Toward A Performative Understanding Of Politeness, C. Kyle Rudick, Danielle E. Mcgeough Jan 2019

Toward A Performative Understanding Of Politeness, C. Kyle Rudick, Danielle E. Mcgeough

Faculty Publications

In this article, we argue that critical communication scholars have largely overlooked the study of politeness as a constitutive component of identity, culture, and power. We offer a critical-performative framework for critical scholars interested in studying politeness as a political, discursive, and embodied act. To develop this agenda, we first outline Brown and Levinson’s postpositivist theory of politeness. We then review three challenges to their use of intentionality, Grice’s cooperative principle, and Goffman’s concept of face. These challenges are located in interactional, traditional critical, and discursive understandings of politeness (respectively). Next, we show how a performative understanding of politeness both …

The Relationship Between An Alternative Form Of Cognitive Reflection Test And Intertemporal Choice, Jiuqing Cheng, Cassidy Janssen Jan 2019

The Relationship Between An Alternative Form Of Cognitive Reflection Test And Intertemporal Choice, Jiuqing Cheng, Cassidy Janssen

Faculty Work

The cognitive reflection test (CRT) has been popular because it has demonstrated a good predictive validity of a variety of biases in judgment and decision making. Thomson and Oppenheimer (2016) further developed a second version of the cognitive reflection test, CRT-2. Although CRT-2 has been found to be associated with several biases in judgment and decision making, its relationship with intertemporal choice remains unclear. Previous studies have shown that intertemporal choice characterizes the competition between intuition and reflection, and can be predicted by the original CRT. To further validate CRT-2, the present study tests the relationship between CRT-2 and intertemporal …

Intelligent Tutoring Systems could be used to provide differentiated instruction. This review examines qualities of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and their impact on student achievement. Thirty peer-reviewed research studies published from 1997 to 2019 were selected for analysis. This review considers how intelligent tutoring systems compare with other methods of instruction, and how an intelligent tutoring system’s on-screen tutor impacts student achievement. Finally, this review considers methods of ITS personalization and how those methods impact student achievement. The reviewed research studies indicated that ITS was more effective than all forms of instruction except small group and individualized instruction. Additionally, on-screen agents …

Teacher Perceptions Of Understaffed School Libraries, Amanda Bonjour

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this mixed methods study is to learn what classroom teachers perceive the effects of improper staffing of school libraries to be. It asks: What do classroom teachers perceive are the effects of improper staffing or the cutting of a school librarian? Through the qualitative analysis of survey responses, the study found that teachers perceived teacher librarians to have a positive impact on student achievement through collaboration and to be a valuable asset in providing resources for staff and students. Qualitatively, results from two school districts, one with and one without a certified librarian staffed in their middle …

Social Rejection During The First Year Of College: Exploring The Factors Of Communication Competence And Coping, Joshua R. Pederson, Kelly E. Tenzek, Dana Kloeber, Katie Striley, Jennifer Bender

Iowa Journal of Communication

Seeking belonging, some first-year college students struggle to connect socially and often experience social rejection. The goal of this study was to understand the nature and outcomes of social rejection experiences during the first year of college. A qualitative thematic analysis revealed that there are causes of rejection, sources from which the rejection is experienced, and outcomes of the experience. Statistical analyses tested associations between communication competence and coping behaviors and outcomes of rejection experiences such as loneliness and depression. Escape and avoidance coping behaviors were associated with reports of higher depression and loneliness. Implications of the study and future …

The purpose of this study is to identify any relationships between various psychological factors and angular variables observed during the functional activity of gait for TKA patients. Application of these results may be utilized by physical therapists to maximize the quality of personal patient care provided while allowing patients the opportunity to successfully return to the functional activity of walking. Psychological factors that were examined included those noted in the self-determination theory studied by Ryan & Patrick (2009): motivation, …

Effects Of Political Ingroup/Outgroup Rejection On Behavior And Physiology, Hannah Rose Lentfer Jan 2019

Effects Of Political Ingroup/Outgroup Rejection On Behavior And Physiology, Hannah Rose Lentfer

Honors Program Theses

Previous research shows that both exclusion and intergroup threat can increase prejudice and biological markers such as cortisol. Exclusion from an outgroup should increase prejudice and cortisol more than similar interactions in an ingroup since it incorporates both exclusion and intergroup threat. Change in cortisol and prejudice was examined in fifty participants who were excluded by either a politically-based ingroup or outgroup. Two t-tests were conducted to examine the change in a) cortisol and b) prejudice as a function of experimental ingroup/outgroup conditions. Additional analyses were also conducted to further explore cortisol changes and similarity. Cortisol increased more in participants …

The Relation Between Disordered Eating, Stress, And Anxiety In First-Year College Women, Jenna K. Anderson Jan 2019

The Relation Between Disordered Eating, Stress, And Anxiety In First-Year College Women, Jenna K. Anderson

Honors Program Theses

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses which can impact any individual. Although they can negatively affect anyone, they disproportionately affect young women. The same is true for individuals with disordered eating. Disordered eating is more common than clinical eating disorders. The term disordered eating refers to subclinical eating disturbances. Past research has demonstrated a relation between disordered eating, stress, and anxiety. The current study expands upon this by examining these variables in first-year college-enrolled women. Participants were n=99 first-year college women who filled out the DASS-21, the EDE-Q, and a demographics questionnaire. Based on previous results, it was hypothesized that …

The Impact Of Chronic Poverty On Children's Behavioral Health And Learning Outcomes, Anna Catherine Rasmussen Jan 2019

The Impact Of Chronic Poverty On Children's Behavioral Health And Learning Outcomes, Anna Catherine Rasmussen

Honors Program Theses

Chronic poverty is an unfortunate reality many children face every day. The current literature review evaluated the impact poverty has on children’s behavioral health and learning outcomes. Research consistently shows that children living in poverty experience higher rates of conduct problems, such as Conduct Disorder (CD), as well as increased learning problems, such as Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and diminished academic success. There are several theories for this relation, encompassing both environmental and biological influences, which are reviewed herein. The overall conclusion is that living in poverty negatively impacts children’s behavioral and learning outcomes.

The Anthropological Significance Of Knockloon Hill, Emma Rosentrater Jan 2019

The Anthropological Significance Of Knockloon Hill, Emma Rosentrater

Honors Program Theses

Some of the most intriguing mysteries in archaeology surround monuments that are all that remains of cultures that have left almost no record of their existence. Their beliefs have been lost to the ages and the purpose of the monuments they built along with them. Yet with proper analysis, it may be possible to learn about a site’s purpose and significance in the society in which it was built. One site in particular is Knockloon Hill in County Clare, Ireland (fig. 1 &2). Though it may not be as grand or impressive as other sites, it may hold the key …

Where Was I?: Engagement Strategies For Students With Attention Deficit Disorders, Brenna L. Herrmann Jan 2019

Where Was I?: Engagement Strategies For Students With Attention Deficit Disorders, Brenna L. Herrmann

Honors Program Theses

Throughout my time in the elementary classroom I have been flooded with instances where my cooperating teacher or I, myself, have struggled with students who are inattentive or disruptive during class. This not only makes it difficult for that specific student to learn, but also has the possibility of preventing others from learning. My most memorable experience of teaching students like this has been with a brilliant student who was clinically diagnosed and medicated for the hyperactive subset of attention deficit disorders, more well-known as ADHD. The following thesis is the research and creation of strategies to help teach students …

Tangled Twilight. Destiny, Horror, And Transformation In Nature: American Culture Of Progress During The Vietnam War 1965-1975, Alexander Newkirk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This work is an exploration of shifting American attitudes toward key cultural myths during and after the Vietnam War from 1965-1975. Using sources such as memoir, film, and relevant historiography of the time this thesis emphasizes an exploration of the shifting attitudes of Americans during the Cold War. An epoch defined by a “utopian” vision of American history that was codified in a Post War period. This included a tradition of enlightenment values, liberal consensus, a technocratic order, and a deep abiding myth in progress. While this period has been extensively studied, I suggest there has not been enough attention …

"Half-Breeds," Squatters, Land Speculators, And Settler Colonialism In The Des Moines-Mississippi Confluence, Matthew Hill Jan 2019

"Half-Breeds," Squatters, Land Speculators, And Settler Colonialism In The Des Moines-Mississippi Confluence, Matthew Hill

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Americans are accustomed to a standard historical version of American expansion: The United States pushed West, removing Indians in its wake and filled the land with American settlers. This is often seen as a form of settler colonialism. Westward expansion and settler colonialism were much more complicated. They often occurred on the periphery of the American centralized state, proceeding any serious government involvement, and involved a wide mix of culturally indeterminate people. This paper examines westward expansion in the Des Moines-Mississippi Confluence, a 119,000-acre region in what is now southeastern Iowa. At one time or another, Sauk and Meskwaki Indians, …

Financial advisors often play a substantial role in helping their clients understand the complex policies related to charitable giving. As the experts, financial advisors play an important consultative role in making sense of the benefits that can come as a result of charitable giving.

The purpose of this study was to explore how financial advisors work with clients in …

Beyond "Born This Way": Reconsidering Trans Narratives, Ashley Elizabeth Meyers Jan 2019

Beyond "Born This Way": Reconsidering Trans Narratives, Ashley Elizabeth Meyers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

When most Americans hear the words “trans” or “transgender”, celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner, Chaz Bono, or Laverne Cox likely come to mind along with their highly public stories of medical and social transition. While these celebrity representations have served to increase visibility for the trans community throughout the United States over the past decade, trans representation remains limited in terms of intersectionality and a narrow focus on celebrity stories and themes of essentialization, dysphoria, and medical transition. At the same time, research on trans narratives also remains focused almost exclusively on trans women and men who experience dysphoria and undergo …

Resign!!!: Acrimony And Protest On President Trump's @Realdonaldtrump Twitter Account, Saman Talib

Iowa Journal of Communication

A major feature of the Trump election and presidency is President Trump's use of Twitter. He has used @realdonaldtrump, his personal Twitter account, to state policy positions, berate various people, and even announce firings. While news coverage focuses on President Trump's tweets, the account itself has been and continues to be the recipient of copious numbers of negative posts from ordinary citizens. The court 's designation of this Twitter account as a 'designated public space' and the large number of negative posts warrants a closer examination of these tweets. This study employed the grounded theory method to analyze the account …

The Rhetoric Of Rhetorical Reactance: Pork Producers' Responses To The Animal Activist Movement, Kathleen German, Adam Rottinghaus Jan 2019

The Rhetoric Of Rhetorical Reactance: Pork Producers' Responses To The Animal Activist Movement, Kathleen German, Adam Rottinghaus

Iowa Journal of Communication

Animal activists made inroads against the fur industry, laboratory research, veal production, and horse slaughter during the 1980s and 1990s. While pork producers were not directly targeted, they nevertheless reacted, perceiving a dire threat to their own industry and a bleak future for pork production. This fear was magnified by their sense that activists were supported by a broad population of non/armers who were naively susceptible to irrational and emotional appeals. This case study points out the complexity of public discourse rippling outward from the animal rights movement. As animal activists raised their voices against fur ranchers, animal researchers, and …

Why? Because I Like You: Effects Of Familiarity On Perceptions Of Media Trustworthiness, Stephanie G. Shartel Dunn Jan 2019

Why? Because I Like You: Effects Of Familiarity On Perceptions Of Media Trustworthiness, Stephanie G. Shartel Dunn

Iowa Journal of Communication

Familiarity and parasocial relationships (PSR) play a definitive role on perceptions of trustworthiness and credibility. In this study, the role PSR play in the evaluation of political commentators is tested. Research presented demonstrates familiarity and PSR allow commentators to cultivate perceptions of trustworthiness and overcome retraction/corrective messages. Findings suggest increased familiarity and higher PSR generate more positive message evaluations, higher assessments of source credibility, and increased likelihood of persuasion.

The Dilemma Of Being Colin Kaepernick: An Examination Of The #Takeaknee Protest Using Heider's Balance Theory, Ashley A. Hanna Edwards, M. Elizabeth Thorpe Jan 2019

The Dilemma Of Being Colin Kaepernick: An Examination Of The #Takeaknee Protest Using Heider's Balance Theory, Ashley A. Hanna Edwards, M. Elizabeth Thorpe

Iowa Journal of Communication

Colin Kaepernick and the #takeaknee protest have been simultaneously criticized and praised. Critics argue that Kaepernick disrespects veterans and the country, while supporters suggest he is an advocate for social justice in the mistreatment of people of color, particularly by law enforcement. Beyond partisan politics, this paper shows that critics and supporters alike are evaluating Kaepernick's protest on the basis of perceived consistency between his identity and behavior. Drawing on Heider 's balance theory, we argue that individuals who focus on Kaepernick 's identity as a professional athlete will be critical of the protest because it is out of balance …

The Influence Of Goals On Sexual Initiation, Shawna Harris Jan 2019

The Influence Of Goals On Sexual Initiation, Shawna Harris

Iowa Journal of Communication

In an effort to utilize theory to understand sexual communication, this study examined if the Goals-Plans-Actions Theory's conceptualization of goals would relate to the use of direct and indirect sexual initiation strategies. We surveyed 111 participants and asked them to identify the salient goals and strategies used when initiating sex with a partner. Although relational resource goals and identity goals were rated high, they had no effect on the use of direct or indirect initiation strategies. However, the primary goal of having sex and conversation management goals positively correlated with the use of direct and indirect initiation strategies.
