2013-2014 Executive Summary, Reading Recovery Program Of Iowa, Salli Forbes Mar 2015

2013-2014 Executive Summary, Reading Recovery Program Of Iowa, Salli Forbes

Documents

Reading Recovery is a research-‐based early literacy intervention implemented in schools to provide intensive individual literacy instruction to the lowest achieving first grade students in the core classroom. The goal of the intervention is to accelerate students’ progress to grade-‐level proficiency in 12 to 20 weeks. Reading Recovery fits response to intervention (RTI) plans by significantly reducing the number of students who need special education services and contributing to the identification of a small number of children who may need specialized long-‐term assistance. The University of Northern Iowa is an official

Using Data To Expand Programming On Campus: Data Driven Decision-Making And Institutional Collaboration In First-Year Only Courses At Uni, David Marcesani, Kristin Moser

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Following UNI’s "Foundations of Excellence® (FoE) First Year” self-study, in partnership with the John Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (John N. Gardner Institute, 2014), Cornerstone (UNIV 1000 and UNIV 1010), a first-year experience course, was established. Cornerstone is a year-long course that satisfies the writing and oral communication requirement within UNI’s Liberal Arts Core (LAC). Each Cornerstone section has, at minimum, one peer mentor embedded in the course. The First-Year Cornerstone course was piloted in fall 2010 with 9 First-Year Cornerstone sections and 11 peer mentors. This model then expanded to include “first-year only” (FYO) courses in the …

Shakespeare And School Counseling, Nick Abel Mar 2015

Shakespeare And School Counseling, Nick Abel

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In the ongoing search for therapeutic tools and techniques to use with students from kindergarten through the 12th grade (K-12), it is unlikely that many school counselors have considered the work of William Shakespeare. Generally confined to upper-level high school English classrooms, the work of “The Bard” is more likely to be considered an obstacle for students to overcome than a resource to enhance their academic, career, or personal/social development (Anderson & Anderson, 2003). While Shakespeare may not have a place in every school counseling program, below are some possibilities for using his work in contemporary K-12 settings.

Hands-On Russian Culture Lessons, Ksenia S. Zhbanova, Audrey C. Rule, Michelle L. Tichy Mar 2015

Hands-On Russian Culture Lessons, Ksenia S. Zhbanova, Audrey C. Rule, Michelle L. Tichy

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

The global diverse society necessitates that teachers develop cultural competency and use authentic resources for teaching. This article presents classroom-tested materials for teaching elementary students about aspects of Russian culture, developed by a native Russian and two education professors. Multiage, multi-racial American Midwestern students from a homeschooling cooperative learned vocabulary and concepts with statistically significant increases from pretest to posttest and a large effect size. The lessons began with recognition of human commonalities between Russian people and Americans, in accordance with omniculturalism theory. Lessons then highlighted and celebrated cultural differences through an exploration of Russian literature and culture. Culminating creative …

Course-Embedded Peer Mentor Program, Kristin Woods Mar 2015

Course-Embedded Peer Mentor Program, Kristin Woods

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The involvement of peer leaders has been a key feature of First-Year Cornerstone since early in its development, reflecting the value placed on collaboration between students, faculty members, and student affairs staff from the beginning of the Foundations of Excellence process. Early on, we envisioned course-embedded peers as teaching assistants who would collaborate with Cornerstone faculty members on classroom activities and provide academic assistance to first-year students. After the first two years of the program, it was clear that students viewed their peer teaching assistants (PTAs) as helpful, approachable guides through their transition to college. While academic support was one …

Merging Parallels: Libraries In The Classroom, Gretchen Gould

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Here at Rod Library, librarians are always looking for new and different opportunities to reach out to students and faculty. With the deluge of information in the world today, it is even more crucial for students to learn and utilize information literacy skills. When the Cornerstone program was created, the librarians were asked to participate.

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 2, Susan Roberts-Dobie

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

For two years (2012-13 and 2013-14), I took a break from one of my major classes to teach a section of Cornerstone. It was a pretty big leap for me, given I had no formal academic preparation in teaching speaking or writing, but I was intrigued by the opportunity to work with freshmen, and after ten years of teaching the same preps, I needed to stretch a little. The learning curve was steep, but well supported by the leadership team. Now that I have returned to my home department full time, I can see three ways Cornerstone has changed my …

Cornerstone Commitment To Collaboration, Debra Young

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to teaching. I love to watch outstanding teachers, collect bits and bobs of their best techniques, and see how I can learn from them. It doesn’t matter if the discipline relates to mine; if it’s shiny, I’m curious about it.

Cornerstone is perfect for a magpie like me. As an interdepartmental program, the instructors are drawn from across campus, bringing the best of their disciplines with them. All are dedicated to collaboration, and time is set aside to ensure collaboration is possible.

Losing Oneself And Manufacturing Bureaucracy In Contemporary Elite American Higher Education [A Review Of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation Of The American Elite & The Way To A Meaningful Life, By William Deresiewicz], Jesse Swan Mar 2015

Losing Oneself And Manufacturing Bureaucracy In Contemporary Elite American Higher Education [A Review Of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation Of The American Elite & The Way To A Meaningful Life, By William Deresiewicz], Jesse Swan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Commentary about higher education can seem confused and wrongheaded. There are many reasons for this, but a common problem is that the general topic is usually poorly specified. One of the great virtues of William Deresiewicz’s description of the defilement of American higher education and of his proposals for its purification is that Deresiewicz’s description and proposals are concentrated on his cogently specified topic: the effect of elite education, specifically traced to the admissions process of the most exclusive American universities, on the people subjected to it. Much flows from Deresiewicz’s humane consideration of the topic, including a discussion of …

Exploring Ideas Onstage: A Creative Connection, Richard Glockner, Eric Lange

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The Theatre/Cornerstone collaboration began in the spring of 2011. Upon learning that one of Cornerstone’s initiatives was the implementation of an annual common read, Theatre suggested the creation and delivery of a dramatic adaptation of the selection to be followed by a discussion for all students and faculty involved.

Shakespeare And Teaching Rhetorical Technique In The Speech Classroom, Amanda Arp Mar 2015

Shakespeare And Teaching Rhetorical Technique In The Speech Classroom, Amanda Arp

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Shakespeare’s artistic communication within the speeches of his plays has the potential to augment student learning in college speech communication courses. Studying Shakespeare is appropriate in college speech communication courses because students could achieve improved rhetorical skills. Studying Shakespeare could even fulfill learning objectives of speech communication classes. For example, at Iowa State University, one of the learning objectives of the speech communication foundation course, SP CM 212, is to “select appropriate language to communicate ideas vividly, accurately, and respectfully” (LeFebvre 3). William Shakespeare’s plays have thrived because of his vivid, rhetorical language. Therefore, by studying the language of several …

To Build A Foundation, Nichole Zumbach Harken, Rachel Morgan

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Just like a cornerstone was once placed to square and level a building during construction, a successful Cornerstone class provides a UNI student with the skills of communication, civility, thinking, and success - the same skills he or she will need to be a citizen in a college community and beyond. The image below appears on almost every Cornerstone syllabus, and it also reminds us that as college instructors we’re in the business of building professional, prepared citizens.

Cornerstone: An Experiment In Interdisciplinarity And Community, April Chatham-Carpenter, Deirdre Bucher Heistad Mar 2015

Cornerstone: An Experiment In Interdisciplinarity And Community, April Chatham-Carpenter, Deirdre Bucher Heistad

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This forum, on the First-Year Cornerstone course at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), tells the story of the creation, collaboration, community, and cultivation of learning that has developed as a result of teaching a course across various disciplines and divisions, with a longevity different from anything else that has been tried at UNI in such a vein. It focuses on the work taken to effectively cross multiple disciplinary and divisional boundaries in order to create an interdisciplinary academic course community for first-year students.

Prior to 2008, UNI had virtually no courses reserved exclusively for first-year students, and those initiatives …

A Contemporary Ophelia Reads The Sonnets, Vicki J. Simpson Mar 2015

A Contemporary Ophelia Reads The Sonnets, Vicki J. Simpson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Shakespeare’s Ophelia is a complex character—she’s multilayered, conflicted, and evocative. Exactly how a woman from such a golden age of exploration and expansion in England’s history could have lived such a circumscribed existence is certainly understandable, given the time period, but it’s also an incalculable tragedy. In this piece, I invite you to suspend your disbelief and join me in an imaginative quest to see how this star-crossed noblewoman from Denmark might approach Shakespeare’s Sonnets 29, 30, and 122, from a decadent, epicurean, self-indulgent, and entirely postmodern perspective.

How Cornerstone Changed My Teaching, Story 3, Doug Shaw

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

When I started as a mathematics professor at the University of Northern Iowa, I was the “teaching radical” in my department. I was using the newest techniques, and I knew The Way. After a dozen years had passed, I had become a fuddy-duddy, set in his ways, and hadn’t really realized it. My “newest techniques” weren’t that new, nor had I really examined them in years, while some other professors in the department were experimenting with the real cutting edge in mathematics instruction.

As part of the maturing of the Cornerstone efforts, there have been more opportunities for collaboration between different campus units, such as the Rod Library and the Academic Learning Center. The more campus collaborations which have developed have led to a greater variety of resources and services for students to have a richer Cornerstone experience.

Reality In Shakespeare And The Digital World [A Review By John Sievers Of Shakespeare And The Digital World: Redefining Scholarship And Practice, Edited By Christie Carson And Peter Kirwan], John Sievers

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The collection of essays edited by Christie Carson and Peter Kirwan, Shakespeare and the Digital World: Redefining Scholarship and Practice, came to me at a pertinent moment. I started reading it after I had pushed a squeaky-wheeled cart full of twenty-eight iPads to class, then used a document camera displaying my iPad and fingers to show the class how to search a database. Later that day, I also observed a student use a smartphone-based online dictionary app to hear how to pronounce Ceres. The student then used his new knowledge to further a group discussion about scansion in lines …

A Review By Regina Marler For Becoming Virginia Woolf: Her Early Diaries And The Diaries She Read, By Barbara Lounsberry, Regina Marler

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Very rarely, when bending the head over some worthy academic volume, perhaps with a title something like, Post-postmodernisms of Cross-colonial Language Theories or (Mal)contents: Forematter Errata in Eighteenth Century Rural Sermons, a revelation strikes the reader around page fifteen: “My God, I am actually going to enjoy this.” Some of us have experienced this jolt of pleasure and intellectual communion but few realize that it can occur even when the author has, unaccountably, snatched one of the best titles from a handwritten shortlist the reader has kept taped near her desk for her own current work-in-progress. Such, I can …

Open Access Publishing And The Ends Of Scholarship, Fred Rascoe

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

. In October of 2014, at the 29th International Conference on Medievalism held in Atlanta, I was privileged to co-host (along with J. Britt Holbrook from the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy) a panel on “Open Access in the Academy.” It was a large panel that featured many medieval scholars who engaged with each other and the audience on what Open Access means to their discipline, to their careers, and to humanities scholarship in general. The panel discussion was filmed and is available to view in SMARTech (Hahn, et al., 2014), but with this brief column I wanted …
