Reflections On Faculty Participation In University Decision Making, Daniel J. Power Mar 2013

Reflections On Faculty Participation In University Decision Making, Daniel J. Power

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In 1983, when I began my career, a University was a place where professors met students for instruction and research. A University granted degrees upon the recommendation of the faculty to students who had satisfactorily completed courses and met degree requirements established by faculty. Universities had governing boards that ratified strategic administrative and academic decisions. Faculty, especially tenured faculty, had a meaningful role in decisions related to the selection of administrators, hiring and promoting faculty, budgeting, and determination of educational policies. In general, the governance boards deferred to the expertise of faculty and administrators. Academic administrators and many people performing …

The Season Of The Mooc, Justin J. Roberts, Jim O'Loughlin Mar 2013

The Season Of The Mooc, Justin J. Roberts, Jim O'Loughlin

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, first received widespread attention in 2011 when Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig of Stanford University decided to offer a course in artificial intelligence that would be open to anyone who wished to participate in it. With an in-class enrollment of 200, their artificial intelligence class was one of the largest offered at Stanford. Thurn and Norvig prepared to teach a physical class at Stanford for tuition-paying Stanford students, and they opened a parallel and free online version of the course. The MOOC version of the course included lecture videos and online discussion forums, …

Your Evolving Uni Library: Spaces, Sources, And Services For Graduate Research, Chris Neuhaus Mar 2013

Your Evolving Uni Library: Spaces, Sources, And Services For Graduate Research, Chris Neuhaus

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Walk through the University of Northern Iowa’s Rod Library and you will certainly notice the changes. Entire collections have relocated, the Youth Library has been reborn, collaborative workstations are multiplying, and comfortable spaces for reflective study, collaborative research, and small group discussion are spreading throughout the building. With input from students and faculty, Rod Library is undergoing a metamorphosis. Yet only a fraction of this ongoing transformation is visible to the itinerant passerby. Changes are afoot that are redefining research and enhancing what is possible in graduate education.

Women Leaders In The Rwandan Genocide: When Women Choose To Kill, Donna J. Maier Mar 2013

Women Leaders In The Rwandan Genocide: When Women Choose To Kill, Donna J. Maier

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The role of women as perpetrators in the Rwanda Genocide has been documented much more so than that of women in other genocides and crimes against humanity: more than in the holocaust of World War II, than in the massacres of Mayan Guatemala's Indians in 1982, and more even than in the widespread atrocities that accompanied the break-up of the former Yugoslavia which were virtually concurrent with the Rwanda Genocide. It is not entirely clear why this is the case. Testimonies of women perpetrators and victims were collected in the immediate aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide by various human rights …

Teaching, Research And Shared Governance?, Jeffrey L. Funderburk

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

There are many challenges to ‘shared governance’ at institutions of higher learning, including the fact that there is no consensus as to exactly what constitutes effective and appropriate shared governance. The document cited most often in regards to shared governance is the 1966 Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities, jointly formulated by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the American Council on Education (ACE), and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).[i] The document lays out a set of broad principles, without giving specific instructions as to how to implement them.

Mapping Long-Term Spatial Trends Of The Taimyr Wild Reindeer Population, Andrey N. Petrov, Anna V. Pestereva, Leonid A. Kolpashchikov, Vladimir V. Mikhailov Mar 2013

Mapping Long-Term Spatial Trends Of The Taimyr Wild Reindeer Population, Andrey N. Petrov, Anna V. Pestereva, Leonid A. Kolpashchikov, Vladimir V. Mikhailov

Faculty Publications

This report presents preliminary results of mapping and analyzing wild reindeer spatial dynamics in Taimyr, Russia. We collected, spatially referenced, and systematized comprehensive aerial and land survey information spanning from 1969 to 2003, which is the most complete long-term data available about a wild reindeer herd in Eurasia. The report introduces some of the mapping products and presents a summary of our observations on spatiotemporal changes in reindeer distribution and migration. Using these data and new digital products in the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) environment, we were able to observe the long-term shift of the Taimyr Reindeer Herd's summer, winter, …

What Is Shared Governance Anyway?, Greg Scholtz Mar 2013

What Is Shared Governance Anyway?, Greg Scholtz

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Shared governance is an ideal to which many seem eager to express allegiance. In fact, shared governance is invoked almost as frequently by administrators and administrator-dominated organizations such as the regional accrediting commissions as it is by faculty and faculty groups such as the AAUP. As with many catchphrases, however, shared governance apparently means different things to different people.

All too often shared governance is used to convey the idea that a lot of conversation ought to take place within and among various campus groups—board, administration, faculty, staff, students, etc.—before the people in power make the final decision. This conception …

Guide To Selection Of Queer Adolescent Literature For Language Arts Teachers And Librarians, Dwight C. Watson, Terri Lasswell, Stephanie Logan, Yolanda Hood

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article was written based on the belief that if teachers and librarians were aware of criteria that would allow them to select appropriate literature for adolescents that are inclusive of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer, and questioning characters, themes, and plots, then these educators would be bold and resolute in including such literature in their classrooms and libraries. There have been copious articles that discuss the merit of such literature in the classroom and libraries. We will revisit some of those justifications, but our main emphasis of this article is to determine a set of criteria that librarians, teachers, …

The Faculty’S Role In Shared Governance In An Administrative Age, Scott Peters Mar 2013

The Faculty’S Role In Shared Governance In An Administrative Age, Scott Peters

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

As Benjamin Ginsburg and Dan Power describe elsewhere in this forum, changes in higher education are placing new strains on traditional notions of shared governance. The same diffuse, complex forces that are challenging traditional ways of delivering a college education are pushing colleges and universities toward a more administrative model of decision making. The rise of the administrative university also challenges the role of the faculty within traditional shared governance models, which center on shared responsibility and joint action. If the faculty wishes to remain relevant in shared governance systems today, we must find new ways to assert our influence …

Hydroseeding Survey Of Irvm Counties In Iowa, Dave Williams Feb 2013

Hydroseeding Survey Of Irvm Counties In Iowa, Dave Williams

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

This hydroseeding report is based upon detailed telephone surveys of 44 Iowa Integrated Roadside Management Program counties that utilize hydroseeding to seed natives in right-of-ways. The phone survey questionaire encompassed all aspects of county hydroseeding, including questions associated with equipment types, techniques, seeding rates. Respondents were asked about their use of natives and nurse crops, hydroseeding personnel involved in these efforts, types and rates of mulch used, bad hydroseeding experiences and finally, tricks of the trade. This summary report also contains detailed information from 10 counties that were selected for a site visit by UNI staff in July 2012, based …
