A Study Of The Process Of Word Discrimination In Individuals Beginning To Read, Mary Buffum Hill Jan 1935

A Study Of The Process Of Word Discrimination In Individuals Beginning To Read, Mary Buffum Hill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various recognized types of confusions in word recognition were studied in an experimental setting in which the attempt was made to isolate each as purely as possible. A critique of earlier studies in this field upon which the present study is based is involved in the experimental set-up.

Preliminary Investigation Of The Occurrence And Distribution Of Azotobacter On The Soils In Iowa, William P. Martin, R. H. Walker Jan 1935

Preliminary Investigation Of The Occurrence And Distribution Of Azotobacter On The Soils In Iowa, William P. Martin, R. H. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Berthelot in 1888 was the first to suggest that nitrogen may be added to field soils through the activity of microorganisms. In 1901 Beijerinck isolated a non-symbiotic, aerobic, nitrogen-fixing organism which he called Azotobacter chroococcum. Since this time five other species belonging to this genus have been isolated and likewise have been found capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen.

The Multinucleate Condition In Maize And Its Probable Relation To The X Bodies Associated With Mosaic Diseases, John N. Martin Jan 1935

The Multinucleate Condition In Maize And Its Probable Relation To The X Bodies Associated With Mosaic Diseases, John N. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the sterns of developing maize plants and in the young leaves two to several bodies resembling nuclei are commonly present in the majority of the cells. These bodies vary much in shape and size in the same cells. Some of them are similar to the x bodies described in maize and sugar cane affected with a mosaic disease.

An Osage Area North Of Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa, L. W. Wood Jan 1935

An Osage Area North Of Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa, L. W. Wood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Drouth conditions in southern Iowa in 1934, led the Highway Commission to undertake an unusually large number of road projects in that part of the state, in order to give the most employment where economic distress was most severe. One such project included the surfacing of secondary roads north and northeast of Mount Pleasant. In checking over material possibilities for this project, rock outcroppings along Big Creek north of Mount Pleasant were re-examined and new facts brought to light by this restudy have led to the conclusions reached in this paper.

Betts' Physiological Approach To The Analysis Of Reading Disabilities As Applied To The College Level, Donald E. Swanson Jan 1935

Betts' Physiological Approach To The Analysis Of Reading Disabilities As Applied To The College Level, Donald E. Swanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Betts has recently concluded that visual refractive errors and anomalies of binocular coordination are important causes of poor reading among first-grade entrants. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether such visual deficiencies, as revealed by Betts' tests, differentiate significantly between poor and good readers at the college level.

The Nuclear Cycle And Sexuality Of Trametes Peckii, J. E. Sass Jan 1935

The Nuclear Cycle And Sexuality Of Trametes Peckii, J. E. Sass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Trametes peckii is a heterothallic member of the Polyporaceae. The sex classes exhibit considerable irregularity, making any attempt to classify this organism as bipolar or tetrapolar highly questionable. Segregation of monosporous haplonts into "cottony" and "non-cottony" mycelia is clearly indicated. The dikaryotic secondary mycelium is always cottony, suggesting the possibility of the "dominance" of the cotton character. Repulsion between certain combinations of two mycelia of opposite sex groups, and the absence of repulsion between other pairs, resembles the phenomenon designated as "Barrage" by Vandendries. This fungus appears to exhibit three segregating characters; sex potentiality, haploid mycelial character, and repulsion.

A Study Of Student Reading, A. R. Lauer Jan 1935

A Study Of Student Reading, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A method was devised to make a plan for self improvement in reading available to persons who are not conversant with the experimental literature. This consists of a self-administered experiment in reading material ordinarily read, with suggestions on ways and means of improving the speed and comprehension. A progress graph was kept by each reader to keep up his comprehension.

A Flora Of Winneshiek And Allamakee Counties, W. L. Tolstead Jan 1935

A Flora Of Winneshiek And Allamakee Counties, W. L. Tolstead

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summers of 1933 and 1934 about 750 species of flowering plants, ferns, and mosses were collected in Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties. They have been deposited in the Herbarium of Iowa State College. The rich flora is represented by remnants of the forest and prairie which once covered the region. Many weed and exotic plants have been introduced, and a number of species reported by early collectors appear to have become extinct. Many others are becoming rare.

The Composition Of Inorganic Colloids Extracted From Three Iowa Soils, H. C. Dean, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown Jan 1935

The Composition Of Inorganic Colloids Extracted From Three Iowa Soils, H. C. Dean, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this work was to determine the colloidal content of certain soils and to make analyses of the inorganic colloids extracted from these soils. These soils ranging from a pH of 5.53 to a pH of 7.60 were obtained and the total colloidal content determined. The inorganic colloids were then extracted according to Truog and Drosdorff's procedure (2) and analyzed for total SiO2 , Al2O3 , Fe2O3 , TiO2 , P2O5 and available K2O. The total SiO2, Fe2O3, Al …

Benzenesulfinic Acid And Some Of Its Derivatives, Stewart E. Hazlet, L. Chas. Raiford Jan 1935

Benzenesulfinic Acid And Some Of Its Derivatives, Stewart E. Hazlet, L. Chas. Raiford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The migration of acyl from nitrogen to oxygen in o-aminophenol derivatives has previously been studied in this Laboratory.1 Rearrangement occurred with the acyls derived from carboxylic acids, but not with those obtained from sulfonic acids. It was therefore proposed to study the behavior of the sulfinyl radical in this connection.

The Scattering Of Potassium Ions In Mercury Vapor, Arthur Rouse Jan 1935

The Scattering Of Potassium Ions In Mercury Vapor, Arthur Rouse

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An apparatus has been designed to measure the angular distribution loss of potassium ions scattered in mercury vapor. The range of accelerating voltages was from 20 to 300 volts, and the range of scattering angles was from 60° to 150°. Preliminary curves have been obtained showing the angular distribution and energy loss. A comparison has been made with the theoretical curves of Massey, Mott, and Mohr. The results show what points must be more completely investigated.

Variations Electrical Resistance Of The Skin In Newborn Infants, M. A. Wenger, O. C. Irwin Jan 1935

Variations Electrical Resistance Of The Skin In Newborn Infants, M. A. Wenger, O. C. Irwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Measurements were made of the large variations in apparent electrical resistance of the skin of fifteen newborn infants. Readings were taken every five minutes over two hour periods using a unidirectional current technique. The purpose of the experiment was to check Richter's hypothesis that increases in palmar resistance afford an objective criterion of sleep.

A Preliminary List Of The Neuroptera Of Iowa, H. E. Jaques Jan 1935

A Preliminary List Of The Neuroptera Of Iowa, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Neuroptera or nerve-winged insects represent one of the smaller orders of the great group of six legged animals. No persistent work has been done on this group, for Iowa. The species herein listed have been gotten through general collecting. The list may doubtless be more than doubled by giving special attention to the order. The list is published as a challenge to Iowa nature lovers to find the other species that are doubtless more or less common within our state.

An Inquiry Concerning The Success Of Marine Aquaria In Iowa Schools, Amy Elizabeth Blagg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A five-gallon marine aquarium from the Supply Department of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole has afforded much interest not only to our students but also to members of other departments, and information is desired concerning the number of such aquaria used in Iowa, and the length of time the marine forms may he kept alive.

The Partial Molal Volumes Of Potassium Salts Of Certain Organic Acids At 25°C, Irwin H. Parrill Jan 1935

The Partial Molal Volumes Of Potassium Salts Of Certain Organic Acids At 25°C, Irwin H. Parrill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a brief resume of a part of the work performed under the direction of Dr. J. N. Pearce in an attempt to determine from density measurements the partial molal volumes of the potassium salts of various organic acids at various concentrations. It was hoped that some indication might be found as to the influence upon the partial molal volumes of the nature and position of substituent groups in the anion.

X-Ray Ionization Chamber Materials, J. Norvel Sayler Jan 1935

X-Ray Ionization Chamber Materials, J. Norvel Sayler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An attempt has been made to reduce leakage and troublesome current fluctuations in ionization chambers due to α-particle emission from materials of which chambers are made. Work of Bearden (Johns Hopkins), 1932, has been checked in good agreement, with one exception. Counts of α-particle emission have been made for steel, electroplated copper, aluminum, tin, brass, and glass, after Bearden, and in addition for platinum, molybdenum, electroplated nickel, and electroplated chromium. Best results were obtained from cold rolled steel. In all cases the materials were cleaned with abrasives, and CH3Br was used as ionizing gas. A "cage" type ionization …
