Considerable criticism has recently been directed against the commonly accepted methods of teaching Biology in our secondary school and colleges. John Burroughs once re- marked that he had never dissected an animal and was glad of it, implying by this, I take it, that we do not learn Nature by dissecting her children. A photometer is arranged in such manner that the screen and the lamp tested are stationary, the standard lamp being adjusted in distance to effect a balance. If the standard is moved by means of a band running over a wheel conveniently near the screen this wheel will revolve through an angle proportional to the distance the standard is moved.

To our knowledge the first time this "Bird's Nest" marking was considered as a possible ring of absorbing nebulosity was in 1910 when the senior author noticed the object and mentioned the possibility that it might be an actual ring of dark absorbing nebulosity. The ring is conspicuously evident upon every exposure of long enough duration to exhibit such markings. It is located in the "Labrador" section of the North America Nebula, right ascension 20 hours, 52 minutes, declination plus 45 degrees. Its external diameter is about thirty minutes of arc and its internal diameter about twelve minutes of arc.

An Experimental Study Of Variations In Breath Pressure In The Vocal Vibrato, J. H. Tiffin

This problem constitutes a part of the experimental work in the psychology of music whose ultimate aim is to discover the objective criteria for artistic performance in vocal and instrumental music. Metfessel has shown, by making graphic representations of the voices of several famous singers, that artistic vocal production almost invariably contains a vibrato, which may be defined as a frequency-intensity fluctuation occurring in a regular periodicity usually not more than eight and one-half times or less than five and one-half times per second, and seldom covering a range of more than one full tone.

Color photography by the screen-plate method belongs to the additive processes. The principle is based upon the fact that all color variations can be obtained by the mixing of the three primary colors - red, green and blue. Determinations of the Thomson coefficient of single crystals of zinc have been made by the method of Nettleton. For all orientations the coefficient increases with rising temperature (range 50- 200 C). The variation of the coefficient for a single temperature (60° C) as a function of crystal orientation was discussed.
