Likewise many of the phenomena appearing in connection with the resistance of crystal contacts are considered as unique. In the second volume of his Theory of Sound, Lord Rayleigh presents a method for determining mathematically the intensity of sound at very great distances from a rigid sphere, the source of sound being confined to a small area on its surface. Prof. G.W. Stewart has extended the work of Rayleigh and has calculated the relative sound intensities for sets of points lying on circles concentric with the sphere, the planes of these circles also passing through the source of sound. This research has for its general object to inquire into the physical condition of substances in near-saturated aqueous solution. The subject was attacked by means of experiments at different temperatures on the apparent specific volume in solution; by which is meant, the volume of that amount of solution which contains one gram of the solute, minus the natural volume of the water contained therein. This quantity is always somewhat less than the volume of the solid solute.

Forty million dollars is the estimated loss annually to the United States on account of weeds, according to Prof. Beal, member of the Department of Agriculture. That a generous share of this loss belongs to Iowa we must all admit, for Iowa is a great agricultural state. During the summer of 1911, the writer made a detailed study of the nesting habits of the Brown Thrasher which covered a considerable part of the nesting period. The report of this study was published in the Wilson Bulletin. During the summer of 1912 the writer made one full day's observations on a nest of the same species under somewhat different circumstances, such that some additional conclusions are reached regarding the nestling food.

The Mission-Michael Faraday has been called the greatest experimental scientist of all ages. No one who has read the biography of this eminent man of science will be inclined to dispute such a statement. Faraday was interested in all phases of scientific thought but devoted his energies particularly to chemical and electrical research. It is no exaggeration to say that he created modern industrial electricity. His experimental researches covered a period of forty-four years. The mere list of the titles of his papers fills several pages in the scientific catalog published by the Royal Society.

Much has been done, during the past few years, in determining the food habits of the various species of birds by means of stomach examinations. With a sufficient number of specimens, this method should give accurate information. Because of the time and patience required, and the difficulties to be overcome, little has been done by means of personal observation of the individuals in the field. During the past few years, it has been a matter of considerable interest to me, to follow up the reports of laboratory examinations of stomachs by personal observation, especially of the birds of prey.

In October, 1911, a student at Grinnell College, Miss Winnie Gilbert, brought in a specimen of the pink stink-horn, Simblum sphaerocephalum Schlecht. It was found on the north bank of a deep railroad cut, a mile west of town. Further search in this place resulted in the collection of several mature specimens and a number of "eggs." They grew about half way up the slope, facing south, on Marshall silt loam that had slid down the bank, and about at the level of the boundary between the loess and the glacial drift. During the fall of 1907 Mr. James Ward of Britt, Iowa, sent to the Coe College Museum a hawk of the Genus Buteo, that, because of its color, was difficult to identify. It was so similar to a specimen seen by the writer in the collection of mounted birds at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, that at the suggestion of Mr. W. E. C. Todd of the Carnegie Museum at Pittsburg, it was sent to Mr. Robert Ridgway of the National Museum at Washington, where both these gentlemen affirmed that it is a Broad Winged Hawk in melanistic plumage.

For a number of years the writer has been interested in insect parasitism and its relation to the control of injurious insects. Occasional notes have been made on different species of parasites and considerable interesting data has been obtained concerning the parasites of one of our common Iowa insects, the "tomato-worm," Phlegethontius sexta (Johanssen), sometimes called the "tobacco worm" or the "southern tobacco worm." It is with certain parasites of this particular insect with which this paper has to deal.

Students of plant and animal distribution are naturally interested in exact geographic designation, and they frequently suffer inconvenience from the inaccuracy or misconception of locality names. Confusion in our western records sometimes arises because the earlier explorers worked in an unsettled wilderness in which accurate geographic designation was difficult or impossible, and again from the fact that names were often at first applied to larger areas than those to which the name is at present restricted.

While making a study of the Keokuk beds in southeastern Iowa during the field season of 1911, the writer was attracted by certain irregularities at the contact of those beds with the overlying strata. The Keokuk, instead of being followed always by the Warsaw, which is the normal order, was found to be succeeded above sometimes by a dense, white, fine-grained, non-fossiliferous limestone, and sometimes by a fossiliferous magnesian limestone or by an arenaceous phase into which it grades laterally.

Sometime ago while filing away the surface of the selenium in a Giltay cell in order to find out directly certain limits on the depth of penetration of selenium by light, I discovered a new effect. This effect of mechanical rupture on light-positive selenium resembles in a general way the many other well-known effects in these varieties of selenium. Rupture produces an increase in the conductivity, but this increase is not permanent. The recovery is extremely slow, often requiring more than a month for the selenium to attain the electrical condition existing before rupture. The experiments are especially interesting because …

When the catalogue of the recent mammals of Iowa was compiled, (See Proc. Ia. Ac. Science, Vol. XVII, pps. 211 to 218), no record of the Western Harvest Mouse, (Reithrodontomys dychei Allen), could be found for this state, but because they were known to be common in eastern Kansas, they were included as likely to be found in Iowa. In making a study of the fauna of a limited region near Atlantic, I have found them to be abundant there, equaling the common white footed mouse. The flora of the high prairie is peculiarly devoid of mosses and ferns. Excessive insolation and evaporation are prime causes of this. By the usual test for radioactivity, i.e., the continued ionization of a gas independent of other physical conditions, sodium as an element does not display any activity that is definitely greater than that found in all matter. And the ionizing activity of ordinary matter is so slight that it cannot be stated with definiteness whether or not the matter is of itself radioactive. But radioactivity implies a more fundamental change than that of emitting matter and energy continuously. It implies an atomis disintegration.
