A Comparative Study Of The Normal And Pathological Ear With Regard To Intensity Level Preference And Intelligibility Of Speech Sounds, Noble H. Kelly Jan 1936

A Comparative Study Of The Normal And Pathological Ear With Regard To Intensity Level Preference And Intelligibility Of Speech Sounds, Noble H. Kelly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dr. S. N. Reger, of the University of Iowa, independently discovered that the relationship between intensity level and loudness in the abnormal ear is strikingly different from that in the normal. For example, in the normal ear a frequency of 4096 cycles a given number of decibels above the threshold is judged as loud as 2048 cycles approximately the same number of decibels above the threshold. However, in abnormal ears, in which acuity is normal up to 2048 cycles but raised 60 decibels above threshold at 4096 cycles, an intensity level 10 decibels above the threshold at 4096 is judged …

Perception Of Relations In Reading, Dan L. Adler Jan 1936

Perception Of Relations In Reading, Dan L. Adler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present study deals with the measurement of intelligence on the college level by means of a new type of test employing the medium of reading comprehension. The test was first described by Dr. D. D. Feder at the 1934 meeting of this group. Basic to the new approach is the hypothesis that intelligence is manifested in the ability to perceive relationships in problem situations. In accordance with this hypothesis, individual differences in reading comprehension are due to variations in ability to perceive interrelationships of ideas in reading materials. The new reading test assumes that there are gradations of comprehension …

A Validation Of Certain Measures Of Personality Adjustment At The College Level, D. R. Mallett Jan 1936

A Validation Of Certain Measures Of Personality Adjustment At The College Level, D. R. Mallett

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report deals with some preliminary data on the validity of the Bell Adjustment Inventory, a questionnaire scale designed to locate personality maladjustments in high school and college students. Other similar measurements being studied are the Thurstone Personality Schedule and the Woodworth-House Mental Hygiene Inventory.

Are There Types Of Learning And Thinking That Are Functionally Distinct, And If So, What?, Robert Leeper Jan 1936

Are There Types Of Learning And Thinking That Are Functionally Distinct, And If So, What?, Robert Leeper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The field covered by the concepts of learning and thinking is so extensive, and includes such a diversity of concrete material, that it would be very surprising if all could be covered by the same explanatory subject matter. If the field is heterogeneous, effective research on learning and thinking is contingent upon the classification of these materials into functionally distinct groups. Relatively little attention has been paid to this problem, however, and much of the discussion that has existed has been patently superficial (maze learning an example of "motor habits," e.g.). The present paper discusses the basis for such classificatory …

Some General And Specific Factors In Transfer Of Training, Charles Van Riper, Robert L. Milisen Jan 1936

Some General And Specific Factors In Transfer Of Training, Charles Van Riper, Robert L. Milisen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two groups were used, one of which was trained in a right hand clockwise, and the other in a right hand counter-clockwise direction of motor skill. The transfer to the untrained hand in both groups was greatest in the direction opposite to training, although every case improved in both directions. The improvement due to the specific training was felt to account for the higher scores in the opposite direction, the remainder being due to general transfer.

Statistical Analysis Of Change-Over Or Reversal Tests, A. E. Brandt, A. Starbuck Jan 1936

Statistical Analysis Of Change-Over Or Reversal Tests, A. E. Brandt, A. Starbuck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The arithemetical procedure known as the analysis of variance is offered as a method determining the reliability of a test when two forms are given to subjects of known differences in ability or determining proficiency of students when given scaled questions. Results obtained by members of the English Department of Iowa State College in the process of designing a progress test are used as an example. The students were divided into high and low groups on the basis of scores received previously on the Iowa State College aptitude test, on a theme and on the Iowa State College English Department …

The Effect Of Penalty Upon Frequency Of Stuttering Spasms, C. Van Riper Jan 1936

The Effect Of Penalty Upon Frequency Of Stuttering Spasms, C. Van Riper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the features with which the psychologist must constantly deal when investigating stuttering is the great amount of variation in the frequency of stuttering blocks or spasms. Steer 1 has shown that frequency of stuttering spasms is, at least to a certain degree, a function of the type of speech situation. Van Riper and Hull2 showed a progressive decrease in frequency of spasms as the stutterer adapted to any given speech situation. However, little knowledge was gained from these experiments as to what factors in the situations were responsible for the variations in frequency.

Interrelation Of Seven Tests Of Laterality, D. W. Morris Jan 1936

Interrelation Of Seven Tests Of Laterality, D. W. Morris

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seven tests of laterality or sidedness were applied to a group of 80 subjects, 20 each of right-handed, left-handed, ambidextrous and stutterers. Except for the stutterers, the groups were classified on the basis of a laterality index questionnaire. A major purpose of the investigation was to determine whether or not a technique developed by Dallenbach (1, 2 and 3) for investigating conditions of visual clearness could be applied to naive observers. The essential point of the apparatus he used is an arrangement by which two areas of light are presented simultaneously to the subject who reports as to their comparative …

Intonation In Violin Performance, Paul C. Greene Jan 1936

Intonation In Violin Performance, Paul C. Greene

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A controversy exists as to whether artists who play stringed instruments perform in the so-called "natural" (sometimes called the "just" or "pure") musical scale, in the "equally tempered" scale, or in some other scale. A related question is whether these artists characteristically enlarge (augment) or contract (diminish) certain intervals as compared with their theoretical scale values.

A Study Of Creative Imagination In Artistic Expression, William A. Mccloy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this investigation of the nature of artistic expression, creative imagination is studied through the medium of a model stage, appreciation of colored slides, and imaginative insight by abstract paintings.

Characteristic Features Of Intellectual Deterioration In Schizophrenia And Organic Psychoses, Eleanor Palmer Jan 1936

Characteristic Features Of Intellectual Deterioration In Schizophrenia And Organic Psychoses, Eleanor Palmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study compares the performance of a group of deteriorated schizophrenics and organic brain diseases on the short form of the Stanford-Binet Scale with that of a control group of subnormals grading at the same mental age. Analysis of the data reveals significant differences with respect to vocabulary level, extent of scatter, and relative difficulty of particular test items which may be described in terms of an objectively recognizable "scatter pattern."

The Hypophysis Of The Tiger Shark, H. W. Norris Jan 1936

The Hypophysis Of The Tiger Shark, H. W. Norris

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The special features of the hypophysis of the tiger shark, Galeocerdo arcticus, are most clearly shown by comparison with corresponding structures in a typical form, such as the primitive shark Heptanchus.

History And Development Of The Goose Lake Upland Game Refuge And Nesting Area, Lloyd Smith Jan 1936

History And Development Of The Goose Lake Upland Game Refuge And Nesting Area, Lloyd Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since nine out of every ten acres in Iowa are either mowed, grazed, or cultivated, Iowa is one of the hardest, if not the most difficult state in the Union to set up a game program.

Comparative Anatomy In The Small School, Fae M. Shawhan Jan 1936

Comparative Anatomy In The Small School, Fae M. Shawhan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We have been using for about eight years at Drake University, a plan in presenting our course in comparative anatomy which we think has been very successful. It is a plan which will work most efficiently in smaller schools, schools where the number in comparative anatomy laboratories does not exceed fifteen people, but some phases of it can be applied to the larger class.

Further Observations On The Firebrat, Thermobia Domestica (Packard) (Thysanura), J. Alfred Adams Jan 1936

Further Observations On The Firebrat, Thermobia Domestica (Packard) (Thysanura), J. Alfred Adams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Data upon the first four instars of Thermobia domestica (Packard) appeared in a previous paper (Adams, 1933b). The rapid growth of the sensory appendages was emphasized. Nothing was written, however, about the duration of these early instars or the variations to be found in the dimensions of individuals within a given instar.

The Responses Of Normal And Castrate Female Sparrows To Injections Of Pregnant Mare Serum, Richard Avery Miller Jan 1936

The Responses Of Normal And Castrate Female Sparrows To Injections Of Pregnant Mare Serum, Richard Avery Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the winter months, ovaries and oviducts of the sparrows are greatly reduced. Injection of pregnant mare serum during this resting period stimulates the ovary to an activity which simulates that of the breeding season. Oviducts respond to the increased amounts of female hormone released by the ovary.

The Effect Of Hypertonic Solutions On Development, Arthur L. Schipper Jan 1936

The Effect Of Hypertonic Solutions On Development, Arthur L. Schipper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Post-diapause eggs of Melanoplus differentialis, previously kept at 5° C. for two months (to break the diapause or blocked condition) were placed in aerated balanced salt solutions of varying concentrations (the NaCl content ranging from .9% to 18%).

The Effect Of Vitamins On A Coccidian Infection, Elery R. Becker, Neal F. Morehouse Jan 1936

The Effect Of Vitamins On A Coccidian Infection, Elery R. Becker, Neal F. Morehouse

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The writers have shown in previous publications that a diet deficient in both vitamins B and G has a limiting effect on the number of oocysts eliminated during the process of immunization. Later they proved that this limiting effect is due either wholly or in part to the absence of the thermostable growth factor present in yeast. This factor was called vitamin G, but in view of the general belief of workers in nutrition that vitamin G is a composite, that designation should be construed only in the general sense. The factor has now been shown to be present in …

Embryology Of The Gonads Of The Marsh Hawk, Circus Hudsonius, Allan J. Stanley Jan 1936

Embryology Of The Gonads Of The Marsh Hawk, Circus Hudsonius, Allan J. Stanley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The gonads of Circus hudsonius are bilateral and nearly symmetrical organs throughout the life of the bird. The right and left ovaries are equal in size at all stages. The embryonic testes are likewise equal in size and shape, both possessing a conspicuous cortex. Some cortical elements of the right testis persist until the bird is at least four months of age, completely disappearing by the age of seven months. The cortex of the left testis occurs in small islets dispersed over the ventral surface of the organ. These cortical elements may persist slightly longer than those of the right …

The Cytology Of Developing Muscle, Isabelle G. Weed Jan 1936

The Cytology Of Developing Muscle, Isabelle G. Weed

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Development of myofibrils in myotome muscle of chick embryos may be divided into two phases. During the first, with which the present observations are concerned, "primary" fibrils arise in the cytoplasm of the presumptive muscle cells. During the second period the number of myofibrils increases apparently by splitting of the primary fibrils.
