Can Doing Good Reduce Risk? Corporate Social Responsibility And Risk For Firms In Controversial Industries, Emily Iehl Apr 2020

Can Doing Good Reduce Risk? Corporate Social Responsibility And Risk For Firms In Controversial Industries, Emily Iehl

Major Themes in Economics

A firm’s main goal is to add firm value. There are many ways to do this: increase sales, advertise, change management, and, possibly, doing good for the environment, employees, and others. The latter approach is often called corporate social responsibility. This paper tests to see if corporate social responsibility will reduce risk for a firm. There are two hypotheses created by Jo and Na (2012): the risk reduction hypothesis and the window-dressing hypothesis. Jo and Na conclude that corporate social responsibility in controversial firms can help reduce firm risk. However, my results do not show that.

Students Helping Students: Creating And Evaluating A Collaborative Service Model In The Library, Theresa Westbrock, Angie Cox Apr 2020

Students Helping Students: Creating And Evaluating A Collaborative Service Model In The Library, Theresa Westbrock, Angie Cox

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

This study identifies the successes and challenges associated with the addition of a nonlibrary service desk in a university library’s learning commons. The authors wanted to know whether a training and service collaboration with an outside unit could reliably and efficiently connect students to the librarians, academic support services, and other resources that they need; and if advanced skills (including information literacy) training could be successfully built into the existing infrastructure of academic support departments. The authors identified strategies to address barriers when maintaining and improving a collaborative relationship and a dual-desk service model.

Using Adapted Primary Science Literature To Enhance Argumentation And Reasoning Skills In Middle School Students, Betsy Wiederin Lemus Apr 2020

Using Adapted Primary Science Literature To Enhance Argumentation And Reasoning Skills In Middle School Students, Betsy Wiederin Lemus

Graduate Research Papers

Adapted primary literature is literature adapted from primary scientific literature for the purpose of using it with school age students. The process begins with teachers finding an appropriate primary scientific literature article, written by scientists for scientists, and rewriting the article to meet the reading level and understanding of the students being taught. In the newly created article, a teacher focuses only on the part of the original article that is important to the students learning and the writer may add background information, graphics, or edit existing graphics to make them more student friendly. The goal of this project is …

Tracing The Development Of Literacy Practices For Integrating Interdisciplinary Curriculum In Higher Education: Interactional Ethnographic Study, Monaliza Maximo Chian Apr 2020

Tracing The Development Of Literacy Practices For Integrating Interdisciplinary Curriculum In Higher Education: Interactional Ethnographic Study, Monaliza Maximo Chian

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I present an ethnographic approach that guided multiple cycles of analysis undertaken to trace the developing history of the decisions and actions taken by the lead professor and his design team as they engaged in iterative and recursive phases of development of an interdisciplinary course of study. This study was undertaken in an undergraduate Organizational Communication Program in a public regional university in the United States over a two-year period. The goal of this study was to identify factors that were critical in developing the interdisciplinary curriculum that met the university’s and department’s learning objectives. The microethnographic …

Perceptions Of The Police: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Numeracy, Carolyn Pham Mar 2020

Perceptions Of The Police: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Numeracy, Carolyn Pham

Research in the Capitol

The public’s perceptions of the police are critical; positive perceptions are related to people’s willingness to obey the law and cooperate with law enforcement. Past research has found that demographic variables are related to perceptions of the police. This study hypothesizes that those with a higher level of need for cognition and numeracy are more likely to view the police positively. This study included 443 U.S. residents; in addition to replicating the role of demographic variables, this study found that after controlling for demographics, perceptions of the police were positively related to need for cognition and numeracy. This study also …

Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas Mar 2020

Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas

Research in the Capitol

From “multi-” to “hyper-” spectral, remote sensing capacities have improved tremendously in how we measure Earth’s unique signatures. Unfortunately, shadow detection and correction remain an issue in most images, especially those with high spatial resolution. Shadows result when direct sun light is obstructed and the spectral reflectance values for pixels in those regions decrease. Many successful approaches exist to correct this blue skew to shorter wavelengths, but it can be daunting to truly assess which approach to employ since each require different levels of priori knowledge. This research attempts to generate and cross-validate shadow masks using popular GIS software. The goal …

Characterization Of A New Mtdna Minicircle In A Chewing Louse, Geomydoecus Aurei, Ashley L. Campbell, Dino Bolic, James W. Demastes, Theresa A. Spradling Mar 2020

Characterization Of A New Mtdna Minicircle In A Chewing Louse, Geomydoecus Aurei, Ashley L. Campbell, Dino Bolic, James W. Demastes, Theresa A. Spradling

Research in the Capitol

The mitochondrion, an organelle responsible for generating cellular energy, is unlike the majority of organelles in animal cells. Because of its symbiotic origins, the mitochondrion contains its own genetic information (mtDNA) that is predominantly maternally inherited. In most animals, the mitochondrial DNA is arranged in one circular chromosome containing 13 protein coding genes, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs. In Geomydoecus aurei, a chewing louse, these same genes have been disbursed among at least 13 independent minicircle chromosomes. We have worked to map this atypical genome to gain insights into its development and to further understanding of genomic rearrangements in this …

Poisons In Romeo And Juliet, Jenna Bauch Mar 2020

Poisons In Romeo And Juliet, Jenna Bauch

Research in the Capitol

Throughout this experience with dramaturgy, I plan to extensively conclude the identity of the type of poison that Romeo used to kill himself in Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo and Juliet. I plan to do this based on four essential qualities of the poison. Due to evidence from the text, the poison must be fast acting, readily available in the 16th century, contain a high toxicity within a low amount (enough to fit inside a small vile), and water soluble. Another challenge will be determining the level of importance of each quality as it pertains to the poison. I will be …

Base & Summit: American Women's Right On Either Side Of The Passing Of The 19th Amendment, Abigail Fer Mar 2020

Base & Summit: American Women's Right On Either Side Of The Passing Of The 19th Amendment, Abigail Fer

Research in the Capitol

The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 --allowing women to vote in the United States--was a watershed moment in the history of women's rights, but what were the rights of women before this important amendment? My project compares the legal rights of women across the United States from 1900 to 1920 in three key areas: wages/industry, family law & divorce rights, and property law. Because I conducted this research project for the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home and Museum, this analysis gives special consideration to Midwestern states--particularly Iowa women and property rights. My project sheds light on the …

Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass Mar 2020

Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass

Research in the Capitol

Death is a taboo subject in American society, yet it affects everyone at some point in life. By looking at conversations surrounding death from a sociological perspective, I study the association between conversations about death and the grief of those left behind. Using the Changing Lives of Older Couples dataset, I am conducting a secondary data analysis to study the relationship between talking about death with a spouse before death, and the denial and mental health impacts on the widow after death. By understanding how conversations about death may be related to positive or negative outcomes, we can better support …
