Fashioning Race, Class, And Gender: A Critique Of Dior's 2007 "Oriental" Collection, Keeley M. Buehler Hunter Jan 2013

Fashioning Race, Class, And Gender: A Critique Of Dior's 2007 "Oriental" Collection, Keeley M. Buehler Hunter

Iowa Journal of Communication

This project seeks to parse out the connections between consumption and identities by focusing on the effects of the way fashion represents Asian culture and identities, examining how consuming fashion represents, and consequently shapes and limits, Asian-American identities. To this end, the work critically examines Dior's 2007 Spring/Summer fashion collection and the blogger/media conversations that contextualize this collection. The author evaluates the praise and criticisms of this collection with attention to fashion's portrayal of race/ethnicity, class, and gender as viewers consume the product, the art, or the spectacle of fashion and also a culture. The author argues high fashion, as …

The Never-Ending Ethical Dilemma For Photojournalists: A Case Study Of Conflicts Between The Objective Reporter And The "Good Samaritan", Yung Soo Kim, Deborah S. Chung Jan 2013

The Never-Ending Ethical Dilemma For Photojournalists: A Case Study Of Conflicts Between The Objective Reporter And The "Good Samaritan", Yung Soo Kim, Deborah S. Chung

Iowa Journal of Communication

When covering tragedies involving human suffering, photojournalists frequently face serious ethical dilemmas that force them to choose between the position of an objective reporter and a "Good Samaritan." Recent ethical controversies, such as the New York City subway photo case in the New York Post and the domestic violence photo essay published on TIME magazine's website, are only the latest additions to this dilemma. By using the situational ethics approach, this case study examines the controversies in terms of three situational characteristics-the presence of other helpers, the intention of the victim, and the possibility of intervention by the photographer-to assess …

Degradation Of Algal Palynomorphs On 34-Yr-Old Microscope Slides, Lynn A. Brant

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Reexamination of 34-yr-old microscope slides of palynological preparations reveals the loss and degradation of algal palynomorphs, in particular the green alga Pediastrum and the desmid Pleurotaenium. Results from this study suggest that great caution should be used when referring co archived palynological slides.

Temperament, Cynicism, And The Effects Of Advertising On Voters' Evaluation Of Candidates, Jerry L. Allen, Eun-A Park, Danette Lfert Johnson, Joan O'Mara, Kathleen M. Long, Mark Hickson Iii

Iowa Journal of Communication

During the 2008 presidential election, 222 potential young voters (age 18- 24) participated in a study investigating the effects of their self-reported temperament, levels of political cynicism, perceptions of candidates' credibility, attraction, and issue competence on candidate preference before and after viewing television ads for Barack Obama and John McCain. Results indicate the temperament traits of conscientiousness and neuroticism are predictive of voters' political cynicism, perception of candidates' credibility, attraction, issue competence, and likelihood of supporting a particular candidate. In addition to these groundbreaking results, it was confirmed that even short term exposure to political spots produces changes in young …

Parent And Adult-Child Relationships Affected By Alzheimer's Disease, Rachel Woolsey Jan 2013

Parent And Adult-Child Relationships Affected By Alzheimer's Disease, Rachel Woolsey

Iowa Journal of Communication

Alzheimer's disease, a form of dementia, affects nearly one in eight older people in the United States. It takes many people, often family members, to care for an elderly person with this disease. Ten adult children were interviewed about their relationship with their parent affected by Alzheimer's disease. Experiencing role reversals and support from other family members, as well as showing the kinship priority rule, the relationship with their parent changed over the course of the disease. The process of role reversal and the new roles family members take on through the kinship priority rule were examined.

Analyzing Journalistic Approaches Of Supreme Court Nominee Hearings: A Longitundinal Study, Lindsey A. Harvell, Gwendelyn S. Nisben, Glenn J. Hansen Jan 2013

Analyzing Journalistic Approaches Of Supreme Court Nominee Hearings: A Longitundinal Study, Lindsey A. Harvell, Gwendelyn S. Nisben, Glenn J. Hansen

Iowa Journal of Communication

The current study explores how coverage of U.S. Supreme Court nominee hearings has changed during the past three decades. Game framing is argued to be seeping its way from purely political coverage into other types of news coverage. Changes in hearing characteristics were examined across time by examining several newspapers and Supreme Court nominee hearings from William H. Rehnquist through Elena Kagan. Findings suggested coverage of nominee hearings is increasingly game framed, thus nominee hearing news coverage is increasingly presented in terms of political strategy and posturing. Normative implications of game framing of Supreme Court hearings are discussed.

Professional Staffing Levels And Fourth-Grade Student Research In Rural Schools With High-Poverty Levels, Karla Steege Krueger, Jean Donham Jan 2013

Professional Staffing Levels And Fourth-Grade Student Research In Rural Schools With High-Poverty Levels, Karla Steege Krueger, Jean Donham

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Rural schools in high-poverty areas are often understaffed. This descriptive phenomenological study examined fourth-grade state research projects in high- poverty rural Iowa schools to reveal the influence of school librarians’ staffing levels on student learning of research skills. To determine evidence of students’ critical literacy, ethical use of information, content learning, and understanding of the inquiry process, researchers analyzed twenty-four student work samples from eight schools, along with students’ responses to questionnaires and school librarians’ responses to surveys. Six (66 percent) student work samples in higher-staffed schools showed higher critical-literacy scores than those in the five lower-staffed schools. Six (of …
