The Status Of The Biological Sciences In The High Schools Of Iowa, C. W. Lantz Jan 1930

The Status Of The Biological Sciences In The High Schools Of Iowa, C. W. Lantz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the germination tests of alfalfa seed in the spring of 1930, one seed was discovered with two embryos. They were both normal in all structures, equal in size and behaved normally in germination. Multiple embryo sacs in the ovules of alfalfa are frequent, but it has been supposed that not more than one is able to mature and function. The presence of two embryos is evidence that two embryo sacs may mature and function.

Identification Of Symphoricarpus Occidentalis, Florence D. Smith Jan 1930

Identification Of Symphoricarpus Occidentalis, Florence D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1823 Robert Brown used the name Symphoria occidentalis in John Richardson's "Botanical Appendix to the 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea' by Captain John Franklin." Brown did not make the name valid by description or illustration. William Jackson Hooker, ten years later, in his "Flora Boreali Americana" first used the combination Symphoricarpus occidentalis which we now accept, and established the name by the following (translated) description: "With the corolla inside and the lobes densely hairy; with the style and stamens sub-exserted."

Germination And Seedling Forms Of Some Woody Plants, L. H. Pammel, C. M. King Jan 1930

Germination And Seedling Forms Of Some Woody Plants, L. H. Pammel, C. M. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The seeds and seedlings used in the studies presented in this paper, were collected in southern states and Cuba by L. H. Pammel, during the winter of 1929-1930. Several of the seedlings were observed in native situations and described in the field. Seeds collected, were planted in the greenhouse at Ames. The germination of those which grew is described in the following paper.

Base Exchange Between Dyes And Soils, Wilbur L. Hoff, J. A. Wilkinson Jan 1930

Base Exchange Between Dyes And Soils, Wilbur L. Hoff, J. A. Wilkinson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beaumont, Rohland and Wilkinson and Hoff have shown the effect of acidity and alkalinity of solutions on the adsorption of dyes by soils. Ashley found that during the adsorption of basic dyes by soils the dyes exchanged some of their positive ions for the metal ions of the soil thus fixing some of the dye by base-exchange. Wilkinson and Hoff found that a methylene blue solution liberates more calcium and magnesium from a soil than does distilled water alone. Sante Mattson found in the case of two soils that the methylene blue adsorbed was approximately equivalent to the monovalent and …

The Heats Of Adsorption Of Organic Vapors On Charcoal At 25° And 50°, J. N. Pearce, G. H. Reed Jan 1930

The Heats Of Adsorption Of Organic Vapors On Charcoal At 25° And 50°, J. N. Pearce, G. H. Reed

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The heats of adsorption of carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, and ethyl chloride were determined by the method of Pearce and McKinley. The effect of temperature on the molecular heats of adsorption is very small. The molecular heats of adsorption, ranging from 12.1 kilogram calories for methylene chloride to 15.4 kilogram calories for carbon tetrachloride, seem to increase with the number of substituted chlorine atoms in the molecule.

The Adsorption Of Certain Vapors By Activated Charcoal, J. N. Pearce, Paul E. Peters Jan 1930

The Adsorption Of Certain Vapors By Activated Charcoal, J. N. Pearce, Paul E. Peters

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Isotherms for the adsorption of ethane, propane, dimethyl ether and diethyl ether by activated charcoal were obtained at temperatures from 0° to 183° and at pressures varying from less than l mm. to about 1 atm. With the hydrocarbons equilibrium was attainable only after long periods of time. The isotherms for the hydrocarbons are in general almost rectilinear; those for the ethers have the usual form. At low temperatures the isotherms for the hydrocarbons show a peculiar type of break in the curve. The amount of vapor adsorbed decreases with an increase in the complexity of the adsorbed molecules. Semi-log …

The Adsorption Of Chromate Ions By Colloidal Aluminum Hydroxide, Ben H. Peterson, Kieth H. Storks Jan 1930

The Adsorption Of Chromate Ions By Colloidal Aluminum Hydroxide, Ben H. Peterson, Kieth H. Storks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A stable suspension of Aluminum Hydroxide was prepared by electro-dialysis of the precipitate formed by the reaction between Aluminum Chloride and Ammonium Hydroxide. Increasing quantities of a solution of potassium chromate solution were added to equal quantities of the suspension and the quantity adsorbed determined by titrating the residual solution with standard ferrous sulphate. At the concentrations below that required for complete coagulation, the suspensiod was removed by ultrafiltration.

Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Furfural, Ralph L. Van Peursem

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study was made of the possibility of producing the reduction products of furfural by passing its vapor, with an excess of hydrogen, over finely divided catalyst.

Some Physical Properties Of Concentrated Aqueous Salt Solutions, J. N. Pearce, Mildred A. Hooper Jan 1930

Some Physical Properties Of Concentrated Aqueous Salt Solutions, J. N. Pearce, Mildred A. Hooper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The densities and refractive indices were determined at 25° for solutions of the halides of some of the alkali metals, over a concentration range from 0.1 molal to almost saturation. The partial molal volumes were calculated by differentiating the equations of the volume-molality curves. From the refractive index the specific refractivity of the solution and of the solute were calculated. The specific refractivity of the solute was found to be constant throughout the concentrations studied. Using an equation derived by Hückel, involving the refractive index, the dielectric constants of the solutions were calculated.

Some Observations On The Relation Of The Composition Of The Diet To Lactation, P. D. Wilkinson, V. E. Nelson Jan 1930

Some Observations On The Relation Of The Composition Of The Diet To Lactation, P. D. Wilkinson, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The previous paper reports a series of experiments in which three different varieties of soy beans were fed to rats at levels from ten to seventy-three and three tenths percent as the sole source of vitamins B and G. Normal growth was observed on all the levels of each variety of soy bean. The high mortality of the adults on the ten percent level of Virginia soy bean indicated a border line supply of vitamins B and G. Satisfactory lactation was not obtained on any of the experiments where soy beans were included in the diet as the only sources …

The Baking Temperature Of Bread, O. B. Read Jan 1930

The Baking Temperature Of Bread, O. B. Read

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation is to study the temperature of a loaf of bread during the baking process. In the study of fermentation and its application to the rising and baking of bread the questions arose; how high a temperature is attained inside the loaf, is the rise of temperature uniform, or are there points of rapid change. It was thought as the boiling temperature of alcohol was approached or passed some noticeable temperature change might occur. Also that as the crust on the bread was formed and became more rigid thus having a tendency to exert pressure on …

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey Dec 1929

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey

Science Bulletin

In an examination of recent texts in general science one is impressed by the place given to a discussion and study of air in its various phases and applications. The expression "air minded" does not apply in this connection, but perhaps it holds true that a great amount of interest is always developed in pupils whenever we introduce the subject.

A Classified Bibliography Of References For General Agriculture, Winfield Scott Dec 1929

A Classified Bibliography Of References For General Agriculture, Winfield Scott

Science Bulletin

Most teachers are exceedingly busy with their regular duties in the school. This leaves but little time to look up references or for that matter to plan the work once the school year has begun. Their success is largely determined by the preparation which has been made before the school year opens. The following references have been prepared for these busy teachers who would like to enrich their courses in agriculture, but who do not have time to study or select references.

Exhibits As An Aid In Teaching, O. B. Read Dec 1929

Exhibits As An Aid In Teaching, O. B. Read

Science Bulletin

Complaint is often made that science subjects are difficult to teach. Many feel they are so abstract that there is nothing tangible with which to start. Since most of our industrial products are now very closely controlled by physical principles and chemical processes, it ought not to be difficult in the study of these subjects to arouse interest by calling attention to their uses in the industrial process.

Living Material In The Laboratory, O. R. Clark Dec 1929

Living Material In The Laboratory, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

Living plants and animals serve as valuable aids in stimulating interest in the biology course and, during that part of the year when field trips are impossible, provide material for the study of habits and the relation of organisms to their environment. Laboratory conditions are of course artificial but they should be made as nearly natural as it is possible to make them.

Teaching The History Of Science Dec 1929

Teaching The History Of Science

Science Bulletin

Science has contributed more to our comfort, well being, and happiness than any other branch of knowledge. The other branches of knowledge are now taking the scientific method for the solving of their problems. Is it not important that science teachers should find some place in their teaching to teach some of the history of the development of science?

Heat, L. Begeman Nov 1929

Heat, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

The subject of heat as discussed in most texts in general science involves only the most elementary concepts as regards its theory. As a rule the following topics are the leading ones: - sources of heat, thermometry, methods of heat transmission, effect of heat, and a number of the common everyday practical applications of heat.

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott Nov 1929

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Biologically speaking, insects may be called a highly successful group, and much of this success is due to their adaptability to the conditions of their environment. They are found everywhere, and eat almost everything. All of the large groups of insects are world-wide in their distribution, though the most widely distributed are the beetles.
