What Should We Flip?, Jerrid Kruse

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Educational fads are nothing new. Renaming or repackaging of old ideas are also not new. Indeed, anyone who has been in education for more than a few years will recognize how the pendulum of educational reform swings back and forth. Unfortunately, although things “change,” the change is not typically accompanied by “improvement” on a grand scale. One current trend is the notion of “flipping” or the “flipped classroom”.

Nature Of Science: Curriculum Unit For The 6th Grade Classroom, Reagan Denise Boeset Jan 2012

Nature Of Science: Curriculum Unit For The 6th Grade Classroom, Reagan Denise Boeset

Graduate Research Papers

Having a basic knowledge of scientific principles is no longer a luxury but, in today's complex world, a necessity. While Americans are holding their own, they are not even close to where they should be says Jon Miller of Michigan State University. Miller (2007) states in Science Daily that only 28% of American adults currently qualify as scientifically literate (as cited in Michigan State University, 2007, para 5). With the pace of technological advancement as well as our increased reliance on technology, there should be no debate over the need for scientific literacy. There is a need for our society …

A Turning Point Analysis Of Stephchildren's Communication With Their Nonresidential Parent's Family, Rebecca Diverniero Jan 2012

A Turning Point Analysis Of Stephchildren's Communication With Their Nonresidential Parent's Family, Rebecca Diverniero

Iowa Journal of Communication

Stepchildren and their nonresidential parent's side of the family (NRPF) may encounter unique challenges in negotiating new questions of family membership as the child transitions into stepfamily life. The researcher conducted turning point interviews with 29 stepchildren to examine how they perceived and described communication surrounding shifting perceptions of family belonging with their NRPF during this transition. Data analysis yielded categories of turning points that made participants feel more like family with their NRPF, less like family with their NRPF, and several that depended on the situation, illustrating that the communication surrounding these events impacted perceptions and response to nonresidential …

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen Jan 2012

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Familial bonds have the potential to satisfy our need for human relationships, but they are also likely to cause us to be both victims and sources of ostracism. Feelings of ostracism likely stem from communicative experiences and may extend to perceptions of family satisfaction. It would seem ostracism mediates the relationship between family communication patterns and family satisfaction. Although the current study did not confirm the proposed model of ostracism, an alternative model is discussed. Further, individuals who are married and have children perceive less ostracism in their families than individuals who are in single and do not have children.

Baloney Or Braunschweiger?: Communicating Cultural Identity In Multigenerational German Immigrant Families, Dena Huisman, Heike Flood Jan 2012

Baloney Or Braunschweiger?: Communicating Cultural Identity In Multigenerational German Immigrant Families, Dena Huisman, Heike Flood

Iowa Journal of Communication

Researchers have examined economic, social, political, and historical implications of immigration throughout U.S. history, but little research has been conducted on everyday communication and the lived experience of immigrant family life in the United States. The current research explores family communication in mid-20th century German immigrant families and their balance between two cultures, demonstrating the complex cultural boundaries between family generations and between families and cultural boundaries themselves.

"With All Due Respect, Mr. President:" A Rhetorical Analysis Of Al Sharpton's Speech Ot The 2004 Democratic National Committee Convention, Jennifer E. Potter Jan 2012

"With All Due Respect, Mr. President:" A Rhetorical Analysis Of Al Sharpton's Speech Ot The 2004 Democratic National Committee Convention, Jennifer E. Potter

Iowa Journal of Communication

On July 23, 2004, President George W Bush spoke to the National Urban League and questioned African Americans' allegiance to the Democratic Party. Two days later, the 2004 DNC convention began and Al Sharpton, previously known as an unbelievable politician, gave a memorable speech responding to the President. This essay explains how Sharpton delivered a speech that appealed to the broader American electorate while still speaking about issues important to the African American community and exposes how Sharpton discussed race without doing so blatantly, all the while answering Bush's questions posed to the Urban League.

The Changing Nature Of The Coffee Shop In The 21st Century: How Productivity Is Supplanting Social Interaction, Benjamin R. Garner Jan 2012

The Changing Nature Of The Coffee Shop In The 21st Century: How Productivity Is Supplanting Social Interaction, Benjamin R. Garner

Iowa Journal of Communication

Historically, coffee shops are social gathering places where people go to get coffee, listen to lectures, converse with others, and maintain personal relationships (Hattox, 1985; Oldenburg, 1999). Today, the coffeehouse/coffee shop scene is quite different. This analysis examines what motivates people to go to a public social place (coffee shops) to participate in private activities such as using laptop computers, studying, or engaging other solitary activities. Results indicate people use coffee shops in a solitary manner to enhance productivity, to leave the house, to study with friends, and to work. Most participants in this study did not go to a …

Professionally Accomplished Women's Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Communication: An Exploratory Study, Teresa M. Scott, Lynne M. Webb, Patricia Amason Jan 2012

Professionally Accomplished Women's Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Communication: An Exploratory Study, Teresa M. Scott, Lynne M. Webb, Patricia Amason

Iowa Journal of Communication

A survey of 75 professionally accomplished women examined father-daughter communication during daughters' middle-aged years. The daughters' perceptions of relational closeness with their fathers were associated with family communication environment (both conversation and conformity-orientation). Furthermore, daughters' conflict management scores for competing-with-fathers were negatively associated with the daughters' state-communication-apprehension scores. Finally, many non-significant results are inconsistent with results previously obtained with college student samples, perhaps indicating that the influence of father-daughter communication may differ across the lifespan.

Development Of A Soil Carbon Index For Iowa Mineral Soils, M. M. Al-Kaisi, T. E. Fenton, J. G. Guzman, B. R. O'Neal Jan 2012

Development Of A Soil Carbon Index For Iowa Mineral Soils, M. M. Al-Kaisi, T. E. Fenton, J. G. Guzman, B. R. O'Neal

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A carbon index (Cl) is one of many soil quality indicators that depends on organic carbon concentration. One of the values of a soil carbon index is in determining the impact of agriculture practices (i.e., tillage, crop rotation, N management, etc.) on soil organic matter status of mineral soils. Interactions of climate, parent material, topography, time, and organisms including human activities influence soil organic carbon (SOC). This study developed a soil carbon index for mineral soil map units in Iowa using data collected by the Iowa Cooperative Soil Survey Laboratory and the USDA Soil Survey Laboratory for over 2,300 soil …

Older Adults' Social Support Giving And Their Psychological Health: Testing Moderating Effects Of Giving In Familial And Non-Familial Context, K. Hazel Kwon, Shin-Il Moon Jan 2012

Older Adults' Social Support Giving And Their Psychological Health: Testing Moderating Effects Of Giving In Familial And Non-Familial Context, K. Hazel Kwon, Shin-Il Moon

Iowa Journal of Communication

The current study explores the impact of support giving as a moderator between receiving support and older adults' psychological health. The study analyzed the data from the project Changing Lives of Older Couples, including a sample of 1,532 married individuals from Detroit Cosmopolitan areas. The findings suggest that receiving-support have differentiated effects depending on relational types. While giving-support does not show the conditional effect, it plays a moderator in reducing depression and anxiety especially at the low level of received support, suggesting the importance of social integration on older adults' psychological health.
