A Qualitative Comparison Of General Chemistry And Advanced Placement Chemistry Students’ Misconceptions Regarding Solution Chemistry, Megan Vandersee Apr 2017

A Qualitative Comparison Of General Chemistry And Advanced Placement Chemistry Students’ Misconceptions Regarding Solution Chemistry, Megan Vandersee

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

There has been much research on student misconceptions regarding the particulate nature of matter and its relation to solution chemistry (e.g. Adadan & Savasci, 2012; Calik & Ayas, 2005; Calik, Ayas, & Coll, 2009; Pinarbasi & Canpolat, 2003; K. J. Smith & Metz, 1996). However, there is a lack of information regarding student misconceptions in areas of solution chemistry such as factors affecting solubility, polarity & molecular interactions and colligative properties. This research compared the misconceptions in solution chemistry held by students who are approaching the end of an Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry course in the high school setting with …

Current Practices Of Co-Teaching In An Elementary Inclusive School: Moving Toward Effective Co-Teaching Relationship, Mona Al Nassir

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Co-teaching has become more prevalent in schools. The purpose of this study is to explore how general and special education teachers build successful co-teaching relationships to provide special education services to students with disabilities. This case study specifically described how two pairs of co-teachers including one special education teacher and two general education teachers interact, collaborate, and build and promote their co-teaching relationships.

The observation and interviews with two first grade co-teaching pairs provided data that told the story of how their co-teaching relationships developed and were promoted through working together in an inclusive classroom. Research data for this qualitative …

Certified Nonprofit Professionals Early Career Decisions And Student Loan Debt, Kristina Kofoot Apr 2017

Certified Nonprofit Professionals Early Career Decisions And Student Loan Debt, Kristina Kofoot

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

In the United States today college students graduate with more than $35,000 in student loan debt (Berman, 2015). There is little research as to what the impact of this debt has had on the career choices and trajectories of these graduates particularly those considering entering the nonprofit sector. The nonprofit sector serves millions of people across the United States every year (National Center for Charitable Statistics, 2016). In order to stay current, these organizations need to hire highly qualified professionals. The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) offers a professional credential to students that enter their program. This credential titled Certified Nonprofit …

Misplaced Priorities: How County Health Departments Overlook The Leading Causes Of Death, Jeremy Whitaker Apr 2017

Misplaced Priorities: How County Health Departments Overlook The Leading Causes Of Death, Jeremy Whitaker

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Problem: Most Iowans die from chronic diseases, or diseases developed over time, often influenced through behavioral choice. The top three, heart disease, cancer, and lower respiratory diseases account for over half of all death in Iowa and in the nation. However, most public health funding focuses on infectious disease and treatment, leaving little or nothing for primary prevention of chronic diseases.

Method: The 2014 Local Governmental Public Health Survey, annual reports, and Health Improvement projects were analyzed for primary prevention of chronic diseases at county health departments. This was compared to a review of federal and state funding for chronic …

The New North: Patents And Knowledge Economy In Alaska, Salma Zbeed Apr 2017

The New North: Patents And Knowledge Economy In Alaska, Salma Zbeed

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Alaska's economy has taken a direct hit as world oil prices plunged from a high well above $100 per barrel to very low prices per barrel, the analysts predicting output will continue to dwindle in the years to come. As a result of Alaska's full-blown dependence on oil money, the state now faces a budget deficit. Investment in knowledge –based economy seems to be appealing, and involving the human capacities is necessary. As the Alaska economy continues to recover from the recent financial crisis, the focus is now shifting towards how new sources of economic growth can be fostered that …

Technological strides are being made constantly. Creative writing has changed with technology. Creative writers can publish their work online; creative pieces proliferate as online communities share their interests. “Editing Creative Manuscripts—Becoming a Multimodal Entity: From Manuscript to Multimodality” offers a perspective on the editing cycle to move from static editing of the creative manuscript into a multimodal entity. This poster is inspired by John Willinsky’s research on open access. With an open mind and a mindful ear, the audience can take this poster presentation’s research to edit a creative manuscript for a multimodal purpose. The process begins with initial questions; …

Achieving And Maintaining Flow During Practice And Performance, Jenna Klein Apr 2017

Achieving And Maintaining Flow During Practice And Performance, Jenna Klein

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Flow, also referred to as being “in the zone,” is a state of total absorption in an activity where an individual’s risk and skill are in balance. This mental state is sought after by many musicians for its positive effect on performance. Flow has been described as leading to a loss of self-awareness, changes in the perception of time, the ability to play effortlessly, a sense of calm, and confidence. Flow is characterized by changes in brain function. Complete, undistracted concentration on one activity allows the left, more analytical side of the brain to rest, while the right, more creative …

Exploring Technology Through The Integration Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy And Issues Of Social Justice, Courtney Clausen

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

As classrooms become more racially/ethnically, economically, and linguistically diverse in the United States it is important for teachers to integrate pedagogy and methodology in the classroom that challenges existing inequities in education and assist all students in being successful in the classroom. Integrating culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching into one’s teaching and learning with diverse students can assist with creating an equitable learning environment. The purpose of this poster presentation is to share the findings of an action research project exploring the integration of culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching in a summer enrichment program for a …

A Literature Review: Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Efficacy To Deal With Student With Special Needs, Pujaningsih Pujaningsih Apr 2017

A Literature Review: Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Efficacy To Deal With Student With Special Needs, Pujaningsih Pujaningsih

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

This review offered a detailed analysis of 18 studies that focused on self-efficacy of preservice teachers in inclusive classrooms. There were two focuses: the research methodology and results of the study that cover influential factors and the changes of self-efficacy levels of preservice teachers teaching in inclusive classrooms. The methodological concerns that need to be addressed by future researchers, as well as some research agendas for future studies, are suggested based on the findings of this paper. Only 26% (n=5) of the studies offered some alternative strategies that can be applied to enhance high self-efficacy levels of the preservice teachers. …

Second-Graders Beautify For Butterflies, Andrea Anderson

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

This project presents activities that support previous research suggesting the integration of art with science is beneficial to the learning and cooperative processes of children. The primary participants in this project were 23 second-grade students. The second-graders participated in a community engagement activity during which they brainstormed, collaboratively problem solved, and implemented a new plan to beautify an outdoor space at their school. The Think-Pair-Share (TPS) learning strategy was implemented to encourage peer teaching in the classroom. Students’ participation in activities was organized based upon the 5 E’s learning phases; engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.

The results of this …

Those who attend this presentation will learn about mindfulness and power posing interventions and their effect on reducing emotional distress in late adolescents.

Antiproliferative Effects Of Hibernating American Bullfrog (Rana Catesbeiana) Blood Plasma On Thp-1 Cells, Sean Robbins Apr 2017

Antiproliferative Effects Of Hibernating American Bullfrog (Rana Catesbeiana) Blood Plasma On Thp-1 Cells, Sean Robbins

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Hibernation is an incredible adaptation that allows an organism to go dormant during the winter, when food is scarce. Much is unknown physiologically about hibernation, and most current research comes from mammalian models. During hibernation, the cells of mammals are impeded from going through mitosis. 13-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) and woodchucks (Marmota monax) have a protein, alpha-2-macroglobulin, in their blood plasma, which has significant antiproliferative effects on spleen cells. The goal of my study was to determine if an exothermic organism, the American Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), also actively suppresses mitosis while hibernating and if so, determine if it is …

Making Inventions Using Scamper And Animal Adaptation Ideas With Elementary Students, Mahjabeen Hussain Apr 2017

Making Inventions Using Scamper And Animal Adaptation Ideas With Elementary Students, Mahjabeen Hussain

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

This study explores to what extent the SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Rearrange) technique combined with animal adaptation ideas learned through form and function analogy activities can help fourth graders generate creative ideas while augmenting their inventiveness. The sample consisted of 24 fourth grade students (14 female, 10 male) ages 9-10 at a suburban Midwestern elementary school. A repeated-measures design involving all participants alternately in the two conditions measured students under each treatment condition. In the experimental condition, students used SCAMPER charts with animal adaptation ideas to generate ideas to improve a product using …

Gender Differences In Civilian Stigma Of Combat-Related And Military Sexual Trauma-Related Ptsd, Marjorie Perkins Apr 2017

Gender Differences In Civilian Stigma Of Combat-Related And Military Sexual Trauma-Related Ptsd, Marjorie Perkins

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental disorder often associated with military servicemembers. Two common types of trauma associated with PTSD in servicemembers are combat and Military Sexual Trauma (MST). MST is defined as sexual harassment that is threatening in character or physical assault of a sexual nature that occurred while the victim was in the military. Stigma, or the negative social identity attributed to a feature or characteristics of an individual, is a factor associated with both PTSD and MST. In a qualitative study, recent veterans were asked about the perceptions of a soldier being diagnosed with a …

Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Transgender Men And Women, Emma Welch, Antoinette Fleming, Hailey Hatch Apr 2017

Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Transgender Men And Women, Emma Welch, Antoinette Fleming, Hailey Hatch

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Transgender individuals experience prejudice (Elischberger et al., 2016; Norton & Herek, 2013) and have a much higher suicide rate (41%) than the national average, possibly due to this prejudice and discrimination (Haas, Rodgers, & Herman, 2014). Little research, however, has examined factors that may relate to greater levels of prejudice toward this group. The degree and expression of prejudice toward many types of targets differs by political orientation (Nail, Harton, & Decker, 2003), and empathy decreases prejudice toward some targets (Batson, Polycarpou, Harmon-Jones, Mitchener, Bednar, & Highberger, 1997). We hypothesized that conservatives would express more negative attitudes towards transgender individuals …

Perceptions Of Transgender Populations: An Educational Module To Increase Knowledge And Reduce Negative Attitudes, Dacia Oberhelman Apr 2017

Perceptions Of Transgender Populations: An Educational Module To Increase Knowledge And Reduce Negative Attitudes, Dacia Oberhelman

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Individuals who identify as transgender are at the receiving end of subtle and direct forms of negative attitudes and discrimination. These attitudes and discrimination remain despite the recent research emphasis on attitudes toward sexual minority populations and the large improvement in attitudes toward sexual minorities over the last few decades. Recent research related to transgender populations largely focuses on examining the existing attitudes, rather than attempts to reduce these negative attitudes. In the current study, we aim to increase knowledge about transgender populations and reduce negative attitudes by employing an online psychoeducational intervention module. Potential change in attitudes will be …

Just Sleep It Off: Does Sleep Moderate The Impact Of Insecure Attachment Styles On Cortisol Levels?, Kristin Rooff Apr 2017

Just Sleep It Off: Does Sleep Moderate The Impact Of Insecure Attachment Styles On Cortisol Levels?, Kristin Rooff

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Insecure attachment styles have been shown to negatively impact several aspects of physical and mental health. An association exists between insecure attachment and dysregulation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; in particular, its impact on cortisol release. However, in reaction to a stressor, attachment style has shown varying impacts depending on the type of insecure attachment (high anxiety or high avoidance). Research on stress reactivity using measures of salivary cortisol has shown that insecure attachment is positively correlated with cortisol reactivity, even when accounting for factors such as age and body-mass index. Specifically, there is a link between “high anxiety” (insecure) …

Introducing Corpus Linguistics To Iranian Efl Teachers, Fatemeh Bordbarjavidi Apr 2017

Introducing Corpus Linguistics To Iranian Efl Teachers, Fatemeh Bordbarjavidi

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

This poster will identify an approach to introduce EFL teachers to the benefits and possibilities of using on-line language corpora as a tool in their classrooms. The specific context considered here is one in which practicing teachers have little or no familiarity with applied corpus linguistics. A survey was conducted with 15 Iranian EFL teachers to ascertain relevant contextual variables, such as their knowledge of applied corpus linguistics, their willingness to become familiar with new technological approaches to language teaching/learning, skill areas they feel are inadequately served by traditional methods of teaching, their perceptions of student openness to new approaches. …

Head Out Of Water Weighing: A Valid Method To Measure Body Fat Storage?, Molly Hussey Apr 2017

Head Out Of Water Weighing: A Valid Method To Measure Body Fat Storage?, Molly Hussey

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Underwater weighing with full lung expiration has been established as a valid method to assess body composition. Many people do not prefer this method due to various reasons. Hydrostatic weighing with head above water at full lung capacity has been tested although not accepted as an alternative method. Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to examine if hydrostatic weighing with the head above water could be a better method to measure body composition. Methods: Fifty-nine subjects (F=29, M=30) participated in performing four different methods of underwater weighing: complete immersion at full lung expiration (UWWRV) and total lung capacity …
