The Effects Of Substituents On The Reactions Of Certain Vanillin Derivatives, Otto Nitz, L. Chas. Raiford
The Effects Of Substituents On The Reactions Of Certain Vanillin Derivatives, Otto Nitz, L. Chas. Raiford
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
As far back as 1894 Victor Meyer (1) reported research on the effect of an ortho substituent influencing the reactivity of an active group. He observed among other things that methyl, chloride, bromide, or iodide substituents produced a steric hindrance effect roughly proportional to the molecular weight of the substituent. He also observed that the nitro group had an effect out of proportion to its weight, which indicated that its chemical nature also had a bearing. Cases have been reported in which the nitro group had an accelerating effect rather than a hindering one (2).

A Gas-Type X-Ray Tube, L. E. Pinney
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The tube is, in general, of the Wyckoff type but the design has been re-worked for the purpose of better adaptation to the particular problem in hand. Simplification of machine work and utilization of standard parts have also received attention. The tube is being used by John W. Gowen for irradiating biological materials.
Purposive Teaching Of High School Physics, Simeon M. Hickman
Purposive Teaching Of High School Physics, Simeon M. Hickman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The science of teaching High School Physics is primarily a consideration of the physical world in its relationship to life. It is generally accepted that the fundamental objectives of the Physics course are twofold. First: to give the student a clear understanding of the theories, laws, and principles of Physics as set forth in the high school course of study. Second: to develop certain mental habits fundamental to scientific thinking. However, these two objectives are not sufficient if the subject is to be taught in its broader sense. It is equally important that the student shall come in contact with …
One Hundred Iowa Mosses, Henry S. Conard
One Hundred Iowa Mosses, Henry S. Conard
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The mosses of Iowa are far from being adequately known. There are two large collections in which many packets are still unidentified. Outside of the State the Iowa mosses are very scantily represented even in the largest herbaria. It is proposed to distribute ten sets of the mosses and liverworts of the State, in order to place on record, and make available, the species and localities. Following is a list of one hundred Musci that are now ready for distribution. Although there are over 200 species of Musci in Iowa, it is doubtful whether another hundred will ever be distributed …
Soil Moisture Relationship Of The European Bindweed (Convolvulus Arvensis L.), A. L. Bakke
Soil Moisture Relationship Of The European Bindweed (Convolvulus Arvensis L.), A. L. Bakke
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The European bindweed (Convohrulus arucnsis L.) has an extensive root system. A large number of feeding roots are located in the upper two feet but the main tap root often extends to a depth of twenty feet. Soil samples taken at one and two foot depths in 1933, 1934 and 1935, at Hawarden, Iowa, from corn ground, heavily infested with bindweed, and free from bindweed, showed very little difference in soil moisture content. As the soil moisture content was often below the wilting coefficient, it was found that the bindweed developed readily while the corn grew very little. European …
Increasing Realism In The Physics Laboratory, Roger M. Morrow
Increasing Realism In The Physics Laboratory, Roger M. Morrow
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
At Iowa Wesleyan College we have felt the need of making the physics laboratory more interesting to the student. This has been accomplished, in part, by making the experiments such that the application is direct or obvious. The following four experiments meet our need.
An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber
An Experiment In The Teaching Of Industrial Physics, M. E. Graber
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
While we as teachers of engineering physics comparing ourselves with ourselves and grading objective tests of many types and stripes are inclined to think that our teaching and student product are satisfactory, there may be criteria which our instruction is not meeting. Impressed with this possibility I have made an analysis of my findings obtained from interviews with my own students, deans of engineering schools and engineers in the practice of their profession. The results of these studies are definite and specific.

Psychic And Hypnotic Effects On Gastric Motility In Man, R. E. Scantlebury
Psychic And Hypnotic Effects On Gastric Motility In Man, R. E. Scantlebury
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The multiplicity of psychic phenomena which inhibit the hunger contractions in man led to an attempt to analyze their effect and to determine what influence hypnotic suggestion might have on the movement of the empty stomach and to determine a possible route by which these effects might occur.
The Insufficieny Of The Electrostatic Explanation Of Change Of The Apparent Ionic Molal Volume With Concentration In An Aqueous Solution, G. W. Stewart
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
If in an aqueous ionic solution the structure of the water remained constant or at least did not change its energy with concentration, then the change in partial molal free energy of the ions can be determined by the Debye-Hiickel theory, and also finally the change in partial mol volume produced by a change in concentration. This may be called the free ion electrostatic explanation, involving the change of energy of the ionic charges with concentration, the change in dielectric constant with pressure and the compressibility. As a conclusion of this theory with increase in apparent ionic molal volume should …
Predicting Success In Teaching, Wm. H. Batson
Predicting Success In Teaching, Wm. H. Batson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the school year 1929-30 the writer administered the Moss Teaching Aptitude Test to 91 students taking the first year work in Education. The majority of students at that time were in their sophomore year. These results were laid aside and several years later a check-up was made on the number of this group that were teaching and a rating scale was submitted to the administrative officers in the schools where these people were teaching. After the superintendents' reports were received several series of correlations were made including relationships between the aptitude test scores and superintendents' reports ; between aptitude …

Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders
Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Where an ancient people construct lodges, build houses, establish shrines, rear temples, bury their dead, create art or preserve a tradition, it is often possible by an analysis of these elements to reconstruct an outline of their culture and form some opinion of when it prevailed. When, however, one undertakes to rewrite the history of a long since vanished savage people such as the nomadic hunters of America undoubtedly were, the student is forced to rely upon the few preserved portions of his skeletal remains and the meager assemblage of his small store of utilitarian implements which have been recovered …
Hygroscopicity As A Factor In The Thermal Conductivity Of Loose-Fill Insulators, H. Stiles, H. E. Ruff
Hygroscopicity As A Factor In The Thermal Conductivity Of Loose-Fill Insulators, H. Stiles, H. E. Ruff
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There has been constructed a thermal conductivity apparatus of the guarded hot plate type employing a compensatory heating unit and designed to test samples having low values of thermal conductivity. Tests on various types of loose-fill thermal insula· tors reveal that there is a linear increase of thermal conductivity with increased moisture content. Depending upon the particular type of sample under consideration, a hygroscopicity of 20 to 30 per cent by weight completely vitiates the efficacy of loose-fill jnsulation.

Α, Ss - Unsaturated Ketones Obtained From Acetophenone And Their Reaction With Phenylyhydrazine, L. Chas. Raiford, Glen V. Gundy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In an earlier paper1 it was reported that when the bromine and chlorine substitution products of vanillin were condensed with acetophenone in the presence of sodium hydroxide, as indicated by Schmidt2 and extended by Claisen and collaborators3, both monoand cliacetophenone derivatives were obtained, regardless of the relative amounts of aldehyde and ketone used. It was clearly of interest to test this behavior when a substituent is present in the acetophenone used. These experiments have been repeated with various substituted acetophenones, and it may be stated at once that although several modifications of the method of condensation …
Further Studies Of Non-Nuclear Structures In The Basidium, J. E. Sass
Further Studies Of Non-Nuclear Structures In The Basidium, J. E. Sass
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Pursuing a further analysis of the so-called Golgi apparatus in the basidium, tests were made with some accepted chondriosome techniques. Typical chondriosomes were found to be present, quite unlike the bodies associated with the Golgi apparatus. It is suggested that the Nebenkern and Golgi material are discrete cell bodies, apart from nucleus, chondriosomes and centrosomal mechamsm.

Some Properties Of Single Crystals Of Beta Brass, Wayne Webb
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A set of twenty Leta brass single crystals has been grown and an optical method devised for determining the orientation of the lattice. Measurements have been made of the dependence of the electrical resistance on temperature as indicative of the "degree of order" in the lattice.
The Tree Puzzle As A Teaching Device, J. M. Hitchings
The Tree Puzzle As A Teaching Device, J. M. Hitchings
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Several years ago while teaching in the high school at Grinnell, Iowa, I found the "Grinnell Flora" and "Our Trees" by Prof. Conard very useful devices for teaching and particularly for motivating an interest in outdoor life. After moving to Davenport, with only a forty-five minute class period, and an impossible walking distance from desirable spring flora, one choice for the out-of-door study was the trees. Since students like field studies and the trees demand to make themselves known in the spring, I set to work to construct a guide to the common native and cultivated trees of our locality. …

Some Features In The Life History Of Amphicarpa Bracteata (L.) Fernald (Hog Peanut), John N. Martin
Some Features In The Life History Of Amphicarpa Bracteata (L.) Fernald (Hog Peanut), John N. Martin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Amphicarpa bracteata and the very similar species, Amphicarpa comosa (L.) G. Don are two interesting cleistogenes of the legume family. The two species are similar in habitat, preferring rich woods and thickets but growing in the open, and are rather generally distributed throughout most of the state’s east of the Rocky Mountains. They have slender twining stems ranging from one to six or more feet in length that trail over the ground or use bushes, weeds, or whatever may be in their reach for a support (text figure 1). Seven species, two in America and five in …

Fruit Hypertrophy Caused By Cuscuta, Henry Lee Dean
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The writer (1, 2) has recently pnblished certain results of extensive experiments relating to gall formation in host stems following haustorial invasion by Cuscuta. Concurrent with these experiments certain host plants were allowed to grow in the greenhouse until flowers and fruits had been formed. Stems of Cuscuta Gronovii Willd., growing from adjacent host plants, twined of their own accord around developing pods of the garden pea, Pisum sativmn L. These plants were left undisturbed until the pods were matured. early in the summer of 1936. Three pods of the garden pea were affected; two on one host, a third …
The Microfossils Of Two Eocene Coal Deposits In Wyoming, L. R. Wilson
The Microfossils Of Two Eocene Coal Deposits In Wyoming, L. R. Wilson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Samples of coal were secured at six inch intervals through two brown coal deposits near Wamsutter, Wyoming. These were macerated and studied microscopically. The coal is of Green River age and contains an abundance of pollens, spores and invertebrate fragments. The plant fossils were studied statistically and stratigraphically and a high degree of correlation between the spectra of the two deposits is evident. Species of the Cycadaceae, Coniferae, Gnetaceae, Myricaceae, Betulaceae, and Tiliaceae have been recognized in the material.
The Single Precipitation Of Calcium Oxalate In The Presence Of Magnesium, Richard G. Kadesch, R. W. Getchell
The Single Precipitation Of Calcium Oxalate In The Presence Of Magnesium, Richard G. Kadesch, R. W. Getchell
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It has been known for a long time that when calcium is precipitated as the oxalate in the presence of magnesium some magnesium is likely to be found in the precipitate. Therefore, it is customary to perform a double precipitation whenever the content of magnesium amounts to more than a few milligrams. With a view toward eliminating the time-consuming second precipitation whenever possible, it is the purpose of the present work to determine to what extent reliable results may be obtained for calcium using merely a single precipitation.

Blood Sugar Changes In The Rat Produced By Salt Of Beryllium, Magnesium, And Zinc With Some Observations On Hemoglobin And Red Blood Corpuscles, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This report is the direct result of research in this laboratory upon the physiological role of several metallic salts. The influence of magnesium salts upon the blood sugar content of rabbits was studied by Underhill (1) who found that hyperglycemia subsequent to magnesium injection was most evident during the period of anesthesia. Meltzer and Auer (2) had shown that an animal anesthetized by an injection of magnesium sulfate could be quickly restored to normal by an intravenous injection of calcium chloride. Underhill (1) showed that the hyperglycemia produced in rabbits anesthetized with magnesium salt was reduced to normal in two …
Preparation Of Acetic Esters Of Some Higher Alcohols, John W. Swanson, James Coss
Preparation Of Acetic Esters Of Some Higher Alcohols, John W. Swanson, James Coss
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The preparation of the lower esters of acetic acid using the acid and alcohol, has been utilized for a long time. It has also been known that the velocity of esterification is greatly increased by the addition of hydrogen ions. Esters have also been prepared by the passing of the vapors of acetic acid and alcohol over a heated catalyst such as Al2O2, ThO2 or TiO2. Several theories have been advanced for the mechanism of the reaction, especially catalysis, by the hydrogen ion in the liquid phase reactions.
