The aeronautic field has as its champion, Colonel Lindberg; the Peace Federation has as its champion, Ishbell McDonald; but where is the youthful champion of the field of chemical science? In this day of scientific advancement, a champion is surely needed to bring t h e achievement of chemical science to the people. Someone has said, "Science is the Creator's chest of tools. Human progress is man's learning to use these tools."

In the discussion of simple machines it is best to begin with the lever and the wheel and axle. Both of these simple machines give us a practical illustration of the principle of moments. The lever is the simpler and clearer illustration and usually presents little difficulty to a student body. The wheel and axle is a device which can be considered to be a continuously acting lever in which the radius of the wheel is the force or effort arm and the radius of the axle is the resistance arm.

According to the traditional arrangement of subject matter in textbooks on high school physics, it is customary to introduce the treatment of mechanics of so-lids by beginning with the subject of motion, force, and Newton's laws of motion. This at once leads the immature student into a labyrinth of abstract conceptions that is generally disheartening. It would show better judgment on the part of the teacher to begin the subject of mechanics with material that is more concrete to the student and which is continually before him in his environment.

Mrs. Jiggs, in the cartoon, "Bringing up Father," frequently calls her husband an insect. This is a flagrant misuse of the term as an insect never has fewer nor more than six legs. It may be wingless as are the bedbugs, two winged as are all flies, or four winged as the grasshoppers, but no normal insect ever has more or less than six legs and by this one positive character you may know them.

In cases too numerous to cite, the home econ- omics teacher, the mathematics teacher, the physics teacher, the English teacher, - in fact anyone who is so unfortunate as to have one period of the day unfilled by his or her own special subject, - Is likely to have that foundling child, commercial geography, left on the doorstep.
