Durum Wheat Quality I: Some Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Syrian Durum Wheat Genotypes, Gh El-Khayat, A Samaan, Fa Manthey, Mp Fuller, Cs Brennan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Some physical and chemical characteristics of nine Syrian durum wheat genotypes were determined in order to investigate the relationships among individual kernel components and kernel quality. All genotypes were grown on fully irrigated plots in Syria. Test weight, 1000-kernel weight, kernel size distribution, hardness and semolina extraction rates were determined along with the chemical characteristics of the kernel (ash, moisture, protein, wet gluten, starch content and falling number). All tested genotypes had high test weight (83.1–85.9 kg hl−1) and 1000-kernel weight (42.5–55.5 g) indicating high milling yield potential. Additionally, all the wheat genotypes demonstrated high falling numbers (433–597 s). Correlation …

Durum Wheat Quality: Ii. The Relationship Of Kernel Physicochemical Composition To Semolina Quality And End Product Utilisation, J Samaan, Gh El-Khayat, Fa Manthey, Mp Fuller, Cs Brennan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Kernel quality characteristics, semolina milling potential, dough rheology and pasta making properties of kernels from nine fully irrigated Syrian durum wheat genotypes were observed. Protein content of the kernels exerted a significant affect on the physical characteristics hardness and the degree of kernel vitreousness, both of which were highly correlated with superior end‐use product. Gluten composition of semolina appeared as significant as overall protein content in determining the optimum end‐use product cooking quality (cooking time and pasta texture). The final viscosity of durum flour exhibited positive correlations with semolina recovery, protein content, gluten content, vitreousness, the optimum‐cooking time of pasta …
Characterisation Of Algal Derived Organic Nitrogen, Phillippa Kate Curtis-Jackson
Characterisation Of Algal Derived Organic Nitrogen, Phillippa Kate Curtis-Jackson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The molecular level characterisation of compounds comprising the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) pool is an important task for chemical oceanographers wishing to understand its role in the marine N cycle. Low DON concentrations, problems with saline matrices and a lack of pre-concentration methods have all contributed to DON being ignored and disregarded, until recently. Sub units of DON have been analysed as bulk parameters within which the low molecular weight (LMW; < 1,500 Da) fraction has been proposed to drive regenerated production within the oceans. The largest producers of these compounds are phytoplankton. Dissolved combined amino acids (DCAAs) are proposed to be the largest identifiable component of the LMW fraction. Peptides were chosen as the starting point for this study on DON characterisation, due to their unrivalled detection when analysed via liquid chromatography/ mass spectrometry (LC/MS). A method was developed for the characterisation of low molecular weight peptides, released either actively or passively from the axenically-cultured phytoplankton Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Methods for the separation (high performance liquid chromatography; HPLC), detection (mass spectrometric; MS), de-salination and pre-concentration (solid phase extraction; SPE), of analytes present in the culture water sampled during the period of maximum DON, were developed. The successful chromatographic separation of LMW peptides was achieved using a Phenomenex® Gemini Gig column in conjunction with mobile phases of acidified MeOH and water. The SPE method was developed on a Hamilton PRP-1 column containing a polystyrene divinylbenzene stationary phase (PSDVB). During the extraction process the increased hydrophobicity of the PS-DVB phase was predicted to yield increased recoveries of peptides, when compared to analogous d g phase cartridges. The method was transferred to extraction cartridges (500 mg, StrataX). Further investigations were then carried out into the affects of salt and dissolved organic matter on the extraction process. Samples were prepared by applying the extraction method to 1 L supernatants of culture water samples. The HPLC protocol was used to separate the components of the complex sample prior to data acquisition in both full MS mode and in the data dependent mode (DDMS). Mass spectra and chromatograms of ions unique to the cultured waters were identified. Further instrument manipulation allowed interfering ions to be diverted away from the mass analyser and consequently multistage mass spectrometry (MS²) to be carried out on unique ions that exceeded the threshold intensity of 1 x 105. Unique ions identified in the axenic cultures were two amino acids TYR and a modified structure isomerically/isobarically related to TYR. Seven peptides were partially sequenced. These were H-(VAL, THR, Xxx)-OH, H-(GLN/LYS, ALA, ASN, Xxx)-OH, H-(ASN, ALA, GLU, Xxx)-OH, H-(VAL, GLU, Xxx)-OH, H-(SER, HIS, Xxx)-OH, H- (PRO, XLE,HIS, GLN/LYS, GLY, Xxx)-OH and H-(Xxx, XLE, GLN/LYS, XLE, GLU)- OH. One whole peptide was tentatively proposed as H-TRP-PHE-OH. A significant loss of data was observed between the unique peptide ions identified in the MS analysis and the ions that underwent CID during the DDMS analysis, because they were below the threshold ion count or co-eluted with a more dominant ion. The method development carried out through this study has enabled the successful analysis of samples previously considered incompatible with LC/MS instrumentation. The method can be applied to all aquatic environment samples for both contaminant removal and preconcentration requirements and can be seen as an initial step from which many different avenues of future work may be explored.

Fish Landings, Discards And Benthic Material From Demersal Trawling In The Western English Channel (Ices Viie), Stephen Paul Cotterell
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
This study examined the impact of inshore single boat otter trawling from Newlyn, Looe, Plymouth and Salcombe and pair boat demersal trawling from Looe and Plymouth on the benthic environment off the SW peninsula of the UK between 1998 and 2000. Fish and shellfish species (54 and 11 species respectively) were measured at sea and the non-fish material (124 species) was analysed later. Overall 79.8% of the sample was landed fish and shellfish, 15.8 % was discarded fishes and 4.4 % was invertebrates and other material (by weight). Related information about the substrate and tide were generated from British Geological …
Naphthenic Acids: Synthesis, Characterisation And Factors Influendng Environmental Fate, Benjamin Edward Smith
Naphthenic Acids: Synthesis, Characterisation And Factors Influendng Environmental Fate, Benjamin Edward Smith
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The sustained high price of crude oil is increasing the viability of producing oils and tarry bitumens which have high acid contents and which would have been uneconomical to produce previously. The acidity of these oils is due to the presence of a class of compounds known as Naphthenic Acids (NAs) which are thought to arise from the biodegradation of some of the crude oil hydrocarbons. Some oils contain as much as 3% by weight NAs. The acids cause engineering and production difficulties through corrosion of refinery plant and deposition as salts in pipelines. NAs also cause environmental problems because …
Understanding Of The Variability Of Phytoplankton Ecosystem Function Properties: A Synergistic Use Of Remote Sensing And In Situ Data, Dionysios Raitsos-Exarchopoulos
Understanding Of The Variability Of Phytoplankton Ecosystem Function Properties: A Synergistic Use Of Remote Sensing And In Situ Data, Dionysios Raitsos-Exarchopoulos
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The majority of the earth's surface (-71%) is covered by the aquatic environment where 97% of that is the oceanic regime. Almost every part of the aquatic regime is dominated by microscopic plants called phytoplankton. Being at the bottom of the food chain, these ecological drivers influence the earth's climate system as well as the biodiversity trends of other organisms such as zooplankton, fish, sea birds and marine mammals. The aim of this research was to understand the ecology of phytoplankton and assess which environmental, physical, biological, and spatiotemporal factors influence their distribution and abundance. Using this information a knowledge-based …
Enhanced Soil Structuring Beneath White Clover And Its Impact On Nutrient Transport, Deborah Anne Lydia Holtham
Enhanced Soil Structuring Beneath White Clover And Its Impact On Nutrient Transport, Deborah Anne Lydia Holtham
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Previous work at IGER has revealed that soil structural differentiation under white clover is phenomenally rapid and enhanced when compared with ryegrass. White clover is one of the most nutritious and widely distributed forage legumes. Its use is advocated in sustainable systems of livestock production because of its ability to acquire atmospheric N through biological fixation in the root nodules. It thus provides an economically viable alternative to the N-demanding conventional system, and a possible solution to reduce the environmental impacts of nitrate leaching from agricultural land. There are, however, potentially negative impacts associated with improving soil aggregation through the …
Flow Injection Techniques For Investigating The Biogeochemistry Of Nutrients In Natural Waters, Omaka Ndukaku Omaka
Flow Injection Techniques For Investigating The Biogeochemistry Of Nutrients In Natural Waters, Omaka Ndukaku Omaka
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
This thesis describes the development of robust flow injection (FI) techniques for the determination of nutrients, with a focus on phosphorus species, in natural waters. Chapter one presents a general overview of nutrients (P, N and Si) and their aquatic biogeochemistry and analytical methods for nutrient determinations in natural waters. Chapter Two reports a four channel Fl manifold incorporating a thiosulphate stream for on-line masking of arsenate, which is potentially a major interferent in the determination of low concentrations of phosphate in natural waters. The method is suitable for the determination of filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) in anthropogenically impacted waters …
Foraminiferal And Stable Isotope Investigation Of The Cenomanian-Turonian Extinction And Oceanic Anoxic Event, Jodie Fisher
Foraminiferal And Stable Isotope Investigation Of The Cenomanian-Turonian Extinction And Oceanic Anoxic Event, Jodie Fisher
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Cretaceous was a time of significant global change, particularly around the Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary (CTB) (93.5 Ma). The mid-Cretaceous is considered to mark a period of intense global warming related to widespread tectonic activity, leading to periods of high sea level and no polar ice. This had great effects on the ocean's structure, chemistry and circulation, and led to both extinction and diversification of biota. At the time of the CTB a number of events occurred. Particularly well researched is the oceanic anoxic event (OAE 2) and the organic-rich black shales deposited during this interval. Associated with these organic-rich sediments …
Irish Sea : A Socio-Ecological System, Karen Bowler
Irish Sea : A Socio-Ecological System, Karen Bowler
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Recent research has highlighted the need to look beyond the coastal zone and adopt an ecosystem-based approach to sustainable use and conservation in marine management. At the same time there has been a growing recognition that ecosystem management involves coupled, complex socio-ecological systems which are inherently unpredictable due to the non-linear nature of their construction. The diverse social activities and natural processes involved in such an approach requires the inclusion of multiple disciplines which presently have very limited dialogues. It is apparent that there is an urgent need for new, interdisciplinary, methods with which to address management holistically and under …
Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery
Monitoring Peatland Damage And Restoration Using Testate Amoebae As Indicator Organisms, Emma Jane Vickery
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
This thesis has examined the response of testate amoebae communities to restoration at three peatland sites in the UK. It builds upon the use of testate amoebae analysis as a palaeoenvironmental tool by exploring the hypothesis that testate amoebae respond to hydrological conditions in restored mires. Previous research has found that testate amoebae act as good proxies for hydrological condition of intact mires and past conditions but little has been done on their reaction to conditions at damaged sites in the UK. The research aimed to further the understanding of testate amoebae ecology including seasonal variability of communities, a poorly …
Investigation Of The Joint Probability Of Waves And High Sea Levels Along The Cumbrian Coastline, Dominic Paul Hames
Investigation Of The Joint Probability Of Waves And High Sea Levels Along The Cumbrian Coastline, Dominic Paul Hames
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The use of joint probability techniques for wave heights and sea levels to estimate potential damage and overtopping of flood defences is of vital importance in coastal defence work. Without the use of joint probability techniques, confidence in the appropriate design conditions are poor, and defences could be built to an incorrect design standard. This has the potential effect of a coastal or estuary scheme being under-designed, and therefore not suitable for the purpose it was built for or over-designed, and therefore built to a much greater cost than required. With no research having considered the joint probability relationship between …

European Integration And European Identity : Case Study : The European Dimension In Secondary Schooling, Sandra Barkhof
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis explores some of the issues concerning the concept of European identity. In particular, the aim is to assess how far school education is a suitable method to foster a European identity and support for European integration. In this context, the thesis aims to investigate whether the historic and more recent political and national developments in England and Germany have resulted in different attitudes to European integration, European identity and subsequently to a European dimension in education. The analysis also compares the general attitude towards national and European identity and European integration in England and Germany and assesses if …
Using Organisational Learning Theory As A Means Of Mobilising Knowledge Resources In The Control Of Infection, Andy Nichols
Using Organisational Learning Theory As A Means Of Mobilising Knowledge Resources In The Control Of Infection, Andy Nichols
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This research investigates learning and infection control knowledge within hospitals in the United Kingdom (UK). Fundamental infection control practices are not always carried out by clinical staff caring for patients, as a result infections are transmitted (Pittet et al 2000). Failure to carry out infection control practices may reflect a division between the espoused and actual practice of clinicians (Huzzard and Ostergren 2002). This division may be contributed to by infection control teams and educationalists relying on classroom based, pedagogic teaching and failing to investigate the value of other learning theories (Courtney 1998). This study is based upon an investigation …
Automatism And Art Practice, Anne Martin
Automatism And Art Practice, Anne Martin
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The research project is to develop an understanding of the use of automatism in the practice of art derived from an interrelationship between the material process of art and critical text. As these practices converge in their vocabularies of the psychic and the somatic, they formulate a discourse of interpretation. The critical textual inquiry has identified an expanded language of interpretation for automatism within the vocabularies of three particular areas of investigation in, I. Psychoanalysis, 2. Phenomenology and certain currents of thought in Existentialism, and in 3. The theory and criticism of art. I have laid down an account of …
An Investigation Into The Survival Of Medieval Plaster In Dorset Churches, Bruce Induni
An Investigation Into The Survival Of Medieval Plaster In Dorset Churches, Bruce Induni
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
It is a widely held view that most internal church decoration, including plaster, was removed as part of the unprecedented campaign of restoration undertaken by the Church of England during the second half of the nineteenth century. This thesis seeks to test this view by quantifying the extent of medieval plaster surviving in Dorset churches, and setting this survival in an appropriate historical, technical and cultural context. Literature relating to church plaster on both a national and local level has been reviewed and correlated with the results of the survey and also used to explore cultural reasons for the destruction …
The Navy As The Ultimate Guarantor Of Freedom In 1940?, Anthony John Cumming
The Navy As The Ultimate Guarantor Of Freedom In 1940?, Anthony John Cumming
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The widely held public view that Britain was saved from invasion during 1940 because the RAF denied the Luftwaffe control of the air is challenged here. Although the heroism of `the few' is not in question, the ability of Fighter Command to act as a serious physical barrier to German plans is refuted with the Luftwaffe holding the initiative between 24 August and 6 September and its ability to bomb Britain by night for months virtually unopposed. Archival and other evidence show that even without adequate fighter cover, the Royal Navy retained considerable potential to resist German air attacks on …
An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins
An Enquiry Into Fully Lived Moments, Philip Hawkins
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The thesis explores facets of human agency and fully lived moments in the Cobra group, the ideas of Henri Lefebvre, and the ideas of Victor Burgin and psychoanalysis. Connective elements, and their relevance or not, through different disciplines, are a central part of its thinking. To this end some connections are found, some speculative connections are tracked, and there are some ideas that don't connect, yet come close to doing so but which become valuable for the examination of productive tensions and excesses about the lived in a cross-disciplinary enquiry. To begin with, an original set of historical and thematic …

Liberty Horses (A Novel): Narrative And Cultural Analysis In Postmodern English And American Texts, David James Humphrey
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis comprises an original work of fiction, entitled Liberty Horses, and a commentary which explores and compares postmodern English and American fiction, locating my own creative writing practice in that field of contemporary writing. My original work of fiction, Liberty Horses, is divided into two parts, being `Part One: Liberty Horses' and `Part Two: Dreamland'. The critical section of this thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One, `American Postmodernism', shows how American writers, such as Richard Brautigan, William Gaddis and Don DeLillo, continually re-interpreted American fiction in regard to its Anglo-American tradition and explored the nature of Consumerism …
Sustainable Development : The Reflexive Governance Of Risk, Gregory John Borne
Sustainable Development : The Reflexive Governance Of Risk, Gregory John Borne
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
In the face of increase global environmental phenomena such as global warming, social, political and knowledge structures are being reformulated in order to better accommodate these events into governance frameworks. For Ulrich Beck, increased risk has created a World Risk Society which is defined by a state of 'reflexive' modernity (RM) where the central tenets of modernity are re-examined and current developmental patterns are drawn into question. In political and social discourse increased risk has created the need to achieve a sustainable development (SD). In light of criticisms that Beck makes broad and unsubstantiated theoretical assertions, this thesis examines the …
Reading Neuroscience: Ventriloquism As A Metaphor For Multiple Readings Of Self, David Evans
Reading Neuroscience: Ventriloquism As A Metaphor For Multiple Readings Of Self, David Evans
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis argues that the consensus models of self forwarded and upheld in the fields of discourse most concerned with its description, indicate a process of ventriloquism where agency slips between dual poles of body and mind and cannot be tracked to a hiding place. Just as with ventriloquism, in these models of self it is unclear who is doing the 'talking', and the skill of performance would seem to make the distinction almost redundant. The self seems a complicity of often conflicting agents when analysed as its constituent parts, and not there at all when viewed as a whole. …
Rethinking Absence: Art Practice And The Critical Metaphysics Of Jacques Derrida And Jacques Lacan, Karen Georgette Roulstone
Rethinking Absence: Art Practice And The Critical Metaphysics Of Jacques Derrida And Jacques Lacan, Karen Georgette Roulstone
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The methodology aims to demonstrate that absence is not reducible to one approach or another but plays on the incommensurabilities, commensurabilities and gaps between the different concepts presented. The 'motions of absence', which are textual insertions interspersed between the sections, directly articulate the methodology of the thesis by responding to and exploring the thinking in each section. The methodology therefore both produces and addresses the tensions and gaps available in visual and theoretical discourses to demonstrate absence. lt thereby allows for the possibility of a re-inscription of signification for absence to occur.

Articulations Of Equity: Practice, Complexity And Power In Facilitated Art Projects, Gill Claire Melling
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This is a practice-based research project which analysis how democracy and facilitation are articulated within two different social contexts. The purpose of this research is to make apparent, through two facilitated art projects- the Elder Flowers project and the Exwick Image Project - the contingency of meanings and methods of making democratic choice with participants. The argument is that my methods of facilitation, which embrace social and cognitive difference by 'attending to' (that is, using methods of empathic listening and responsive action), their outcomes and meanings are contingent to each specific interaction. These acts of creative facilitation ask new questions …

Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler
Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler
Plymouth Business School Theses
This research project looks at professional football sponsorship from three different perspectives: the clubs' perspective (sponsorship as an income stream for professional football clubs), the sponsors' perspective (sponsorship as a marketing tool for companies), and a joint perspective (sponsorship as an inter-organisational relationship between professional football clubs and their sponsors). The English Premier League and the German Bundesliga serve as the subject of research owing to their extraordinarily sound reputation in commercial terms. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods was used in order to answer the research questions which derived from an extensive literature review. First, qualitative in-depth …
Interactive Technologies For The Public Sphere Toward A Theory Of Critical Creative Technology, Pamela Lynnette Jennings
Interactive Technologies For The Public Sphere Toward A Theory Of Critical Creative Technology, Pamela Lynnette Jennings
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Digital media cultural practices continue to address the social, cultural and aesthetic contexts of the global information economy, perhaps better called ecology, by inventing new methods and genres that encourage interactive engagement, collaboration, exploration and learning. The theoretical framework for creative critical technology evolved from the confluence of the arts, human computer interaction, and critical theories of technology. Molding this nascent theoretical framework from these seemingly disparate disciplines was a reflexive process where the influence of each component on each other spiraled into the theory and practice as illustrated through the Constructed Narratives project. Research that evolves from an arts …
