The Distribution Of Zooplankton In Lake Okoboji, Malcolm Mcdonald Jan 1939

The Distribution Of Zooplankton In Lake Okoboji, Malcolm Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the past several summers a series of chemical and physical measurements have been made on Lake Okoboji by staff members of the Lakeside Laboratory. This is a continuation of work begun many years ago. In the summer of 1938 an attempt was made to study the relationship between the distribution of zooplankton and chemical and physical changes. During the period June 30 to August 24 collections were made every two or three days from two stations in West Okoboji and one in East Okoboji Lake. Each collection consisted of a series of ten-liter samples pumped from various depths, concentrated …

Rosa Multiflora And Its Progeny, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney Jan 1939

Rosa Multiflora And Its Progeny, Clark D. Paris, T. J. Maney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The introduction of Rosa multiflora Thunberg into England from Japan in 1781 was a high light in the history of rose growing. This one species has proven very valuable in the production of new varieties. Its offspring have been classed with several different groups depending on their habit of growth and flowering. Rosa multiflora progeny are found among the Multiflora, Polyantha, Hybrid Musk, Lambertiana, Hybrid Wichuraiana, Hybrid Polyantha, and other groups.

Qualitative Analysis By Means Of Drop-Reactions: A Systematic Study Of Interference, Lothrop Smith, Philip W. West Jan 1939

Qualitative Analysis By Means Of Drop-Reactions: A Systematic Study Of Interference, Lothrop Smith, Philip W. West

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a previous paper (1), the authors presented a system of qualitative microanalysis by means of drop tests based on a sodium carbonate-sodium peroxide separation. As was pointed out at that time, the separation gives two groups, namely the "aqueous" group, which consists mainly of elements that yield water-soluble carbonates and hydroxides, and the "acid" group which is made up chiefly of elements that give insoluble carbonates and hydroxides. It was further pointed out that one of the main advantages of the system offered was that the oxidation by the sodium peroxide yields the elements in a constant state of …

Some Chemical Aspects Of The Limnology Of The Lakes In The Okoboji Region, Ben H. Peterson Jan 1939

Some Chemical Aspects Of The Limnology Of The Lakes In The Okoboji Region, Ben H. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The mineral content of several lakes, bogs, springs and ponds in the Lake Okoboji region show wide variation in quantity and ratio of dissolved salts. The dissolved Oxygen, alkalinity, conductance and pH of West Okoboji and East Okoboji have been measured at intervals during the summer months of 1937 and 1938. The thermocline develops slowly in West Okoboji, deep lake, and reaches full development late in July. This condition then remains for the remainder of the summer. Spirit Lake, East Okoboji, which are typical shallow lakes, develop thermoclines which are disturbed by strong winds. Occasionally hydrogen sulfide develops in the …

Characteristics Of Heavy Accessory Minerals In A Pre-Cambrian Granite Gneiss, C. S. Gwynne Jan 1939

Characteristics Of Heavy Accessory Minerals In A Pre-Cambrian Granite Gneiss, C. S. Gwynne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Heavy accessory minerals have been separated from specimens of granite gneiss taken in a traverse across the Beartooth Plateau. Prominent accessories are biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, zircon, apatite, epidote and titanite. Characteristics of zircon, apatite and titanite from these samples are described.
