Introduction, Anita M. Gordon Mar 2016

Introduction, Anita M. Gordon

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In a review of the top surveys on cheating in college by Donald McCabe and others from the last several decades, James Lang (2013) noted overall incidence rates in the range of 65% to 82%. Keeping in mind that these are based on self-report data, which rely on student honesty in the reporting, accurate memories, and a clear understanding of what constitutes cheating, these results suggest that academic integrity continues to be a challenging and yet critical issue for higher education. After graduation, research shows that there is a high correlation (66% for undergraduates, 61% for graduate students) between cheating …

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Helgevold], Abbylynn Helgevold

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

When I first started thinking about academic integrity my thoughts originally began with the classroom. I thought about the steps I take to promote integrity or, more specifically, limit cheating and academic dishonesty. Like many of my colleagues, I noticed that I too tended to focus less on punitive measures and more on positive steps to reinforce and support integrity. As many of the conference presenters indicated, these steps are recognized as strong pedagogical strategies in addition to being effective in curbing cheating behavior. When I reflect on these practices I realize that, for the most part, I consider these …

Commandant Of Lubizec: Fiction And The Holocaust In The Twilight Of The Survivor Era, Stephen J. Gaies

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Seventy years after the liberation of the camps, Holocaust scholarship remains as vibrant and self-renewing as ever. Important works have been published in recent years; many have helped to shift the spotlight onto topics to which too little attention had been paid. For example, researchers like Omer Bartov, Timothy Snyder and Robert DesBois have focused on the war in the East and mass murder in the western Soviet Union, where some one and a half million Jews were shot by firing squads in what is now often referred to, following DesBois and the title of his book, as the Holocaust …

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Cornish], Disa Cornish

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

As an assistant professor in my third year on the faculty, I have seen academic integrity issues in the classroom and am considering strategies to reduce the number that occur. The interesting thing that I “discovered” upon beginning teaching is that most of the teachers in academia weren’t trained to be teachers. I was trained how to do public health, how to do the thing, but not how to teach how to do the thing. In the midst of learning how to convey content in a meaningful way, it was easy to let academic integrity fall by the wayside while …

The Voting Rights Act In 1965 And Today, John W. Johnson Mar 2016

The Voting Rights Act In 1965 And Today, John W. Johnson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

According to the Department of Justice, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is the most successful piece of civil rights legislation ever adopted by the Congress of the United States. That’s quite a statement. It is fitting and appropriate, therefore, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this landmark statute in conjunction with this year’s Constitution Day.

Ten years ago, Professor Donna Hoffman and I were on a voting rights panel to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Voting Rights Act. I do not know how much longer we are going to be able to keep doing this. Sitting between Professor Hoffman …

Literacy And Arts-Integrated Science Lessons Engage Urban Elementary Students In Exploring Environmental Issues, Audrey C. Rule, Phyllis Gray, Caroline Elser, Julie Leigh Klein

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

This descriptive case study examined student attitudes, writing skills and content knowledge of urban fourth and fifth graders (6 males, 9 female) during a six-week literacy, thinking skill, and art-integrated environmental science unit. Pre- and post- test questions were used to address knowledge of environmental problems and student environmental actions. Students expressed knowledge and suggestions for positive action of youth through four essays throughout the unit, the final essay being accompanied by a pop-up construction. Writings showed steady growth in number of words, sentences, suggested environmental actions for youth, and instances of discussing consequences and sequels of actions. Students were …

Cycling State That Can Lead To Glassy Dynamics In Intracellular Transport, Monika Scholtz, Stanislav Burov, Kimberly L. Weirich, Björn J. Scholtz, S.M. Ali Tabei, Margaret L. Gardel, Aaron R. Dinner

Faculty Work

Power-law dwell times have been observed for molecular motors in living cells, but the origins of these trapped states are not known. We introduce a minimal model of motors moving on a two-dimensional network of filaments, and simulations of its dynamics exhibit statistics comparable to those observed experimentally. Analysis of the model trajectories, as well as experimental particle tracking data, reveals a state in which motors cycle unproductively at junctions of three or more filaments. We formulate a master equation for these junction dynamics and show that the time required to escape from this vortexlike state can account for the …

Nakba Day: The Ephemera Of Martyrdom, Philip Hopper Mar 2016

Nakba Day: The Ephemera Of Martyrdom, Philip Hopper

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Nakba Commemoration Day for Palestinians is the counterpart of Israel’s Independence Day, which takes place one week earlier. These days respectively mark the forcible expulsions of Palestinians from the nascent state of Israel and the declaration of statehood by Israel. One tribe’s independence is another tribe’s disaster. One person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist. Parallel yet inverted narratives are everywhere in history and the present, from Manifest Destiny to the Ukraine, the Sudan, Northern Ireland and elsewhere today.

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Terlip], Laura Terlip

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

To begin, my area of study is organizational communication and I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in that area. I also have been teaching a course in Communication Ethics that is a Liberal Arts Core Capstone choice at the University of Northern Iowa. In all of the courses, significant discussions occur in relation to four areas: (a) the difference between effective and efficient communication and ethical communication, (b) what a person should do and what people often actually do, (c) how the situation affects the behavioral choices, and (d) the line that one crosses when unethical communication occurs …

Commemorating The Voting Rights Act Of 1965, Michael Blackwell Reverend

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was the pinnacle of the ten-year struggle to liberate African Americans from the shackles of slavery and Jim Crow segregation. Although the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave black men the right to vote way back in 1870, coupled with the 19th Amendment that gave women, including black women, the right in 1920, racism still abounded at election offices across the country—particularly, but not exclusively, among the Southern states. American Negroes, if you will, had been struggling for free access to the polls for decades, when major organizations such as the National Association …

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Waldron], Jennifer J. Waldron Mar 2016

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Waldron], Jennifer J. Waldron

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I want to start by contextualizing my teaching in terms of academic integrity. First, I teach primarily upper-level, major courses and graduate classes. Second, academic integrity is a core value that I believe is essential to the university environment. Along with that, is my belief that it is critical that students develop academic integrity as a value as they move into their professional careers. Because of this, I work to educate students on academic dishonesty. I am also upfront with them and state that I have and will investigate potential violations and take the necessary action.

Building A Culture Of Academic Integrity [Vansandt], Craig Vansandt

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I teach Business Policy and Strategy (the final required course in the business curriculum), and Business, Ethics, and Society (an upper level elective). Both courses naturally lend themselves to student discussion, and because that is my preferred style of teaching I do all I can to encourage it. In addition, integrity is a topic that is not only logical, but also essential to each course. We incorporate discussion about both academic integrity and virtue in one’s career, and how they relate.

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I bring the perspective of a scientist to this conversation. I teach introductory chemistry courses to students who are science majors. Science professors teach versions of the scientific method, which is essentially how we view and organize information. It is a way to think about the world through the lens of science. In order to be considered a scientific finding, the research must be repeatable, reproducible, and refutable.

Cracks In The Cornerstone: Toward More Informed Decision-Making In Rhetorical Education, David M. Grant

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In their forum on the First-Year Cornerstone course, April Chatham-Carpenter and Deedee Heistad (2015) explain their memories of developing the program and sketch a vision of what they hope they have achieved. Certainly, all involved have worked "toward the goal of helping first-year students succeed in college," and they should be commended for their dedication and efforts to bring together often disconnected parts of the university in the name of improving student learning, retention, and overall satisfaction. As an early member of the planning team who assisted bringing the proposal for Cornerstone to the Liberal Arts Core Committee in 2010 …
