The graphic communications industry is far-reaching and touches most people‘s lives on a day-to-day basis. The products affected are as diverse as computers and medical supplies, business cards and billboards, packaging and photos, and a car’s dashboard to the image on a t-shirt. As the current employees are retiring in record numbers, and the technology and business processes in the field are changing at a rapid rate, the need for well-prepared employees is greater than ever. In order to best prepare current students for positions in the field, educators need specific information to guide their curriculum development. This has been …

They, Those, And Other Pronouns Used To Describe Them: A Qualitative Study Of The Lived Experiences Of The African American Girls In The Girls To Women Group, Amber Nicole Boyd Jan 2014

They, Those, And Other Pronouns Used To Describe Them: A Qualitative Study Of The Lived Experiences Of The African American Girls In The Girls To Women Group, Amber Nicole Boyd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

African American girls are more likely to experience social barriers in a society that values White over Black, men over women, and wealth over poverty. They are more likely to encounter race, class, and gender discrimination in classrooms, curriculum, and pedagogy putting them at grave risk of school failure. Notwithstanding the deficit research approach, African American girls are invisible in both social theory and educational research. Their virtual absence from existing research is the catalyst for this autoethnographic study of the lived experiences of African American girls in the Girls to Women group at an urban high school. In this …

If proper verification is neglected, the customer might end up getting an unsafe vehicle which can lead to serious consequences. To make these vehicles safe and …

Calculating Nutrient Loads From Four Tributaries Of The Cedar River In Iowa, Jacob Donaghy Jan 2014

Calculating Nutrient Loads From Four Tributaries Of The Cedar River In Iowa, Jacob Donaghy

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A study was done on four tributaries to the Cedar River to determine nutrient concentrations, loads, and the contribution of each watershed per unit area. The Cedar River watershed is primarily agricultural land and extends from southern Minnesota to southeastern Iowa. Past studies have indicated that this watershed is a major contributor of nitrate to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. This eutrophication is the cause of the hypoxic Gulf. From April 13, 2010-September 21, 2010 samples were taken from four tributaries of the Cedar River. Discharge data were taken from USGS gaging stations along with a method …

Climate Analysis Using Tree-Rings From The Wind River Range, Wyoming, Derek Richards

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study utilizes tree‐rings from the Wind River Range to determine past climates in this region of Wyoming and how they may have been affected by climate oscillations connected to the Pacific Ocean, such as El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The research considers what type(s) of past climatic cycles can be found in a roughly 500‐year series of tree‐rings collected from the Southeast Wind River Range using dendroclimatology and spectral analysis. It includes the reconstructed past temperature and precipitation data and how these compare with other reconstructions near the study area. The tree‐rings were found to …

Creative Heartland: Creative Capital And Knowledge Economy In Micropolitan Midwest, Philip A. Cavin Jan 2014

Creative Heartland: Creative Capital And Knowledge Economy In Micropolitan Midwest, Philip A. Cavin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent regional development studies increasingly focus on creative economies that provide an alternative perspective to regional development in a globalizing world-economy. However, most research in economic geography of creativity and innovation is exclusively concerned with larger metropolitan areas. The lack of attention does not make knowledge-based economy less relevant or creative capital less important in smaller urban regions, where it acts as an agent of economic development and revitalization. This study is the first attempt to use creative capital metrics and a combination of qualitative and qualitative analyses to investigate the creative capital and its economic implications in micropolitan areas …

D-Spaces In Infinite Products Of Ordinals, Duncan Wright Jan 2014

D-Spaces In Infinite Products Of Ordinals, Duncan Wright

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Fleissner and Adrienne Stanley showed that, in finite products of ordinals, the following are equivalent: 1. X is a D-space. 2. X is metacompact. 3. X is metalindel¨of. 4. X does not contain a closed subset which is homeomorphic to a stationary subset of a regular, uncountable cardinal. In this paper we construct a counterexample that shows that this equivalence does not extend to infinite products of ordinals. We also introduce a new property, club-separable, which we show implies D for subsets of ωω1. We hope that club-separable will be able to replace property (4) above in order to …

Violent Video Games And Aggressive Behavior: Mortality Salience And The Hostile Attribution Bias, Paden R. Goldsmith Jan 2014

Violent Video Games And Aggressive Behavior: Mortality Salience And The Hostile Attribution Bias, Paden R. Goldsmith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research indicates that one of the most popular forms of media, violent video games can increase aggressive behavior and cognitions (Anderson & Bushman, 2001). Prior research has examined the effects of these media using the General Aggression Model (GAM; Anderson & Bushman, 2001; Bushman & Anderson, 2002). The current study examines an alternative method by which video games (and other forms of media) can encourage aggressive behaviors, via mortality salience effects. The current study used a 2 (mortality salience vs absence) x 2 (violent video games vs nonviolent video games) experimental design to examine the role of mortality salience and …

Unregulated, Untrained, And Unaware: Restraint And Seclusion Practices In Educational Settings, Daniel E. Zaccaro Jan 2014

Unregulated, Untrained, And Unaware: Restraint And Seclusion Practices In Educational Settings, Daniel E. Zaccaro

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current and historical trends of restraint and timeout use, particularly in school environments, were examined through a review of relevant literature. The use of these techniques has changed over time, and resulting injuries have increased the public’s awareness of their dangers. While some believe that these techniques provide a therapeutic benefit to individuals or are necessary to defuse crisis situations, others argue that the risk of physical and psychological harm usually outweighs any potential benefit. A lack of regulation and training standards has likely led to inconsistent procedures between states, districts, and school buildings. This variability has limited the ability …

Depression In Children And Adolescents: The Role Of School Professionals, Emily Dawn Hoerman Jan 2014

Depression In Children And Adolescents: The Role Of School Professionals, Emily Dawn Hoerman

Depression in children and adolescents is a significant issue for schools. Research has indicated that most students who see mental health professionals do so within the school setting, indicating a need for effective school-based programs to address mental health issues in the schools. The symptoms of depression and short and long term effects are reviewed. The need for, and necessary components of, a comprehensive mental health system in the school setting is discussed.

Understanding The Long-Term Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of The Taimyr Reindeer Herd During The Summer Concentration Period, Matthew D. Cooney Jan 2014

Understanding The Long-Term Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of The Taimyr Reindeer Herd During The Summer Concentration Period, Matthew D. Cooney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was part of a larger research effort devoted to investigation of spatiotemporal patterns and dynamics of the Taimyr Reindeer Herd (TRH) migration under changing climate and environmental conditions. The research aimed to systematize and analyze available historical (archival) data on wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) migration and ecosystems change in the Taimyr Peninsula, Russia. The summer concentration patterns of the TRH as observed from 1969-2009 were investigated through the utilization of existing and innovative spatioanalytic methods and advanced GIS technologies not previously used to examine R. tarandus migration in the Russian Arctic. The project applied and tested the …

Tracking Above- And Below- Ground Seed Persistence And Mortality In A Native Tallgrass Prairie Restoration, Carmen Pellish Jan 2014

Tracking Above- And Below- Ground Seed Persistence And Mortality In A Native Tallgrass Prairie Restoration, Carmen Pellish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The large cost of seed and low seedling establishment rates make restoring native tallgrass prairies expensive and difficult. Tallgrass prairie restorations typically achieve seedling emergence rates of only 10%. This begs the question of what happens to the remaining 90% of seeds that do not emerge as seedlings. This thesis sought to assess or quantify the importance of seed predators and death by microorganisms or to senescence on seed survival and seedling establishment within a newly planted native tallgrass prairie restoration under typical restoration conditions. I hypothesized that small vertebrate seed predators would play be detrimental to overall seedling emergence …
