The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide On The Yield, Phosphorus And Calcium Contents Of Wheat, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown, H. C. Millar Jan 1937

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide On The Yield, Phosphorus And Calcium Contents Of Wheat, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown, H. C. Millar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is normally about 0.03 per cent but the soil atmosphere usually contains considerably more than this amount especially in the vicinity of roots of rapidly growing plants. The carbon dioxide produced by the plant roots and by microbiological action diffuses from the soil and increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere immediately surrounding the above-ground portions of the plant. It is this carbon dioxide from the soil which the plant utilizes in its growth and hence the significance of an adequate supply is at once apparent. The influence of carbon …

The Phenomenon Of Increased Bone Conduction, Noble H. Kelley Jan 1937

The Phenomenon Of Increased Bone Conduction, Noble H. Kelley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous experimentation has indicated that under the following two conditions one's sensitivity for bone conducted sound is increased: (1) closure of the external auditory meatus; and (2) filling the meatus with water. There has been much discussion as to whether this "increased" sensitivity is apparent or real.

Wetting Of Hot Metal Filaments By Molten Metals, M. Alden Countryman Jan 1937

Wetting Of Hot Metal Filaments By Molten Metals, M. Alden Countryman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In making thin films of metal by evaporation it is often convenient to evaporate the metal from an incandescent metal filament. In order that evaporation may take place properly the molten metal being evaporated must wet the incandescent filament. The work previously reported on the wetting of metal filaments by molten metals has been extended to include tantalum as a filament material. This report brings the work up to date. It includes the following metals as filament materials: nickel, platinum, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. The following metals were evaporated from the molten state: aluminum, silver, gold, copper, nickel, chromium, and …

Intensity Of The Violin Tone As A Function Of Bow Speed, Pressure, And Point Of Application Of The Bow, Arnold M. Small Jan 1937

Intensity Of The Violin Tone As A Function Of Bow Speed, Pressure, And Point Of Application Of The Bow, Arnold M. Small

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a report of one category of findings arising from a general program of research concerned with tone production on the violin. The development of a mechanical bow has made possible the control of bowing factors so that each factor may be varied independently. In general it has been found that, for a given point of contact, bow speed is the predominant factor in determining the intensity of tone. Variation in the point of contact, relative to the distance from the bridge, results in an increase in intensity as the bridge is approached.

A Study Of The Gonadotropic Potency Of Bird Pituitary (Domestic Turkey), A. J. Stanley, G. M. Riley, E. Witschi Jan 1937

A Study Of The Gonadotropic Potency Of Bird Pituitary (Domestic Turkey), A. J. Stanley, G. M. Riley, E. Witschi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pituitary glands were collected from domestic turkeys and assayed on immature rats and on non-breeding adult sparrows. Various dosages were given. In the rat 25 milligrams of the dry powdered gland produces a minimal reaction. Smaller amounts gave little or no effect while larger amounts gave greater reactions. Daily injections of 5 to 10 milligrams of the powdered gland cause a striking development of the sex glands of sparrows within two weeks.

An Item Analysis Of The Adjustment Questionnaire, Emma Mccloy Layman Jan 1937

An Item Analysis Of The Adjustment Questionnaire, Emma Mccloy Layman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Following a preliminary analysis of 782 personality test items, a questionnaire of 97 items of the yes-no type was administered to a group of 276 freshman men. A statistical analysis of the results was made, and the list was reduced to 67 items. Tetrachoric correlation coefficients were computed between these 67 items and these were submitted to a factor analysis, using Thurstone's technique. It was found that at least 12 factors are necessary to account for the intercorrelations between the items. Of the 67 items, 38 were found to be sufficiently pure that they had factor loadings greater than.50 for …

The Comparison Between Electrodermal Response And Hedonic Tone, Clifford E. Jurgensen Jan 1937

The Comparison Between Electrodermal Response And Hedonic Tone, Clifford E. Jurgensen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The impressive method of single exposure has long been used to study feeling tone. The expressive method of electrodermal response is similarly used. If both of these methods are valid for the above purpose when used alone, there should be agreement between the two when used together. Essentially the purpose of this study is to determine the degree of relationship between these two methods of study.

Some Methods Of Teaching Taxonomy, H. E. Jaques Jan 1937

Some Methods Of Teaching Taxonomy, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When viewed from the aspect of its relationship to other biological fields of either a pure or applied science nature or when taken only as associated with an avocational program, an understanding of the problems of classification of plants and animals is highly essential. Specialists in other fields of biology need not be expert taxonomists but the ability to readily handle some simple classification problems is very desirable and may spare one some awkward embarrassments. Collecting and classifying some group of nature's highly interesting creations appeals so strongly to many that some instruction in handling classification keys may well be …

The Vegetative Growth Phases Of Apple Shoots And Their Relation To Root Formation, V. T. Stoutemyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Distinctly different growth phases in apple occurred during the course of development from seed to tree. The juvenile condition was recognized by the thinner leaves with much less pubescence. Anthocyanin production was more abundant in juvenile shoots. In some species of apple, the shape of the leaf changed from an entire to a lobed form with the approach of maturity.

The Effect Of Training Upon The Handedness Preference Of The Rat In An Eating Activity, Robert L. Milisen Jan 1937

The Effect Of Training Upon The Handedness Preference Of The Rat In An Eating Activity, Robert L. Milisen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of sidedness has become important in the last few years due to the relationship which may exist between it and certain disabilities such as stuttering, reading and spelling. Although much work has been done with sidedness of human subjects, many factors could not be studied or controlled; therefore, rats were used in this study.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the afternoon of April 28, 1933, which I spent in collecting plants along the banks of Copperas Creek in Van Buren County, Malcolm McDonald and myself -working under the direction of Professor Charles Carter - have been doing the foundation work preparatory to the publication of a Flora of Southeastern Iowa. In the course of this work we have built up a herbarium, of more than three thousand specimens, which is now preserved in the Biology Department of Parsons College. In addition to this field collecting and identification, we have consulted already published lists and examined specimens from other …

The Effect Of Replacing Bases With Hydrogen On Microbiological Action In Soils, J. R. Johnston, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown Jan 1937

The Effect Of Replacing Bases With Hydrogen On Microbiological Action In Soils, J. R. Johnston, F. B. Smith, P. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The activities of microorganisms in the soil are affected by a large number of factors and one of the principal ones is the hydrogen ion concentration of the soil. The decomposition of organic matter may take place at a low pH as well as at a high pH; however, the type of organisms responsible for decomposition varies at different pH values and the rate and character of the decomposition may also change considerably.

Funaria Flavicans Michx. In Iowa, Clark D. Paris Jan 1937

Funaria Flavicans Michx. In Iowa, Clark D. Paris

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

On May 18, 1935, the writer collected some mosses in the vicinity of the U. S. Fish Hatchery, southeast of Manchester, Iowa. When the late Miss Lucy M. Cavanagh identified these, she found that there was a collection of Funaria ftavicans Michx., which heretofore has not been reported from this state. Miss Cavanagh had planned to report this moss at last year's meeting but her illness prevented it. This particular species was found growing on the ground in a cleared sheep pasture east of the Fish Hatchery. Part of this collection is in the Herbarium of the State University of …

Notes On Seed Production In The Smooth Perennial Sow Thistle, Ada Hayden Jan 1937

Notes On Seed Production In The Smooth Perennial Sow Thistle, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sonchus arvensis var. glabrescens Wimm. and Graeb. is at present sparsely distributed in Iowa. The patches are often miles apart. In a number of isolated colonies observed in Clay, Palo Alto, Osceola, Dickinson, Story and Hamilton counties seeds are seldom or never found from July to September. Some tests made relative to the fruiting habits of the Smooth Sow Thistle produced the following results. Self or close pollinated flowers from the same head or from heads in the same colony produced no fruits ("seeds"). Flowers cross-pollinated by brushing with flowers from a distant colony produced almost as many seeds as …

Variations In The Compositon Of Steffens Waste Ii, Edward Bartow, George H. Coleman, H. E. Redman Jan 1937

Variations In The Compositon Of Steffens Waste Ii, Edward Bartow, George H. Coleman, H. E. Redman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Steffens waste is the filtrate from the precipitation of sugar from beet molasses by the addition of lime. The molasses, as it comes from the beet sugar extraction process, contains about 50 per cent sugar, so it is too valuable to be fermented to produce alcohol in this country, although in Europe, much of the beet molasses goes directly to production of alcohol by fermentation.

Growth, Reproduction, And Blood Changes Produced In Rats By Means Of Zinc Carbonate, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson Jan 1937

Growth, Reproduction, And Blood Changes Produced In Rats By Means Of Zinc Carbonate, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The literature bearing on the toxicity of zinc to the animal body is very confused. D'Amore, Falcone, and Marmaldi (1) fed zinc oxide to dogs; they called attention to the loss of appetite and the weak condition of their animals with the further observation that the blood color and the number of red cells were greatly diminished. During the last days of the poisoning, the white cells markedly increased. Urine of the dogs was diminished in volume and contained casts and albumin. Lehmann (2) fed zinc carbonate to dogs for eleven months with no evidence of poisoning. Batchelor, Fehnel, Thompson, …
