Determination Of Purity Of Liquid Isomers By X-Ray Diffraction, G. W. Stewart
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Previous contributions have been made by the writer and Professor Skinner on the isomers of primary normal alcohols and by the writer on normal paraffins. The difference between the normal compounds and isomers are shown by displacements of the chief diffraction peak in amounts indicated by increases in the mean diameter of the molecule. The diameters of the normal alcohols and of the normal paraffins have been found and published.

There seems to be no doubt in reference to the existence of carbon chains in organic compounds, but the arrangements of the carbon atoms and the dimensions of the chains are much in doubt. In connection with x-ray diffraction in liquids it has been possible to make measurements of interest on the paraffin, the alcohol and the fatty acid chains.

A convenient form of carbon arc for experimental and other work may be constructed at small cost in the following manner. Two straight arc-carbons of suitable size are mounted vertically side by side and parallel and separated by two or three millimeters. These carbons are connected to a 110-volt circuit with a resistance of 5 to 10 ohms, more or less, in series. If now the gap between the upper ends of the carbons is momentarily bridged by another carbon rod, an arc will form and remain when the short-circuiting carbon rod is removed.

Using the general formula for the absorption of a homogeneous beam of x-rays, I= Ioe-μt. Hull has arrived at an expression which gives the total intensity of the scattered radiation that emerges from any scattering substance of thickness t. This total intensity becomes a maximum when t = 1/µ.

A study was made of the value of the new type examinations in classes aggregating 64 students, of whom 28 were Juniors and 36 were Sophomores in the College of Liberal Arts of Western Union College. Four of the eight forms of new type questions were used as described by Paterson.

The thesis in which this paper had its inception is founded in the proposition that in explaining the nature of hearing, it is extraneous to consider the complex or compounded wave as a synthesis of partials; that reference to the nature of the complex wave itself is adequate. A series of experiments has been conducted with a large number of accurately constructed siren discs. When two holes are cut upon a disc with a space between them corresponding to one-thirty-sixth of the circumference, for example, and the disc is rotated at a rate of not less than one r.p.s., a …

This study was undertaken for the purpose of discovering any items in the records of the Department of Physical Education for Men (at the University of Iowa) which might be of significance in relation to scholastic attainment. The technique employed involved a comparison of the two extremes in scholastic standing among the freshman men of the College of Liberal Arts for the academic year 1925-26. The records of the 52 men receiving the highest grades and the 54 men receiving the lowest grades in the entire freshman class were considered.

This is a report of a study of some relationships between scholastic efficiency and certain motor skills. Three questions were asked: 1. Do the motor abilities of the scholastically superior student differ from those of the members of the same class whose academic work is inferior? 2. How far do mechanisms of central control account for such differences as exist? 3. What is the significance of these differences as related to scholastic superiority? Studies devoted to scientific appraisal of specific methods, however, are few in number. In a previous study of the beating complex by the writer two electrically driven tuning forks having frequencies of 256 d.v. and 244 d.v. respectively were used as the source of the tones. The intensities of the two tones could be valued independently from maximum to minimum by means of rheostats. The sound was conducted to the observer in a sound proof room by means of rubber tubes. In general fatigue is introspectively describable in terms of kinaesthetic relaxation and low attentive ebb of ideas with an affective aspect of indifference, sometimes bordering on mild pleasantness. Galvanic responses taken by both the Hathaway apparatus and a highly sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer show marked individual differences with a general tendency toward lower bodily resistance under fatigue. Two types of fatigue are distinguished: cognitive fatigue and bodily or physical fatigue. Under some experimental conditions both types may be combined. The galvanometric response varies with each type. Muscular fatigue, due probably to continued residual twitchings and tremblings, tends to show increased response, …

Since the establishment of the first preschool psychological laboratory in 1921, the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station has been conducting, as one part of the program in the mental development of young children, a series of experiments that have been repeated, extended and amplified from year to year. These experiments have been planned to afford detailed analyses of performance and the evaluation of psychological processes rather than test standards or the clinical diagnosis of a particular child.

White grubs with their heavy damage to corn, timothy, blue grass, potatoes and strawberries cause one of the largest items of losses due to insects on the farms of Iowa. This loss attains its maximum each third year when "Brood A" of the white grubs is in its most destructive stage. The spring and summer of 1927 was one of these times. During and following the period of damage a thorough, comprehensive survey was made to determine the extent of the infested area and relative seriousness of the attack.
