs between the two locations, with a low-permeability conductive regime in Hole U1309D and a high- (and possibly deep-reaching) permeability regime along the southern wall.

Creative Coastal Futures: Developing Cultural And Creative Industries, Katharine Willis, Chris Bennewith, Kasper De Graaf May 2025

Creative Coastal Futures: Developing Cultural And Creative Industries, Katharine Willis, Chris Bennewith, Kasper De Graaf

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The UK is a coastal country, no one lives more than 80 miles from the coast, and indeed when you get down to into Cornwall and Devon this reduces to just 20 miles. Our coasts are a rich source of natural and cultural assets replete with places people value, visit and choose to live in. Yet our coastal communities are some of the most overlooked, challenged and deprived in the country. The strengths that exist in our coastal areas – around natural resources and pockets of specialised skills – are compromised by low levels of economic capacity and activity, aggravated …

The global challenge of marine plastic pollution requires systemic change in our relationship with plastic. Thecurrent linear plastic economy must transition to a sustainable circular model, but is hindered by behaviouralchange difficulties, particularly in coastal regions facing resource limitations and a lack of research attention. This study investigates waste management (WM) behaviours in Java and Bali, Indonesia, through a householdsurvey (N = 506). By examining the roles of community attachment and environmental concern in WM behaviours, we contribute to the theoretical understanding of these concepts within a novel context. Our findingsreveal that community attachment and environmental concern predict WM behaviours, yet …

Innovative Circular Business Model As A Tool For Applying Rational Consumption Of The Natural Resource Landscape, Nataliia Gavkalova, John Martin, Nadiia Shmygol

Professional Services

Economic growth within the traditional linear production model increases environmental pressure, depleting resources, and raising pollution levels. In contrast, the circular economy promotes closed production cycles, ensuring the repeated use of extracted resources. However, transitioning to this model requires active innovation adoption. Despite its rising popularity, circular economy concepts remain underdeveloped scientifically, lacking formulated models that comprehensively address implementation in both public and private sectors. This study aims to theoretically and practically substantiate the development of an innovative circular business model as a tool for rational natural resource consumption. Achieving this requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating business models, technological innovations, …

Another Gap On The Rota: A Scoping Review Of Attrition From Specialty Training In Secondary Care, Hannah Gillespie, Megan E.L. Brown, Nicola Brennan, Bryan Burford, Gillian Vance

Peninsula Medical School

Background The healthcare workforce is in crisis. Despite a competitive selection process, a substantial number of doctors leave specialty training (ST) programmes prematurely. This attrition causes increased costs for the National Health Service, exacerbates workforce shortages and threatens quality and safety of care. It also increases pressure on trainees who remain, further compounding the risk of attrition. There is an urgent need to understand why doctors leave ST in order to find ways to maintain the training pipeline from ST to consultant. Objectives We aimed to understand what is known about why doctors choose to leave ST programmes in secondary …

Gamifying Anatomy Outreach: An Underexplored Opportunity, Mikaela L. Stiver, Aamna Naveed, John Chilton, Siobhan M. Moyes

Peninsula Medical School

This article explores the underutilized potential of incorporating gamified approaches into anatomy outreach initiatives. While gamification and game-based learning approaches have been widely adopted in formal educational settings, there is a surprising lack of research on their application for community-based public engagement with anatomy. We emphasize the importance of involving community partners from the outset to co-design gamified outreach activities. A collaborative approach tailors the final products to the needs, preferences, and resources of the target audiences. By actively involving end users, co-design fosters a sense of ownership, relevance, and long-term sustainability for the educational resources. This article also presents …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The European Union's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, outlined in the European Green Deal, is supported by numerous studies providing insights into pathways and emission reduction strategies in the energy sectors. However, model comparisons of such pathways are less common due to the complex nature of climate and energy modelling. Our study brings together integrated assessment models and energy system models under a common framework to develop EU policy scenarios: a Current Trends scenario reflecting existing policies and trends and a Climate Neutrality scenario aligned with the EU's emission reduction target. Both scenarios project reduced final energy consumption …

Wood density is a critical control on tree biomass, so poor understanding of its spatial variation can lead to large and systematic errors in forest biomass estimates and carbon maps. The need to understand how and why wood density varies is especially critical in tropical America where forests have exceptional species diversity and spatial turnover in composition. As tree identity and forest composition are challenging to estimate remotely, ground surveys are essential to know the wood density of trees, whether measured directly or inferred from their identity. Here, we assemble an extensive dataset of variation in wood density across the …

Understanding the capacity of forests to adapt to climate change is of pivotal importance for conservation science, yet this is still widely unknown. This knowledge gap is particularly acute in high-biodiversity tropical forests. Here, we examined how tropical forests of the Americas have shifted community trait composition in recent decades as a response to changes in climate. Based on historical trait-climate relationships, we found that, overall, the studied functional traits show shifts of less than 8% of what would be expected given the observed changes in climate. However, the recruit assemblage shows shifts of 21% relative to climate change expectation. …

Assessing The Impact Of Historic Mining On The Geochemistry Of Sediments In The Camel Estuary, Cornwall, U.K., Gregory Price, Matthew Cleave

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This investigation focusses on the geochemical properties of surficial sediments in the Camel Estuary, Cornwall, UK. Thegeochemistry of the samples were determined by XRF and data for Sn, As, Cu, Pb and Zn are presented. The data for Pb, Zn andAs shows a down estuary reduction, probably resulting from a combination of increasing distance from a presumed metalliferousmining source and mixing with marine sediments. The highest concentrations for As (48 ppm) and Zn (304 ppm) exceedsediment quality guidelines. Cu and Pb values are below the sediment quality guidelines. Although elevated Sn concentrations areseen in the middle part of the estuary, …

High Speed 2—the planned new railway from London to the north of England—is one of the largest and most controversial public sector investment projects Britain has attempted in decades. Much has been written about the huge cost overruns that the project has suffered, and why this led to the eventual cancellation of the line beyond its first phase now under construction. In this article, we explore two under-appreciated aspects of this story: first, the (unintended) consequences of those forms of professional expertise privileged by decision making machinery, and second how the politics of charisma are essential in understanding how the …

Crowdsourced temperature data from citizen weather stations (CWS) in urban area offer valuable insights into intra-urban temperature distribution but are often challenged by a significant number of missing values. Existing gap-filling methods, typically effective for random gaps and low missing rates, are inadequate for the continuous gaps and high missing rates common in CWS recordings. This study introduces a novel data-driven approach to fill these gaps by modelling relationships between CWS data and official weather station (OWS) records during periods of data availability. We evaluate various feature sets and data-driven algorithms, including Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Random Forest (RF), and …

The Lower Cretaceous succession in Svalbard contains numerous glendonites, pseudomorphs after the cold-water carbonate mineral ikaite, which have been used in conjunction with other evidence to argue for episodic global cooling punctuating the greenhouse climates of the Early Cretaceous. Recent fieldwork in central Spitsbergen has recovered giant bladed glendonites of up to half a metre long, the largest ever recorded in a Lower Cretaceous site, and comparable in size to outlier glendonites found in similar-aged strata of the Sverdrup Basin in Arctic Canada. Unlike the rosette to pineapple-like morphologies seen in some of the largest Canadian Arctic specimens, the new …

Chinese people are experiencing phthalate exposure risks. However, temporal and regional phthalate internal exposure variations amongst Chinese have not been established. To address this gap, we integrated our 69 adult participants' bio-monitored urinary phthalate metabolite (UPM) concentration data by high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry in Xi'an and Nanjing and the data from 35 literature (total sample size: 18768). Then, we analyzed China's temporal and spatial variations of adult UPM levels from 2005 to 2020 based on multi statistical methods. The results showed that the sum of eight UPM concentrations (i.e., monomethyl phthalate (MMP), mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), mono-n-butyl phthalate (MNBP), …
