Condensation Of P-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde With Vanillalacetone Substitution Products, Margaret M. Cooper, L. Chas. Raiford
Condensation Of P-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde With Vanillalacetone Substitution Products, Margaret M. Cooper, L. Chas. Raiford
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In previous work1 it was found that when the hydrazones of unsymmetrical dibenzalacetones rearrange to the isomeric pyrazolines, the closing of the ring involved the unsaturation farthest away from the phenyl nucleus containing the halogen or nitro radical. Since these substituents are often spoken of as "negative" in character, it was decided to test the behavior of compounds containing substituents that might be regarded as "positive." To this end there has been prepared a series of unsymmetrical ketones in which one of the groups is the p-dimethylaminobenzal radical, and the other is a substituted vanillal residue. These ketones will …
The Action Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Glycolic Acid, Harry Shipley Fry, Kenneth L. Milstead
The Action Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Glycolic Acid, Harry Shipley Fry, Kenneth L. Milstead
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In a previous paper2 a new mechanism of reaction termed "Perhydrolysis," was proposed to account for the apparently anomalous reactions which occur when simple organic compounds are treated with hydrogen peroxide. The proposed mechanism has been confirmed by the quantitative data obtained in the case of formaldehyde, methyl alcohol, formic acid, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid. It is the object of this paper to give the results of the extension of this quantitative study to glycolic acid and to offer further evidence in support of the proposed mechanism of reaction.
A Nipissing Flora Of The Apostle Islands Region Of Wisconsin, L. R. Wilson
A Nipissing Flora Of The Apostle Islands Region Of Wisconsin, L. R. Wilson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Materials from buried peat beds in Lake Superior near the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin have been critically studied for plant fossils. The deposits are considered as contemporaneous with the one-outlet stage of Glacial Lake Nipissing. Twenty-five species of plants are recorded. These belong to the flora of the Canadian Zone and occur in the region today. A spectrum of the microfossils was also determined.

A Short Solution Of The Diophantine Equation 2x^4 - Y^4 = Z^2, J. S. Turner
A Short Solution Of The Diophantine Equation 2x^4 - Y^4 = Z^2, J. S. Turner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Let X, Y, Z be any positive integral solutions of this equation, and let H be the G.C.D. of X, Y. Then X = Hx, Y =Hy, Z = H2z, and (1) 2x4 - y4 = z2, where x, y, z are odd and co-prime in pairs. Hence it suffices to find primitive solutions x, y. z.

An Inexpensive Direct Current Amplifier, R. D. Huntoon
An Inexpensive Direct Current Amplifier, R. D. Huntoon
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In an attempt to increase the stable sensitivity of the direct current amplifier designed by Voorhis, it developed that the commercial tube, type 2A6, is particularly suited to such work. A single 2A6 in a circuit similar to that of Sallu gave a sensitivity of 3xl0-3 amps/mm. with a galvanometer of sensitivity, 10-8 amps/mm. An arrangement with a portable microammeter and an a.c. power supply resulted in a useful portable high impedance galvanometer with a sensitivity of 10-11 amps/mm. The circuit is discussed and methods of balancing explained. It is shown that adjustments are not critical and …

The Liquid Crystalline And Isotropic States With Special Reference To Para Azoxyanisol, G. W. Stewart, H. R. Letner
The Liquid Crystalline And Isotropic States With Special Reference To Para Azoxyanisol, G. W. Stewart, H. R. Letner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Two proposals are: 1. The liquid crystal of para azoxyanisol consists of molecules lying parallel. It is strongly optically anisotropic. The transparent liquid is optically isotropic and the molecules, if there is structure, are arranged so that the molecular anisotropy cancels. 2. The nature of the liquid crystal is as just stated. The transparent liquid consists of cybotactic groups with indefinite boundaries with regularity marked within say 30 Å.u. diameter and with irregularity between the regularities. The liquid crystal probably consists of approximate like orientation of these minor groups in a group large enough to show optical anisotropy. The experiments …
The Limitations Of Present Computative Methods Of Studying Liquid Structure, George A. Boyd
The Limitations Of Present Computative Methods Of Studying Liquid Structure, George A. Boyd
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The inadequacy of the approximate method of x-ray diffraction intensity computation in the case of liquids is illustrated by computations relative to n-paraffins. Warren apparently proved, by using Zernike and Prins theory, that the structure of the liquids is hexagonal parallel packing. These computations have been repeated and extended to larger scattering angles. Similar calculations were made for the parallel packing. Conclusive proof for either array was not found. Preference, however, due to peak position, should be given to the former. The work emphasizes the need for a better theoretical approach to the problem of liquid structure in explaining the …
An Unusual Appearance Of The Cyanogen Bands, Leonard O. Olsen
An Unusual Appearance Of The Cyanogen Bands, Leonard O. Olsen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A unique formation and excitation of the CN molecule occurred in the resonance tube. (Observed in connection with the investigation of the mercury hydride molecule.) The bands which were noted belong to the 2Σ → 2Σ electronic system. The excitation has been determined to be due to collisions of the CN molecule with excited mercury atoms in the 63P state.

A Study Of Emotional Conflict On Delinquent And Non-Delinquent Boys, H. Max Houtchens
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This experiment dealt with the disorganization of responses in delinquent and non-delinquent boys by the use of the Luria Technique. This consists essentially of an instrumental and objective measurement of the affective state as it appears through disturbances in the smooth flow of a complex response to a controlled word association test. Thirty delinquent boys held by probation office and thirty non-delinquent boys with no record of court appearance were used as subjects. The age range was twelve to seventeen years. The boys were individually matched on the basis of C.A., M.A., school grade placement, school, and a rough index …

Prognostication Of College Marks By Rests Of Intelligence And Of High School Content, Willis J. Bell
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study reported by Bell at the Fairfield meeting (1929) covered several years of relationship between intelligence, grades, and class survival at Iowa Wesleyan College. A second study, reported by Miss Margaret Bell at the Davenport meeting (1931) covered intelligence and grades of men versus women students. This present and somewhat related study covers the past three years, during which time, only, this college has followed a uniform grading system; also during which time all freshmen have taken an intelligence test and also a test of high school performance. The American Council's Psychological Examination and the University of Iowa's High …
Simultaneous Records Of Gastric And Bodily Movements Of Puppies, Richard Holcomb, T. W. Richards
Simultaneous Records Of Gastric And Bodily Movements Of Puppies, Richard Holcomb, T. W. Richards
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to work out techniques for the simultaneous study of gastric and bodily movements of newborn infants. The preliminary work was done on puppies. Using an animal stabilimeter for the graphic recording of bodily activities, and the balloon technique for measurement of stomach contractions, records were obtained from two puppies. Although the number of cases was too small to permit of quantitative analysis of results, nevertheless about 600 feet of records of the two indices of behavior were secured affording an ample sampling of data for qualitative study. Techniques used are briefly described.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of the psychoneurotic inventory when given under varying conditions. The conditions chosen were the group situation and the individual interview after a definite attempt had been made to establish rapport with the subject. The subjects were forty-eight delinquent boys from two state institutions. The Woodworth-Cady Personal Data Sheet and the Bell Adjustment Inventory were used. In the oral interview six questions from the Cady and fifty-three questions from the Bell inventory were used. Results indicate a 20 to 40 per cent reversal in identical items between the two methods of …

Structural Features Of The Brain Of Lepidosteus, Carrie C. Gillaspy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The brain of the garpike presents several peculiarities which deviate considerably from the general structure of the typical fish brain, concerning which there is a marked difference of opinion amongst the various investigators or about which very little is known. The present paper presents a preliminary report about some of the interesting features of the brain of Lepidosteus. In the following discussion special attention will be given to the meninges and their relationship to the brain and to the outpushings of the diencephalon and their relationship to each other.
Some Embryonic Abnormalities Caused By X-Rays, Titus C. Evans
Some Embryonic Abnormalities Caused By X-Rays, Titus C. Evans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the course of an investigation of the effects of X-Rays on embryonic development of Melanoplus differentialis, it was noticed that abnormalities appeared in some of the individuals. More eggs were rayed, dosages comparable to those given the embryos in which abnormalities appeared, and the following observations have been made. (1) There was a critical stage for the production of abnormalities. Eggs rayed when the embryos were extremely young usually resulted in only deficiencies of various degrees. Eggs rayed when the embryos were just a few days older resulted in embryos exhibiting many abnormalities. Still older embryos produced no abnormalities …
