On Iowa, Relationships, And Communication: A History Of The Field Of Personal Relationships, Steve Duck Jan 2014

On Iowa, Relationships, And Communication: A History Of The Field Of Personal Relationships, Steve Duck

Iowa Journal of Communication

The year is 1973, over forty years ago. [Deep voice intoning] Nobody has ever heard of "relational communication." There is no field of "relationship research." In fact there are only two books with the words ''personal relationships" together in the title in the whole of the social sciences. Some scholars research marriage and family, mostly from a department of Sociology or perhaps Home Economics. Some psychologists have studied attraction and run into storms of criticism about the use of a laboratory method to do so (Byrne, 1971). Not one single article with personal relationships in the title has ever been …

Connecting Visual Communicators With An Auditory World: Exploring Communication Accomodation Processes In D/Deaf-Hearing Interactions, Genelle Timperlake Sanders, Stephanie Rollie Rodriguez

Iowa Journal of Communication

d/Deaf individuals' use of a visual-based language, American Sign Language (ASL), can lead to challenges in communicating and developing relationships with the larger hearing majority. This study uses Communication Accommodation Theory as a framework for exploring d/Deaf individuals' perspectives on communication with hearing individuals and the strategies they use to converge or diverge from hearing individuals during interactions. Through in-depth interviews conducted in ASL, participants were asked to recount experiences of communication interactions with members of the hearing majority and preferred strategies and motivations for convergence or divergence. Results identified convergence as a strategy to indicate interest in communicating with …

Redefining Family: An Analysis Of Adult Donor-Conceived Offspring's Discursive Meaning-Making, Meredith Marko Harrigan, Sarah Dieter, Jenna Leinwohl, Laura Marrin Jan 2014

Redefining Family: An Analysis Of Adult Donor-Conceived Offspring's Discursive Meaning-Making, Meredith Marko Harrigan, Sarah Dieter, Jenna Leinwohl, Laura Marrin

Iowa Journal of Communication

The purpose of this study was to understand the cultural discourses that adult children conceived via anonymous sperm donation draw upon in their meaning-making processes. In-depth interviews with fourteen adult donor-conceived offspring were inductively analyzed for the presence and interplay of discourses. The findings capture the complexity of meaning-making for donor-conceived offspring by detailing the interpenetration of two discourses: nature and nurture. Theoretical implications regarding discourse-dependency and definitions of family are discussed with the goal of providing insight to future researchers.

Co-Rumination With A Friend About A Romantic Relationship: Perception Of Satisfaction And Inequity, Ashley A. Hanna Edwards, Krystyna S. Aune Jan 2014

Co-Rumination With A Friend About A Romantic Relationship: Perception Of Satisfaction And Inequity, Ashley A. Hanna Edwards, Krystyna S. Aune

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study investigates the relationship between co-ruminating about one's romantic relationship with a close friend and friendship satisfaction, romantic relationship satisfaction, and inequity in the romantic relationship. Reasons for co-ruminating with a friend about issues in romantic relationships were reported. Results indicate that co-ruminating about one's romantic relationship with a friend had no significant association with friendship satisfaction. Additionally, this study found that co-ruminating with a friend about a romantic relationship is correlated with higher perceptions of inequity within a romantic relationship and with romantic relationship dissatisfaction. A discussion of implications, limitations, and future directions is offered.

Static Stretching, Soft-Tissue Massage, And Graston Technique On Hamstring Flexibility, Keri Anne Sotak Jan 2014

Static Stretching, Soft-Tissue Massage, And Graston Technique On Hamstring Flexibility, Keri Anne Sotak

Graduate Research Papers

Hamstring muscle flexibility gains are often sought after by the physically active population. Static stretching is often used as a way to increase hamstring muscle flexibility with immediate and long term gains (Nelson & Bandy, 2004; Rubley et al., 2001 ). However, there may be more effective treatments to gain the desired hamstring flexibility. Soft-tissue massage has been shown to immediately increase hamstring muscle flexibility, however it has not been researched for long-term gains as well as being used in conjunction with a static stretching program. GT is an instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization technique that claims to increase muscle flexibility through …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of Scales To Measure Professional Confidence In Manual Medicine: A Rasch Measurement Approach, Mark D. Hecimovich, Irene Styles, Simone E. Volet

Faculty Publications

Background: Health professionals in athletic training, chiropractic, osteopathy, and physiotherapy fields, require high-level knowledge and skills in their assessment and management of patients. This is important when communicating with patients and applying a range of manual procedures. Prior to embarking on professional practice, it is imperative to acquire optimal situation-specific levels of self-confidence for a beginner practitioner in these areas. In order to foster this professional self-confidence within the higher education context, it is necessary to have valid and reliable scales that can measure and track levels and how they change. This study reports on the development and psychometric analysis …

Productivity Improvement - Six Sigma Influence, Hamad Alhadab

Graduate Research Papers

The phenomenon of productivity improvement has been researched upon by applying mixed method approach. The quantitative model is included to assist the qualitative data with statistics. The findings are validated by taking on board a panel of experts who deduce facts and further on recommend the suitability and effects of six sigma strategies. It is suggested that trends to maximize the possibility of realistic goals should be implemented by following a cyclic process of productivity improvement. Six Sigma influence is particularly useful in proposing the training outline for the team players and to build a smooth communication network between management …

Project Planning For Insourcing Manufactured Steel Components, Brett M. Schlomann Jan 2014

Project Planning For Insourcing Manufactured Steel Components, Brett M. Schlomann

Graduate Research Papers

The problem analyzed in this study is how to build a business case and project plan for insourcing a steel component part family at an agricultural manufacturer in the Midwest. The part family consists of three part numbers that were being produced outside of the organization, and are very similar to parts that are currently made internally. The supply management organization requested manufacturing to quote this work as a potential cost savings.

Reducing the overall cost of the product is essential to the organization remaining competitive in the global marketplace. Reducing the cost of the product allows the manufacturer to …
