Biochemical Recovery From Anoxia, Ferrin B. Moreland Jan 1940

Biochemical Recovery From Anoxia, Ferrin B. Moreland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Confinement for 24 hours in pure nitrogen produces a great rise in blood sugar and lactate and fall in blood pH and bicarbonate, and tissue glycogen, in turtles. Recovery follows return to room air. pH and bicarbonate rise to or slightly above normal within 24 hours. Lactate falls markedly in the first 24 hours and is almost down to normal after 2 days; the sugar level falls more slowly but is normal within four days. Glycogen recovery is more rapid in liver than heart; muscle glycogen appears to rise above the pre-anoxic level.

A Critical Evaluation Of Study Habit Inventories, Irene Mammen Jan 1940

A Critical Evaluation Of Study Habit Inventories, Irene Mammen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Out of a list of 60 items having to do with study habits and study conditions, as are used in certain tests, 44 related to high or low-grade-average categories. Fifty-five per cent of the items were found to differentiate boys only while 26.1 per cent differentiated girls only. Approximately 10 per cent were equivalent in placing the two sexes and about 10 per cent operated in an opposite way. There is some evidence that good study habits are more important in college than in high school for attaining good grades. The study also suggests the need for an evaluation of …

Driving Aptitude Of Ccc Enrollees As Compared With A Similar Age Group From The General Population, Theron S. Carty, A. R. Lauer Jan 1940

Driving Aptitude Of Ccc Enrollees As Compared With A Similar Age Group From The General Population, Theron S. Carty, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two groups of individuals were compared on characteristics pertaining to sensory, motor and central processes, assumed to be necessary to efficiency in driving an automobile, to determine the degree of similarity between traits of 44 CCC enrollees and an unselected sample of 70 youths from the same age groups. The only significant differences found were: (1) CCC enrollees were shorter in stature and (2) less active than the .general population. (3) The vision of the CCC enrollees was also poorer and (4) they lacked experience with automobiles as compared with the average youth.

A Study Of Progress In Reading At Grade Five Level, Maxwell F. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reading tests were given to a ten-year-old fifth grade girl for a period of six weeks. Two types of material were used: (1) material from a text book of the fifth grade level was used in daily tests; (2) tests were given two days each week from material used at the college level. Instructions as to the proper reading technique were an integral part of the administration of the daily practices and checks on the fifth grade material. The exercises with college grade material were preceded by discussion and clarification of vocabulary. The subject progressed, in the daily tests, from …

Winter Birds Of Northeastern Iowa, Fred J. Pierce Jan 1940

Winter Birds Of Northeastern Iowa, Fred J. Pierce

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For twenty consecutive years I have taken the Christmas Bird Census which is sponsored annually by the magazine Bird-Lore. All these censuses were taken in northeastern Iowa. This series of December bird lists, covering a twenty-year period, forms a good index to the winter bird life of northeastern Iowa. During the twenty years forty-six species have been observed. With the exception of a half dozen or so rather rare winter visitants or residents, this number includes all the winter birds I have recorded in this locality.
