Studies In The Properties Of Suspensoids, Melvin D. Clark, Barbara J. Selzer Jan 1940

Studies In The Properties Of Suspensoids, Melvin D. Clark, Barbara J. Selzer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A quantitative investigation of the dielectric and light-scattering properties of both dielectric and conducting suspensoids such as rosin, starch, carbon, and metals, suspended in dielectric media, and their dependence upon such variable factors as particle density, particle size, the dielectric and optical constants of the suspensoid and the suspending medium, and the wave length of the incident light.

Variation In The Liquid Structure Of Water With The Solutions Of Thirty Strong Electrolytes, G. W. Stewart Jan 1940

Variation In The Liquid Structure Of Water With The Solutions Of Thirty Strong Electrolytes, G. W. Stewart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of the change in the liquid structure of water with concentration of strong electrolytes in solution has been extended to thirty-one cases. In all of them there is evidence, given by X-ray diffraction measurements, to indicate that the structure of water is modified similarly, and this is evidently an increase of density of the water with concentration of the ions. Moreover, there is a roughly constant quantitative relation between the influence by the wide concentration of ions on the density of the solvent and on the X-ray diffraction intensity distribution. In addition to the thirtyone cases of ions …

Quantitative Spectrographic Analysis Of Plant Tissue, L. T. Earls Jan 1940

Quantitative Spectrographic Analysis Of Plant Tissue, L. T. Earls

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Quantitative spectrographic analysis of corn leaf as a typical plant tissue has been carried out for several elements (Mg, Ca, Si), using a 1100-volt AC arc between carbon electrodes as a source. Tests have been made on various internal standards excitation conditions, etc., attempting to increase accuracy and reproducibility. Data and variations typical of the present status of the investigation are presented.

Distribution In Angle Of Alpha Particles From Li7 + H1, V. J. Young, G. J. Plain, W. B. Mclean, A. Ellett Jan 1940

Distribution In Angle Of Alpha Particles From Li7 + H1, V. J. Young, G. J. Plain, W. B. Mclean, A. Ellett

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We find the distribution of alpha particles from Li7 + H1 is not spherically symmetric, a result in disagreement with the conclusions of earlier investigators,1 who, however, worked at rather low energies only. Thick target data at energies as low as 150 ekv show the presence of a small cos2Θ term and may be represented by I(Θ) = 1 + .16 Cos2Θ while at 440 ekv the asymmetry is very marked, the data being well represented by I(Θ) = 1 + .7 Cos2 Θ. Because of the rapid increase of yield with …

Distribution On Angle Of Alpha Particles From F19 + H1, A. Ellett, W. B. Mclean, V. J. Young, G. J. Plain Jan 1940

Distribution On Angle Of Alpha Particles From F19 + H1, A. Ellett, W. B. Mclean, V. J. Young, G. J. Plain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The distribution in angle of long range alpha particles from fluorine bombarded by protons has been studied in the range 270 - 440 ekv. The distribution shows a very strong concentration in the forward direction. Intensity as a function of angle in the center of mass system may be represented by the equation I (Θ) = 1 + .77 CoS Θ + .17 CoS2 Θ for a bombarding energy of 375 ekv. The distribution shows little, if any, energy dependence and in particular is not observably different at 330 ekv bombarding energy. Targets were prepared by electrolyzing hydrogen fluoride …

College Student Behavior As An Evaluation Of The Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory, Earle E. Emme, Irvine Thoe Jan 1940

College Student Behavior As An Evaluation Of The Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory, Earle E. Emme, Irvine Thoe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One hundred forty freshman students, 56 women and 84 men, were given the Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory. Confidential information was then obtained on thirty out-of-town students. Raters reported on only those whose student behavior was specifically known to them. Ten freshman women live in the Women's Dormitory. There is no men's dormitory, and all the men live either at their own homes or in private homes. This made the desired information not as easily obtainable as on a campus where more students live in dormitories. Furthermore, the conduct of the student who is living at home does not so easily …

A New Test Of Imagination, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1940

A New Test Of Imagination, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A cube drawn in perspective on paper is placed before the subject. The test consists in following one of the eight corners as the cube is tumbled about, in imagination; tipped forward or backward, to the right or left, or turned half way around. These movements makes possible a series of problems graded in difficulty. This test was given to freshman students at Iowa State College in 1933. The mean number of problems correctly solved by Agriculture, Home Economics, and Engineering students was 6.45 ± 0.21, 4.93 ± 0.15, and 9.04 ± 0.20, respectively. The critical ratios were Agri.-Home Ec., …

Ambisexuality And Sex Differentiation In Ambystoma, Winifred M. Gilbert Jan 1940

Ambisexuality And Sex Differentiation In Ambystoma, Winifred M. Gilbert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent and extensive use of Ambystoma for experimental work in sex differentiation necessitates knowledge of the normal development of their gonads. From the work of Burns, Humphrey, and Witschi, it has become quite clear that often in male salamanders a considerable cortical development accompanies that of the medullary testicular differentiation. Such ambisexual and hermaphrodite features may be expected to have either genetical or environmental causes. Genetical differences can be studied by raising groups of individuals from different localities under identical laboratory conditions. On the other hand, physiological effects of the environment should be brought out if genetically identical lots are …

A Preliminary List Of The Crane Flies (Diptera: Tipulidae) Of Iowa, Orville Halvorson, H. E. Jaques Jan 1940

A Preliminary List Of The Crane Flies (Diptera: Tipulidae) Of Iowa, Orville Halvorson, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The members of the family Tipulidae are commonly called "Crane flies." They have slender bodies, long slim wings, prominent halteres and long dangling legs. The legs break so readily between the trochanter and femur that it becomes a difficult problem to collect these insects and get them mounted in good condition. 1 This brittleness might almost be made a character for determination of the family. The antennae are long and slim and are composed of from six to thirty-nine jointed segments. The eyes are large and the ocelli are wanting. In size the various species show a range almost as …

Studies Of Eastern Iowa Spiders, Karl A. Stiles, Virginia G. Stevens Jan 1940

Studies Of Eastern Iowa Spiders, Karl A. Stiles, Virginia G. Stevens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The spiders of Eastern Iowa included in this study constitute a part of a general geographical and seasonal survey of the spiders of Iowa. The majority of them have been collected by the authors, although much assistance has been given by others.1 For the first time some spiders have been collected from the woodland floor by the sifting of dead leaves and other debris. Most of them have been found in Linn County, but there are also species from Wapello, Henry, Muscatine, Pottawattamie, Black Hawk, Clayton, Louisa, and Washington counties. Of the ninety-four different spiders here reported, thirty-five species …

A List Of The Leaf Hoppers (Cicadellidea) In The Iowa Insect Survey Collection, Carroll Padley Jan 1940

A List Of The Leaf Hoppers (Cicadellidea) In The Iowa Insect Survey Collection, Carroll Padley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The homopterous family, Cicadellidae, may be distinguished from its closely related allies the Membracidae and Cercopidae by the presence of a double row of spines on the hind tibiae. The leafhoppers are popularly known as pests of grains and grasses, but their injury is by no means confined to these crops, for there is scarcely a plant of agricultural importance that is not seriously injured by them. Many species rank high as garden, orchard, and vineyard pests. The nature of their injury is loss of sap, destruction of chlorophyll, serious contortions of foliage, and the transmission of plant diseases. By …

Lead Poisoning In Ducks Of Southwestern Iowa During The Winter Of 1938-39, Bruce F. Stiles Jan 1940

Lead Poisoning In Ducks Of Southwestern Iowa During The Winter Of 1938-39, Bruce F. Stiles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lead poisoning in ducks is caused from leaden pellets of shot in the gizzard. These are picked up with other particles of grit from the marginal shallows of water, in areas that have been shot over by hunters. A paralysis of the gizzard and that part of the digestive tract just in front of it, prevents food from passing through the body. The bird wastes away from starvation and becomes so emaciated that it is literally skin and bones. It is possible that some of the more vigorous birds are able to carry the lead shot and survive. Many of …

Some Abnormalities Of A Pair Of Siamese Twin Lambs, Carroll Padley, James Shipley Jan 1940

Some Abnormalities Of A Pair Of Siamese Twin Lambs, Carroll Padley, James Shipley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An interesting problem in the study of anatomy was presented by a pair of Siamese lambs recently brought to our laboratory. The lambs were from a Shropshire ewe that had given birth to normally developed twins the previous season. The Siamese lambs were delivered with much difficulty and as a consequence, they were damaged at the region of fusion causing an internal disruption of their organs. Although the lambs were alive immediately after delivery, the damage to their organs brought death within a few minutes.

Objective Studies Of Electrification In Mirotechnique, Karl A. Stiles, Douglas W. Eastwood Jan 1940

Objective Studies Of Electrification In Mirotechnique, Karl A. Stiles, Douglas W. Eastwood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Tests have been made on the amount of electrification that 1s present when tissues are sectioned with a rotary microtome. An aluminum foil electroscope with carefully controlled conditions gave the following results. Radium, ultra-violet radiation, and spark discharges lowered the electrification to a negligible amount. Grounding the microtome, or draping it with Christmas tree tinsel had no measureable effect. Humidification of the surrounding air in several tests lowered the amount of electrification, but was too inconvenient to be practical. The best results were obtained by modification of the imbedding medium. Of eighteen different imbedding mediums, diglycol stearate, sold by the …
