The Influence Of Teacher-Initiated Reminders On The Attainment Of Students' Aerobic Fitness Goals, Ross Chakrain, Jennifer J. Waldron

Faculty Publications

Goal setting in the physical education classroom can be a successful technique to enhance motivation, increase effort, and improve performance. A critical component of effective goal setting is providing feedback. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of teacher-initiated reminders of the goal on the attainment of self-set aerobic goals in physical education classes. This study was quasi-experimental in nature and used a nonrandomized pretest-posttest, control group design to carry out the procedures. Participants were from two fifth grade classes: one class was designated the experimental group (n = 15) and the other was the …

The Chains Of Hidden And Invisible Power: An Understanding Imperative For Societal Transformation, Leanne Baker Hotek May 2011

The Chains Of Hidden And Invisible Power: An Understanding Imperative For Societal Transformation, Leanne Baker Hotek

Honors Program Theses

This thesis addresses the hidden and invisible aspects of power in an effort to understand the effects these types of power have on the individuals who are unaware of their presence. It then questions if this power is hidden and invisible, how is effective resistance possible? I focus on the research and conceptions of a few political theorists including Steven Lukes, John Gaventa, and Michel Foucault that form the basis for much of the work on power. I then analyze and critique these previous works in order to form a new argument and suggestions for the recognition and possible resistance …

Health Reform: The Effects Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act On Iowa's Critical Access Hospitals, Brittany D. Fett May 2011

Health Reform: The Effects Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act On Iowa's Critical Access Hospitals, Brittany D. Fett

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this research was to examine the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act through an analysis of the bill, investigation of current publications by Iowa health care organizations, and ethnographic interviews to address the guiding research question of how the Affordable Care Act will affect Critical Access Hospitals in Iowa. Through this research, I consider: (1) the nature of a Critical Access Hospital; (2) the management structure of hospitals and health networks statewide; (3) the role Medicare and other forms of insurance play in these facilities and how the ACA will change that role; and (4) the implementation …

Fit Measures Of Work-School Congruence And Individual Outcomes, Kimberly E. Kluesner May 2011

Fit Measures Of Work-School Congruence And Individual Outcomes, Kimberly E. Kluesner

Honors Program Theses

Today, full-time college students are working part- or full-time jobs while attending classes. The demands of work, added to the already high demands of college, may result in negative effects on the individual. However, some aspects of working may lead to positive effects. Previous research has largely focused on the effects of job demands on school performance and other outcomes in adolescents. Current research is lacking in studying the effects of working on college students. The purpose of this thesis project was to research workschool congruence (similarities between aspects of a student's college studies and aspects of their employment), and …

An Analysis Of Financial Leverage And The 2007-2009 Financial Crisis, Larissa A. French May 2011

An Analysis Of Financial Leverage And The 2007-2009 Financial Crisis, Larissa A. French

Honors Program Theses

This thesis will analyze the recent financial crisis, attempting to find and explain sources that caused the crisis, which includes monetary excesses, mortgage-backed securities, the August 2007 bank panic, credit default swaps, and other causes. It will link together events and activities to provide a complete picture. Additionally, this thesis will compare financial leverage with Gross Domestic Product to determine if increases in financial leverage predate financial crises. Leverage, by itself, is not enough to cause a recession, as it exists at some level all the time. However, it may be possible that excessive amounts of leverage or increasing leverage …

Formation Of Intercellular Junctions During Secondary Neurulation In The Tail Bud Region Of Developing Chick Embryos, Selena Mae Losee May 2011

Formation Of Intercellular Junctions During Secondary Neurulation In The Tail Bud Region Of Developing Chick Embryos, Selena Mae Losee

Honors Program Theses

During secondary neurulation, the tail bud of the developing chick embryo undergoes a transition from unorganized mesenchymal cells to a structured epithelial tube. Cells undergoing this process must polarize and then assemble specific molecules that allow them to create intercellular junctions. Intercellular junctions contribute to the cells' ability to adhere, communicate with each other, or block the movement of molecules between neighboring cells. Previous studies have suggested cell-to-cell junctions play an important role in cavitation of the tail bud and in organizing the lumina that form. This study aimed to determine if tight junctions and gap junctions develop in this …

Jerry Falwell's Use Of Theological Methodology For Making Political Claims: A Critique, David William Hosack May 2011

Jerry Falwell's Use Of Theological Methodology For Making Political Claims: A Critique, David William Hosack

Honors Program Theses

After a semester of research, I developed five questions to which I wished to find answers: I) What were the specifications of Jerry Falwell's theological methodology? 2) How did Jerry Falwell use this methodology to make political claims? 3) Was Jerry Falwell consistent with this use of theological methodology in politics? 4) Was Falwell's use of theological methodology valid? 5) Was this use of theological methodology congruent with the principles of our Constitution? The first two questions address the background information regarding Jerry Falwell's political and religious action. The final three address the relationship between Falwell's politics and theology, therefore …

The Bass Clarinet: Its History And Role In The Symphony Orchestra, Katlin Macbride May 2011

The Bass Clarinet: Its History And Role In The Symphony Orchestra, Katlin Macbride

Honors Program Theses

This thesis is a three-sectioned guide to the bass clarinet to be used by players starting out their orchestral careers. Research was done to provide insight for the orchestral bass clarinetist about auditions and compositions that have an important bass clarinet part.

The first section focuses on the origins of the bass clarinet. In this section, the reader will learn why it was invented, the difficulties inventors had in creating it, and the first compositions for this instrument. Knowing the structural history of the bass clarinet gives the performer knowledge of the bass clarinets available when a piece was written, …

Corr's College Cooking: Teaching Students How To Cook Healthy Meals On A Budget, Kayla Marie Corr May 2011

Corr's College Cooking: Teaching Students How To Cook Healthy Meals On A Budget, Kayla Marie Corr

Honors Program Theses

A couple years ago, a friend of mine was getting ready to do a semester-long internship halfway across the country. He was very excited about the opportunity and looking forward to all the new experiences that would go along with it, except for one. The biggest concern he had was not knowing how to cook for himself. He was not the only one with this problem either. One study found that 14% of college students surveyed do not know how to cook for themselves (Hertzler and Bruce, 2002). It became my goal to teach my peers how to cook easy, …

Recruitment Of The Latino Population: Marketing Campaign For Hawkeye Community College, Shelly Kuboushek May 2011

Recruitment Of The Latino Population: Marketing Campaign For Hawkeye Community College, Shelly Kuboushek

Honors Program Theses

Hawkeye Community College (commonly referred to as "Hawkeye" in the remainder of this thesis), is located in Waterloo, Iowa, which is in the northeastern county of Black Hawk. Hawkeye had a Fall 2009 enrollment total of 6,343 students. Only 107 of these students were of Latino background, which is about 2% of total enrollment (Hawkeye, 2009). In Spring 2010, this number increased to 127 Latino students out of 6,292 total students; this is notable as in a typical spring semester, the number of students at the college decreases from the fall semester (Hawkeye, 2010). This increase could be a result …

Individual Batting Factors Influencing A Team's Probability Of Winning, David Matthew Rygh May 2011

Individual Batting Factors Influencing A Team's Probability Of Winning, David Matthew Rygh

Honors Program Theses

Current Major League Baseball contracts are increasing rapidly in value. The factors that increase pay are primarily determined by the team owners' desire to win and players' performance. Understanding how an individual player contributes to winning could lead to owners signing players to more appropriate contracts. A statistical analysis, including a logistic regression analysis, was performed. The regression attempts to find how individual batting factors influence winning. The resulting model can be used to predict wins.

Fuga: A Homoiconic Object-Oriented Programming Language, Francisco Mota May 2011

Fuga: A Homoiconic Object-Oriented Programming Language, Francisco Mota

Honors Program Theses

Fuga is a programming language that integrates two different traditions in programming language design: homoiconic programming, and object-oriented programming. Individually, these traditions can aid program construction and reduce the time required to develop a computer application. However, these two traditions have never been combined. This is an unexplored area in programming language design and implementation, so Fuga is the first programming anguage to combine the homoiconic and object-oriented paradigms. Fuga is an attempt to explore this area, and to turn this exploration into a finished product.

This thesis describes the design and implementation process of Fuga, and my reflections on …
