The Radiometer: A Simple Instrument For The Measurement Of Radiant Energy In Field Studies, J. M. Aikman Jan 1936

The Radiometer: A Simple Instrument For The Measurement Of Radiant Energy In Field Studies, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the past decade important advances have been made in the measurement of light and radiant energy. Although previous to this time emphasis was placed on the refinement of instruments for measuring light, during this period emphasis has been placed on the measurement of radiant energy since plants are affected by rays both longer and shorter than those of the visible spectrum.

Central Determinants Of Peripheral Manifestations In Reading, Grant Fairbanks, Joseph Tiffin Jan 1936

Central Determinants Of Peripheral Manifestations In Reading, Grant Fairbanks, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous investigations have shown that poor reading is accompanied by irregularities in the eye-movements of the reader. The most marked of these is regressive movement, that is, backward movement of the eyes to places previously looked at. Clinicians in remedial reading have been much struck by the presence of these irregularities, and have sometimes attempted to improve reading by treating the eye-movements as such. The question investigated by this research is: Do irregular eye-movements cause poor reading, or does poor reading cause irregular eye-movements? If poor reading is shown to be the cause of poor eye-movements, then it is obviously …

The Damping Constant Of Tuning Forks, Scott N. Reger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The differences in the damping constants of tuning forks while testing hearing by both air and bone conduction are discussed. New methods of obtaining the damping constant are described.

The Propagation Of The Bluegill, Helioperca Machrochria (Rafinesque), And The Black Crappie, Pomoxis Spariodes (Lacepede) In Iowa Gravel Pits, Everett B. Speaker Jan 1936

The Propagation Of The Bluegill, Helioperca Machrochria (Rafinesque), And The Black Crappie, Pomoxis Spariodes (Lacepede) In Iowa Gravel Pits, Everett B. Speaker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the value of abandoned gravel pits in Iowa for the propagation of bluegill, Helioperca machrochira, and black crappie, Pomoxis spariodes. These observations were made at the Lake View fisheries station, located in Sac County. This area formerly constituted a series of thirty pits varying in size from a fraction of an acre to five acres. Several years ago the Iowa Fisheries Division stocked a number of fishes in one of the pools to ascertain their value for fish production. A marked degree of success attended their efforts, and an elaborate plan of …

Biological Fluid Osmotic Pressure Determinations, E. C. Mccracken Jan 1936

Biological Fluid Osmotic Pressure Determinations, E. C. Mccracken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An outgrowth of the method used by A. V. Hill to determine the next liberation accompanying the passage of a nerve impulse has resulted in the development of an apparatus by which the osmotic pressure of as small quantities of fluid as .5 cu. mm. may be determined to an accuracy of .1 per cent NaCl. The principle consists essentially in the differential cooling effect produced between the experimental sample and a standard solution when placed in a standard, constant temperature, constant humidity environment. A discussion of the necessary thermocouple loop construction, electrical difficulties, and optical system is included in …

Factors Influencing The Frequency Of Stuttering Reactions, Robert Larsen Jan 1936

Factors Influencing The Frequency Of Stuttering Reactions, Robert Larsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain, in terms of frequency of stuttering reactions, the influence of stuttering experienced in certain troublesome situations upon the stutterer's speech in non-troublesome situations, when certain cues representative of the former are also present in the latter. It is further the purpose of this study to show the influence of certain cues representative of troublesome words upon the stutterer's production of non-troublesome words, when the cues are associated with both kinds of words.

Recent Erosion In Middle River Traverse, Arthur Goshorn Jan 1936

Recent Erosion In Middle River Traverse, Arthur Goshorn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The short, sharp and narrow ravines that lead into Middle River in Madison County cut through the Kansas City beds. In a nearly vertical wall, the rock is frequently exposed with the brooks running along its base. There are many little waterfalls and some rock-falls or slides caused by the river eroding the shales and undermining the exposure. In the wider ravines, the brooks often change their channels from one side of the ravine to the other.

A Tachistoscopic Study Of Aesthetic Perception, Gilbert Brighouse Jan 1936

A Tachistoscopic Study Of Aesthetic Perception, Gilbert Brighouse

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the characteristic development of the perception of a painting for both artistically trained and untrained individuals. The method consisted in a series of brief exposures (165 sigma) of each of ten paintings, representing a wide range of "schools" of art. Six of the ten were colored reproductions. Exposures were repeated until the observer himself was satisfied that he had perceived the picture completely. To date results have been obtained on 60 observers (16 trained adults - graduate students and members of the faculty of the Department of Graphic Art - 24 untrained …

Time Characteristics In The Word-Association Test, Harold M. Williams Jan 1936

Time Characteristics In The Word-Association Test, Harold M. Williams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been repeatedly demonstrated that the word-association test empirically differentiates normals from delinquents and psychopaths, as well as a state of emotional calm from one of apprehension in a given subject. It is still relevant, however, to inquire more deeply, if possible, into the psychological nature of the process.

The Specificity Of Response Obtained On The Association Motor Test, Newell C. Kephart, H. Max Houtchens Jan 1936

The Specificity Of Response Obtained On The Association Motor Test, Newell C. Kephart, H. Max Houtchens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As a result of extensive testing of more or less normal individuals, the investigators were led to believe that word association might better be conceived of as a general mental process and that disturbances in association tests might be indicators of the amount of disturbance existing in a given individual's total process rather than rising from a specific situation which is presented to the subject's mind by the specific test word.

The Order Of Embryonic Determination Of Several Organs In Macrosiphum Solanifolii, K. A. Stiles Jan 1936

The Order Of Embryonic Determination Of Several Organs In Macrosiphum Solanifolii, K. A. Stiles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Aphids in nature are normally either winged or wingless. However, it has been found that there also occur individuals which are intermediate in wing development: that is to say, some individuals have only partly formed wings and therefore are intermediate between the winged and wingless types. The production of large numbers of intermediate-winged aphids can be induced in the laboratory by artificial means such as certain combinations of light and temperature.

Pitch Perception Of Frequency Glides, Don Lewis, Grant Fairbanks Jan 1936

Pitch Perception Of Frequency Glides, Don Lewis, Grant Fairbanks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A rising or falling frequency glide at the end of a sustained tone is perceived as being of greater extent and longer duration than the identical physical phenomenon occurring at the beginning of the tone. This is true for both complex and pure tones, with intensity constant or varying.
