Origin Of Large Effective Phonon Magnetic Moments In Monolayer Mos2, Hussam Mustafa, Cynthia Nnokwe, Gaihua Ye, Mengqi Fang, Swati Chaudhary, Jia An Yan, Kai Wu, Connor J. Cunningham, Colin M. Hemesath, Andrew James Stollenwerk, Paul M. Shand, Eui Hyeok Yang

Recent helicity-resolved magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurement demonstrates large effective phonon magnetic moments of ∼2.5 μB in monolayer MoS2, highlighting resonant excitation of bright excitons as a feasible route to activate Γ-point circularly polarized phonons in transition metal dichalcogenides. However, a microscopic picture of this intriguing phenomenon remains lacking. In this work, we show that an orbital transition between the split conduction bands (Δ0 = 4 meV) of MoS2 couples to the doubly degenerate E″ phonon mode (Ω0 = 33 meV), forming two hybridized states. Here, we present results of combined experimental and computations study of V2CoAl, a Heusler alloy that exhibits nearly perfect spin-polarization. Our calculations indicate that this material maintains a high degree of spin-polarization (over 90%) in the wide range of lattice parameters, except at the largest considered unit cell volume. The magnetic alignment of V2CoAl is ferrimagnetic, due to the antialignment of the magnetic moments of vanadium atoms in their two sublattices. The calculated total magnetic moment per formula unit is nearly integer at the optimal lattice parameter and at the smaller volumes of the unit cell, but it deviated from …

Is Bullying Associated With Health Risk And Quality Of Life Behaviors In Adolescents?, Ana Beatriz Pacífico, Eliane Denise Araújo Bacil, Thiago Silva Piola, Michael Pereira Da Silva, Fabio Fontana, Jhonatan Gritten Campos, Ademar Avelar, Wagner De Campos

This study assessed the practice of bullying, health risk behavior and quality of life in adolescent boys and girls from the city of Maringá, Paraná. A representative sample of 1,020 adolescents participated in the study to assess the association between bullying, health-risk behavior, and quality of life factors through self-reported questionnaires. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were obtained using both crude and adjusted binary and ordinal logistic regression, with a significance level of p< 0.05. Male bullying perpetrators were 2.2 (95%CI=1.4-3.4) and 2.0 (95%CI=1.2-3.2) times more likely to consume alcohol and engage in physical activity compared to non-bullying males. Female bullying perpetrators were 2.1 (95%CI=1.3-3.5), 3.6 (95%CI=1.3-10.1), 1.8 (95%CI=1.1-2.9), and 2.7 (95%CI=1.1-6.3) times more likely to smoke, use illicit drugs, be addicted to smartphones, and have poorer sleep quality. These girls also had a 60% higher chance of having a worse perception of quality of life, respectively, compared to non-bullying females. The conclusion drawn is that bullying may be associated with health risk behaviors for both boys and girls.

Returning To The Beginning Place: Le Guin’S Forgotten Anti-Fantasy Four Decades On, Timothy S. Miller

Ursula K. Le Guin's 1980 portal fantasy The Beginning Place has received a fraction of the critical attention that most of her other novels have attracted over the years. This short book's many enigmas, often structured by self-consciously Jungian symbolism, are best understood as operating in service not to a strict Jungian framework, but rather to a broader metafictional evaluation of fantasy and an articulation of Le Guin's own preferred approach to the reading and interpretation of fantasy.
