Timeline Of Creating The Original Performance Work, A Scotch Verdict, Cynthia Goatley, Rebecca Burkhardt Mar 2012

Timeline Of Creating The Original Performance Work, A Scotch Verdict, Cynthia Goatley, Rebecca Burkhardt

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We first conceived the idea of writing a hybrid piece containing elements of opera and musical theatre in 1998. The musical, as we now call it, is based on Lillian Faderman’s Scotch Verdict, which revolves around the true story of Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods who ran a boarding school for girls in 1810 Edinburgh, Scotland. The accusation of one of their students, Jane Cumming, illegitimate grandchild of wealthy and powerful Dame Cumming Gordon, brought ruin upon the school and the schoolmistresses. Jane Cumming had accused the schoolmistresses of committing “unnatural acts” together. This tale told to Dame Gordon …

Gothic Architecture, Geometry, And The Aesthetics Of Transcendence, Robert Bork Mar 2012

Gothic Architecture, Geometry, And The Aesthetics Of Transcendence, Robert Bork

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In these remarks I will discuss Gothic architecture, geometry, and what I call the aesthetics of transcendence. I’ll focus mainly on the design of great buildings like Strasbourg Cathedral, whose spire is the tallest surviving work of the Middle Ages, a 466-foot symphony of intricately carved stone. I also want to talk about how I came to study and admire this material, starting out from a curiously backdoor approach involving the sciences. Ultimately, therefore, I will argue that Gothic architecture can be fruitfully compared to a variety of things, such as fractals, heavy metal guitar music, and dinosaurs. These are …

Implementing Emerging Technologies In Interior Design Education: A Case Study Utilizing Rapid Prototyping, Scott Greenhalgh, Paul Schrueuders Mar 2012

Implementing Emerging Technologies In Interior Design Education: A Case Study Utilizing Rapid Prototyping, Scott Greenhalgh, Paul Schrueuders

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Creating physical models and prototypes has traditionally been a part of various fields of design and design education. These models serve multiple purposes, including providing a demonstrative form of the final project and feedback for revision and improvement within the design process. Models have traditionally been constructed by hand using a variety of materials.

The use of computer-aided design or CAD has changed the design process, as many designers now think through the computer. CAD has been claimed to narrow the gap between representation and building (Ryder, Ion, Green, Harrison, & Wood, 2002). Also known as virtual models, the major …

A Review By Karen Mitchell And Bettina Fabos Of Professing To Learn: Creating Tenured Lives And Careers In The American Research University, By Anna Neumann, Karen Mitchell, Bettina Fabos Mar 2012

A Review By Karen Mitchell And Bettina Fabos Of Professing To Learn: Creating Tenured Lives And Careers In The American Research University, By Anna Neumann, Karen Mitchell, Bettina Fabos

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s plan to solve budget problems by dramatically cutting public education funding has once again sparked heated debate over the figurative and literal “value” of education. As other state governments consider similar proposals, educators feel increased pressure to justify how they go about the important job of teaching. Never before has research on academics been more important, especially in higher education where so little is publicly known about what professors do in their day to day profession. This is true of all ranks of professors within academia, but perhaps most critically of professors with tenure. In Professing …

Translation Into English: Poems By Marie-Léontine Tsibinda, Catherine Macgillivray

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Marie Léontine Tsibinda was born in French Congo in the village of Girard. She later attended school in the capital of Brazzaville, where she went on to university and ultimately received a Master’s degree in English in 1983. In response to the burning down of her house in the context of Congo's civil war in 1997, Tsibinda fled her homeland in 1999; she then spent time in Niger and Benin, eventually settling in Canada in 2001, where she continues to reside.

Art, Science, (R)Evolution, Elizabeth Sutton Mar 2012

Art, Science, (R)Evolution, Elizabeth Sutton

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Art and science traditionally have been separated in the post-Enlightenment academy. However, the divide that occurred in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries artificially separates the continued interrelation of these two domains. The Art Department’s spring 2011 symposium “Arts and Sciences” provided a venue in which the UNI community was invited to consider the relationships between the arts and the sciences. We saw the merging of the two former colleges of Humanities and Fine Arts and Natural Sciences as an opportunity to highlight the permeable boundaries between disciplines. Moreover, we wanted to highlight the achievements of our students and the high …

A Third Way Beyond The Old College Teacher-Scholar Model And The University Researcher Model Of Faculty Excellence, Eugene Rice Mar 2012

A Third Way Beyond The Old College Teacher-Scholar Model And The University Researcher Model Of Faculty Excellence, Eugene Rice

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In this forum, I want us to talk about the models of academic excellence. What makes for good work? What is it that gets rewarded? I’m convinced that if we really take a careful look at American higher education there are only two models that dominate our thinking about academic excellence, and the changing character of faculty work. I also think that we need a third way, which I will discuss after considering the two models that currently dominate.

Revolutions In Time, Space, And Art: Russian Constructivism, Floris Bannister Mar 2012

Revolutions In Time, Space, And Art: Russian Constructivism, Floris Bannister

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

El Lissitzky opened his essay Art and Pangeometry by writing that “in the period between 1918 and 1921, a lot of old rubbish was destroyed.”[1] This quote encapsulates the tumult of the early twentieth-century, when many long-established orders were overturned, not the least of which were both artistic and scientific in nature. Revolutions in the spheres of politics, mathematics, physics, and art combined in the vanguard movement of Russia known as Constructivism. This movement grew in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and thrived in Russia until Stalin took power in 1924. Thereafter, Modernism in general lost …
