The cropland productivity gap between Africa and the rest of the world is widening. Fortunately, increasing farmers’ access to useful agricultural information reduces the costs of searching for information, thereby leading to higher agricultural productivity and sustainability. This study investigates the association between the adoption of mobile phones to collect agricultural information and farmers’ technical efficiency (TE) in Zambia. Different from previous studies, we focus on the actual use of mobile phones by farmers rather than mere ownership. Farmers were selected using a two-stage sampling procedure, and the Cobb-Douglas (CD) production function is adopted to estimate the association using two …

How Do Some Primary Schools In England Organise And Implement The Broader Curriculum?, K Pratt, R Atkinson
Plymouth Institute of Education
We are concerned by evidence of ‘curriculum narrowing’ in English primary schools. Inspection reports shed little light on the current situation, so we conducted a small qualitative study exploring breadth of curriculum provision. Eight teacher interviewees described eight different ways of organising and implementing the curriculum. While English and mathematics dominated many conversations, everyone expressed the importance of a broader curriculum and in some schools an engaging and genuinely broad curriculum is apparently alive and well. Assumptions about how best to teach English and mathematics may be one factor affecting curriculum breadth: in-depth case studies are suggested to examine this.

The Importance Of Information Sharing In The Creation And Enforcement Of Maritime Cybersecurity Regulation, R Hopcraft
The Importance Of Information Sharing In The Creation And Enforcement Of Maritime Cybersecurity Regulation, R Hopcraft
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The international community’s response to Somalian piracy, shows how the maritime sector relies upon its community to share information about the threats it faces. The ratification of the Djibouti Code of Conduct, by the IMO, provides both training and information sharing centres to the East coast of Africa. NATO, through Operation Ocean Shield, provides a military platform to share information about the security of the region. These examples exemplify the importance of information sharing as a way to effectively manage risks in the maritime sector. This paper argues that for effective and enforceable maritime cybersecurity regulation to be created and …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Information on the distribution and speciation of trace metals is of critical importance for our ability to interpret the links between the bioavailability and uptake of an element, and its biogeochemical cycle in coastal environments. Within the framework of the European Project “In-situ automated Monitoring of Trace metal speciation in Estuaries and Coastal zones in relation with the biogeochemical processes (IMTEC)”, the chemical speciation of Cd, Pb and Cu was carried out along the Po River plume in the period 27 October – 2 November 2002. During the cruise, five Voltammetric In-situ Profiling systems and one Multi Physical Chemical Profiler, …

Disordered Intestinal Microbes Are Associated With The Activity Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Y Li, H Wang, X Li, H Li, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Intestinal dysbiosis is implicated in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). However, the evidence of gut microbiome changes in SLE is limited, and the association of changed gut microbiome with the activity of SLE, as well as its functional relevance with SLE still remains unknown. Here, we sequenced 16S rRNA amplicon on fecal samples from 40 SLE patients (19 active patients, 21 remissive patients), 20 disease controls (Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients), and 22 healthy controls (HCs), and investigated the association of functional categories with taxonomic composition by Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt). We demonstrated SLE patients, particularly …

Palaeoenvironmental And Tectonic Significance Of Miocene Lacustrine And Palustrine Carbonates (Aït Kandoula Formation) In The Ouarzazate Foreland Basin, Morocco, Sarah J. Boulton, Justin H. Vandevelde, Stephen T. Grimes
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Ouarzazate Basin is the southern foreland basin to the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The sedimentary fill records a sequence dating from the Eocene to Pleistocene that records the interplay between tectonics and climate. This study presents the first stable isotope and facies analyses of the Middle to Late Miocene Aït Ibrirn lacustrine Member (Aït Kandoula Formation). These data test whether the basin was internally draining and enable the development of palaeoenvironmental models for the Middle to Late Miocene. Five sedimentary facies of lacustrine and palustrine limestones are interbeddded with extensive sequences of palaeosols and fluvial sandstones and conglomerates, …

An Ecological Partition Of The Atlantic Ocean And Its Adjacent Seas, G Beaugrand, M Edwards, P Hélaouët
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
In the past, partitions of the global ocean have been commonly carried out using relatively few environmental or biological variables. Although such partitions are undoubtedly useful on a global scale, we show that, at a basin scale, the use of a large number of biological variables greatly improves the accuracy of a partition. We first determined pelagic habitats using a set of selected environmental variables such as temperature, bathymetry, light at the seabed, sea ice concentration, current velocity and salinity. We then partitioned the North Atlantic Ocean and its adjacent seas at spatial resolutions of 2° latitude × 2° longitude …

Morphometric Characteristics Of Alluvial Fans In Southern Turkey: Implications For Fault Activity In The Anatolia, Arabia, Africa Triple Junction Region., A Karatas, S Boulton
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Although, there are numerous studies investigating the boundary between the Anatolian, African and Arabian plates, there are still no definitive results on this topic. Continuing intense tectonic deformation in the area has caused tectonic lines composed of various types of faults to interact and it is necessary to accurately identify the plate borders in the convergence area which is globally and regionally important. Therefore, the impact of tectonic deformation on the current alluvial fans was measured through morphometric analysis methods such as concavity index, best fitted ellipse and sinuosity index to define the relationship between fault lines by presenting their …

Urban Blue: A Global Analysis Of The Factors Shaping People's Perceptions Of The Marine Environment And Ecological Engineering In Harbours., Ema Strain, Ka Alexander, S Kienker, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine harbours are the focus of a diverse range of activities and subject to multiple anthropogenically induced pressures. Support for environmental management options aimed at improving degraded harbours depends on understanding the factors which influence people's perceptions of harbour environments. We used an online survey, across 12 harbours, to assess sources of variation people's perceptions of harbour health and ecological engineering. We tested the hypotheses: 1) people living near impacted harbours would consider their environment to be more unhealthy and degraded, be more concerned about the environment and supportive of and willing to pay for ecological engineering relative to those …

© 2019 In some previous studies, the ratio between a di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipid termed IPSO 25 and a structurally related tri-unsaturated counterpart (HBI III) (viz. IPSO 25 /HBI III) has been used as a proxy measure of variable sea ice cover in the Antarctic owing to their production by certain sea ice algae and open water diatoms, respectively. To investigate this further, we quantified selected lipids and their photo- and autoxidation products in samples of suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected at different water depths in the polynya region west of the Dalton Iceberg Tongue (East Antarctica). Cadmium Pigments In Consumer Products And Their Health Risks, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that has been increasingly regulated over the past few decades. The main exposure routes for the general public are the consumption of certain foods and the inhalation of cigarette smoke. However, additional exposure may occur through the current and historical use of the metal in consumer products. In this paper, the uses of Cd in consumer goods are reviewed, with the focus on brightly-coloured Cd sulphide and sulphoselenide pigments, and measurements of Cd in historical and contemporary products ascertained by XRF are reported. Cadmium is encountered across a wide range …

How Inclusion Became Exclusion: Policy, Teachers And Inclusive Education, Elizabeth J. Done, Mandy J. Andrews
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
It is almost two decades since a concept of inclusion as selective segregation was proposed as an alternative to the concept of full inclusion and inclusive education was reconfigured as providing children with varied educational settings in order to meet their needs. A version of this model of inclusive education subsequently gained political traction in England where the issue of segregated or mainstream provision is now constructed as a matter of parental choice and child voice. Meanwhile, the implications of this latest model of inclusive education for teachers and schools in a rapidly changing wider educational landscape have largely been …
